Decorative properties of cultivars of Liquidambar styraciflua L.

Purpose. To determine the structure, and color of the leaf, the bark of the branches, the habit of the crown, the linear characteristics of the plants, the features of flowering and fruiting of Liquidambar styraciflua L. and its cultivars. Provide recommendations for their use in landscaping. Methods. The subjects of the research were cultivars of L. styraciflua, which were found in arboretums, parks, squares, garden centers, nurseries and in green areas throughout Ukraine. The plants were evaluated according to a complex scale of ornamental value of woody plants, which includes four levels of ornamental value of trees and shrubs: very high, high, medium and low. The methods of observation, analysis, comparison, data summarization, photo­fixation and descriptive­taxation method were used. Results. A comprehensive assessment of the decorative effect of L. styraciflua cultivars (‘Worplesdon’, ‘Gum Ball’, ‘Rotundiloba’, ‘Albomarginata Manon’, ‘Oakville Highlight’, ‘Slender Silhouette’, ‘Fastigiatа’, ‘Pasquali’, ‘Stared’, ‘Thea’, ‘Aurea’, ‘Golden Treasure’, ‘Variegata’, ‘Golden Sun’, ‘Stella’, ‘Stella Rossa’) against species plants was carried out. Based on the results of the research, a table was compiled to help landscape architects, nursery and garden center workers, botanists and ecologists, students and staff of forestry and botanical institutions in the selection of plants. Recommendations are given for the use of L. styraciflua cultivars in landscaping. Conclusions. According to the degree of ornamentality, the vast majo­rity of L. styraciflua cultivars (13) belong to group I (very high, 65–90 points). They are recommended for use in urban and domestic landscaping and for the creation of various landscape objects. Group II (high ornamental value, 51–64 points) contains two cultivars, and group III (moderate ornamental value, 41–50 points) contains only one cultivar.

VDefender: An explainable and introspection-based approach for identifying emerging malware behaviour at hypervisor-layer in virtualization environment

Virtualization can be defined as the backbone of cloud computing services, which has gathered significant attention from organizations and users. Due to the increasing number of cyberattacks, virtualization security has become a crucial area of study. In this paper, we propose an explainable and introspection-based malware detection approach called vDefender for fine-grain monitoring of virtual machine (VM) processes at the hypervisor to identify the malicious behaviour of 17 different malware families of Windows exhibiting new evolving behaviour. Initially, it performs a basic security check to detect hidden processes and ensures the presence of security-critical processes. Then, deep memory introspection is performed using a software breakpoints injection approach to intercept the execution of processes. Various process activity logs are captured that include process-related, file manipulation, kernel heap object creation, exception-related activities, etc. Hybrid feature vectors are derived from these logs, which are reconstructed using the proposed mechanism to eliminate the redundant behaviour. The features are then learnt using Random Forest (RF) algorithm to classify distinct malware families. The interpretation and analysis of RF results involve the use of explainability techniques. The proposed approach achieves an accuracy of 95.49%, F1-score of 95.82% with 0.05% false alarms when evaluated using an emerging malware dataset. The contribution includes a comprehensive discussion of results, accompanied by a comparative analysis of current approaches that gives readers insight towards future research directions.

Automated long‐term monitoring of RFID‐tagged individuals reveals high hibernaculum site fidelity in Daubenton's bats and Natterer's bats

AbstractIn the temperate zone, many bat species depend on underground sites during the autumn mating period and as hibernacula in winter. Anthropogenic or natural alteration or destruction of a hibernaculum may severely threaten the bats that rely on the site, especially if they are not aware of suitable alternatives. Currently, the rate at which bats visit other hibernacula, or disperse between them, is poorly understood. Here, we studied hibernation site fidelity in two European bat species, Daubenton's bat (Myotis daubentonii) and Natterer's bat (Myotis nattereri), that share hibernacula but differ in their hibernation phenology and mating systems. The activity of over 2500 RFID‐tagged individuals was monitored using an automated recording system at the entrances of three hibernacula over eight full years. Hibernation site fidelity was high in both species, with only 1.6% of Daubenton's bats and 4.1% of Natterer's bats moving between the monitored sites during their lifetimes. Juvenile bats moved more frequently than adults and contrary to our expectations, in Natterer's bats, more females moved between hibernacula than males. Movements almost always occurred during the autumn mating season, and more frequently between neighboring hibernacula than between distant sites. Finally, we also found that individuals rarely explored more than one of the three entrances to a site, despite their close proximity. Taken together, our results suggest that some juvenile bats may explore multiple sites, but that they rarely disperse to other hibernacula as adults. As a result, most individuals are either not aware of alternative sites or do not regularly update this information. We therefore argue that the creation of new underground objects as a mitigation measure may not function as an immediate compensation for the disturbance or the loss of an existing hibernaculum. Instead, the proactive identification and protection of existing hibernacula should be prioritized.

Comprehensive examination of intellectual property objects: problematic issues in the context of science and technology development

The article is devoted to the study of a number of problematic aspects related tocomprehensive examinations of intellectual property objects in the context of scienceand technology development.It is established that intellectual property objects created with the help of artificial intelligenceare characterized by a complex legal nature. Thus, a particular work may be entirelygenerated by an artificial intelligence system. In this regard, there is a need to appointcomprehensive examinations for their study in the course of consideration of themerits of cases on the protection of intellectual property rights, within which it will be necessaryto apply both knowledge in the field of intellectual property and technical knowledgerelated to the peculiarities of creating these works.The author identifies the need to adapt existing methods to new intellectual propertyobjects, as well as to develop modern research methods taking into account the specifics ofthe legal nature of such objects. Given the complex legal nature of intellectual property objectscreated with the use of artificial intelligence, the author proposes to appoint a comprehensiveexamination with the involvement of technical specialists.It is noted that a comprehensive examination of intellectual property involves a multi-levelstudy, which, however, forms an interdependent logical sequence of activities of individual experts.In this case, the key is the impossibility of establishing the properties of a particular intellectualproperty object without conducting a study by an expert of another specialization.It is noted that when an intellectual property object has a dualistic legal nature, thereis a need to integrate various areas of knowledge in the field of intellectual property. Despitethe fact that this knowledge relates to the field of intellectual property, such a studywill be complex in its procedural nature.It is summarized that various subtypes of intellectual property expertise may require technicalassistance to solve the tasks assigned to the expert, especially in the context of the developmentof digital technologies and their use for the creation of new intellectual property objects.

Toward A Definition of the Prosthetic Condition: Mario Bellatin, Simón Hosie and Other Ways of Inhabiting Contemporaneity

This article surveys recent Latin American artistic practices that privilege the fragment and embrace interdisciplinarity, thereby creating the conditions of possibility for a distinct way of being in contemporaneity. Coupled with the intervention of an active, emancipated reader/spectator, these practices produce objects, beings, communities, and events that alter what is experienced as “real”. To describe this phenomenon, I propose the notion of the prosthetic condition, a non-ontological way of being proper to contemporaneity that affects entities that exist only conceptually, but that have the potential to operate as “real”. By analysing two contemporary works – the creation of the prosthetic object in Mario Bellatin’s Lecciones para una liebre muerta (2004); and the creation of a prosthetic being in Simón Hosie’s la lavandera de Ciudad Bolívar (2008–2009) – I determine three main characteristics of entities affected by the prosthetic condition: they are artificial, come to fill a void, and produce real effects. The article concludes by considering the potential implications and effects of using the prosthetic condition as a tool to approach both contemporary artistic practices and relational ways of being.

Questioning the why and the how: Collective transformative agency of experienced teachers co-designing a justice-oriented high school introductory computing program

We report findings from qualitatively analyzing audio recordings and teacher-generated products from a two-day in-person collaborative design (co-design) workshop where nine experienced high school CS teachers revised parts of an existing introductory high school program toward justice. In response to our research question of how teachers demonstrated agency as co-designers, our analysis revealed that they collaboratively questioned the purpose, the “why,” and the approach, the “how,” and captured ideas in lesson templates and unit descriptions to transform future practice. We discuss co-design with teachers as openings to explore nuances of teachers’ visions for equitable CS education. We highlight the foundational longstanding relationships and politicized trust, and enabling features of the co-design space for equitable participation and joint creation of boundary objects to sustain ideas.

Creating High-quality 3D Content by Bridging the Gap Between Text-to-2D and Text-to-3D Generation

In recent times, automatic text-to-3D content creation has made significant progress, driven by the development of pretrained 2D diffusion models. Existing text-to-3D methods typically optimize the 3D representation to ensure that the rendered image aligns well with the given text, as evaluated by the pretrained 2D diffusion model. Nevertheless, a substantial domain gap exists between 2D images and 3D assets, primarily attributed to variations in camera-related attributes and the exclusive presence of foreground objects. Consequently, employing 2D diffusion models directly for optimizing 3D representations may lead to suboptimal outcomes. To address this issue, we present X-Dreamer, a novel approach for high-quality text-to-3D content creation that effectively bridges the gap between text-to-2D and text-to-3D synthesis. The key components of X-Dreamer are two innovative designs: Camera-Guided Low-Rank Adaptation (CG-LoRA) and Attention-Mask Alignment (AMA) Loss. CG-LoRA dynamically incorporates camera information into the pretrained diffusion models by employing camera-dependent generation for trainable parameters. This integration makes the 2D diffusion model camera-sensitive. AMA loss guides the attention map of the pretrained diffusion model using the binary mask of the 3D object, prioritizing the creation of the foreground object. This module ensures that the model focuses on generating accurate and detailed foreground objects. Extensive evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method compared to existing text-to-3D approaches. Our project webpage: https://anonymous-11111.github.io/ . Regulatory challenges and policy gaps for in-space servicing, assembly, and manufacturing technologies

In-Space Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing (ISAM) technologies provide incredible opportunities to improve space exploration by giving space assets longer lives, enabling the creation of space objects that are too large to launch from Earth, and allowing space technology to be built using materials sourced from other celestial bodies. However, ISAM technologies also pose legal and regulatory challenges. There are some ongoing challenges with satellite regulations that also apply to ISAM technologies, like spectrum allocation and enforcement, and some difficulties that are unique to ISAM, like mission authorization and continuing supervision. This paper explores how ISAM technologies fit within current space policy framework and the current efforts to regulate ISAM. Additionally, it identifies policy gaps and future work to be done to ensure the safe and sustainable use of ISAM technology.

New skills in symbolic data analysis for official statistics

The paper draws attention to the use of Symbolic Data Analysis (SDA) in the field of Official Statistics. It is composed of three sections presenting three pilot techniques in the field of SDA. The three contributions range from a technique based on the notion of exactly unified summaries for the creation of symbolic objects, a model-based approach for interval data as an innovative parametric strategy in this context, and measures of similarity defined between a class and a collection of classes based on the frequency of the categories which characterize them. The paper shows the effectiveness of the proposed approaches as prototypes of numerous techniques developed within the SDA framework and opens to possible further developments.

Green infrastructure as a factor of sustainable urban development: current status and prospects

Abstract The article reflects the results of the assessment of the current state and functioning of the green infrastructure of the urban environment. A thorough survey of the territory and a clear functional zoning were carried out. A study of the features of Landscaping and landscaping of urban forests was conducted and a whole range of issues related to the formation of a full-fledged environment for human recreation was identified. The research has established plants that can withstand high temperature conditions and low humidity, high levels of dust and gases in the air of the urban environment, soil compaction, etc. In the course of research, it was revealed that coniferous plants play a large role in the creation of decorative compositions. For a shaded lawn, special types of herbs are used that can do without direct sunlight. Local creators and artists can be involved in the creation of unusual forest art objects. This will create additional interest in visiting and contribute to the dissemination of information about the city and its attractions on social networks, creating an attractive tourist image. The improvement of the city’s forest area will create opportunities for organizing full-fledged recreation for urban residents, and will have a beneficial effect on their psychological and physical condition. Thus, a sufficient number of well-maintained public spaces have a positive effect on the physical and psycho-emotional health of a city dweller, on the effectiveness of his work.

The Evaluation of the Trueness of Dental Mastercasts Obtained through Different 3D Printing Technologies.

In contemporary dentistry, several 3D printing techniques, including a stereolithography apparatus (SLA), digital light processing (DLP), liquid crystal display (LCD), and PolyJet 3D inkjet printing technology (PolyJet), are employed for model production. Despite their widespread use, there remains a paucity of the literature regarding the trueness and precision of these devices in dental applications. Existing studies comparing the accuracy of dental models manufactured by different printing technologies yield disparate conclusions regarding dental prosthesis manufacturing. This study aimed to test two null hypotheses: first, that the trueness of various new-generation 3D printers is equivalent, and second, that the trueness of printing by these printers is sufficient for achieving high-precision mastercasts in dental prosthodontics manufacturing. The research focuses on evaluating the trueness of five contemporary dental 3D printers: Anycubic Mono X 6Ks (Hongkong Anycubic Technology Co., Hongkong, China), Asiga Max (Asiga, Sydney, Australia), Creo C5 (Planmeca Oy, Helsinki, Finland), Form 3B (Formlabs, Boston, MA, USA), and J5 Dentajet (Stratasys Ltd., Eden Prairie, MN, USA). The methodology employed involved the creation of a digital test object using Blender software, adhering meticulously to the dimensions outlined in ISO standard 20896-1. These dimensions were chosen to be both relevant for this study and representative of clinical scenarios. Subsequently, the test object was printed and precise measurements were conducted utilizing a metrology-type Nikon XTH225 ST Reflection target in conjunction with VGStudio MAX analysis software. The results of our investigation revealed clinically negligible deviations in ball dimensions across all printers, with the maximum observed deviations ranging between 1.17% and 2.03% (notably observed in the Creo C5 printer). Transversal distortion exhibited variance based on the linear accuracy of each printer, with Stratasys21 and Formlabs 3B demonstrating superior accuracy among the evaluated printers. Distortions in the analyzed dimensions (specifically, anterior b-c, posterior a-d, and oblique a-c) were found to be uniform. In conclusion, while the first null hypothesis was rejected, indicating variations in trueness among the 3D printers assessed, our findings affirm the suitability of all five analyzed 3D printers for clinical applications. Consequently, these printers can be utilized for the fabrication of high-precision mastercasts in dental prosthodontics manufacturing.

The missiological character of deaf Catholic material culture

Too often, deaf Catholics are assumed and expected to be “passive recipients of mercy” rather than active participants in mission. This is far from the role that deaf Catholics have played in the body of Christ. This introduction to deaf Catholic material culture serves to highlight one often overlooked source that demonstrates how deaf Catholics are active participants in the church’s mission—through the creation, curation, and dissemination of objects. First, the essay contextualizes deaf Catholic material culture within the sociocultural model of disability, without which the meaning and value that the objects hold cannot be fully appreciated. Then it explains how these objects create culturally-deaf spaces and the significance these spaces hold for the deaf community. Second, an analysis of various objects in public and personal spaces, which range from liturgical art and liturgical furnishings to everyday items such as pens and mugs in deaf Catholic communities is presented. Characteristics of deaf Catholic material culture and an explanation of how and what theologies of mission are operationalized through these objects in various spaces are discussed. The essay concludes with a typology of deaf Catholic material culture and the missiological opportunities they present. In so doing, the author argues that attention to material culture in deaf Catholicism counters the misconception that deaf Catholics are incapable of mission and challenges ableist theological ideas of deafness which portray deaf Catholic experiences as deficient, spiritually inferior, and dependent on hearing people.

Creation of a prototype simulator object for quality control of bone segmentation algorithms for use in tomographic post-processing software

Considering the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in medicine, especially in radiology, and the advances in computational power and theoretical understanding of AI algorithms (MESKÓ; GÖRÖG, 2020), concerns about the reliability of these methods arise. This study developed a prototype simulator object for quality control of bone segmentation algorithms in computed tomography. To achieve this objective, a 3D simulator object was created using advanced printing techniques, with materials that faithfully replicate the density and hardness of human bones, such as RadioMatrix. The results indicated that bone segmentation in post-processing software is strongly influenced by tissue density and that currently available AI models lack explainability (EXAI). The analysis revealed the need for algorithms that consider not only density but also the specific shapes and characteristics of bones. It is concluded that the developed prototype is effective in the evaluation and quality control of bone segmentation algorithms, promoting greater safety in clinical application and better explainability of bone segmentation algorithms in post-processing software for computed tomography.

IMPACT OF SOME FACTORS ON PRICING IN THE REAL ESTATE MARKET OF RUSSIAN MEGACITIES

The authors analyze pricing in the residential real estate market in Moscow and St. Petersburg – the largest cities of the Russian Federation in the article. The issue of the cost of residential real estate is one of the most important for the residents of Russian megapolises. Megapolicies are the largest centers of migration, both from other regions and from other countries. The population of such cities is expanding at a significant rate, and the construction industry is increasing the rate of creation of new real estate objects. Under such conditions, it is crucial to realize the dependence of real estate value and key externalities.Within the framework of the study, the authors rely on the works in the field of real estate valuation and statistical methodology. The group of authors puts forward statistical hypotheses about the impact of some factors, in particular the level of cumulative inflation, the key rate set by the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, the average level of wages in the region and the weighted average rate on mortgage loans to citizens on the formation of the weighted average cost per square meter of housing in Russian cities.The statistical method of factor analysis is used to assess the significance of each of the factor variables on the resulting parameter. Regression modeling allows estimating the degree of impact of significant factors on the cost per square meter of residential real estate. The models allow to assess the trends of changes in the cost of real estate on the primary and secondary residential real estate markets in Russian megacities, as well as provide an opportunity to consider the differentiation in the impact of each factor between different types of markets in different cities.The results of the study may be useful in building industry forecasts and developing government measures to support residential construction.

Magic Furniture: Design Paradigm of Multi-Function Assembly.

Assembly-based furniture with movable parts enables shape and structure reconfiguration, thus supporting multiple functions. Although a few attempts have been made for facilitating the creation of multi-function objects, designing such a multi-function assembly with the existing solutions often requires high imagination of designers. We develop the Magic Furniture system for users to easily create such designs simply given multiple cross-category objects. Our system automatically leverages the given objects as references to generate a 3D model with movable boards driven by back-and-forth movement mechanisms. By controlling the states of these mechanisms, a designed multi-function furniture object can be reconfigured to approximate the shapes and functions of the given objects. To ensure the designed furniture easy to transform between different functions, we perform an optimization algorithm to choose a proper number of movable boards and determine their shapes and sizes, following a set of design guidelines. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our system through various multi-function furniture designed with different sets of reference inputs and various movement constraints. We also evaluate the design results through several experiments including comparative and user studies.

Knowledge creation through maker practices and the role of teacher and peer support in collaborative invention projects

This study analyzed collaborative invention projects by teams of lower-secondary (13–14-year-old) Finnish students. In invention projects, student teams design and make materially embodied collaborative inventions using traditional and digital fabrication technologies. This investigation focused on the student teams’ knowledge creation processes by examining how they applied maker practices (i.e., design process, computer engineering, product design, and science practices) in their co-invention projects and the effects of teacher and peer support. In our investigations, we relied on video data and on-site observations, utilizing and further developing visual data analysis methods. Our findings assist in expanding the scope of computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) research toward sociomaterially mediated knowledge creation, revealing the open-ended, nonlinear, and self-organized flow of the co-invention projects that take place around digital devices. Our findings demonstrate the practice-based, knowledge-creating nature of these processes, where computer engineering, product design, and science are deeply entangled with design practices. Furthermore, embodied design practices of sketching, practical experimenting, and working with concrete materials were found to be of the essence to inspire and deepen knowledge creation and advancement of epistemic objects. Our findings also reveal how teachers and peer tutor students can support knowledge creation through co-invention.

PhysiCell Studio: a graphical tool to make agent-based modeling more accessible.

Defining a multicellular model can be challenging. There may be hundreds of parameters that specify the attributes and behaviors of objects. In the best case, the model will be defined using some format specification - a markup language - that will provide easy model sharing (and a minimal step toward reproducibility). PhysiCell is an open-source, physics-based multicellular simulation framework with an active and growing user community. It uses XML to define a model and, traditionally, users needed to manually edit the XML to modify the model. PhysiCell Studio is a tool to make this task easier. It provides a GUI that allows editing the XML model definition, including the creation and deletion of fundamental objects: cell types and substrates in the microenvironment. It also lets users build their model by defining initial conditions and biological rules, run simulations, and view results interactively. PhysiCell Studio has evolved over multiple workshops and academic courses in recent years, which has led to many improvements. There is both a desktop and cloud version. Its design and development has benefited from an active undergraduate and graduate research program. Like PhysiCell, the Studio is open-source software and contributions from the community are encouraged.

Creative activity to create cultural values is the creation of cultural objects that have uniqueness, cultural, historical, artistic and scientific significance for society, which are aimed at the benefit of people and have an educational effect on society, as well as their interpretation.
