Attachment Theory and Methods for Meanings of Couple Intimacy

We provide comments on “Meaning of Intimacy: A Comparison of Members of Heterosexual and Same‐Sex Couples,” noting that there are both content and methodological issues that should be addressed in the article. First, attachment theory, used by social psychologists as a major component of the study of relationships, is entirely omitted. Second, both qualitative and quantitative issues are raised by the ways in which intimacy categories are developed and participant stories assigned to them. Finally, none of the results are statistically significant. We address these issues in detail.

The Effectiveness of Group Training of Transactional Analysis on Intimacy in Couples

The aim of the recent study was to examine the effectiveness of group training of Transactional Analysis on intimacy in Couples. The research method was quasi-experimental with pre-test and post-test control group design with 3- month follow up session. The sample consisted of 30 people who had shown positive responses to cooperation invitation of researchers and gained the lowest scores in 17- item intimacy scale. Then they randomly located in two 15-people control and experimental groups. The experimental group received eight 90-minute training sessions of Transactional Analysis. Afterwards the post-tests were taken to both groups and after 3 months a follow up test was taken. The ANCOVA was used for analysing the data. The results indicated that training Transactional Analysis concepts had a significant impact on increasing intimacy in Couples and the impression had been also stable for 3 months.

The article discusses the contribution of mobile phones to contemporary couples' intimacy. Mobile phones mediate and remediate conflicts, support different strategies, create opportunities for arguing and making up, and are a player in the game of designing and defending personal and collective territories.

On the Relationship Among Social Anxiety, Intimacy, Sexual Communication, and Sexual Satisfaction in Young Couples

This study was conducted to better understand why socially anxious individuals experience less sexual satisfaction in their intimate partnerships than nonanxious individuals, a relationship that has been well documented in previous research. Effective communication between partners is an important predictor of relationship satisfaction. Sexual communication, an important aspect of communication between romantic partners, is especially sensitive for couples given the vulnerability inherent in being open about sexual issues. Because socially anxious individuals characteristically report fear of evaluation or scrutiny by others, we hypothesized that the process of building intimacy by sharing personal information about oneself with one's partner, including when this information relates to one's sexuality and/or the sexual domain of the relationship, would be particularly difficult for socially anxious individuals. The present study examined fear of intimacy and sexual communication as potential mediators of the relationship between higher social anxiety and lower sexual satisfaction. Self-report data were collected from 115 undergraduate students and their partners in monogamous, heterosexual, committed relationships of at least 3months duration. Multilevel path modeling revealed that higher social anxiety predicted higher fear of intimacy, which predicted lower satisfaction with open sexual communication, which, in turn, predicted lower sexual satisfaction. Additionally, there was evidence of mediation as there were significant indirect effects of the antecedent variables on sexual satisfaction. The path model had excellent fit. Implications for social anxiety, intimate relationships, and couples therapy are discussed.

Amniocentesis Due to Advanced Maternal Age: The Role of Marital Intimacy in Couples’ Decision-Making Process

Due to the risk of fetal anomaly, pregnant women of advanced maternal age are given the option to undergo amniocentesis. In our study we aimed to describe couples’ decision-making process regarding amniocentesis, and assess whether it is influenced by marital intimacy and men’s participation in genetic counseling. During pregnancy, 112 couples answered the Personal Assessment of Intimacy in Relationships questionnaire and scales regarding the decision to undergo amniocentesis. Most couples shared and reached an agreement regarding this decision. Higher levels of marital engagement and communication, but not men’s participation, were associated with higher agreement, influence, and decision-sharing. Clinical implications are discussed.

Suggestions for Improving Intimacy in Couples in Which One Partner Has Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) is a neurobiological disorder that is both hereditary and lifelong. Three types of AD/ HD have been determined: hyperactive-impulsive, inattentive, and combined. The hyperactive-impulsive type is marked by a lack of self-control; people with this type have a constant need for activity and are very impatient. The inattentive type has difficulty paying attention, especially to details. The combined type has characteristics of both. The goals of this article are to discuss the impact that AD/HD has on couples when one partner has the disorder and to offer some suggestions for improving intimacy.

Increasing Couple Intimacy Using Virginia Satir's Temperature Reading

SUMMARY This article describes the process of using Virginia Satir's Temperature Reading, a communication tool, to increase intimacy with couples. It presents a rationale and theory for using a daiiy couple Temperature Reading to develop communication skills for learning how to share intimately in relationships. Temperature Reading provides a safe environment where each member of the couple can learn to share personal information and can practice listening to the other in a supportive and cooperative manner. Therapists and couples alike can utilize this process as described here.
