Sustainable Development Goals and wellbeing for resilient societies: shocks and recovery

AbstractThe ‘decade of action’ intended to accomplish the ambitious 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) faces notable challenges. Our investigation into the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on SDG progress reveals important lessons for shaping effective policy interventions to ensure resilient societies and overall well-being. Through systematic mapping and a rapid review approach, our analysis reveals that nearly 90% of the SDGs, specifically 144 targets, were adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, there is a glimmer of opportunity: 66 targets stand to gain from the crisis-induced transformations, provided that the right choices are made. Achieving this goal demands a comprehensive approach and decisive leadership to steer an inclusive economic recovery that also safeguards the environment while safeguarding the environment. The intricate interplay between the ongoing planetary and post-COVID-19 crises, environmental challenges, and conflicts underscores the need for a proactive, deliberate and well-informed approach, marked by collaborative decision-making, which is imperative for effectively steering the ‘decade of action’ toward achieving the SDGs. These complex challenges demand collective, decisive action, all with the overarching aim of securing a just and sustainable future for all.

Community engagement in rural and urban marginalized communities in Jamaica: Building community resilience in crisis

ABSTRACT In the Caribbean, Jamaica mobilized strategies to ensure that the most vulnerable were protected against the threats and fears of COVID-19 and other crises over time. One strategy involved wide-scale collaboration with public and private sectors, non-governmental and community-based organizations, and volunteers. This study describes the approach taken by stakeholders in response to the needs of vulnerable residents in marginalized communities, and to highlight the experiences building community resilience during COVID-19. Three questions guided the research: 1) What major issues that affected the community during the COVID-19 crisis? 2) What measures have been implemented to help communities manage and adapt coping mechanism during this crisis? and 3) How has the community shown resilience and recovery in mitigating crises? A descriptive research design was employed comprising focus groups and interviews. We sampled 28 participants from 7 non-governmental organizations and 12 communities in rural and urban Jamaica. The analysis generated policy recommendations.

Risk Factors of the Severity of COVID-19 Infection in Infants

Background: The global COVID-19 crisis has profoundly affected populations worldwide. While it is widely accepted that older individuals are at greater risk of severe illness, data indicate that in newborns and infants, the disease is generally not fatal. Objectives: This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the roles of laboratory tests and clinical symptoms in determining the severity of COVID-19 infection in infants younger than three months. Methods: This study included all infants less than three months old with positive PCR tests for COVID-19 admitted to the Children's Medical Center between October 2020 and March 2022. We analyzed the association between disease severity and clinical symptoms, as well as laboratory findings. Results: Sixty-four neonates and infants under three months of age with COVID-19 participated in the study. Our findings suggest that lower birth weight and gestational age are associated with increased disease severity. Infants with underlying medical conditions were found to have a higher risk of reaching stage IIb or greater severity. Among laboratory and clinical findings, only white blood cell (WBC) count and cough symptoms showed a significant correlation with disease severity. Conclusions: Clinical evaluations, along with factors such as birth weight, gestational age, and underlying conditions, appear more effective in guiding decision-making for COVID-19 severity in infants. Further studies are necessary to explore the influence of these factors on COVID-19 severity in this age group.

CRISPR–Cas Systems Associated with Electrolyte-Gated Graphene-Based Transistors: How They Work and How to Combine Them

In this review, recent advances in the combination of CRISPR–Cas systems with graphene-based electrolyte-gated transistors are discussed in detail. In the first part, the functioning of CRISPR–Cas systems is briefly explained, as well as the most common ways to convert their molecular activity into measurable signals. Other than optical means, conventional electrochemical transducers are also developed. However, it seems that the incorporation of CRISPR/Cas systems into transistor devices could be extremely powerful, as the former provides molecular amplification, while the latter provides electrical amplification; combined, the two could help to advance in terms of sensitivity and compete with conventional PCR assays. Today, organic transistors suffer from poor stability in biological media, whereas graphene materials perform better by being extremely sensitive to their chemical environment and being stable. The need for fast and inexpensive sensors to detect viral RNA arose on the occasion of the COVID-19 crisis, but many other RNA viruses are of interest, such as dengue, hepatitis C, hepatitis E, West Nile fever, Ebola, and polio, for which detection means are needed.

Scale-specific effects of urban landscape pattern on the COVID-19 epidemic in Hangzhou, China

ContextUnderstanding the scale-specific effects of different landscape variables on the COVID-19 epidemics is critical for developing the precise and effective prevention and control strategies within urban areas.ObjectiveBased on the landscape epidemiology framework, we analyzed the scale-specific effects of urban landscape pattern on COVID-19 epidemics in Hangzhou, China.MethodsWe collected COVID-19 cases in Hangzhou from 2020‒2022 and combined the datasets of land use and land cover (LULC) and social gathering point (SGP) to quantify the urban landscape pattern. Optimal general linear model with stepwise regression was applied to explore the dominant landscape factors driving the COVID-19 transmission in the city. Furthermore, multi-scale geographically weighted regression illustrated the spatial heterogeneity and scale specificity of these landscape variables’ effects to COVID-19 epidemic.ResultsEight landscape variables of LULC and SGP patterns were identified which explained 68.5% of the variance in spatial risk of COVID-19. Different optimal bandwidths across these variables in MGWR indicated their scale-specific effects. LSI of green space enhanced the spatial risk across the entire region. The effects of landscape contagion, the number of water bodies, LSI of cropland and built-up areas, and the density of commercial houses were detected to vary between urban and suburban areas. The effects of LSI of water bodies and the density of shopping malls were found to vary among different districts.ConclusionsIn this study, we firstly discriminated the scale-specific effects of different landscape variables on the COVID-19 epidemic in the urban region. These findings can help to optimize the differentiated zoning prevention and control strategies for COVID-19 in cities and guide policy-making and urban planning at a multi-scale hierarchical perspective to improve public health and urban sustainability.

Surgical Challenges During the COVID-19 Crisis: A Comparative Study of Inguinal Hernia Treatment in Romania

Background and Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted healthcare systems worldwide, leading to the postponement of elective surgeries, including inguinal hernia repair (IHR), as healthcare resources prioritized critical care. This study aims to evaluate the impact of the pandemic on the incidence and outcomes of IHR procedures. Materials and Methods: A retrospective review was conducted on 604 patients who underwent IHR over six years, spanning pre-pandemic, pandemic, and post-pandemic periods. Data on patient demographics, type of surgical procedure (elective or emergency), use of mesh, surgical duration, hospitalization period, and postoperative outcomes were analyzed across the three time frames. Results: Patient age remained consistent across the three periods, but a significant increase in female patients was observed during and after the pandemic (p < 0.001). Elective IHR surgeries significantly decreased during the pandemic (p < 0.001), paralleled by an increase in emergency cases (p = 0.004). In the post-pandemic period, elective surgeries rebounded, while emergency interventions declined (21.9% vs. 10.3%). Mesh repair usage increased notably in the post-pandemic phase (p < 0.001). Although surgeries took longer during the pandemic (p < 0.001), both total and postoperative hospital stays were reduced during and after the pandemic (p < 0.001). Minimal postoperative complications were reported throughout, with only one mortality during the pandemic. Conclusions: This study highlights the need for robust healthcare strategies to maintain elective surgical care during global crises, as delays in IHR may elevate risks for complications like hernia incarceration and strangulation.

THE INFLUENCE OF GREEN BANKING IMPLEMENTATION, ISLAMIC SOCIAL REPORTING AND COVID-19 CRISIS ON PROFITABILITY WITH BANK SIZE AS A MODERATING VARIABLE IN ISLAMIC GENERAL BANK PERIOD 2016-2023

This study uses bank size as a moderating variable to examine the effects of the Covid-19 crisis, Islamic social reporting, and the deployment of green banking on profitability in Indonesian Islamic commercial banks. In this work, panel data regression and moderated regression analysis are used as data analysis methods. Eleven Indonesian Islamic commercial banks that were registered with the OJK between 2016 and 2023 used as the study's sample. The study's findings show that Islamic commercial banks' profitability is significantly and favorably impacted by ISR. Profitability (ROE) is significantly impacted negatively by the Covid-19 situation, but not ROA. In the meantime, Islamic commercial banks' profitability is unaffected by green banking. The association between green banking and profitability may be moderated by the moderating variable of bank size. This research highlights how crucial risk management, responsibility, and openness are in a period of unpredictable economic times. In the context of Islamic banking, the impact of ISR procedures and reactions to financial crises like COVID-19 is quite significant. Islamic banks should see an improvement in their financial performance in the future by strengthening their ISR management and comprehending the implications of green banking.

Navigating wicked problems: the unrecognised contribution of social pedagogy to Aotearoa New Zealand’s successful Covid-19 response

Aotearoa New Zealand’s government, alongside its Indigenous Māori and Pacific communities, spearheaded a unique and effective response to the first three years of the Covid-19 crisis that swept the world. The measures taken enabled the country to largely keep its society within its borders open and functional, minimise the impact of the pandemic on individual lives and community well-being and keep morbidity rates low. While there have been numerous studies and articles exploring this national response, to this point no examination has been undertaken through a social pedagogical lens. This article identifies key concepts from the discipline that are relevant to Aotearoa New Zealand’s context, discusses the ways in which these were (albeit unknowingly) applied during the peak of the pandemic and explores future potential for application in social and public health policy and practice. Weaving together a shared framework of Māori, Pacific and unique Aotearoa New Zealand world views and cultural practices alongside the principles of social pedagogy presents an exciting opportunity to shape a national crisis response that is effective and meets the needs of diverse communities. It is argued that making the contribution of social pedagogy visible has the potential to enhance responses to wicked problems in times of crisis and further the acceptance of the discipline in the southern hemisphere.

The Financial Inclusion Question in Zimbabwe’s Post-COVID -19, New Normal: Implications for Adoption of Financial Technology (FinTech) on Service Providers

Financial inclusion will be accelerated by the technological opportunities for online financial transactions brought forth by the COVID-19 outbreak. As a result, because there were fewer digital financial transactions, the threats to COVID-19 that were present previously are now more substantial. The aim of this article is to assess the dangers, challenges, and opportunities for financial inclusion brought forth by the use of technology by COVID-19. According to the article, the inherent characteristics of financial technology (FinTech) in connection to financial inclusion allow it to reduce the negative economic and social effects of the ongoing COVID-19 situation. Under COVID-19, the introduction of digital financial transactions has sped up corporate operations and cut expense on doing business. As a result, women now have greater access to transactions involving financial technology (FinTech). The growth of digital financial transactions has made contactless and cashless purchases possible throughout the COVID-19 crisis. The expansion of digital financial inclusion makes it easier to swiftly and effectively implement public assistance programs, such as those for epidemic-affected women. Financial inclusion is being boosted by digital finance, which may eventually replace or improve traditional banking institutions. Working from home has undergone a "revolution" in a number of industries during COVID-19, including banking. Businesses should identify the optimal operating model mix for the future and make sure they have the infrastructure to support widespread, mass flexible working. This calls for reevaluating the function and application of corporate real estate. Since the labor force is likely to become more automated at the same time, resilience is essential. Conceptual Framework of this study is based on the financial inclusion and FinTech concepts which are the main variables guiding the study and it is underpinned by the theories of diffusion of innovation and the Financial Intermediation.

Dynamic speculation and efficiency in European natural gas markets during the COVID-19 and Russia-Ukraine crises

Efficiency and dynamic speculation literature focused on financial and crude oil markets whereas empirical studies on natural gas markets are limited. This study examines market efficiency and dynamic speculation in major European natural gas hubs (the Zeebrugge (ZEE) hub of Belgium, Title Transfer Facility (TTF) hub of the Netherlands, and National Balancing Point (NBP) hub of the UK) during the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia-Ukraine conflict. Using the Asymmetric multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (A-MFDFA) and the power law exponent (PLE) approach, we show that European natural gas markets exhibit an asymmetric multifractal behavior and long-memory effects, with variations observed during crises. The ZEE hub in Belgium and the NBP hub in the UK demonstrate a higher multifractality under different trends during the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, respectively. Notably, the TTF hub in the Netherlands emerges as the most efficient market during all subperiods. Moreover, our results, using the PLE approach, suggest that European gas market inefficiencies during crises can be attributed to speculative strategies that create self-perpetuating dynamics and diminish market transparency, leading to heightened risk and volatility in gas prices. Our findings underscore the need for regulatory intervention to mitigate excessive speculation and enhance transparency in gas markets. Diversifying gas supplies and fortifying European gas hubs emerge as pivotal strategies to bolster resilience and stability during crises.

Analytical solution of the Sommerfeld–Page equation

The Sommerfeld–Page equation describes the non-relativistic dynamics of a classical electron modeled by a sphere of finite size with a uniform surface charge density. It is a delay differential equation, and almost no exact solution of this equation was known until recently. However, progress has been made, and an analytical solution was recently found for an almost identical delay differential equation, which arose in the context of the mathematical modeling of the COVID-19 epidemics. Inspired by this research, we offer a pedagogical exposition of how one can find an analytical solution of the Sommerfeld–Page equation.

Estimation Methods of Reproduction Numbers for Epidemics of Varying Strains of COVID-19

The estimation methods of reproduction numbers and serial intervals are important in the early stages of infectious diseases. During the COVID pandemic, China implemented a dynamic zero-COVID policy on the Chinese mainland until the end of 2022. This study compares three estimation methods of reproduction numbers on small-scale, short-duration COVID-19 epidemics in Fujian province. Basic reproduction numbers were investigated using a varying-strain model via a next-generation matrix method. Serial intervals were derived using the infector–infectee pairs of two epidemics from the Fujian Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Basic reproduction numbers were estimated using maximum likelihood estimation and an exponential growth method. The curves of the effective reproduction numbers of the three epidemics were plotted by utilizing daily cases and the EpiEstim R package. The spatial heterogeneity of infection cases was described using the Gini coefficient. This study provides significant insights on the estimation methods of reproduction numbers for policymakers in the local government. The results reveal that social contacts between infectors and susceptible individuals should be reduced to avoid an increase in deaths and to fight against the spread of infectious diseases.

Oil price shocks and bond risk premia: Evidence from a Panel of 15 Countries

We study the effect of oil price shocks on bond risk premia. Based on Baumeister and Hamilton (2019), we identify the different sources of oil price shocks using a structural vector autoregressive (SVAR) model of the global market for crude oil. These structural factors are then used as unspanned factors in an affine term structure model based on the representation of Joslin et al. (2014). This is done for a total of 15 countries. Unspanned factors are responsible for most of the variability in bond risk premia for short holding periods, while spanned factors dominate the variance decomposition for longer holding periods. In both cases, global oil supply and global economic activity are clearly the most important unspanned shocks. A historical decomposition around the outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis shows the clear influence of global economic activity shocks during the months of February and March 2020, increasing bond risk premia significantly.

Profiles Based on Support Relationships and the Role of Resources in Compliance to Precautions: Lessons from the COVID-19 Crisis

Despite the crucial role that social support relationships play in coping with crises, there is limited knowledge on how social capital-based resources function in compliance with measures during the COVID-19 crisis, given the complex effects created by the conditions of the support relationship. Synthesizing the capital perspective with the protection motivation approach, this study addresses the negative and positive capital effects in the capital-preventive behavior relationship by examining the role of individual and social resource-based factors in the adaptation of profiles based on support relationships. Results revealed five profiles based on social support relationship conditions. In particular, low compliance commitment was seen in the family-intensive profile, where the support relationship was reciprocal and characterized by strong family ties, similar to the profile without a support relationship. The fact that factors based on social resources are common risk factors in profiles with support relationships with more groups implies that these groups may be more open to social capital effects. The results emphasize that factors related to individual or social resources should be taken into account according to capital potential in the management of crises that require collective action.

In today's globalized healthcare market, it has become a necessity for healthcare organizations to strive to provide the healthcare services needed by their target audience with modern medical technology and software, regardless of physical space, country and/or geography. In fact, although distance health services and tele-medicine applications are not new applications, they have been increasingly used by healthcare organizations due to the physical transmission feature of the New Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19) or corona pandemic. The aim of this study is to analyze the legal dimension of Distance Health Services (DHS) in a public university hospital, the path to be followed to obtain a “Distance Health Service Activity Permit Certificate”, the characteristics, quantity and qualifications of the human resources to provide health services, the physical structure of the areas to be served and the information technologies, information systems to be used, the ministry audit criteria related to the pricing, invoicing and refund methods of health service fees, and to contribute to the structuring stages of distance health services of similar health institutions.

SOCIO-ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY OF THE TOURISM SECTOR ENTERPRISES IN THE CONTEXT OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC: GLOBAL AND UKRAINIAN DIMENSIONS

In 2020, one of the main negative factors affecting the development of the tourism sector was the COVID-19 pandemic. Complicating the economic situation due to the coronavirus crisis for developing countries and local communities that are disproportionately dependent on tourism threatens the growth of poverty in these countries, not to mention the possibility of developing the tourism industry on a sustainable basis. The article examines the situation in the tourism industry of Ukraine, which has arisen as a result of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, and analyzes the possibilities of recovery and development of the tourism industry based on sustainable tourism. Based on the analysis of statistical data and the study of the level and trends in the development of the tourism business at the global and national levels, the authors proposed practical directions for the recovery of the tourism industry in the context of COVID-19, which will be beneficial not only for Ukraine but for developing countries as well. It is shown that the crisis in the tourism industry, which arose as a result of quarantine restrictions to reduce the spread of the pandemic, has complicated the process of implementing the Sustainable Tourism Concept for countries with low economic performance. It has been proven that the further development of tourism in developing countries based on cooperation and consistency of measures is needed to regulate travel at the bilateral, regional and international levels, to ensure safety for travellers and workers. Bringing together the government, the public, and the business community to work on a practical and implementable plan to revive the tourism sector. Increasing investment in technology, green infrastructure and jobs.

Data on selfـــefficacy and its sources during the COVID-19 crisis: A Saudi auditor's perspective.

Auditors during COVID-19 experienced an unprecedented situation, in which normal audit activities were difficult to conduct. Moreover, COVID-19 forced auditors to introduce a new audit approach, "remote auditing," which was not common in most audit firms and required the adoption of more advanced technologies. Overall, auditors during the COVID-19 pandemic needed both cognitive and technical factors to deliver high-quality audits. Despite these challenges, research on how auditors deal with these issues is limited, presenting an intriguing area of study. This dataset provides insights into Saudi auditors' experience and beliefs regarding audit activities during COVID-19. Through an online survey, researchers collected data from 193 of 417 registered auditors with the Saudi Organization for Chartered and Professional Accountants (SOCPA). The survey assessed auditors' self-efficacy in conducting audits during the pandemic and explored its sources and potential moderating factors. Specifically, the dataset includes responses to eight items related to self-efficacy, 19 items covering four common sources of self-efficacy (mastery experience, vicarious experience, social persuasion, and physiological/emotional states), and six items assessing virtual audit competency. Additionally, the dataset contains demographic information that is valuable for researchers analyzing the relationship between auditor self-efficacy, its sources, and other influencing factors. Overall, the dataset included in this study may serve a broader audience and be useful in improving several stakeholders' understanding of the effects of COVID-19 on auditors and how auditors assess their ability to adapt to COVID-19 consequences. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by highlighting the need for auditors to adapt to new circumstances and adopt innovative approaches during challenging times, thereby ensuring the delivery of high-quality audits.
