La religiosité de l'émigré italien. Enquête en Allemagne, Suisse et Grande-Bretagne

This article presents a few elements concerning the religio sity of the Italian immigrant. It is a result of a synthesis of the research carried out by the Centro Studi Emigrazione- Roma between 1970 and 1976 in Germany, Switzerland and Great-Britain. After a general description of the sample of the population amongst which the survey has taken place, and after a re flection concerning the elements which, in a given situation, can influence the religious behaviour, the authors take into consideration four dimensions of the religiosity of Italian im migrants, as they emerge from the investigation : — the acquaintance with the religious institution and the frequenting thereof ; — doctrinal conformity and the expression of the faith ; — consistency in ethical practice ; — religious practice. In their conclusion, the authors show how the question of the specificity of the migrants' religiosity still remains an unexplored field of research. They insist moreover on how there has to be at least a passive discordance between the aspirations and the goals as they are expressed in the religiosity of the migrants, and the goals and means brought into play by the institutional Catholic Church. They finally point out the fundamental question concerning the existence of an ethnic church. Does this ethnic church meet a group's particular needs, is it an answer coming from individuals living with the nostalgia of the church in their country of departure, or does it aim at standardizing the migrant's needs in order to allow the ecclesial institution to survive ?

Hypothèses pour une analyse des stratégies religieuses au sein du monde migratoire en Europe

This article formulates a series of hypotheses concerning the religious strategies and practices in the world of Western European migration. Church activities are taken into con sideration, as well as the practices of the migrants themselves, but they are only seen in the context of Christianity. For the authors, the cognitive, symbolic and practical system which forms the religious behaviour of migrants has to be seen in relation to the milieu which they are living in, the social class which they belong to, and the role which they are assigned to play in both the country of departure and the country of arrival. We may also take into consideration the nature of " migratory projects " which influence the religious practices of the migrants. On this background one can understand and analyse the different observable religious migratory fields.

Bibliography and Archival Preservation of Non-English-Language Labor and Radical Newspapers and Periodicals in North America, 1845 to 1976

The intention of this project is to provide a comprehensive bibliography and microfilm collections of the non-English-language labor periodical publica tions of the United States and Canada written for and by immigrants. This will serve as a basis for a comparative cultural history of immigrants that entered the North American working class, whatever their social origin in their respective countries of departure. The importance of newspapers as sources for historical research has been recognized in recent years, so that there is no need for an extended discussion of their value. The newspaper preservation project developed by the Organization of American Historians, now under the supervision of the National Endowment for the Humanities testifies to this. In West Germany and in several other coun tries national libraries or associations of libraries have begun microfilming pro grams for their nation's newspapers. Also, nothing needs to be said about the sad state of preservation of labor and immigrant periodical publications in North America, notwithstanding the efforts of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin (Whi), a number of industrial relations libraries (Naas/Sakr bibliography), and more recently the Immigration History Research Center (IHRC) at the University of Minnesota. Our project concentrates on labor newspapers and other periodical publica tions. Because of the almost cyclical economic recessions and depressions they were particulary shortlived; because of their lower class public and because of the general disinterest of libraries and archives they are in a worse state of pres ervation than other periodical publications.
