Illustrated type catalogue of marine Isopoda (Crustacea: Peracarida) from the Museu Nacional/UFRJ, Brazil

Abstract The Crustacea Collection of the Museu Nacional/UFRJ is one of the most relevant and representative of the Brazilian crustacean fauna. Currently, it comprises around 31,000 registered lots, of which 5,435 lots belong to the order Isopoda. This paper provides an illustrated catalog of two topotype species and 34 type species of marine isopods deposited at the Crustacea Collection of Museu Nacional/UFRJ, distributed in 22 genera, 12 families and six suborders. This collection is represented by 27 lots of holotypes, 81 lots of paratypes (15 named as allotypes), and two topotypes, published mainly by authors such as Alceu Lemos de Castro and Idalina Brasil-Lima, former researchers of Museu Nacional in the 20th century. The two topotypes species were included in the catalog as they came from the same collection event as the holotype and have been historically kept as type material within the museum collection. In general, the type materials are in good condition, however, the holotype of Robustura parvula (Albuquerque, 1978) and all type material of Pseudione serejoae Brito, Cardoso and Boyko, 2018 have been lost and await the designation of neotypes. Furthermore, this catalog is part of a larger project, in an effort to improve the curation and digitization of the museum´s type collection data. By photographing the specimens and digitizing the collection specimens´ labels, we expect to improve internal management and offer free access to the data, so as to preserve and promote the museum´s collections, which guard important and unique information on world biodiversity.

Checklist and distribution of the groundwater crustacean fauna from Sicily, Italy

Owing to the “Racovitzan impediment”, the groundwater fauna of most biogeographical regions is currently inadequately known, thus hampering our understanding of subterranean biodiversity and its protection. Based on an extensive bibliographical review accompanied by fieldwork to localize occurrence sites, a checklist of crustacean taxa reported to date from Sicilian groundwater is provided, and their distribution is described. Among the 63 taxa recorded to date, 43 belong to the class Copepoda (orders Cyclopoida and Harpacticoida), 15 to the class Malacostraca (orders Amphipoda, Bathynellacea, Isopoda, and Thermosbaenacea), and 5 to the class Ostracoda (order Podocopida). Conversely, to date, no representatives of the copepod order Calanoida nor species of the class Branchiopoda have been recorded from groundwater habitats on the island. Several taxa require accurate taxonomic revision or are yet to be formally described and are thus at present left in open nomenclature. Finally, the date of publication of several copepod and amphipod taxa is amended. A high incidence of stygobites (i.e., obligate groundwater dwellers) has been observed in malacostracans, whereas nearly half of the recorded copepods were non-stygobites. This pattern is mirrored by the incidence of endemic species, which is higher in malacostracans than in copepods. The only non-stygobitic crustacean species endemic to Sicily observed in the frame of present review is the asellid isopod Proasellus montalentii. The paucity of information currently available on the Sicilian groundwater ostracods prevents us from drawing conclusions regarding this crustacean group. The origin and composition of Sicilian groundwater crustacean fauna can be explained by considering three major faunal assemblages: the presence of ancient paleoendemic taxa, likely of Miocene origin, the colonization of the groundwater of the island during late Pliocene and Pleistocene land connections with peninsular Italy, and the direct colonization of these environments from the sea; no species of African origin have been discovered to date. Based on currently available data, the groundwater of southeastern Sicily hosts the highest species richness and some of the most biogeographically interesting taxa. Unfortunately, a progressive lowering and salinization of the local aquifers possibly due to climate change and its overexploitation threats this fauna, and several taxa are disappearing even before their discovery and description.

First records of some coral reef-associated brachyuran crabs from the Nicobar archipelago, India.

The coral reefs off the Andaman and Nicobar archipelagos harbour some of the world's diverse reef-associated crustacean fauna, which have not been adequately surveyed. A recent faunal survey in the Andaman Sea on-board the Fishery Oceanographic Research Vessel Sagar Sampada (cruise number 388) revealed a rich diversity of coral reef-associated brachyuran crabs. The article reports four genera, Singhaplax Serène & Soh, 1976, Cavoportunus Nguyen & Ng, 2010, Cyrtocarcinus Ng & Chia, 1994 and Visayax Mendoza & Ng, 2008 occurring in Indian waters for the first time. Seven species namely Singhaplax ockelmanni (Serène, 1971), Urnalana angulata (Rathbun, 1911), Pseudolambrus confragosus (Calman, 1900), Cavoportunus dubius (Laurie, 1906), Cyrtocarcinus truncatus (Rathbun, 1906), Visayax osteodictyon Mendoza & Ng, 2008, and Xanthias joanneae Mendoza, 2013, are likewise reported for the first time from Indian waters.

Cryptic diversity and speciation in an endemic copepod crustacean Harpacticella inopinata within Lake Baikal.

Ancient lakes are hotspots of species diversity, posing challenges and opportunities for exploration of the dynamics of endemic diversification. Lake Baikal in Siberia, the oldest lake in the world, hosts a particularly rich crustacean fauna, including the largest known species flock of harpacticoid copepods with some 70 species. Here, we focused on exploring the diversity and evolution within a single nominal species, Harpacticella inopinata Sars, 1908, using molecular markers (mitochondrial COI, nuclear ITS1 and 28S rRNA) and a set of qualitative and quantitative morphological traits. Five major mitochondrial lineages were recognized, with model-corrected COI distances of 0.20-0.37. A concordant pattern was seen in the nuclear data set, and qualitative morphological traits also distinguish a part of the lineages. All this suggests the presence of several hitherto unrecognized cryptic taxa within the baikalian H. inopinata, with long independent histories. The abundances, distributions and inferred demographic histories were different among taxa. Two taxa, H. inopinata CE and H. inopinata CW, were widespread on the eastern and western coasts, respectively, and were largely allopatric. Patterns in mitochondrial variation, that is, shallow star-like haplotype networks, suggest these taxa have spread through the lake relatively recently. Three other taxa, H. inopinata RE, RW and RW2, instead were rare and had more localized distributions on either coast, but showed deeper intraspecies genealogies, suggesting older regional presence. The rare taxa were often found in sympatry with the others and occasionally introgressed by mtDNA from the common ones. The mitochondrial divergence between and within the H. inopinata lineages is still unexpectedly deep, suggesting an unusually high molecular rate. The recognition of true systematic diversity in the evaluation and management of ecosystems is important in hotspots, as it is everywhere else, while the translation of the diversity into a formal taxonomy remains a challenge.

NEW REPORT OF DECAPOD AND ISOPOD CRUSTACEANS FROM THE LOWERMIDDLE PLEISTOCENE OF MONTALBANO JONICO, MATERA (BASILICATA, SOUTHERN ITALY)

The study of the Lower-Middle Pleistocene decapod crustacean fauna from Montalbano Jonico succession allowed 12 taxa to be recognized. The studied samples include some fossil species already known from the Pleistocene record of Italy, as Ebalia nux A. Milne-Edwards, 1883, Monodaeus bortolottii Delle Cave, 1988, Liocarcinus depurator (Linnaeus, 1758), Goneplax rhomboides (Linnaeus, 1758), and Chlinocephalus demissifrons Ristori, 1886. These species are reported for the first time from Basilicata, except for E. nux, whereas Carcinoplax jonica n. sp. and Neogoneplax bradanica n. sp. are introduced as new species. Moreover, one poorly preserved specimen is assigned to Ebalia sp.; one dubitative specimen to ?Carcinus sp.; one specimen to Bathycalliax sp. (Axiidea de Saint Laurent, 1979); one to an indeterminate galatheid; and two poorly preserved large-sized specimens are tentatively referred to Carcinoplax sp. (Goneplacidae, MacLeay, 1838). Finally, several indeterminate specimens of cirolanid (Isopoda) are reported, as well.The studied decapod community from Basilicata allows us to expand our knowledge of Pleistocene fossil crabs and their distribution around the Mediterranean Sea basin in the Lower-Middle Pleistocene.

Crustaceans from Tabatinga, coqueirinho and Tambaba beaches, belonging to the environmental protection area Tambaba, Paraíba, Brazil

Most species of crustaceans are part of the most basal levels of the marine trophic web. Their study in Brazil has increased in recent years, but many aspects of crustaceans remain unknown and non-sampled. The littoral of the State of Paraíba, located in northeastern Brazil, remains one of these insufficiently explored areas, despite the increasing environmental impacts due mainly to tourism. This study represents the first inventory of the crustacean fauna of beaches located within the Environmental Protection Area of Tambaba (beaches of Coqueirinho, Tabatinga and Tambaba, located in the municipalities of Conde, Alhandra and Pitimbu, respectively). Sampling was performed as part of the Project Biota - Paraíba (January, 2007 to April, 2009), consisting in manual collecting and shallow snorkeling (down to 0.1 to 0.3 m) during periods of the lowest tides by the research group of the Invertebrate Lab Paulo Young (LIPY), Federal University of Paraiba. More than 250 specimens of crustaceans, belonging to 45 species, were identified. This corresponds to 37.19% of the total species collected along the State of Paraiba during this project. Prominent among these species was Cardisoma guanhumi Latreille 1828, (Gecarcinidae, Brachyura), an important commercial species listed as being overexploited or in risk of overexploitation.

Ectoparasite crustaceans of ten fish species from the upper Araguari River in northern Brazil.

Fish parasites are an important part of aquatic biodiversity and knowing these species and their interactions with their hosts helps in monitoring the aquatic biota. The present study investigated the ectoparasite crustacean fauna of ten fish species from the upper Araguari River, in the state of Amapá, northern Brazil. A total of 508 fish were collected and analyzed from July to November 2014, of which 82.6% (109) were parasitized by one or more crustacean ectoparasite species. In the ten host fish species, a total of 308 ectoparasite specimens were collected, from 12 taxa, such as Argulus multicolor Stekhoven, 1937, Argulus spinulosus Silva, 1980, Argulus sp.1, Argulus sp.2, Argulus sp.3, Dipteropeltis sp., Dipteropeltis hirundo Calman, 1912, Dolops bidentata Bouvier, 1899, Dolops striata Bouvier, 1899 (Argulidae), Braga fluviatilis Richardson, 1911, Braga amapaensis Thatcher, 1996 (Cymothoidae) and Excorallana berbicensis Boone, 1918 (Corallanidae). Higher levels of prevalence and abundance were recorded for Hoplias aimara (Valenciennes, 1847) and Tometes trilobatus Valenciennes, 1850, respectively. These ectoparasites were found in the fins, integument, mouth, and anus of the host fish. Argulus sp.2 and D. bidentata were the most abundant parasites (65.1%), and had the highest species richness. This study registered 36 novel host-parasite interactions, and thus represents a new record for all host species here examined.

Diversity and Current State of Fish Communities of the Reserve “Utrish” (Caucasian Coast of the Black Sea, Abrau Peninsula)

Abstract The article is focused on the current state of biodiversity in the aquatic environment of the Utrish Nature Reserve. Implementation of the multi-level monitoring program for fish and crustacean fauna, conducted in the waters of the Utrish Nature Reserve during the period 2016-2018, using classical methods of biological analysis, as well as visual underwater fish counting, allowed us to assess the overall state of biodiversity in this area as sufficiently stable. The population status of the model indicator species, the European black scorpionfish Scorpaena porcus, was also stable during this period, confirming the effectiveness of protective measures in this area. Due to the continued increase in anthropogenic pressure on coastal marine biocenoses, monitoring studies require further continuation.

An Aptian sponge-associated decapod crustacean assemblage from Cal Cassanyes (Catalonia, north-east Iberian Peninsula): Taxonomy and palaeoecological implications

A highly diverse decapod crustacean fauna is described from the classic Aptian outcrop of Cal Cassanyes (Castellet i la Gornal) in Catalonia. Although decapod crustaceans are a minor component of the rich invertebrate assemblages at that locality, the just over fifty specimens collected comprise sixteen taxa assignable to the Macrura, Anomura and Brachyura. Of these, the last-named are the most prominent group, comprising eleven species, representing seven families, inclusive of one representative of the Eubrachyura. On the basis of this material, two new genera and five new species are erected, namely Pagurus? garrafensis sp. nov., Garrafosopon gen. nov. angustus (Wright and Collins, 1972) comb. nov., Vectis blesai sp. nov., Mesodromilites prietoi sp. nov., Necrocarcinus mariae sp. nov. and Iberodorippe vinea gen. nov., sp. nov. In addition, Hoploparia sp., an indeterminate axiid and one paguroid, as well as one indeterminate galatheoid are recorded here. Material of Distefania incerta (Bell, 1863), the commonest species at the study site by far, of Goniodromites laevis (Van Straelen, 1940) and of Etyxanthosia fossa (Wright and Collins, 1972) represents the first Aptian and stratigraphically oldest records for these taxa. Added to this list are also Eodromites sp., Paranecrocarcinus? sp. and Pseudonecrocarcinus? sp. The high decapod crustacean diversity at Cal Cassanyes establishes this locality as the richest Aptian assemblage from the Iberian Peninsula, but also one of the richest in the world. The faunal assemblages here are dominated by sponges, and the varied composition of the decapod crustacean faunas can be linked to upwelling currents which provided abundant nutrients. In fact, the establishment of sponge communities played a crucial role in activating the food chain and functioned similarly to a patch reef, creating a relatively sheltered environment that facilitated the colonisation of other invertebrate communities, including decapod crustaceans. The latter occupied various trophic levels as both primary and secondary consumers. Current knowledge of Early Cretaceous decapod crustaceans is scant and hinders a thorough palaeobiogeographical analysis. The present study emphasises the challenges surrounding the identification of endemic taxa, thus impacting our understanding of decapod crustacean palaeobiogeography of the late Early Cretaceous.

Marine Malacostraca (Arthropoda, Crustacea) from the Gulf of Oran (Algerian west coast)

Abstract This present paper presents an inventory of benthic Malacostraca in the Gulf of Oran. The softbottom crustacean fauna was studied between February 2021 and September 2021. Samples were collected from 8 coastal stations. The class Malacostraca was represented with 2 subclasses, Eumalacostraca and Phyllocarida. Sixty-one species and 290 individuals belonging to seven crustacean orders (Amphipoda, Decapoda, Isopoda, Tanaidacea, Mysida, Lophogastrida and Leptostraca) were identified. Amphipoda were represented with the highest number of species (36) followed by Decapoda (11) and Isopoda (6). Tanaidacea and Mysida were poorly represented, with 3 and 2 species, respectively. Lophogastrida and Leptostraca were both represented by only one species. Among the crustaceans encountered, Ampelisca was the most dominant genus. The present inventory indicates that the carcinological fauna in the Gulf of Oran is less diversified than it is in other zones that have been studied on the Algerian coast (Gulf of Arzew, Bay of Bou-Ismail, and Bay of Algiers).

Where to fish in the forest? Tree characteristics and contiguous seagrass features predict mangrove forest quality for fishes and crustaceans

Abstract Mangroves often support rich fish and crustacean communities, although faunal abundance and diversity show strong spatiotemporal variability. Consistent patterns in mangrove animal communities might be dictated by forest characteristics, by seascape context or by some combination of these factors. Predicting drivers of spatial heterogeneity in mangrove faunal communities can better support the zoning of forests for management purposes, for example by identifying sites important for fisheries nursery provision. We sampled 14 sites within a large (4000 ha) mangrove forest in Kenya, quarterly over a period of 2 years. There were clear and consistent differences in the quality of sites for fish and crustacean abundance and diversity. Forest characteristics (as summarised by the complexity index, CI) and seascape metrics (the presence, area and configuration of contiguous seagrass) were strong predictors of site differences. However, they showed opposite influences on dominant members of the fish and crustacean faunas, with CI correlated negatively with fishes and positively with crustaceans, and seagrass area correlated positively with fishes and negatively with crustaceans. Synthesis and applications. Sites within the same mangrove forest exhibit consistent differences in fish and crustacean abundance. However, the fish and crustacean communities (and particularly dominant species within them) act differently in response to forest and seascape characteristics. Old growth, mature forest, set in a seascape of seagrass patches with bare sediment, was associated with highest crustacean abundance. In contrast, denser smaller trees and seascapes with larger, continuous areas of seagrass correlated better with fish abundance. Zoning for management, as mandated in new Kenyan policy, will need to consider these differences in seascape use between fish and crustaceans.

On the occurrence of Phallocryptus spinosus (Milne-Edwards, 1840) in Sicily (Crustacea, Branchiopoda)

The distribution, status, and phenology of the anostracan Phallocryptus spinosus in Sicily are described. The only population of the species to date known to occur with certainty on the island inhabits a few temporary water bodies located within the Natura2000 site “ITA010006 - Paludi di Capo Feto e Margi Spanò”. In these sites, the species co-occurs with an interesting halophilous flora and crustacean fauna. Based on available data, the concentration of dissolved salts in the water bodies seem to be the main driver of the life histories of the co-existing populations of the anostracans Artemia salina and Phallocryptus spinosus.&nbsp

Seasonal Variation (Winter vs. Summer) Crustacean Fauna of the Oualidia Lagoon, Morocco

The Oualidia lagoon on the Atlantic coast of Morocco provides important ecosystem services such as aquaculture, fisheries, tourism and high ecological and biological productivity. This is the first study to describe the spatio-temporal distribution of the crustacean community and potential controlling factors in the coastal waters of the Oualidia lagoon. Crustaceans were sampled with a Van Veen grab during two surveys in winter and summer 2013, and taxonomic composition and diversity were determined at 43 sampling sites. Of the eighteen crustacean taxa recorded, fifteen were new to Oualidia Lagoon. Sphaeroma serratum was the most abundant species in both seasons. Organic matter and chlorophyll a content were higher, temperature and salinity were lower in winter than in summer. The structure of the crustacean assemblages was characterised by the formation of two main clusters, organised according to a downstream gradient. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) showed that granulometry, organic matter and salinity strongly influenced the distribution pattern of crustaceans in the lagoon.

Additions to the marine decapod (Crustacea: Decapoda) fauna of South Africa

This report adds five previously unreported species to the decapod crustacean fauna of South Africa, as well as removing one species previously listed in error. It also documents locality (and/or reference specimen) data for 12 other species, most of which had been depicted in regional field guides, but without reporting when and where they had been collected. Almost all the species added were already known from adjacent African countries and their ranges are here extended into South Africa. Although some of these records are based on photographs, rather than collected specimens, it is argued that such records should be accepted as adequate evidence for inclusion of at least visually-distinctive crustacean species into the regional fauna.

Assemblages of Meiobenthic and Planktonic Microcrustaceans (Cladocera and Copepoda) from Small Water Bodies of Mountain Subarctic (Putorana Plateau, Middle Siberia)

The Putorana Plateau (Krasnoyarsk Territory, Russia) is one of the largest mountainous regions of subarctic Eurasia. Studies of aquatic ecosystems of this are far from complete. In particular, microcrustaceans (Cladocera и Copepoda) of the Putorana Plateau are poorly investigated, although they are one of the main components of meiobenthic and zooplanktonic communities and a target for monitoring of the anthropogenic influence and climate change. An open question is a biogeographical status of the crustacean fauna of the plateau. Additionally, it is unknown which environmental factors significantly affect benthic and planktonic crustacean assemblages? Based on the samples collected in tundra and forest tundra ponds in the western and central parts of the plateau, analysis of the composition of crustacean fauna and factors regulating the assemblage structure was performed. In total, 36 Cladocera and 24 Copepoda species were found. Of these, 23 taxa are new for the region, and four are new to science. Species richness of Copepoda is higher in the central part and on the western slopes of the plateau than in foothills, while number of the Cladocera species in contrast decreases in mountainous areas. Variations in meiobenthic assemblages are due to the research area, type of water supply and less affected by altitude above sea level. For planktonic assemblages the size of the water body and, to a lesser degree, by macrophytes species composition was significant. Almost 12.8% of microcrustacean species of the Putorana Plateau can be attributed to glacial relics. Crustacean fauna of the Putorana Plateau has a high species richness and distinguishes significantly from the fauna of both western and eastern regions of the Arctic. The specifics of faunal composition of the region are connected to the climatic features of Middle Siberia and the retaining of the Pleistocene fauna in some glacial refugia.

Review of the large branchiopod crustacean fauna of Qatar (Anostraca, Notostraca, Spinicaudata) and adjacent countries

The large branchiopod crustaceans (Anostraca, Notostraca, and Spinicaudata) of Qatar have only been examined recently. Although 15 nominal species have been reported for the Arabian Peninsula, there is confusion surrounding the determinations of previously collected taxa from Qatar, and the validity of some spinicaudatan taxa is in question. Most spinicaudatan clam shrimp taxa are poorly described; some lack type material or the type material has been lost. We provide a review of the taxa from Qatar and some records from adjacent Saudi Arabia. We recognise five large branchiopod crustacean taxa from Qatar (two anostracans, one notostracan, and two spinicaudatans) and provide new locality records from Umm Alshkoot and correct some previous literature statements. In addition, we comment on the likelihood of another ten taxa to occur in or near Qatar.

High diversity and local endemism in Aotearoa New Zealand's groundwater crustacean fauna.

We used DNA barcoding to assess the diversity and distribution of New Zealand's groundwater amphipods and isopods (Crustacea) and to determine whether biodiversity and endemism within tectonically active New Zealand are similar to those of more tectonically stable continents. Sixty‐five wells were sampled in seven aquifers across four regions within the North and South islands of New Zealand, and resident invertebrates were morphologically identified and then assessed using sequencing of the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit one (COI) gene. Invertebrates were found in 54 wells. Of the 228 individual amphipods and isopods found in 36 of the wells, 154 individuals were successfully sequenced for COI (68% success rate) from 25 wells, with at least one well in each aquifer containing sequenced individuals. Of the 45 putative species identified using Barcode Index Numbers (BINs), 30 BINs (78% of all taxa and 83% of amphipods) were previously unrecorded. Substantial morphologically cryptic, species‐level diversity was revealed, particularly within the amphipod Family Paraleptamphopidae. Similarly, one isopod taxon morphologically identified as Cruregens fontanus was assigned to five well‐separated BINs based on COI sequences. Endemism appeared high, with all taxa regionally endemic; 87% of species were restricted to one aquifer and more than 50% restricted to one well. Non‐saturated species accumulation curves indicated that, while additional sampling may increase the range of some currently identified taxa, additional range‐restricted taxa are also likely to be discovered. Patterns of diversity and short‐range endemism were similar to those found elsewhere, including locations which are more tectonically stable. The predominance of local endemism within New Zealand's groundwater fauna suggests that land‐use activities and groundwater extraction require careful evaluation to minimize threats to groundwater biodiversity.
