WHICH SCALE TO ASSESS PAIN SELF-EFFICACY SHOWS BETTER MEASUREMENT PROPERTIES IN CHRONIC LOW BACK PAIN? A HEAD-TO-HEAD COMPARISON STUDY

Objectiveto compare the quality of the measurement properties of PSEQ-10, PSEQ-4 and PSEQ-2 and CPSS (long-form: CPSS-LF and short-form: CPSS-SF) in patients with Chronic Low Back Pain (CLBP). Main outcome measuresPain self-efficacy questionnaires were administered in three occasions: baseline assessment, one-week after the first assessment (reliability) and after an eight-week exercise program (responsiveness). The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Cronbach's α were used to assess reliability and internal consistency, respectively. Pearson's correlation and confirmatory factor analysis were used to assess construct validity. The area under the curve and hypothesis testing were used to assess responsiveness. ResultsNone difference was observed for all the questionnaires regarding internal consistency (Cronbach's α>.7), criterion validity (r>.88) and reliability (ICC>.7). The scales confirmed more than 75% of the hypotheses for the construct validity, except for CPSS-SF. PSEQ-2 did not meet the criterion for structural validity. PSEQ-10 met all the criteria for good measurement properties according to COSMIN. ConclusionsIt was not possible to calculate structural validity for PSEQ-2, CPSS-SF did not meet the criterion for suitable hypothesis testing for construct validity and all the questionnaires did not show suitable measurement error, except for the PSEQ-10. Hence, the PSEQ-10 was the unique scale that met all the criteria for good measurement properties for assessing pain self-efficacy in CLBP.

Cross-cultural evaluation of the Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire: a systematic review

This systematic review aims to provide a comprehensive synthesis and in-depth analysis of the quality of the different cross-cultural versions of the MHQ. This study was conducted using Pubmed, Web of Science, CINAHL and SCOPUS databases to identify cross-cultural validation studies of the MHQ. Methodological quality, quality of evidence and criteria for good measurement properties of these studies were applied for each psychometric property. Quality assessment and data extraction were performed independently by two reviewers according to the COnsensus-based Standards for selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) guidelines. A total of 493 articles were identified, of which 22 were included and 20 were analysed.Of the six properties analysed, responsiveness and hypothesis testing for construct validity had the highest methodological quality and quality of evidence, and met the criteria for good measurement properties. The lowest quality properties were measurement error and internal consistency. The different cross-cultural versions of the MHQ were found to be reliable, valid and able to detect clinical change. The lack of development of measurement error, formulation of an a priori hypothesis or structural validity affects the detection of small clinical changes and their discriminative capacity.

Reliability, validity, and responsiveness of a smartphone-based manikin to support pain self-reporting.

Many people worldwide suffer from chronic pain. Improving our knowledge on chronic pain prevalence and management requires methods to collect pain self-reports in large populations. Smartphone-based tools could aid data collection by allowing people to use their own device, but the measurement properties of such tools are largely unknown. To assess the reliability, validity, and responsiveness of a smartphone-based manikin to support pain self-reporting. We recruited people with fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, and/or osteoarthritis and access to a smartphone and the internet. Data collection included the Global Pain Scale at baseline and follow-up, and 30 daily pain drawings completed on a 2-dimensional, gender-neutral manikin. After deriving participants' pain extent from their manikin drawings, we evaluated convergent and discriminative validity, test-retest reliability, and responsiveness and assessed findings against internationally agreed criteria for good measurement properties. We recruited 131 people; 104 were included in the full sample, submitting 2185 unique pain drawings. Manikin-derived pain extent had excellent test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient, 0.94), moderate convergent validity (ρ, 0.46), and an ability to distinguish fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis from rheumatoid arthritis (F statistics, 30.41 and 14.36, respectively; P < 0.001). Responsiveness was poor (ρ, 0.2; P, 0.06) and did not meet the respective criterion for good measurement properties. Our findings suggest that smartphone-based manikins can be a reliable and valid method for pain self-reporting, but that further research is warranted to explore, enhance, and confirm the ability of such manikins to detect a change in pain over time.

Measurement properties of cervical joint position error in people with and without neck pain: a systematic review and narrative synthesis

IntroductionProprioception can be impaired in people with neck pain. The cervical joint position sense test, which measures joint position error (JPE), is the most common test used to assess neck proprioception. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the measurement properties of this test for the assessment of people with and without neck pain.MethodsThis systematic review was registered prospectively on Prospero (CRD42020188715). It was designed using the COSMIN guidelines and reported in line with the PRISMA checklist. Two reviewers independently searched Medline, Embase, SportDiscus, and CINAHL Plus databases from inception to the 24th July 2022 with an update of the search conducted until 14th of October 2023. The COSMIN risk of bias checklist was used to assess the risk of bias in each study. The updated criteria for good measurement properties were used to rate individual studies and then the overall pooled results. The level of evidence was rated by two reviewers independently using a modified GRADE approach.ResultsFifteen studies were included in this review, 13 reporting absolute JPE and 2 reporting constant JPE. The measurement properties assessed were reliability, measurement error, and validity. The measurement of JPE showed sufficient reliability and validity, however, the level of evidence was low/very low for both measurement properties, apart from convergent validity of the constant JPE, which was high.ConclusionThe measure of cervical JPE showed sufficient reliability and validity but with low/very low levels of evidence. Further studies are required to investigate the reliability and validity of this test as well as the responsiveness of the measure.

Psychometric Properties of Patient-reported Outcome Measures to Assess Resilience in Individuals with Musculoskeletal Pain or Rheumatic Conditions: A COSMIN-based Systematic Review.

The objective of this systematic review was to provide a comprehensive overview of the measurement properties of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) used to assess resilience in individuals with musculoskeletal and rheumatic conditions. Four electronic databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science) were searched. Studies assessing any measurement property in the target populations were included. Two reviewers independently screened all studies and assessed risk of bias using the COSMIN checklist. Thereafter, each measurement property of each PROM was classified as sufficient, insufficient, or inconsistent based on the COSMIN criteria for good measurement properties. Four families of PROMs (Brief Resilient Coping Scale [BRCS]; Resilience Scale [RS-18]; Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale [CD-RISC-10 and CD-RISC-2]; and Pain Resilience Scale [PRS-14 and PRS-12]) were identified from the 9 included studies. Even if no PROM showed sufficient evidence for all measurement properties, the PRS and CD-RISC had the most properties evaluated and showed the best measurement properties; although responsiveness still needs to be assessed for both PROMs. Both PROMs showed good level of reliability (intraclass coefficient correlation 0.61 to 0.8) and good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha ≥0.70). Minimal detectable change values were 24.5% for PRS and between 4.7% and 29.8% for CD-RISC. Although BRCS, RS-18, CD-RISC or PRS have been used to evaluated resilience in individuals with musculoskeletal and rheumatic conditions, the current evidence only supports the use of PRS or CD-RISC in this population. Further methodological studies are therefore needed and should prioritize the assessment of reliability and responsiveness.

Quality of patient-reported outcome measures for primary dysmenorrhea: a systematic review

PurposeTo conduct a systematic review of the quality of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) for primary dysmenorrhea (PDys) using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) methodology, and to derive recommendations for use of the PROMs.MethodsWe searched PubMed and Web of Science for studies reporting on the development and/or validation of any PROMs for women with PDys. Applying the COSMIN Risk of Bias Checklist, we assessed the methodological quality of each included study. We further evaluated the quality of measurement properties per PROM and study according to the criteria for good measurement properties, and graded the evidence. Based on the overall evidence, we derived recommendations for the use of the included PROMs.ResultsData from seven studies reporting on four PROMs addressing different outcomes were included. Among those, the Adolescent Dysmenorrhic Self-Care Scale (ADSCS) and the on-menses version of the Dysmenorrhea Symptom Interference Scale (DSI) can be recommended for use. The Exercise of Self-Care Agency Scale (ESCAS) and the Dysmenorrhea Daily Diary (DysDD) have the potential to be recommended for use, but require further validation. The off-menses version of the DSI cannot be recommended for use.ConclusionsThe ADSCS can be recommended for the assessment of self-care behavior in PDys. Regarding measures of impact, the on-menses version of the DSI is a suitable tool. Covering the broadest spectrum of outcomes, the DysDD is promising for use in medical care and research, encouraging further investigations. Further validation studies are indicated for all included PROMs.

Chinese CSUQ: Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Evaluation of Measurement Properties

The Computer System Usability Questionnaire is one of the most popular standardized usability questionnaires used to assess the perceived usability of computer software, and it has been rigorously translated into multiple languages. This article aims to complete the cross-cultural adaptation of CSUQ in a Chinese environment and examine the psychometric characteristics. We used the forward–backward translation method to complete the initial translation, and designed the psychometric experiment according to the measurement properties required by the consensus-based standards for the selection of health measurement instruments (COSMIN). The COSMIN risk of bias checklist and updated criteria for good measurement properties were used to examine the Chinese CSUQ. The results demonstrated good performance of the Chinese CSUQ in content validity, internal structure and the remaining measurement properties. The results of the factor analysis revealed a three-factor structure, as well as any discrepancy between the Chinese CSUQ and its original version. Therefore, the Chinese CSUQ can be used confidently by Chinese usability practitioners and also serve as an effective alternative to other standardized usability scales.

Properties of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in North Korean Defectors: A Scoping Review.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is highly prevalent among North Korean defectors. This scoping review aimed to appraise the measurement properties of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) that assess PTSD among North Korean defectors. A systematic search was conducted using Research Information Sharing Service, ScienceON, PubMed, and Embase from their inception up to September 15, 2022. Each measurement properties of the included PROMs were evaluated using COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) methodology. First, the methodological quality of each study on measurement properties was evaluated using the COSMIN Risk of Bias checklist. Second, the result of each single study on a measurement property was rated against the updated criteria for good measurement properties. After screening the articles, nine instruments from 40 studies were included. Among these instruments, Impact of Event ScaleRevised was the most frequently used (13 studies [38.1%]), followed by the Trauma Scale for North Korean Refugees, PTSD Checklist, and Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale. The theoretical basis of all PROMs was secure in terms of content validity. The most frequently tested characteristics in measurement properties for internal structure were internal consistency, criterion validity, and convergent validity. No study reported sufficient structural validity as confirmatory factor analysis results with a model fit. There is insufficient evidence to support the recommendation of a specific PROM for use among North Korean defectors with PTSD.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the measurement properties of concerns-about-falling instruments in older people and people at increased risk of falls.

The 16-item Falls Efficacy Scale International (FES-I) is widely used to assess concerns-about-falling. Variants include 7-item Short FES-I, 30-item Iconographical Falls Efficacy Scale (Icon FES) and 10-item short Icon FES. No comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis has been conducted to synthesise evidence regarding the measurement properties of these tools. To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the measurement properties of four FES-I variants. MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL Plus, PsycINFO and Web of Science were searched systematically and articles were assessed for eligibility independently. The methodological quality of eligible studies was assessed using COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) Risk of Bias checklist. The quality of measurement properties was assessed using COSMIN criteria for good measurement properties. Where possible, meta-analysis was conducted; otherwise, narrative synthesis was performed. Overall certainty of evidence was rated using a modified Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation system approach. The review included 58 studies investigating measurement properties of the four instruments. There was high-quality evidence to support internal consistency, reliability and construct validity of all instruments. Moderate- to high-certainty evidence suggests one-factor structure of FES-I with two underlying dimensions, one-factor structure of Short FES-I and two-factor structure of Icon FES. There was high-certainty evidence to support the responsiveness of FES-I, with further research needed for the other instruments. There is evidence for excellent measurement properties of all four instruments. We recommend the use of these tools with healthy older people and people at a greater risk of falls due to conditions that might affect mobility and balance.

Patient-reported outcome measures for uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women: a systematic review

PurposeTo conduct a systematic review of the quality of existing patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) for use in women with uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) applying the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) methodology, and to derive recommendations for their use in future research.MethodsA systematic literature search was performed in PubMed and Web of Science. Studies reporting on the development and/or validation of any PROMs for uncomplicated UTIs in women were considered eligible. We evaluated the methodological quality of each included study using the COSMIN Risk of Bias Checklist, and further applied predefined criteria for good measurement properties. Finally, we graded the evidence and derived recommendations for the use of the included PROMs.ResultsData from 23 studies reporting on six PROMs were included. From those, the Acute Cystitis Symptom Score (ACSS) and the Urinary Tract Infection-Symptom and Impairment Questionnaire (UTI-SIQ-8) can be recommended for further use. Both instruments showed sufficient content validity. We further found high-quality evidence for sufficient internal consistency of the UTI-SIQ-8, while this criterion was not assessed for the ACSS due to a formative measurement model. All other PROMs have the potential to be recommended for use, but require further validation.ConclusionThe ACSS and the UTI-SIQ-8 have the potential to be recommended for use in women with uncomplicated UTIs in future clinical trials. For all included PROMs, further validation studies are indicated.Systematic review registration: PROSPERO.

Implementation Leadership in the Point of Care Nursing Context: A Systematic Review Comparing Two Measurement Tools.

Implementation leadership (IL) are effective point of care (POC) nursing leadership behaviors that facilitate contexts conducive to the successful implementation of evidence-based practices (EBPs). However, no systematic evaluation of IL tools validated for the nursing context existed. The purpose of this systematic review was to compare iterations of two IL measurement tools, the Implementation Leadership Scale (ILS) and the iLEAD, for application in a nursing context; and to critically appraise and summarize the methodological quality of studies assessing their psychometric properties. A comprehensive search was conducted in four databases. Two reviewers independently screened titles and abstracts, reviewed full-text articles, and performed extraction into data tables. Statisticians appraised the quality control aspects. Findings were narratively summarized. A total of 247 records were included, where 10 for the ILS (including different versions) and one for the iLEAD met the inclusion criteria. Three studies evaluated the psychometric properties of the ILS in nursing, and its translations into Chinese and Greek. Content validity was deemed to be doubtful for both tools, but the ILS had adequate rating for comprehensiveness; methodological quality was very good for structural validity, internal consistency, hypothesis testing, and responsiveness where applicable for both scales, with the exception of cross-cultural validity which had ratings of adequate and inadequate for versions of the scales. Several study findings met the criteria for good measurement properties. No studies for either tool formally assessed feasibility. Applying validated and contextually relevant tools to evaluate the capacity of nursing leadership to engage in IL in real-world contexts are needed. The ILS shows promise but requires further validation for contexts with diverse and multiple nursing leaders at the POC. Feasibility needs to be further studied.

Psychometric Properties of Instruments to Measure the Well-being of Young Children: A Systematic Review Protocol

Background: Child well-being is an important outcome and has received attention from researchers for decades. Until recently, there has been difficulty in drawing conclusions from these studies because of the wide variety of measures used. Objective: This systematic review aims to summarize and assess the measurement properties of existing child well-being instruments presented in the literature. Methods: This systematic review will focus on studies that evaluated the psychometric properties of instruments to measure the well-being of children ages two to seven. The search strategy will aim to locate studies in the English language completed from 2000 to 2023. The databases to be searched include MEDLINE via PubMed, CINAHL Plus, and Psychology &amp; Behavioral Sciences Collection via EBSCOhost. Proquest Dissertations and Theses, Google Scholar, and ResearchGate will be used to search unpublished studies. Following the search, all identified citations will be collated in Mendeley. The full text of selected citations will be uploaded to JBI-SUMARI, assessed in detail against the inclusion criteria, and critically appraised using the COSMIN Risk of Bias checklist by two independent reviewers. Data will be extracted using JBI-SUMARI by one reviewer and verified by another. Findings will be reported using a narrative synthesis and tables. If possible, a meta-analysis will be performed. The evidence for each measurement property for each instrument will be compared against acknowledged standards for appropriate measurement characteristics using the COSMIN-proposed "criteria for good measurement properties." Expected Results: This systematic review will provide further evidence regarding the measurement properties of instruments used to measure the well-being of children, specifically in the early years. The findings of this study will be disseminated through a conference presentation and publication in a peer-reviewed journal. PROSPERO registration number: CRD4202342T8953.

Analysis of the Structural Characteristics and Psychometric Properties of the Pelvic Floor Bother Questionnaire (PFBQ): A Systematic Review

The Pelvic Floor Bother Questionnaire is a validated and reliable questionnaire that studies the presence and degree of pelvic floor discomfort, providing a global vision of pelvic floor dysfunction. This questionnaire assesses urinary stress incontinence, urinary urgency, urinary frequency, urge urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapses, dysuria, dyspareunia, defecatory dysfunction, fecal incontinence, and the disability it causes to the respondent. The aim of the present study was to analyze the structural characteristics and psychometric properties of the different versions of the pelvic floor bother questionnaire, as well as the methodological quality, the quality of evidence, and the criteria used for good measurement properties. A systematic review was carried out in different databases, such as PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Dialnet, ScienceDirect, and CINAHL, on studies adapting and validating the pelvic floor bother questionnaire in other languages. The data were analyzed taking into account the guidelines of the preferred reporting item statement for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) and following the COSMIN guidelines, considering articles published up to 28 February 2022, and registered in the PROSPERO database. Initially, a total of 443 studies were found, from which a total of four studies were analyzed with regard to structural characteristics and psychometric properties, such as reliability, internal consistency, construct validity, and criterion validity. The different versions of the questionnaires show basic structural characteristics and psychometric properties for the evaluation of patients with pelvic floor dysfunctions. Most of the analyzed versions present criteria for good measurement properties qualified as sufficient, inadequate-adequate methodological quality, and low-moderate quality of evidence.

Measurement properties of outcome measures used in neurological telerehabilitation: A systematic review using COSMIN checklist

Objective To summarize the measurement properties (reliability, validity, and responsiveness) and the clinical utility of measurement tools used in telerehabilitation in individuals with neurological conditions. Design Systematic review. Subjects Individuals with neurological conditions. Intervention Not applicable. Main measures The methodological quality of the studies using the COSMIN Risk of Bias Checklist, the quality of the measurement properties using the criteria for good measurement properties, and the clinical utility of the measurements using the Tyson & Connell scale. Results From the 22,188 identified studies, 47 were included. Forty-three measurement tools were identified. The main modes of administration were telephone and videoconference. Studies involved mostly individuals with stroke, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease. Criterion validity and reliability were the most investigated measurement properties. None of the tools had their responsiveness investigated. Twenty-two measurement tools have at least one measurement property evaluated as “sufficient” in a study with appropriate methodological quality (“very good” or “adequate”). Nineteen measurement tools showed adequate clinical utility. Eight measurement tools, investigated in individuals with stroke, spinal cord injury or Alzheimer's disease, all administered by telephone, were recommended. Conclusion The present results can be used to assist in choosing appropriate measurement tools, both in research and clinical practice, during telerehabilitation in individuals with neurological conditions. Measurement error, content validity, structural validity, and responsiveness need to be further investigated. In addition, the measurement properties of tools used in telerehabilitation in other neurological conditions, such as Huntington's disease, should also be investigated. Psychometric Properties of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale in Individuals With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Protocol for a Systematic Review.

BackgroundIn individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), anxiety and depression contribute to increased mortality and exacerbations, decreased physical functioning, and deteriorated health-related quality of life. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) is a patient-reported tool developed to measure symptoms of anxiety and depression in clinical settings. The HADS has been frequently used with individuals with COPD; however, its measurement properties lack critical appraisal in this population.ObjectiveThis review aims to summarize and critically appraise the validity, reliability, and responsiveness of the HADS in individuals with COPD.MethodsFive electronic databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, PsychINFO, and Web of Science) will be systematically searched. Articles will be included if they assessed the measurement properties of the HADS in COPD; were published in a peer-reviewed journal; and were written in English. The COSMIN (Consensus-based Standards for the Selection of Health Measurement Instruments) guidelines will be used to assess the methodological quality and level of evidence in the selected studies.ResultsTo date, 12 articles met the inclusion criteria and will be included in the systematic review. The results of the psychometric properties of HADS will be qualitatively summarized and compared against the criteria for good measurement properties. The overall quality of evidence will be graded using the modified Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach. We expect to complete the systematic review by December 2022.ConclusionsThis systematic review will be the first to evaluate the psychometric properties of the HADS in individuals with COPD. Measurement Properties of Remotely or Self-Administered Lower Extremity Mobility Performance Measures in Adults: A Systematic Review.

For individuals who face barriers to care assessment, there is a need for remote administration or self-administration of physical performance measures that assess mobility to determine current functional status and to monitor and predict future changes in functional status. The primary purpose of this review is to evaluate the available measurement properties of scores for remotely or self-administered lower extremity mobility performance measures in adults. This review also outlines the test procedures and population suitability of these measures. Data sources were Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, EBSCOhost CINAHL, Ovid AMED, and Cochrane CENTRAL-which were searched from inception to January 26, 2021-and the reference lists of relevant studies. Two individuals independently screened studies that assessed at least 1 prespecified measurement property of scores for a remote and/or self-administered lower extremity physical performance measure assessing mobility in an adult population. Two individuals independently extracted data on study characteristics, measurement properties, feasibility, and interpretability using piloted extraction forms. The COSMIN (COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments) Risk of Bias tool was used to assess methodological quality. Data were qualitatively summarized, and results were compared against COSMIN's criteria for good measurement properties. Level of evidence was determined using COSMIN's modified GRADE approach. Fourteen studies detailing 19 outcome measures were included. Many studies displayed "sufficient" measurement properties based on COSMIN's criteria; however, risk of bias for most of the included studies was rated adequate or doubtful. Clinicians and researchers can consider the measurement properties of scores and feasibility of different approaches presented in this review when determining how to assess or monitor mobility in adult populations. Assessing mobility via remote or self-administered physical performance measures in adult populations appears to be feasible using a variety of methods including simple tools (chair, stopwatch), videoconferencing, and smartphone applications. This strategy may be particularly valuable for self-management of chronic conditions and decreasing barriers to accessing care.

Imagery ability assessments: a cross-disciplinary systematic review and quality evaluation of psychometric properties

BackgroundOver the last two centuries, researchers developed several assessments to evaluate the multidimensional construct of imagery. However, no comprehensive systematic review (SR) exists for imagery ability evaluation methods and an in-depth quality evaluation of their psychometric properties.MethodsWe performed a comprehensive systematic search in six databases in the disciplines of sport, psychology, medicine, education: SPORTDiscus, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, and ERIC. Two reviewers independently identified and screened articles for selection. COSMIN checklist was used to evaluate the methodological quality of the studies. All included assessments were evaluated for quality using criteria for good measurement properties. The evidence synthesis was summarised by using the GRADE approach.ResultsIn total, 121 articles reporting 155 studies and describing 65 assessments were included. We categorised assessments based on their construct on: (1) motor imagery (n = 15), (2) mental imagery (n = 48) and (3) mental chronometry (n = 2). Methodological quality of studies was mainly doubtful or inadequate. The psychometric properties of most assessments were insufficient or indeterminate. The best rated assessments with sufficient psychometric properties were MIQ, MIQ-R, MIQ-3, and VMIQ-2 for evaluation of motor imagery ability. Regarding mental imagery evaluation, only SIAQ and VVIQ showed sufficient psychometric properties.ConclusionVarious assessments exist to evaluate an individual’s imagery ability within different dimensions or modalities of imagery in different disciplines. However, the psychometric properties of most assessments are insufficient or indeterminate. Several assessments should be revised and further validated. Moreover, most studies were only evaluated with students. Further cross-disciplinary validation studies are needed including older populations with a larger age range. Our findings allow clinicians, coaches, teachers, and researchers to select a suitable imagery ability assessment for their setting and goals based on information about the focus and quality of the assessments.Systematic reviews registerPROSPERO CRD42017077004.

Measurement Properties of the Polymyalgia Rheumatica Activity Score: A Systematic Literature Review.

To perform a COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN)-based systematic literature review of measurement properties of the Polymyalgia Rheumatica Activity Score (PMR-AS). PubMed, EMBASE, and CINAHL were broadly searched. English full-text articles, with (quantitative) data on ≥ 5 patients with PMR using the PMR-AS were selected. Seven hypotheses for construct validity and 3 for responsiveness, concerning associations with erythrocyte sedimentation rate, physical function, quality of life, clinical disease states, ultrasound, and treatment response, were formulated. We assessed the structural validity, internal consistency, reliability, and measurement error, or the hypotheses on construct validity or responsiveness of the PMR-AS based on COSMIN criteria. Out of the identified 26 articles that used the PMR-AS, we were able to use 12 articles. Structural validity, internal consistency, construct validity, and responsiveness were assessed in 1, 2, 8, and 3 articles, respectively. Insufficient evidence was found to confirm structural validity and internal consistency. No data were found on reliability or measurement error. Although 60% and 67% of hypotheses tested for construct validity and responsiveness, respectively, were confirmed, there was insufficient evidence to meet criteria for good measurement properties. While there is some promising evidence for construct validity and responsiveness of the PMR-AS, it is lacking for other properties and, overall, falls short of criteria for good measurement properties. Therefore, further research is needed to assess its role in clinical research and care.

Patient-reported outcome measures for masticatory function in adults: a systematic review

ObjectiveThe aim of this systematic review was to critically evaluate the Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) for masticatory function in adults.MethodsFive electronic databases (Medline, Embase, Web of Science Core Collection, CINAHL Plus and APA PsycINFO) were searched up to March 2021. Studies reporting development or validation of PROMs for masticatory function on adults were identified. Methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) risk of bias checklist. Psychometric properties of the PROM in each included study were rated against the criteria for good measurement properties based on the COSMIN guideline.ResultsTwenty-three studies investigating 19 PROMs were included. Methodological qualities of these studies were diverse. Four types of PROMs were identified: questions using food items to assess masticatory function (13 PROMs), questions on chewing problems (3 PROMs), questions using both food items and chewing problems (2 PROMs) and a global question (1 PROM). Only a few of these PROMs, namely chewing function questionnaire-Chinese, Croatian or Albanian, food intake questionnaire-Japanese, new food intake questionnaire-Japanese, screening for masticatory disorders in older adults and perceived difficulty of chewing-Tanzania demonstrated high or moderate level of evidence in several psychometric properties.ConclusionsCurrently, there is no PROM for masticatory function in adults with high-level evidence for all psychometric properties. There are variations in the psychometric properties among the different reported PROMs.Trial Registration PROSPERO (CRD42020171591).

Measuring self-efficacy and outcome expectancy in evidence-based practice: A systematic review on psychometric properties.

Evidence-based practice has developed over the last 30 years as a tool for the best possible nursing care. Nevertheless, many nurses do not regularly participate in the evidence-based practice process. Barriers to participation include nurses' self-perceived ability in successfully fulfilling evidence-based practice-related tasks (self-efficacy) and their expectations of the positive outcomes of such tasks (outcome expectancy). To evaluate progress and provide feedback to professionals, monitoring the levels of self-efficacy and outcome expectancy with validated instruments is desirable. A comprehensive overview of the psychometric properties of such instruments is lacking. To determine the psychometric properties of instruments designed to measure nurses' self-efficacy and outcome expectancy in evidence-based practice. This systematic review was performed on studies reporting psychometric properties of instruments that measure self-efficacy and outcome expectancy in EBP. MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL databases were searched up to March 2020. Studies that reported psychometric properties on eligible scales and studied nurses or other healthcare professionals were included. Psychometric properties included content validity, construct validity, reliability, and responsiveness. The COSMIN risk of bias checklist and criteria for good measurement properties were applied independently by two reviewers. This review is registered with PROSPERO (CRD42020183069). Eleven scales measuring self-efficacy or a similar construct and one scale measuring outcome expectancy were identified. The vast majority of the research focused on nurses. Internal consistency and structural validity were the most frequently reported properties, though the recommended confirmative factor analysis to verify the structural validity was rarely performed correctly. In addition, most studies that reported on construct validity did not hypothesise on the expected strength or direction of an effect before the data analysis. Responsiveness was not typically reported or was incorrectly studied. The included articles showed a high quality of evidence for four scales on structural validity and internal consistency. The Self-Efficacy in Evidence-Based Practice Activities scale showed the best content validity and was accompanied by an Outcome Expectations of Evidence-Based Practice scale. Both scales met the COSMIN standards for construct validity with high-quality evidence. In light of the evidence, the Self-Efficacy in Evidence-Based Practice Activities scale is considered promising, and along with the accompanying Outcome Expectations of Evidence-Based Practice scale, appears capable of accurately measuring both self-efficacy and outcome expectancy. The use of these scales is recommended, and further research should be conducted on the responsiveness of the scales.
