Nowadays, restoration and creation of pond-wetland ecosystem is important issue to maintain or recover biodiversity. It is estimated that fluctuation areas of dam lake have potential to develop pond-wetland ecosystem due to water supply by fluctuation of lake water level. In order to verify the abiotic and biotic potential, two shallow experimental ponds were constructed. Each pond has three different parts of depth as 25cm, 50cm, 75cm and the area of each part is 5m×5m. Topsoil was lied on waterproof sheets, which contain lake's water and rainfall. Monitoring work clarified following points.(1) From July 1998 to march 1999, the water depth of ponds changed approximately 40cm due to rainfall. The shallowest part (the depth is 25cm) dried up during rainless period, but other deeper parts never dried up. The temperature of all part of pond's water were over 30°C in summer. It might be too hot as habitat of aquatic insects and fishes. The water temperature of the bottom points in 75cm part kept 4°C, so this part is suitable for wintering.(2) 22 plant species recorded in the ponds and most of them were hydrophytes and emergent plants. In the 25cm part, many annual hydrophytes germinated from topsoil. This part could be safe site for wetland's plants.(3) 17 species of aquatic insect and 3 species of fish were recorded totally. Most of the aquatic insects estimated to come to the ponds by flying from neighbor ponds or wetlands. On the other hand, fishes must be left when lake's water level fell down. All these aquatic animals were present nearby emergent plants. From both abiotic and biotic aspects, the experimental ponds developed habitat function for aquatic and wetland's species. Therefore, constructing this kind of ponds can be one of the effective methods to create pond-wetland ecosystem besides dam lakes.
