Basic Interaction Behaviors: A Microcounseling Approach for Introductory Courses

Three brief instructional programs for beginning counselors are described. Each program is for the purpose of inducing entry‐level social skills that support effective counseling interaction. Design of microcounseling activities for a class‐size group is detailed. Pilot data and experimental data are presented demonstrating gains in observable learner behaviors. Implications for a competency‐based counselor education format are discussed.

Counseling and the psychology of communication

The psychology of communication can bring to counseling greater clarification of verbal and nonverbal interview interactions. Various communication channels are discussed, including language and nonlanguage forms. It is suggested that each message conveys both content and a definition of relationship. Communication does not function in a linear manner but in a system of feedback loops, each of which is comparable to a stimulus‐response‐reinforcement sequence. Examples of communication patterns are given to illustrate the kinds of messages conveyed in language and nonlanguage channels. All communication modalities should be taken into consideration in studies of counseling interactions, and training programs should make counselors more sensitive communication participants.

Projective tests in voactional counseling.

Summary In Switzerland, the role of projective techniques in vocational counseling is currently under debate. The author of a recent book on the Zulliger-test — a three card, Rorschach-type instrument — claims to have identified a number of syndromes that reflect vocationally relevant personality characteristics. His results are criticized on methodological grounds, and an alternative approach is proposed that emphasizes the expressive and essentially idiographic nature of projective test records. Their main contribution is to permit a better understanding of client motivations and attitudes, resulting in a more effective counseling interaction. Accordingly, these tests should be validated against attitudinal criteria and measures of counseling progress rather than long-term vocational behavior and success on the job.

Expression of Feelings in Group Counseling

70 high school students in 9 counseling groups were administered outcome instruments for self‐evaluation and evaluation by peers. Interaction in counseling was classified according to underlying feeling early and late in the series of 12 sessions. Tests of 6 hypotheses relating feeling changes occurring during counseling to counseling outcomes showed 2 results significant at the .05 level. Change in feeling seemed to correlate more with evaluation by peers than with self‐evaluation. The 9 groups were found to differ widely in type and amount of affective interaction. Methodological problems were considered. Discussion focused on implications for counseling practice and on relationships to published research.
