The lived experience of class cleansing: reshaping sense of place in a gentrified neighbourhood

ABSTRACT Gentrification is a capitalist urban transformation process whereby working-class residents are progressively replaced by wealthier ones, affecting the people-place bonds of those who manage to stay. In a process known as class cleansing, new cultural codes reshape the urban landscape redefining class identities. Drawing on this argument, we explore everyday class experiences in the gentrified neighbourhood of El Poblenou (Barcelona) conducting a reflexive thematic analysis attuned to discursive dynamics through 22 walking interviews. We develop three themes. The first theme examines the relation between class identities and the neighbourhood’s economic model. The second addresses commercial displacement. The third investigates the (re)creation of iconic spaces. Results reveal participants’ diverse and ambivalent experiences of place, catalysed by the blurring of El Poblenou’s working-class identity, and how residents manage their sense of place. We offer a critical social-psychological approach to examining the spatial arrangement of everyday socioeconomic inequalities.

The Impact of Creative Contexts: An Application Cases Review

The article delves into the multifaceted nature of creativity, moving beyond traditional associations of creativity with artistic or cultural disciplines. Instead, it presents creativity as a complex cognitive process essential for addressing multidisciplinary challenges. Drawing from various studies, it emphasises how creativity flourishes in sociocultural contexts and is shaped by both individual learning and group dynamics, such as those described by Florida’s concept of the Creative Class. The dissertation’s core focuses on exploring various creative contexts and environments that nurture creativity. The methodology considers a Systemic Innovation Design perspective to analyse thirty application cases of creative spaces, identifying key characteristics and impacts. The results show a clear direction of creative contexts involving multidisciplinary and practice-based actions, with a predominant focus on social and applied sciences.

Los círculos restaurativos en la educación secundaria: una revisión sistemática

The study presents a systematic review of restorative circles in secondary education, addressing the novelty of this practice and the paucity of research in this field. Restorative practice seeks to resolve conflicts in a non-punitive manner, promoting community building and healthy relationships between actors. The objectives of this review are to identify and analyse studies that expose the implementation of restorative circles in secondary schools, to know their benefits and to propose elements of improvement for their study. The methodology for the systematic review is based on the PRISMA recommendations. The study identifies fifteen research studies that explore the application of restorative circles. The results show benefits for students, including the creation of safe spaces, the fostering of positive relationships and the development of communication and emotional skills. In addition, benefits are noted for other stakeholders such as teachers, educational institutions and the wider community. It is concluded that there is a limited amount of research and a lack of consensus on some benefits, highlighting the need for further research and longitudinal studies to deepen the understanding of the impacts of implementing restorative circles in educational settings.

Fingers crossed behind the back: tactics of hidden resistance in Russian wartime academia

AbstractThis study examines the transformation of scholarly activity and academic freedom in Russia under state military censorship and new ideological interventions following the outbreak of the war with Ukraine. Pre-war higher education was characterized by a significant number of restrictions on academic freedom, combined with neoliberal reforms that increased the controllability of universities. The primary goal is to understand how academics navigate high uncertainty, new restrictions on academic freedom, and career threats. Using a theoretical framework based on Scott and de Certeau, the study analyzes localized reactions on external pressure and everyday resistance. Forty in-depth semi-structured interviews with faculty from Russian universities, conducted between May and September 2022, form the basis of this research. The interviewees represented diverse backgrounds, career stages, disciplines, and locations, both within and outside of Russia. The findings reveal a range of tactics, including normalization, adapting research portfolios, finding common ground, avoidance, bootlegging, window dressing, creating safe spaces, and exit. Two general conclusions emerge: tactics focus primarily on protecting teaching over research, and exit power is crucial to everyday resistance. Negotiating exit power facilitated the creation of safe spaces within universities that offered greater academic freedom, while leaving the university became a prominent form of protest.

Visualizing Temporal Topic Embeddings with a Compass.

Dynamic topic modeling is useful at discovering the development and change in latent topics over time. However, present methodology relies on algorithms that separate document and word representations. This prevents the creation of a meaningful embedding space where changes in word usage and documents can be directly analyzed in a temporal context. This paper proposes an expansion of the compass-aligned temporal Word2Vec methodology into dynamic topic modeling. Such a method allows for the direct comparison of word and document embeddings across time in dynamic topics. This enables the creation of visualizations that incorporate temporal word embeddings within the context of documents into topic visualizations. In experiments against the current state-of-the-art, our proposed method demonstrates overall competitive performance in topic relevancy and diversity across temporal datasets of varying size. Simultaneously, it provides insightful visualizations focused on temporal word embeddings while maintaining the insights provided by global topic evolution, advancing our understanding of how topics evolve over time.

BUILDING BRIDGES TOWARD WORKFORCE DIVERSITY: STRATEGIES TO SUPPORT RESILIENT LEARNERS

Abstract The Building Bridges national virtual conference, held in March 2021, aimed to provide opportunities for psychologists to discuss the dramatic geropsychological workforce shortage, identify means to address this shortage, and discover opportunities and challenges in ongoing efforts to diversify this workforce moving forward. Fifty-six individuals at all stages of training completed a pre-conference survey about workforce diversification and identified advertising and outreach (12.6%), student and faculty recruitment (11.5%), and culturally aware mentorship (10.3%) as strategies for recruiting diverse individuals into geropsychology. Four active workgroups identified enhancing diversity awareness and cultural humility as the most important target areas for change. Qualitative memos from these workgroups were analyzed by a two-member coding team working with an expert in qualitative analyses. Across workgroups, eight emergent themes included: 1) need for financial support, 2) recruitment efforts for diverse students and faculty, 3) intentional awareness emphasizing strength in diversity, 4) creation of inclusive environments, 5) creation of safe spaces for honest and proactive dialog, 6) creation of intersectional and intergenerational learning opportunities, 7) outreach and networking opportunities, and 8) didactic and experiential training. The prioritization of these themes varied by workgroup, with the academia workgroup prioritizing intentional awareness and creation of safe learning environments and the post-licensure clinical workgroup prioritizing recruitment of diverse learners and faculty as well as networking. Strategies for implementing changes to practice that support resilient and diverse learners at all stages of training will be discussed.

К ОСМЫСЛЕНИЮ ФЕНОМЕНА АРТ-РЕЗИДЕНЦИЙ. ОБЗОР ИССЛЕДОВАНИЙ

The problems of socio-cultural institutions and conglomerates, such as, in this case, art residences, from the author's point of view, have not been fully investigated and are only beginning to arouse scientific interest. In the context of the Russian creative space, this phenomenon is becoming increasingly popular as a program to support cultural and artistic figures. In this article, and this, in our opinion, is the novelty of the research, the most accurate definition of the phenomenon of art residences, from the author's point of view, is considered and confirmed. Examples of prototypes of art residences in the context of the history of Russia and other countries are given. The research of art residencies in the Russian scientific space is also analyzed. The differences between the publications of independent researchers and specialists belonging to scientific institutions are considered. The transformations of this socio-cultural phenomenon in a temporal context are actualized. For example, the introduction of creative culture products into the field of activity of art residences and the active use of the latest technologies. Based on the studied materials and observations, an author's addition to the classification of art residences is proposed, which actualizes the research work. As a conclusion, the authors come to the conclusion that the phenomenon of art residences is subject to certain transformations due to a number of factors, as well as the influence on socio-cultural formations connected with it, like any working open system.

Listening to the Wind of Change: Social Forecasting through the Lens of a Transdisciplinary Approach

Purpose. This paper aims to explore social forecasting through the lens of a transdisciplinary approach with respect to holistic human nature. Theoretical basis. The complexity of social forecasting is that it deals with the multifaceted phenomenon of a human being, a human who is both the creator and the creation of the social spaces, for whom all economic, social, political, scientific, cultural achievements, problems and prospects acquire meaning only in the context of him/herself, his/her life, his/her destiny. Thus, the phenomenon of a human being is the key to understanding the dynamics of modern transformational processes and to creating promising models of the future development of the human society. Since in forecasting we try to anticipate the future that is not yet defined and may have different development trajectories, a transdisciplinary approach to forecasting that embraces what is within disciplines, at the intersection of disciplines, and beyond all disciplines can become the most fruitful approach. Originality. A human being brings a high degree of unpredictability and uncertainty into all social forecasts. Nowadays, the complex multifaceted nature of an individual as a biological, psychological, and social being needs a deeper understanding that requires joint efforts of representatives of various scientific fields. Through mutually enriching work within a transdisciplinary paradigm, representatives of different scientific fields and directions may create a kind of guidebook designed to form and explain a new reality, a new future. Within such an approach, not a competition between theories, methodologies, and protocol decisions, but a common goal, common dreams and aspirations for a better future of humanity should come to the fore. Conclusions. A transdisciplinary approach to social forecasting has a potential to consider all sciences in a humanitarian context, taking into account complex multifaceted human nature. It goes beyond traditional boundaries providing opportunities not only to synthesize and integrate solutions to a problem, but also to rise above it. Transdisciplinarity, recognizing the existence of different realities, provides a broader view of the world, a deeper understanding of phenomena and processes that contribute to the development of new projects for a better future of a human and humanity.

Experience of Implementing Assistive Technologies in Ukrainian and Foreign Document and Information Structures

Objective. The article examines the global experience of digital inclusion and the state of the creation of information spaces for people with special needs in leading document and information institutions of society. Methods. The research was conducted based on content analysis of 20 sites of US academic libraries and webometric analysis of 41 sites of Ukrainian document and information structures (libraries, archives, and museums) using the "Web Accessibility Checker" functionality. Monitoring of library sites was carried out during May 2024. Results. The conducted analysis proved that today digital inclusion in document and information institutions of libraries in the USA, Great Britain, and France is aimed at overcoming the lack of information resources for different groups of users, introducing computers with special software and assistive technologies for people with disabilities, and creating comfortable information space. This activity is only a desirable prospect for Ukraine's libraries, although work in this direction is unfolding. Conclusions. A conclusion was made regarding the importance of implementing assistive technologies in document and information structures and ensuring comfortable access to information for various categories of users, including those with special educational needs and people with disabilities. The development of digital inclusion and the creation of specialized products and services for special users is a strategic direction of the development of document and information institutions. Libraries are leaders in implementing and using assistive technologies among various document and information institutions. Compared to museums and archives, they have the greatest experience in serving users with disabilities and the most powerful potential for developing social inclusion and embodying diversity in the digital environment.

Artificial Intelligence in Academic Libraries: Foreign and Ukrainian Experience

The objective is to determine the direction of implementing artificial intelligence (AI) in the activities of foreign and domestic academic libraries. Methods. The research is based on a combination of the method of analyzing the content of publications with the methods of systematization, generalization, surveying employees of academic libraries in Ukraine, and the method of comparative analysis. Results. It was found that the general directions for practical application of AI technologies in academic libraries of foreign and Ukrainian countries are: training, reference work, intelligent user service, and collection management. The main direction of the ChatGPT application is: to study this tool, and its application in reference and advertising activities. It was established that in libraries of foreign universities, the following are being initiated: the creation of intellectual spaces (USA); the use of robotics (Canada, China); and the formation of a smart library (USA, China). Conclusions. The importance of implementing AI technologies in the activities of academic libraries, which create new opportunities for scientific research and education, is confirmed. At the same time, the research confirms the insufficient level of AI implementation by university libraries to provide innovative alternative services. It is urgent to develop a strategy for the university library regarding implementing AI technologies and developing employees' relevant competencies.

Of saintly men and wanton girls: the social worker’s adventures in the refugee city

ABSTRACT This paper examines Anis Kidwai’s Partition memoir Azadi ki Chhaon Mein (1974) as a text that offers counterhistories of the mid-twentieth century north-Indian city. The paper focuses on how Kidwai’s complex position as a Muslim woman and a Gandhian social worker yields a creative space from which she writes the city as simultaneously the space for exclusion and resistance. The paper engages with the writings of Liisa Malkki and Manuela Ciotti who create frameworks for thinking of women social workers as adventurers and subjects with political agency. Kidwai’s exploration of Delhi takes the form of a journey of self-discovery. Her encounters with displaced women who occupy urban and social space with their bodies and needs become moments of solidarity between the social worker and her subject, between the host and the refugee, and between homely and unhomely women. They unsettle these oppositional categories central to the relations of colonial modernity in the north-Indian city. Moreover, in disengaging women’s bodies from sexuality, domesticity and victimhood they challenge masculinist narratives of the nation foundational to the violence committed against women during Partition. Instead, in foregrounding diverse women’s collaborative contest and appropriation of urban public space, they reinstate women as citizens.

КУЛЬТУРНО-МИСТЕЦЬКИЙ ПРОСТІР ВІННИЧЧИНИ: НОВІ ФОРМАТИ ВЗАЄМОДІЇ З АУДИТОРІЄЮ В РЕАЛІЯХ ВОЄННОГО СТАНУ

The article, based on theoretical research, analyzes the current situation and directions of the development of culture and art of Vinnytsia region in the realities of martial law. The specificity of the war in Ukraine as a phenomenon that occurs not only in the physical, but also in the cultural and artistic space is determined. It is noted that the cultural and artistic space is an effective tool in the war, because the ability to influence the audience, inspire Victory, and help to feel complicity in historical events is integrated into the music, song, and theatrical art itself. The article reveals the powerful ideological potential of the cultural and artistic space of Vinnytsia, which is realized through an artistic and emotional form. It is emphasized that a de-Russification took place on the territory of the cultural and artistic space of Vinnytsia, which affected the language of performance and the ideological content of concert programs, creative events, and theatrical productions. Instead of Russian content, artists promote national art, perform works of Ukrainian classics and modern composers, promote modern Ukrainian poetry. One of the positive results of such activity can be considered the distancing of the Vinnytsia community from the Russian cultural space, the growth of interest in Ukrainian-language content in general. In this context, the main areas of activity of the leading regional centers of culture and arts, creative collectives and institutions of Vinnytsia Region, which work under martial law conditions, were investigated, in particular: the Vinnytsia Regional Philharmonic named after M. D. Leontovych, the Vinnytsia Academic Music and Drama Theater named after Mykola Sadovskyi, the Vinnytsia Regional Academic Puppet Theater, the «Pirogov Sky» open-air cultural and artistic space, the «Shchedryk» creative space, the «Kvadrat» youth center, and the prospects for their further development are outlined. The theoretical research gave grounds for the conclusion that the cultural and artistic space of Vinnytsia in the realities of war is actively introducing new forms of interaction with the audience. It has become not only an entertainment, but also an educational and intellectual-educational environment that effectively influences society by promoting national art. Being an effective means of communication, the cultural and artistic space of the region also unites people, creates positive emotions in them, and returns Ukrainians to normal life in the new military reality.

Urban Spaces that Promote Reduction of Body Mass Index of Residents

In modern society, the issue of excess weight is becoming increasingly important. The growing number of people suffering from obesity is a growing concern among specialists as well as among the general population. Therefore, closer attention is paid to various approaches and measures aimed at increasing the level of physical activity, thereby preventing overweight and obesity. It can be assumed that urban infrastructure and transportation play a significant role in this process, and since environmental factors are largely modifiable, they seem to be promising means for solving the problem.This study aimed to analyze scientific data related to urban space planning on obesity incidence and to identify key recommendations for environmental planning that promotes obesity management.An analysis of international practices showed that effective urban design —such as transitioning from sprawling cities to more compact communities—can enhance physical activity levels and reduce air and noise pollution, potentially leading to lover obesity rates among city residents. Such methods of urban infrastructure management as sustainable transportation (shifting from car to public and active transport), improvement of walking areas, creation of green spaces and water spaces, traffic safety and availability of healthy food could encourage healthier lifestyle and significantly reduce obesity prevalence. An important aspect of this planning is the involvement of specialists of various profiles, as well as participation of citizens in the project development phase.

HETEROCHRONY OF GAUDI'S ARCHITECTURE

Today in the scientific literature there are active discussions about the architectural style of the Sagrada Familia Cathedral. Gaudi’s architecture is often referred to as organic or bionic. The presence of the bionic style in Gaudi’s architecture is supported by the fact that the Sagrada Familia has complex shapes, which are known today as helicoids, hyperboloids and hyperbolic paraboloids. Gaudi borrows these forms from nature and bases the construction of columns, vaults and other structural elements of the temple. However, the architectural image of the Sagrada Familia was also influenced by Gaudi’s existential experiences, which were the result of many factors. First of all, it is the emotional experiences of childhood. Other important factors in shaping the image of the Sagrada Familia were Catalan modernism, which emerged at the turn of the 19th – 20th centuries in Barcelona, the influence of German Expressionism, the interaction of contemporary Gaudi architects and the influence of Goethe’s philosophy on A. Gaudi. Goethe’s organic worldview, which was based on the understanding of the world as a living monadic whole, revolutionized not only philosophy but also architecture. The fundamental principle of the Sagrada Familia is a kind of proteism, the desire for constant renewal, expressed through both the interior and exterior of the building. The transformation of living integral formations, depicted on the three facades of the Sagrada Familia, demonstrates a series of metamorphoses of pra-phenomenon (Urphanomen – germ. after Goethe) and metamorphosis of the human soul under the influence of Christ’s teachings. Antonio Gaudi’s architecture is special for its emotional content, which hides the author’s emotional conflicts and contradictions. Opposing one to the natural environment and emphasizing harmonious coexistence with it is an oxymoron that the author laid down in the architectural forms of the Sagrada Familia. The Church of the Holy Family can be seen as a symbiosis of advanced technology and creative expression, the skill of presenting the author’s architectural ideas and happy coincidences. The artist's original vision and understanding of the relationship between the anthropogenic and natural environment in the creation of architectural space, the place and role of man in this process determined his exclusively individual architectural style.

Interpretation of Space Syntax in Higher Education: A Study of Functional Efficiency in Architecture Schools in Erbil

Assessing a built environment’s functional performance and physical and psychological impact is essential for understanding its effect on users, particularly in higher education, where it informs the creation of effective learning spaces. This study aims to explore the application of Space Syntax Theory in a higher-educational context and examines the functional efficiency of three architecture schools in Erbil: Salahaddin University-Erbil, Koya University, and Cihan University-Erbil. Using a quantitative research paradigm, the study employs space-syntax methodologies, including axial map analysis and justified graphs, to evaluate key syntactical parameters such as mean depth, relative asymmetry (RA), real relative asymmetry (RRA), real ring-ness (R-value), and the difference factor (H*). The analysis, conducted via Depthmap X software, examines spatial permeability and connectivity within educational layouts, providing insights into their functional performance. The findings indicate that the architecture school at Cihan University-Erbil, characterised by a ring-like spatial structure, achieves a moderate level of functional performance, outperforming Salahaddin University-Erbil and Koya University. Moreover, productive spaces consistently exhibit higher functional performance than supportive spaces across all case studies. This research proposes a framework for optimising spatial configurations in higher education, providing evidence-based strategies to enhance functionality and promote best practices in educational architecture.

Virtuous spaces, virtual places: institutionalizing values on ethical consumerism in the Indian toy industry through field-configuring events

Focusing on India's toy industry, this study investigates how field-configuring events facilitate the institutionalization of ethical consumerism in emerging markets. Through virtual ethnographic analysis of the First India Toy Fair 2021, we examine how digital platforms enable institutional change processes. Drawing on institutional theory, we identify three key mechanisms through which the fair shaped ethical consumption practices: normative space creation, regulatory framework development, and cultural-cognitive meaning making. The fair served as a platform where stakeholders collectively defined ethical practices, negotiated quality standards, and legitimated traditional production methods within contemporary sustainability discourse. Our findings reveal how virtual field-configuring events can transcend geographical boundaries to enable broader participation in institutional change processes, while also highlighting the complex interplay between traditional craft values and modern market demands. The study demonstrates how traditional practices can provide templates for sustainable production while meeting contemporary consumer expectations. These insights contribute to understanding how ethical markets are moralized in emerging economies and how virtual spaces can support the preservation and evolution of traditional craft sectors.

The tariff regulation of railway freight transportation in EU

The article examines the provisions of the EU legislation on the tariff regulation of rail freight transportation, as well as the prospects of their implementation in the domestic system of industry regulation. It is emphasized that the implementation of European rules of tariff regulation on railway transport is an important factor in the development of a competitive environment in the market of transport services, as well as a necessary prerequisite for the attraction of internal and external investments in the development of the railway industry. Such adaptation is extremely important for reducing transport costs, improving the quality of services and the overall efficiency of rail freight transportation. The key provisions of the Directive of the European Parliament and the Council of Europe of 21.11.2012 № 2001/14/EU “Creation of a single European railway space”, which defines the rules for collecting fees for the use of railway infrastructure by freight transport operators, are highlighted. It is emphasized that the Directive envisages the separation of infrastructure management and transport operations to prevent conflicts of interest and stimulate fair competition among market operators. It also defines railway companies’ rights to access infrastructure and establishes transparent pricing mechanisms. The article examines the European experience of creating independent regulatory bodies authorized to monitor market practices, monitor compliance with safety standards, and ensure fair pricing mechanisms. It was concluded that the implementation of the provisions of the EU legislation on the tariff regulation of rail freight transportation will ensure a significant increase in the competitiveness of domestic rail transport by improving the access of national carriers to the European transport infrastructure, optimizing logistics on rail transport, ensuring transparency and reasonableness of pricing, creating equal conditions for national railway operators. The importance of the consistent implementation of the provisions of the EU legislation on the tariff regulation of rail freight transportation in the context of the Europeanization of domestic legislation on rail transport and the regulatory approximation provided for by the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU is emphasized.

What is shared and what is not: How the Cold War era in northeastern Thailand is remembered on social media

This article investigates memories of the Cold War era in Thailand, through online practices on Facebook pages administered by residents of a borderland province in the Northeast that was a key front line during the conflict. The possibilities for greater access to, and dissemination of, information afforded by digital media technologies have created a new environment for the production of shared knowledge about the past. However, on these pages, instead of converging plural memories, participatory online culture and the use of the language of memory have enabled the creation of distinct and separated memory spaces. This article calls attention in particular to what is silenced and absent in what people are sharing online. It argues that the deep-seated ethnic politics of the Cold War have an afterlife in Thai society—especially in the country's ‘margins’ where the conflict was most violent—that is reflected as much by what is not said as by what is said online.

A Post-Evaluation Study on the Renewal of Public Space in Qianmen Street of Beijing’s Central Axis Based on Grounded Theory

Historic districts are an important component of urban heritage, carrying the memory of the city. The study provides objective spatial level and subjective perception level analysis regarding the evaluation of the renewal of historic districts. We selected Qianmen Street, which is located on the central axis of Beijing, as the research subject. Space syntax was used to determine the importance of the main street to the district, and a kernel density analysis revealed that it was a poor tourist attraction. We used online comment data to establish an evaluation system, based on grounded theory, for the renewal of Qianmen Street. The evaluation system consisted of four primary indicators, including space creation, architectural style conservation, locality, and business management, as well as fifteen secondary indicators. Additionally, an importance–performance analysis (IPA) was used to conduct a quadrant analysis on tourist satisfaction evaluation indicators, in order to analyze influencing factors. The results show that tourists are most concerned about the dimensions of locality and business management, but the level of tourist satisfaction is low. The renewal of the Qianmen historic district should give priority to the creation of its historicity, cultural characteristics, and uniqueness, and should use a small-scale, gradual, and sustainable renewal method.

Affective life of Mongolian proverbs in times of COVID-19 lockdown in China

ABSTRACT This study examines how recontextualised Mongolian proverbs during the COVID-19 lockdown reframe and make sense of crisis events as Inner Mongolia enters lockdown and its residents go through daily PCR testing since October 2022. The study finds that reworked well-known Mongolian sayings centring on COVID testing act as a form of sociopolitical commentary, a coping strategy, and a language community-building device. The light-heartedness and delight inherent in the process of recontextualising Mongolian proverbs not only discursively create distance between the difficult time experienced by people and themselves but also generate a space for linguistic creativity as the Mongolian online users experiment with and recontextualise the new Chinese terms hesuan jiance, PCR testing. It also finds that the affect of immuno-apparatus discharged by these reinvented proverbs offers us an important insight into people’s changing responses to pandemic policies during the very last phase of China’s ‘war’ against the virus. The study contributes to our understanding of multilingualism, affect and agency in times of crisis.
