A Comprehensive Examination of the Influence of Enhanced Leadership Practices on the Sustainable Development of Enterprises

In the current competitive business landscape, enhancing leadership plays a vital role in the sustainable growth of enterprises. Effective leadership can steer the company to progress consistently through change and reach sustainable development objectives. This paper examines the relationship between leadership promotion and the sustainable development of enterprises. It analyzes how leadership impacts various aspects, including formulating enterprise strategy, shaping organizational culture, employee motivation, resource integration capabilities, innovation, and crisis management. Synergizing Plasmonic Local Heating and 3D Nanostructures to Boost the Solar-to-Vapor Efficiency Beyond 100.

Solving the global challenge of freshwater scarcity is of great significance for over one billion people in the world. Solar water evaporation based on plasmonic nanostructures is one of the most promising technologies due to its high efficiency. However, the efficiency of this plasmonic nanostructure-based technology can hardly achieve 100%. Therefore, it is highly desired to develop new solar converters utilizing plasmonic local heating and reasonable structure design to break the limit of solar-to-vapor efficiency for freshwater production. Here, a plasmonic sponge is developed as a solar evaporation converter with excellent full-solar-spectrum absorption, good heat localization performance, and fast evaporation kinetics through 3D nanostructures, achieving a 131% solar-to-vapor efficiency. Distinct from the traditional 2D localized heating-based evaporation and nonmetallic 3D water evaporation, the 3D plasmonic sponge can simultaneously achieve highly efficient local heating and super large water-air interfaces for boosting solar-to-vapor efficiency. The 3D plasmonic sponge can be also used as a universal converter for purifying seawater, metal ion solutions, organic pollutant solutions, and strong acid and strong alkaline solutions. The full-solar-spectrum absorption, high efficiency, and universality in water purification suggest that the novel 3D plasmonic solar converter can bring a significant way to alleviate the crisis of freshwater resources.

How employees’ dynamic capabilities influence job performance across different stages of a crisis?

Abstract The article investigates the impact of employees’ dynamic capabilities (EDC) on job performance during various stages of a crisis in an organisation caused by a Black Swan event, mediated by job-related attitudes, such as person-job fit, work motivation, job satisfaction, and work engagement, based on EDC model of job performance. The article includes a critical literature review of the role of EDC and each job-related attitude in shaping employee job performance during a crisis caused by a Black Swan event as the basis for hypothesis development. The proposed hypotheses are verified by empirical studies conducted in 2021 on a sample of 1200 organisations from Poland, the USA, and Italy operating during the active wave of COVID-19. Statistical reasoning was made based on multigroup path analysis performed in IBM SPSS AMOS. The results confirmed the significant role of EDC in enhancing job performance during a crisis and revealed that work motivation is the most influential job-related attitude through which EDC impacts job performance across all stages of the crisis. The article contributes to the theory of human resource management and crisis management, presenting a comprehensive model of job performance based on EDC for various stages of a crisis caused by a Black Swan event. It also contributes to practice, showing entrepreneurs which work-related attitudes are crucial for obtaining the most benefit from EDC, enabling its proper translation into job performance growth. The article shows that work-related attitudes have a different value for shaping job performance, depending on the stage of crisis (caused by a Black Swan event) in which the organisation operates. Moreover, it confirms that EDC enables the possibility to obtain and maintain satisfactory job performance during a crisis, which suggests that EDC should be considered one of the new competitive advantages of contemporary organisations operating in the post-COVID-19 reality.

Improved chloride binding capacity in sustainable metakaolin blended seawater cement mortar: Effect of external alternative electric field

Seawater is a promising substitution of fresh water in concrete production to relieve the resource crisis, especially for the concrete fabricated in harsh environment with less freshwater supply, while the excessive chloride ion (Cl-) in seawater may induce severe durability issue. In this work, metakaolin (MK) was used as supplementary cementitious material to prepare seawater cement mortar (SWCM), and ohmic heating (OH) curing was utilized to fabricate MK-SWCM at -20 °C by creating high temperature curing condition, with conductive carbon fibers (CFs) as electrical reinforcement media. The CFs fraction was numerically and experimentally obtained as 1.0 vol%, the electrical resistivity, electric voltage and curing temperature change during OH process was disclosed. Results showed that MK inclusion and OH curing both contributed to enhancing the Cl- binding capacity with higher hydration degree and denser pore structure. To be specific, OH cured SWCM with 10% MK content endowed the Cl- binding ratio of 35.4%, meeting the increase of 97.8% compared to that of room temperature cured SWCM with no MK addition. Moreover, the mechanical strengths were further proven excellent for winter production in cold environment, which were all above 60 MPa with the aid of OH curing. A systematical analysis was conducted to roundly clarify the benefits for MK-SWCM fabrication in cold region from the aspects of Cl- binding capacity efficiency, environmental benefits and mechanical strength.

Despite their potential, the implementation of GIS and data analytics faces challenges such as data quality issues, financial and technical constraints, privacy concerns, and resistance to change within bureaucratic systems. This review discusses these barriers and offers insights into overcoming them through advancements in technology, collaborative governance models, and increased stakeholder engagement. This concludes by emphasizing the transformative role of GIS and data analytics in fostering more transparent, efficient, and sustainable urban governance. By embracing these tools, public sector entities can better anticipate and address societal needs, paving the way for more resilient and inclusive communities. Future opportunities include leveraging artificial intelligence, expanding GIS use cases, and fostering international collaboration to further enhance public sector and urban planning outcomes.

Effect of different deficit irrigation regimens on soil moisture, production parameters of mango (Mangifera indica L.), and spectral vegetation indices in the Mediterranean region of Southern Spain

Mediterranean region is facing a severe water resource crisis, exacerbated by climate change. In recent decades, the region has experienced increased anthropogenic pressure due to population growth, tourism, and urban and agricultural expansion, intensifying competition for water among economic sectors. The agri-food sector is one of the most affected by water scarcity. This presents significant challenges for the sustainability of irrigated crops and underscores the need for efficient irrigation strategies and adaptive mechanisms. Among innovative strategies is deficit irrigation. In this context, to ensure effective water management, it is essential to constantly monitor soil moisture and adapt water conditions to the specific requirements of each crop. Precision agriculture, supported by technologies such as remote sensing and UAVs, plays a fundamental role in this context, enabling detailed crop monitoring and facilitating more efficient irrigation management. This study aims to evaluate the impact of using three different irrigation treatments on mango cultivation, a subtropical crop of growing importance in the Mediterranean region. Specifically, Treatment 1 is based on conventional surface drip irrigation without restrictions; Treatment 2 involves conventional surface drip irrigation with a 65% water reduction; and Treatment 3 uses deep subsurface drip irrigation (20 cm), with a similar water restriction as the previous treatment. The effect on mango cultivation has been evaluated based on: (i) soil moisture, (ii) production data collected during the 2022–2023 growing season on the experimental plot; and (iii) two vegetation indices (NDVI and NDRE) derived from multispectral data collected via two UAV flights at different phenological stages. The results indicate that surface drip irrigation has shown better outcomes in terms of production, yield, and crop quality compared to other treatments involving significant water reductions or subsurface irrigation. Deep deficit irrigation has obtained the worst results in the evaluation of plant production, and yield.

The anesthesia human resources crisis in Canada.

Human resources are essential to the safe and effective functioning of any health care system. Pressure on the health care workforce is of active global concern. There appears to be an anesthesia service delivery crisis in Canada. Recent media headlines have featured vacant physician anesthesiologist positions, closure of maternity units, and postponement of elective surgeries because of a shortage of anesthesiologists. This shortage is most serious in rural and remote communities. This has prompted the Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society to publish a position statement on "Strategies to Address the Surgical Backlog and Health Human Resource Issues in Anesthesia."In this article, we discuss the composition and organization of the anesthesia workforce in Canada. We compare the Canadian anesthesia workforce to other Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries. We contend that the current anesthesia provision model in Canada is not meeting population needs and outline potential solutions to the anesthesia human resources crisis. These include increasing the numbers of anesthesiologists in training, encouraging international medical graduates to migrate to Canada, and various different approaches to task shifting and task sharing.

Highly efficient solar seawater evaporation by aerogel with vertical channels and hierarchical pores structure based on high-absorbent alginate fibers

Utilizing interfacial evaporation under sunlight is an effective way for desalination. Researchers have developed various solar evaporators to replace traditional processes. However, crystalline salt deposition and low evaporation rates have hindered the application of solar evaporators, which remain critical challenges in the field. Inspired by vascular plants, a novel strategy using natural high-absorbent alginate fibers as the aerogel backbone and polypyrrole as the solar absorber was employed to prepare an eco-friendly solar evaporator in this study. The biomimetic evaporator with abundant hydrophilic groups, vertical channels, and hierarchical pores structure inside achieves a maximum evaporation efficiency of 4.27 kg m-2h−1 under one solar intensity radiation, with an energy efficiency of more than 99 %. The nano polymer photo absorbents provide composite aerogels with excellent light absorption and mechanical properties, maintaining their shape and evaporation efficiency even after repeated use dozens of times. Its unique structures reduce water transport resistance radially to provide a fast water transport channel and efficiently desalinate, preventing salt from crystallizing on the evaporator surface. Obtaining a structurally controllable solar-driven evaporator in this way is expected to be used on a large scale for high-efficiency water purification, solving the freshwater resource crisis.

FeOOH Quantum Dots Assembled MXene-Decorated 3D Photothermal Evaporator for Synergy Application in Solar Evaporation and Fenton Degradation.

Solar-driven water evaporation is considered as the sustainable approach to alleviate freshwater resource crisis through direct use of solar energy. However, it is still challenging to achieve the multifunctional solar evaporators equipped with both high evaporation and purification performance to handle practical complex wastewater. Here, a simple and cost-effective multifunctional 3D solar evaporator is prepared by alternately decorating the commercial sponge with FeOOH quantum dots (FQDs) supported MXene sheets composites and chitosan hydrogel coatings for enabling the solar water evaporation and organic wastewater photodegradation simultaneously. MXene composites allow the solar evaporator with excellent photothermal conversion performance, the hydrophilic chitosan hydrogel coated interconnecting skeleton structures of sponge serve as the mass transfer and water transport channels. The Fenton-catalytic FQDs anchored on the MXene sheets surface accept the photo-generated electrons of MXene sheets to induce the organic pollutant photo-Fenton degradation reaction under sunlight irradiation. The resulting evaporator possesses both excellent water evaporation rate of 2.54kg m-2h-1 and high degradation efficiency (99.24% for methylene blue), coupled with durable salt-resisting performance during long-term seawater desalination (20 wt.% NaCl). This work provides a simple and feasible strategy for designing multifunctional solar evaporators to meet the potential application scenarios in practice.

Exploring the impact of a clinical extern program on readiness to practice.

The COVID-19 pandemic created an increased demand for healthcare professionals across all healthcare sectors globally. Attrition, retirement, delayed graduations, and sick leaves resulted in an inadequate supply of knowledgeable, skilled, and experienced nurses to care for hospitalized patients and help address hospital capacity pressures. In response to this health human resource crisis in Canada, the Ontario Ministry of Health offered hospitals funding to support the employment of Clinical Externs (CEs), that is, students in nursing, respiratory therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy medicine, and paramedicine, hired to work as unregulated staff, alongside an inter-professional team. This mixed-methods study evaluated the CE program that was implemented in one large academic hospital. The primary aim was to identify the outcomes of the clinical extern program from the perspectives of CEs, CE coordinators, and clinical leaders. Findings indicate the clinical extern program reinforces student confidence and supports their transition to formal nursing and respiratory therapy roles.

Hierarchical TiO2-coated metal-organic framework-derived carbon material for efficient co-generation of drinkable water and electricity

Co-generation of drinkable water and electricity through interface solar steam generation process is gradually becoming the preferred strategy to solve the current energy shortage and freshwater resources crisis. Inspired by the biological channel structures, flexible carbonized TiO2@Co-MOF nickel foam (CTCNF) based photothermal material with hierarchical nano-arrays structure is successfully fabricated on nickel foam surfaces by atomic layer deposition combined with an ingenious carbonization scheme, which endows CTCNF with combined excellent abilities including seawater desalination, evaporation-induced electricity generation, and wastewater purification, that is a three-in-one photothermal configuration. With the synergistic photothermal effect and hierarchical structure, CTCNF achieves a solar absorption efficiency of 93.65 %. Moreover, benefiting from its abundant oxygen- and nitrogen- containing functional groups, CTCNF not only possesses excellent hydrophilicity and salt resistance, but also reduces the water evaporation enthalpy (from 2453.3 J g−1 to 1378.6 J g−1). Importantly, combined with ingenious design of the evaporation device, CTCNF not only capture energy from environment during the evaporation process, with an evaporation rate of 3.60 kg m−2 h−1 and an evaporation efficiency of 109.9 % under 1 sun, but also obtains an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 151.15 mV. This enriches the design ideas of high-performance photothermal materials for efficient co-generation of drinkable water and electricity.

Resilience Assessment and Influencing Factors Analysis of Water Security System in the Yellow River Basin

The assessment and regulation of water security system resilience (WSSR) are important ways to alleviate water resource crises. On the basis of the three characteristics of resilience, namely, resistance, restoration, and adaptability, an evaluation index system of the WSSR was built for the Yellow River Basin (YRB). A projection pursuit model based on the sparrow search algorithm (SSA-PP model) was constructed to assess the WSSR at the overall and provincial scales from 2009 to 2022. The factors influencing the spatial distribution patterns of WSSR was identified through factor detector and interactive detector techniques. The results revealed that: (1) From 2009 to 2022, the YRB exhibited a rising trend in WSSR, with the western region attaining the peak level, and the eastern region recording the lowest magnitude. (2) the adaptability capacity of most provinces and regions in the YRB tended to decrease to about 1.0, whereas the resistance and restoration capacities tended to increase towards 2.0. (3) Factors relevant to the restoration and adaptability subsystems, such as the development and utilization ratio of water resources and surface water resources (B2 and B3), water resource load index (C1), water consumption per 10,000 yuan of GDP (C8), and total precipitation (A1), significantly affected the WSSR. The interaction between factors exhibited significant enhancement effects on explanatory. Therefore, targeted countermeasures and recommendations were provided to improve the WSSR in the YRB.

Medical learner perspectives on elements of an educational rural generalist pathway: survey outcomes

IntroductionThe Northern Ontario School of Medicine University (NOSM U) continues to be challenged in meeting its social accountability mandate of addressing the rural health human resource crises in its catchment of Northern Ontario. Its new educational initiative, the Rural Generalist Pathway (RGP) aims to graduate family physicians specifically prepared for rural practice. This study elicits the perspective of NOSM U learners on the various components being considered for this educational pathway.MethodsA mixed methods survey was created for each of two medical learner groups, undergraduate NOSM U students and its family medicine residents. Quantitative data was analyzed for frequencies and percentages and qualitative data underwent thematic analysis.ResultsWith a response rate of 24.6% for undergraduates and 37.9% for residents, the survey discovered undergraduates consider rural clinical rotations as the most valuable experiences in rural medicine. Among the findings, both the majority of medical students and residents (87.3% and 87.9% respectively) agreed that support for a resident’s family well-being and community integration was the element of the pathway most likely to influence them in pursuing the RGP. Mentorship by a practicing rural physician was an element highly supported by 81% of undergraduate and 81.8% of postgraduate learners as likely to influence them to take the RGP.DiscussionIncorporating learner perceptions into the development of the RGP could help focus institutional resources and enhance learner participation in this pathway, producing more rural family doctors to serve Northern Ontario.

An investigation of mixed-model assembly line balancing problem with uncertain assembly time in remanufacturing

In recent decades, remanufacturing has emerged as an effective way to address resource crises and environmental pollution issues. Unlike traditional manufacturing, remanufacturing production is filled with various variable factors, especially in the assembly phase. Due to changes in part types, quality conditions, and assembly methods, the assembly time becomes highly uncertain. Assembly line balancing is a key challenge to achieve the stable operation of remanufacturing system. This study proposes an evaluation method for remanufacturing assembly time and establishes a multi-objective mathematical model for balancing remanufacturing mixed-model assembly (RMMA) line. The evaluation method utilizes the Fuzzy Graphical Evaluation Review Technique (FGERT) network to predict expected assembly time for each operation. The balancing model aims to optimize remanufacturing takt time and comprehensive balance rate (CBR). To effectively solve this model, an adaptive double-layer genetic algorithm (ADGA) is designed, where layer I ensures production efficiency and layer II optimizes assembly line balance. Finally, an assemble example of high-pressure common rail fuel pumps (HCRFP) is used to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results demonstrate notable improvements compared to traditional single-product assembly (TSPA) line in scenarios with workstation numbers 4, 5, 6, and 7. Specifically, the production takt time is reduced by 4.19% to 9.56%, and CBR is enhanced by approximately 50%. Further comparison with three other classic algorithms confirms the superiority of ADGA. Additionally, it is observed that remanufacturability (proportion of remanufactured parts) has a significant impact on assembly performance. As remanufacturability increases, both takt time and CBR increase, reaching their maximum values when remanufacturability is around 0.5.

The Government of Canada identified the health human resources (HHR) crisis as one of the most significant challenges facing Canada’s healthcare system (Health Canada, 2022). The International Council of Nurses cautions the worldwide shortage of nurses should be treated as a global health emergency (ICN, 2023). There is an urgent need to recruit and retain nurses and other healthcare professionals to address staffing shortages across Canada and internationally.

Water as a commodity: challenges and implications of the commercialization of a vital resource

Water, soil, and air are the planet’s natural capitals that have made life viable, and without them, biodiversity will disappear. The drought we are experiencing due to global warming puts everyone on alert to mitigate the risks to these vital common goods. Water is a resource in crisis due to scarcity, misuse, poor distribution to the most vulnerable populations, contamination, and pollution, but it still attracts the private sector's greed. Water privatization, distribution, and basic sanitation services have been touted as a panacea to solve urban problems. Several cities have followed the path of privatization, embracing neoliberal ideologies or using it as a lever to pay off state debts without considering social aspects. Studies demonstrating the positive or negative impacts of privatization are still rare. The objective of this conceptual work was to analyze trends in water management service providers around the world. The methodology was based on works published in journals and online. There has been a trend towards privatization. However, many cities have chosen to go in the opposite direction by municipalizing their water supply and sanitation services.

An Innovative Preventive and Rehabilitative Model for Acute Care: The Independence Model.

The Independence Model (TIM) is a new rehabilitative model of care implemented in an acute care hospital to address patients' functional decline and a high vacancy rate for rehabilitation therapists. TIM was developed by a team with expertise in evidence, scope of practice and roles, population care needs, and current state related to rehabilitation. TIM utilizes rehabilitation assistants, supervised by physical therapists, occupational therapists or speech-language pathologists, to assist patients in functional areas such as ambulation, activities of daily living (ADLs), cognition and communication. The planning team ensured patient engagement, utilized change management principles, and evaluated the effectiveness of care. Preliminary evaluation of TIM was positive, with staff reporting improved caseload quality and patients feeling more prepared for discharge. This study suggests innovative models of care, such as TIM, can help address the functional needs of patients while navigating the global health human resource crisis.

Effects of Bacillus subtilis on cotton physiology and growth under water and salt stress

The scarcity of fresh water resources has severely limited agricultural production in arid areas. Although brackish water irrigation or fresh water deficit irrigation can alleviate the water resources crisis, both may cause water and salt stress to crop. Therefore, this study is based on the functional advantages of Bacillus subtilis in soil improvement and crop growth promotion to alleviate water and salt stress and build safe and efficient water-saving irrigation patterns. In this study, cotton (No. 50 Chuangmian) was selected as the research crop, and five application rates of Bacillus subtilis (0, 22.5, 45, 67.5 and 90 kg·ha−1) were combined with three irrigation patterns (brackish water, fresh water and fresh water deficit irrigations) to study the effects of Bacillus subtilis on soil moisture and salinity, soil microbial community, cotton physiology and growth under water and salt stress. The results showed that Bacillus subtilis could enhance soil water retention capacity, promote soil desalination, improve cotton growth indices (plant height, stem diameter, leaf area index, dry matter accumulation), and then increase yield and water use efficiency (WUE). Compared with the control treatment, the yield and WUE of Bacillus subtilis application treatments increased by 3.32–54.67 % and 1.68–41.07 %, respectively. In the cotton physiology characteristics, Bacillus subtilis increased proline content and the activity of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase while decreased malondialdehyde content in cotton leaves. Bacillus subtilis could enhance the relative abundance of bacteria with the functions of nitrogen fixation, stress resistance and biocontrol. A structural equation model proved that Bacillus subtilis could improve yield and WUE indirectly by directly improving soil microbial diversity, alleviating water and salt stress, and then improving cotton physiology and growth. According to a comprehensive evaluation of cotton physiology and growth, it was determined that the optimal improvement effect was achieved when the application rate of Bacillus subtilis was 45 kg ha−1; the synergistic effect of brackish water irrigation and Bacillus subtilis (45 kg·ha−1) was superior to that of fresh water deficit irrigation combining with Bacillus subtilis (45 kg·ha−1), which could be considered a priority strategy for alleviating the fresh water crisis in arid areas and promoting the efficient increase in cotton yield.
