AN ABNORMAL condition termed “pasting up” affects some flocks of chicks during the first few days of life. The condition is characterized by the adhering of the fecal material to the down around the vent. It is most prevalent in heavy breed chicks, but has also been observed in flocks of S. C. White Leghorn chicks. The New England College Conference (1942) recommends the feeding of 25 percent chick grain for the first two or three days to prevent “pasting up.” Peterson (1944) has reported that feeding cracked grains as the only feed for the first two days has a protective value against “pasting up.” Bearse, Berg, and Miller, (1943) have also shown that feeding cracked wheat as the only feed for the first two days practically eliminated the incidence of the disorder. They obtained equally good results, however, when the feed for the first two days consisted of 50 .
