Developing Hypermedia Courseware Through Partnerships of Students and Instructors

Abstract This article describes the PSI (Partnership of Students and Instructors) hypermedia authoring and delivery system, which explores new approaches in creating partnerships between instructors and students for the creation, updating, and maintenance of a course's knowledge base. The system facilitates a transition from traditional text-based instructional materials to hypermedia presentations. A PSI prototype system allows instructor and student authors to contribute course materials through a superset of standard Hypertext Markup Language. The system provides hypermedia presentations of a course's topics, review questions, and explanations.

Technical and economic design support system in construction within the context of concurrent engineering

The authors demonstrate the usefulness of concurrent engineering techniques and at the same time highlight some of the difficulties encountered in creating knowledge bases and using electronic data interchange.

A computer aided complex condition monitoring system with multilevel knowledge base

This paper presents some problem areas of the creation and the use of a complex vibration-based diagnostic system with multi-level knowledge base. The system philosophy of computer aided condition monitoring systems is discussed. For spectral analysis variational coefficients of the amplitude spectrum should be calculated in order to indicate the time stability of particular frequency components. Comparison of the used recursive and non-recursive filters for the orbit and vector analysis is made. Non-recursive filters are preferred in the time domain analysis, especially because of their precisely limited transient process. Principles of the creation of a multi-level knowledge base as well as couplings between a bank of measurements and a multi-level knowledge base are explained. The number of levels of the knowledge base is given by the amount of information available.

An apprentice-based approach to knowledge acquisition

We explore here the feasibility of learning apprentice programs: interactive knowledge-based assistants that learn by observing and analyzing the problem-solving steps of their users. In particular, we describe a learning apprentice for digital circuit design, called LEAP. LEAP learns feasible ways of decomposing circuit modules into submodules, as well as the recommended method when there are competing feasible decompositions. VBL is an explanation-based learning technique used in LEAP to infer problem-reduction operators for decomposing circuit modules. PED is a general extension of explanation-based learning to incomplete domain theories containing determinations. PED is used in LEAP to learn control rules for ranking alternative decompositions as well as to extend LEAP's partial theory of circuit cost. An experimental study shows that by using this approach LEAP can learn a significant subset of a manually created knowledge base for boolean circuit design. The experimental study also reveals some limitations of LEAP, and more generally suggests directions for further research in building effective learning apprentice systems.

Consistency enforcement in medical knowledge base construction

Some aspects of knowledge base creation can be partially or completely automated, resulting in higher quality and smaller effort. Computer assistance is particularly valuable in ensuring the internal consistency of a knowledge base. The article describes several techniques for consistency enforcement in QMR-KAT, an interactive knowledge base editor for the INTERNIST-I/QMR medical knowledge base. Two strategies that improve consistency are applicable to a wide range of situations. The first strategy prevents simple (but common) inconsistencies. The second strategy reveals facts that are potentially (but not necessarily) inconsistent with known data, and may require further evaluation. Both strategies use the contents of the existing knowledge base in the evaluation of new facts.

Integrated Information for Maintenance Training, Aiding, and on - Line Documentation

Today's portable computer systems have the power, memory, and storage to support a broad spectrum of capabilities in maintenance environments. The computer hardware is a minor part of the success equation when compared to the intricacies of writing software and other design activities like knowledge base creation and interface development. The cost vs. benefit analysis is more likely to favor new technology when the same system can be used across multiple functions within a technical environment. The integration of training, job aiding, and on-line information is discussed in this paper. The software technologies of intelligent tutoring, expert-system job aiding, and multimedia information storage/retrieval will be described. Example systems are from the aviation and electric power generation maintenance environments.

Contribution to the Research and Development of Radiation Chambers in Steam Reforming. Problem-Oriented Application of a Fuzzy Expert System

An application of a fuzzy expert system intended for estimating some parameters of steam reforming can also be one of the examples of an ever increasing utilization of expert systems in practice. The present contribution deals with the method making use of a verified mathematical model for simulating thermal chemical processes in reforming furnace radiation chamber in order to create knowledge base. This base includes linguistic values of selected independent and dependent variable quantities. Examples given illustrate an evaluation of dependent variable quantities (methane conversion into carbon dioxide and monoxide, reaction tube service life) by means of the said expert system based on queries.

Heuristic determination of quantitative data for knowledge acquisition in medicine

Knowledge acquisition for medical knowledge bases can be aided by programs that suggest possible values for portions of the data. The paper presents an experiment which was used in designing a heuristic to help the process of knowledge acquisition. The heuristic helps to determine numerical data from stylized literature excepts in the context of knowledge acquisition for the QMR medical knowledge base. Quantitative suggestions from the heuristics are shown to agree substantially with the data incorporated in the final version of the knowledge base. The experiment shows the potential of knowledge base specific heuristics in simplifying the task of knowledge base creation.

Preceptor: a shell for medical expert systems and its application in a study of prognostic indices in stroke

Abstract: Preceptor is a shell system for building rule‐based expert systems to support clinical decision‐making. Its highly‐structured knowledge base is designed to reflect the variety of decision‐making activities in patient management. We describe Preceptor's knowledge base and dialogue structures, its inference strategies, and its comprehensive facilities for knowledge base creation and management. We report its application in a study of prognostic indices in stroke, and describe our approach to knowledge acquisition in this application.
