Open Source Adoption for Digital Transformation and Data Management During the COVID-19 Crisis

With COVID-19-led business disruption and businesses expediting their move towards digital transformation, Industry experts observed a phenomenon of increased adoption of Open Source Software and database management systems to digitalize the business while keeping costs low. This research has studied this phenomenon using a three-step approach: using the collective intelligence of Twitter without the context of COVID-19, Twitter data with the context of COVID-19, and empirical validation with actual monthly downloads data of open source projects from SourceForge in Pre-COVID and COVID-19 time periods. The research finds that although the COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a digital transformation and the use of database management systems in many organizations, but there is no statistically significant increased use that can be attributed to a crisis response due to the pandemic.

Sovereignism as a product of crises: a comparative analysis of German and Spanish parties and their use of sovereignist claims

ABSTRACT Sovereignism is frequently considered as an important phenomenon in political science but barely studied on its own. This paper understands sovereignism as a distinct concept and explores sovereignist claims comparing two different political systems. It addresses the yet-to-be-discovered link between crises and increase (or stagnancy/decrease) in the adoption of sovereignist claims by political parties. Following a framing approach, we examine the euro, migration and COVID-19 crises to capture how these crises were used by German and Spanish parties to shape sovereignist claims. The analysis confirms that these three crises facilitated discursive opportunities for an increased use of sovereignist claims. Although newly emerged radical parties are identified as the main discursive entrepreneurs, mainstream parties also accommodate the sovereignist discourse under certain conditions. This paper makes an important contribution to studies on sovereignism offering an analytical framework as well as fresh insights on the conditions for the adoption of sovereignism.

The Impact of COVID-19 on Fertility Rates in China: An Empirical Analysis Using ARIMA Modeling

Abstract: This paper conducts an in-depth empirical analysis of the impact of COVID-19 on fertility rates in China using ARIMA modeling and forecasting techniques. The study reveals a significant and fundamental decline in birth rates throughout the pandemic, indicating that the long-term downward trend is more pronounced than ever. This unprecedented drop underscores the severity and uniqueness of the COVID-19 crisis's influence on reproductive behavior. The findings align with prior research on the global economic and health challenges' effects, but the scale and speed of changes during the pandemic remain unparalleled. These dynamics highlight the necessity to reassess and strengthen population management strategies and healthcare systems, particularly in reproductive health and family planning services. Despite utilizing a comprehensive dataset, limitations regarding data scope and sample size persist. Future research should broaden data scope and sample size, analyze regional differences, undertake long-term longitudinal studies, and incorporate multivariable analysis to better understand the pandemic's impact on fertility decisions.

Corona crisis disruptions and consequences for demand for freight transport: A screening of the effects for the largest logistics service providers in Norway

AbstractThe present article investigates corona crisis disruptions and consequences for freight transport demand, using shipment data from major logistic service providers in Norway, as well as interviews. We investigate how Covid-19 affected demand for freight transport and transport volumes in different segments, changes for parcel delivery, home-deliveries, which industries were most affected and discussed main issues for LSPs in maintaining robust transport chains. We find temporary reductions in B2B deliveries after the first Norwegian societal lockdown but large volume increases in B2C deliveries, which remained at higher levels and saw further waves of increases. Especially home deliveries and mailbox deliveries of parcels increased, particularly in relation with new infection waves. At an aggregate level, retail trade experienced by far the largest volume increases, followed by transport and storage. The latter can in part be due to increasing low-volume import (parcels) from abroad being attributed to e.g. warehouses or customs. At the other end of the scale, wholesale trade stands out with the largest tonnage decrease, followed by manufacturing.

The Degree of Marital Compatibility and Family Stability during the Corona Pandemic according to a Number of Variables among a Sample of Married Couples in Irbid Governorate

The study aimed to identify the nature of differences in the degree of marital compatibility and family stability among a sample of married couples in Irbid Governorate according to demographic and personal variables (gender, age, duration of marriage, educational level). The descriptive approach was used for the study, the study sample consisted of (400) husbands and wives from all residents of Irbid Governorate who were drawn randomly. The results of the study showed statistically significant differences at the significance level (α≤0.05) in the field of companionship according to the gender variable, as the value of (F) reached (3.864) with a statistical significance of (0.050) and in favor of males , There are statistically significant differences at the significance level (α≤0.05) in the field of role participation between spouses according to the gender variable, as the value of (F) reached (89.216) with a statistical significance (0.000), in favor of females, there are no statistically significant differences at the significance level (α≤0.05) in the fields (the presence of disorders and the desire for separation and divorce, there are statistically significant differences at the significance level (α≤0.05) in family stability according to the variables (gender - age - duration of marriage - educational level).

The COVID-19 lockdown paradox: democratic support during democratic restrictions

Abstract Previous research has shown that positive perceptions of government performance are linked to higher levels of citizens’ support for democracy. However, the policy response to the COVID-19 crisis presented a unique paradox as relative success in preventing the virus spread depended on expanding executive powers, often at the cost of individual freedoms. Exploring this paradox, we investigate whether the link between perceptions of government performance and support for democracy holds in a situation where positive performance essentially means a restriction of freedoms. Using original survey data from seven European countries, we show that notwithstanding the democratic sacrifices, people with positive evaluations of the government’s response are more likely to maintain support for the democratic system. Nevertheless, people weighed responses to the health domain more heavily than to the economic domain, suggesting that the output legitimacy – democratic support link varies across domain-specific evaluations.

The Cost of Managerial Caring: Exploring Identity Work in the Hybrid Work Context

ABSTRACTThe Covid crisis and the resulting enforced teleworking have significantly shaken up the manager's role, leading to increased identity work. This article draws on a longitudinal study of managers conducted over the course of a full year during the Covid crisis, from May 2020 to June 2021, using interviews and self‐administered diaries to reveal a distinct sequence of identity work. This sequence combines a reappropriation of the humane dimension inherent to the manager's role (expectations and practices of managerial caring) and a distancing from the team and the managerial role through disembodied management (cost of caring). We discuss these results by identifying a paradox of managerial caring which, translated in terms of identity, may help understanding the contemporary withdrawal tendencies among managers.

Seduction and Fidelity: Cunning and Power Relationships an Ethnographic Exploration in an Intensive Care Unit During the Covid-19 Crisis.

Sedufidelity-the contraction of seduction and fidelity-offers an interesting perspective for reflecting on the role of relationships and the ethics of care in highly technical healthcare settings. Understanding sedufidelity could help mitigate the observed social ruptures and promote a more humane approach to healthcare. However, challenges remain regarding its implementation, particularly in terms of building trust and loyalty towards management and healthcare policymakers. Furthermore, initiatives such as the 'haie de déshonneur' ('hedge of dishonour') can highlight the need and form of recognition sought by caregivers, given their strong symbolism. However, other actions can also be considered to strengthen relationships and attention paid to caregivers, such as a prior consultation.

Sustainable Development Goals and wellbeing for resilient societies: shocks and recovery

AbstractThe ‘decade of action’ intended to accomplish the ambitious 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) faces notable challenges. Our investigation into the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on SDG progress reveals important lessons for shaping effective policy interventions to ensure resilient societies and overall well-being. Through systematic mapping and a rapid review approach, our analysis reveals that nearly 90% of the SDGs, specifically 144 targets, were adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, there is a glimmer of opportunity: 66 targets stand to gain from the crisis-induced transformations, provided that the right choices are made. Achieving this goal demands a comprehensive approach and decisive leadership to steer an inclusive economic recovery that also safeguards the environment while safeguarding the environment. The intricate interplay between the ongoing planetary and post-COVID-19 crises, environmental challenges, and conflicts underscores the need for a proactive, deliberate and well-informed approach, marked by collaborative decision-making, which is imperative for effectively steering the ‘decade of action’ toward achieving the SDGs. These complex challenges demand collective, decisive action, all with the overarching aim of securing a just and sustainable future for all.

Community engagement in rural and urban marginalized communities in Jamaica: Building community resilience in crisis

ABSTRACT In the Caribbean, Jamaica mobilized strategies to ensure that the most vulnerable were protected against the threats and fears of COVID-19 and other crises over time. One strategy involved wide-scale collaboration with public and private sectors, non-governmental and community-based organizations, and volunteers. This study describes the approach taken by stakeholders in response to the needs of vulnerable residents in marginalized communities, and to highlight the experiences building community resilience during COVID-19. Three questions guided the research: 1) What major issues that affected the community during the COVID-19 crisis? 2) What measures have been implemented to help communities manage and adapt coping mechanism during this crisis? and 3) How has the community shown resilience and recovery in mitigating crises? A descriptive research design was employed comprising focus groups and interviews. We sampled 28 participants from 7 non-governmental organizations and 12 communities in rural and urban Jamaica. The analysis generated policy recommendations.

Risk Factors of the Severity of COVID-19 Infection in Infants

Background: The global COVID-19 crisis has profoundly affected populations worldwide. While it is widely accepted that older individuals are at greater risk of severe illness, data indicate that in newborns and infants, the disease is generally not fatal. Objectives: This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the roles of laboratory tests and clinical symptoms in determining the severity of COVID-19 infection in infants younger than three months. Methods: This study included all infants less than three months old with positive PCR tests for COVID-19 admitted to the Children's Medical Center between October 2020 and March 2022. We analyzed the association between disease severity and clinical symptoms, as well as laboratory findings. Results: Sixty-four neonates and infants under three months of age with COVID-19 participated in the study. Our findings suggest that lower birth weight and gestational age are associated with increased disease severity. Infants with underlying medical conditions were found to have a higher risk of reaching stage IIb or greater severity. Among laboratory and clinical findings, only white blood cell (WBC) count and cough symptoms showed a significant correlation with disease severity. Conclusions: Clinical evaluations, along with factors such as birth weight, gestational age, and underlying conditions, appear more effective in guiding decision-making for COVID-19 severity in infants. Further studies are necessary to explore the influence of these factors on COVID-19 severity in this age group.

CRISPR–Cas Systems Associated with Electrolyte-Gated Graphene-Based Transistors: How They Work and How to Combine Them

In this review, recent advances in the combination of CRISPR–Cas systems with graphene-based electrolyte-gated transistors are discussed in detail. In the first part, the functioning of CRISPR–Cas systems is briefly explained, as well as the most common ways to convert their molecular activity into measurable signals. Other than optical means, conventional electrochemical transducers are also developed. However, it seems that the incorporation of CRISPR/Cas systems into transistor devices could be extremely powerful, as the former provides molecular amplification, while the latter provides electrical amplification; combined, the two could help to advance in terms of sensitivity and compete with conventional PCR assays. Today, organic transistors suffer from poor stability in biological media, whereas graphene materials perform better by being extremely sensitive to their chemical environment and being stable. The need for fast and inexpensive sensors to detect viral RNA arose on the occasion of the COVID-19 crisis, but many other RNA viruses are of interest, such as dengue, hepatitis C, hepatitis E, West Nile fever, Ebola, and polio, for which detection means are needed.

Scale-specific effects of urban landscape pattern on the COVID-19 epidemic in Hangzhou, China

ContextUnderstanding the scale-specific effects of different landscape variables on the COVID-19 epidemics is critical for developing the precise and effective prevention and control strategies within urban areas.ObjectiveBased on the landscape epidemiology framework, we analyzed the scale-specific effects of urban landscape pattern on COVID-19 epidemics in Hangzhou, China.MethodsWe collected COVID-19 cases in Hangzhou from 2020‒2022 and combined the datasets of land use and land cover (LULC) and social gathering point (SGP) to quantify the urban landscape pattern. Optimal general linear model with stepwise regression was applied to explore the dominant landscape factors driving the COVID-19 transmission in the city. Furthermore, multi-scale geographically weighted regression illustrated the spatial heterogeneity and scale specificity of these landscape variables’ effects to COVID-19 epidemic.ResultsEight landscape variables of LULC and SGP patterns were identified which explained 68.5% of the variance in spatial risk of COVID-19. Different optimal bandwidths across these variables in MGWR indicated their scale-specific effects. LSI of green space enhanced the spatial risk across the entire region. The effects of landscape contagion, the number of water bodies, LSI of cropland and built-up areas, and the density of commercial houses were detected to vary between urban and suburban areas. The effects of LSI of water bodies and the density of shopping malls were found to vary among different districts.ConclusionsIn this study, we firstly discriminated the scale-specific effects of different landscape variables on the COVID-19 epidemic in the urban region. These findings can help to optimize the differentiated zoning prevention and control strategies for COVID-19 in cities and guide policy-making and urban planning at a multi-scale hierarchical perspective to improve public health and urban sustainability.

Surgical Challenges During the COVID-19 Crisis: A Comparative Study of Inguinal Hernia Treatment in Romania

Background and Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted healthcare systems worldwide, leading to the postponement of elective surgeries, including inguinal hernia repair (IHR), as healthcare resources prioritized critical care. This study aims to evaluate the impact of the pandemic on the incidence and outcomes of IHR procedures. Materials and Methods: A retrospective review was conducted on 604 patients who underwent IHR over six years, spanning pre-pandemic, pandemic, and post-pandemic periods. Data on patient demographics, type of surgical procedure (elective or emergency), use of mesh, surgical duration, hospitalization period, and postoperative outcomes were analyzed across the three time frames. Results: Patient age remained consistent across the three periods, but a significant increase in female patients was observed during and after the pandemic (p < 0.001). Elective IHR surgeries significantly decreased during the pandemic (p < 0.001), paralleled by an increase in emergency cases (p = 0.004). In the post-pandemic period, elective surgeries rebounded, while emergency interventions declined (21.9% vs. 10.3%). Mesh repair usage increased notably in the post-pandemic phase (p < 0.001). Although surgeries took longer during the pandemic (p < 0.001), both total and postoperative hospital stays were reduced during and after the pandemic (p < 0.001). Minimal postoperative complications were reported throughout, with only one mortality during the pandemic. Conclusions: This study highlights the need for robust healthcare strategies to maintain elective surgical care during global crises, as delays in IHR may elevate risks for complications like hernia incarceration and strangulation.

THE INFLUENCE OF GREEN BANKING IMPLEMENTATION, ISLAMIC SOCIAL REPORTING AND COVID-19 CRISIS ON PROFITABILITY WITH BANK SIZE AS A MODERATING VARIABLE IN ISLAMIC GENERAL BANK PERIOD 2016-2023

This study uses bank size as a moderating variable to examine the effects of the Covid-19 crisis, Islamic social reporting, and the deployment of green banking on profitability in Indonesian Islamic commercial banks. In this work, panel data regression and moderated regression analysis are used as data analysis methods. Eleven Indonesian Islamic commercial banks that were registered with the OJK between 2016 and 2023 used as the study's sample. The study's findings show that Islamic commercial banks' profitability is significantly and favorably impacted by ISR. Profitability (ROE) is significantly impacted negatively by the Covid-19 situation, but not ROA. In the meantime, Islamic commercial banks' profitability is unaffected by green banking. The association between green banking and profitability may be moderated by the moderating variable of bank size. This research highlights how crucial risk management, responsibility, and openness are in a period of unpredictable economic times. In the context of Islamic banking, the impact of ISR procedures and reactions to financial crises like COVID-19 is quite significant. Islamic banks should see an improvement in their financial performance in the future by strengthening their ISR management and comprehending the implications of green banking.

Navigating wicked problems: the unrecognised contribution of social pedagogy to Aotearoa New Zealand’s successful Covid-19 response

Aotearoa New Zealand’s government, alongside its Indigenous Māori and Pacific communities, spearheaded a unique and effective response to the first three years of the Covid-19 crisis that swept the world. The measures taken enabled the country to largely keep its society within its borders open and functional, minimise the impact of the pandemic on individual lives and community well-being and keep morbidity rates low. While there have been numerous studies and articles exploring this national response, to this point no examination has been undertaken through a social pedagogical lens. This article identifies key concepts from the discipline that are relevant to Aotearoa New Zealand’s context, discusses the ways in which these were (albeit unknowingly) applied during the peak of the pandemic and explores future potential for application in social and public health policy and practice. Weaving together a shared framework of Māori, Pacific and unique Aotearoa New Zealand world views and cultural practices alongside the principles of social pedagogy presents an exciting opportunity to shape a national crisis response that is effective and meets the needs of diverse communities. It is argued that making the contribution of social pedagogy visible has the potential to enhance responses to wicked problems in times of crisis and further the acceptance of the discipline in the southern hemisphere.

Risk Transmission and Hedging Strategies Between Chinese Stock Market and Major Trading Partners Along the Belt and Road in COVID-19 Scenario

This paper focuses on the multi-scale spillover and time-varying dependence of Chinese stock market and its important trading partners along the Belt and Road around the COVID-19 crisis. We use multiple methods - the DY (12) and BK (18) connectedness approaches that investigate dynamic and frequency connectedness; the wavelet coherence and the time-varying CoVaR to examine the connection between price lead lags and systemic risk spillovers. Our empirical results show spillovers to be asymmetric, and short-term spillovers dominating. Meanwhile, the level of spillover in the system increased sharply after the COVID-19. In the medium and long-term frequency domains, wavelet coherence reveals strong co-movement between the Chinese market and its major trading partners. We see that the highest level of systematic risk spillovers occurs at the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak. Finally, the weighting of the Chinese stock market in the effective portfolio rises after the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Financial Inclusion Question in Zimbabwe’s Post-COVID -19, New Normal: Implications for Adoption of Financial Technology (FinTech) on Service Providers

Financial inclusion will be accelerated by the technological opportunities for online financial transactions brought forth by the COVID-19 outbreak. As a result, because there were fewer digital financial transactions, the threats to COVID-19 that were present previously are now more substantial. The aim of this article is to assess the dangers, challenges, and opportunities for financial inclusion brought forth by the use of technology by COVID-19. According to the article, the inherent characteristics of financial technology (FinTech) in connection to financial inclusion allow it to reduce the negative economic and social effects of the ongoing COVID-19 situation. Under COVID-19, the introduction of digital financial transactions has sped up corporate operations and cut expense on doing business. As a result, women now have greater access to transactions involving financial technology (FinTech). The growth of digital financial transactions has made contactless and cashless purchases possible throughout the COVID-19 crisis. The expansion of digital financial inclusion makes it easier to swiftly and effectively implement public assistance programs, such as those for epidemic-affected women. Financial inclusion is being boosted by digital finance, which may eventually replace or improve traditional banking institutions. Working from home has undergone a "revolution" in a number of industries during COVID-19, including banking. Businesses should identify the optimal operating model mix for the future and make sure they have the infrastructure to support widespread, mass flexible working. This calls for reevaluating the function and application of corporate real estate. Since the labor force is likely to become more automated at the same time, resilience is essential. Conceptual Framework of this study is based on the financial inclusion and FinTech concepts which are the main variables guiding the study and it is underpinned by the theories of diffusion of innovation and the Financial Intermediation.

Dynamic speculation and efficiency in European natural gas markets during the COVID-19 and Russia-Ukraine crises

Efficiency and dynamic speculation literature focused on financial and crude oil markets whereas empirical studies on natural gas markets are limited. This study examines market efficiency and dynamic speculation in major European natural gas hubs (the Zeebrugge (ZEE) hub of Belgium, Title Transfer Facility (TTF) hub of the Netherlands, and National Balancing Point (NBP) hub of the UK) during the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia-Ukraine conflict. Using the Asymmetric multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (A-MFDFA) and the power law exponent (PLE) approach, we show that European natural gas markets exhibit an asymmetric multifractal behavior and long-memory effects, with variations observed during crises. The ZEE hub in Belgium and the NBP hub in the UK demonstrate a higher multifractality under different trends during the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, respectively. Notably, the TTF hub in the Netherlands emerges as the most efficient market during all subperiods. Moreover, our results, using the PLE approach, suggest that European gas market inefficiencies during crises can be attributed to speculative strategies that create self-perpetuating dynamics and diminish market transparency, leading to heightened risk and volatility in gas prices. Our findings underscore the need for regulatory intervention to mitigate excessive speculation and enhance transparency in gas markets. Diversifying gas supplies and fortifying European gas hubs emerge as pivotal strategies to bolster resilience and stability during crises.
