Theater Loudspeaker Design, Performance, and Measurement<!--<xref ref-type="other" rid="fn1-10.5594_J16527">*</xref>-->

Referring to the on-axis measurement out of doors and the correction factor obtained at the Academy Award Theater indoors, the listening tests with Motion Picture Research Council Test Reel ASTR-3 and current studio product verify the electrical-response curve needed for adequate bass response. Additional low-frequency rise was used to determine its effect. It was found that no appreciable equalization could be used. In the case of the high-frequency droop, the rate of attenuation for this particular loudspeaker system was determined to be optimum using a response curve which has been in use for many years with this type of diaphragm and horn construction. — The Motion Picture Research Council Bulletin on Standard Electrical Characteristics dated April 20, 1948, states: — “Although the standard electrical characteristics for the newer-type speaker systems are essentially the same as for the older-type systems, acoustical-response measurements and listening tests have shown that a substantial increase in response is being obtained at the higher frequencies with the newer systems. The increase in efficiency and extension of frequency range is desirable so that the theater may take advantage of the improvements that are continually raising the standard of quality of the release print.” — It has been found over the years that attempts to correct major irregularities in response by upward equalization yield sound distinctly inferior to that produced by a system which does not require this equalization. The outdoor free-field measurement technique described has supplied information in such a manner that improvements in design are indicated and then checked for results. Smoothness of response is constantly being sought and this tool definitely indicates the progress that is being obtained. — To our knowledge, this is the first time a standardized method of measuring theater loudspeakers has been conducted jointly by designers and users. The outcome of the tests described here demonstrates the practical value of concentrated action along this line.

Experiences with High Protein Diets for Chicks and Poults

THE literature on protein requirements of poultry is so extensive that no attempt will be made to review it in this report. The National Research Council bulletin on Recommended Nutrient Allowances for Poultry (Cravens et al., 1946) suggests that a chick starting diet should contain 20 percent of protein and that a turkey starting diet should contain 24 percent of protein.For most rapid growth of broilers, many authorities have recommended more than 20 percent of protein. Almquist and Asmundson (1944) found that they obtained more rapid growth during the first week when they fed their chicks 30 percent protein diets. The advantage over a 20 percent starter was maintained for 8 weeks. However, there was no difference in the growth rate after the first week. Studies on the Nutritional Requirements of Poults

THE high nutritional requirements of turkey poults make it essential that these requirements be accurately determined in order to avoid waste of feed during periods of critical shortage. Usually the requirements of poults parallel but exceed those of chicks. The National Research Council bulletin on Recommended Nutrient Allowances for Poultry (Cravens, et al, 1944) suggests that a turkey starting mash should contain 24 percent of protein and that it should include at least 4 to 5 percent of animal protein supplements. Hammond, Haynes, Marsden and Titus (1944) concluded that good results could be obtained with turkey starting rations in which all of the protein was derived from vegetable sources. Most workers prefer to retain some animal protein concentrates. Wilgus and Zander (1945) concluded from their chick work that a small amount of animal protein supplement was necessary in order to obtain optimum growth rates. High School Credit Courses in Music: Report of the National Research Council of Music Education

EDITOR'S NOTE: The following Council report was drawn up by a sub-committee under the chairmanship of Prof. Edgar B. Gordon of the University of Wisconsin. About a year and a half ago Prof. Gordon, Prof. John W. Beattie of Northwestern University, and Russell V. Morgan of Cleveland, were requested to present a report on this subject to the Commission on Unit Courses and Curricula of the North Central Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges; this report was presented to the Commission in December 1927, with the request that it be referred to the National Research Council for elaboration and completion. The chairman of the Commission so referred the report, and the Council now announces its final version. The adoption of this report by the five Sectional Conferences this spring makes it an official report of the National Conference. It will appear in the 1928 Book of Proceedings, and is available in bulletin form as Council Bulletin No. 10, which may be purchased from the editor at 15c per copy singly or at 10c per copy in quantities of ten or more.—P.
