From a survey of girl students in ten elementary and secondary schools in both the county town and rural areas, this author finds that girl students of senior high schools have more serious psychological barriers. This is related to the following basic conditions: In terms of the ratio between boys and girls, they are about half and half in the elementary and junior high schools period. By the time they reach senior high schools, girl students account for only one-third to a quarter of the entire enrollment. In terms of disposition, girl students under age 14 attending either elementary or junior high schools are innocent, lively, optimistic, and eager for progress. Girl students of senior high schools are in the puberty age of 15 to 18. Quite a few of them have become introverts, and physiologically and psychologically they are undergoing changes much more complex than boys of the same age. With regard to the relationship between boys and girls, they communicate with each other on friendly terms and learn from each other regardless of the difference in sex when in elementary and junior high schools. When in senior high school quite a few girls seal themselves off; they want to have contact with the other sex but are afraid to do so. As a result, there is little communication between the two sexes, and they do not even speak to each other. But once they enter college, they immediately pick up normal and friendly relations. In terms of studies, girls usually perform better than boys in elementary and junior high school, and many girls are "top-notch" students. When they reach senior high school, girls experience more changes in study and tend to fall behind boys. One-third of the senior high girl students have a sound frame of mind and excel in studies. And some of them are eventually admitted into key universities. The remaining two- thirds, with their promotion to higher grades, acquire more psychological barriers, affecting the development of their intelligence in varying degrees. This should draw the attention of authorities concerned.
