CMB bispectrum constraints on DHOST inflation

We present the first direct constraints on a Degenerate Higher Order Scalar Tensor (DHOST) inflation model using the Planck 2018 Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) results on non-Gaussianities. We identify that the bispectrum consists of a fixed contribution following from the power spectrum and a linear combination of terms depending on five free parameters defining the cubic perturbations to the DHOST model. The former peaks in the squeezed limit, while the latter is maximised in the equilateral limit. We directly confront the model predictions to the CMB bispectrum statistics via the public code CMB-BEST and marginalize over the free parameters. We explicitly show that there are viable DHOST inflationary models satisfying both power spectrum and bispectrum constraints from Planck. However, rather surprisingly, the constraints exclude certain models at the 6σ-level even though they pass the conventional fudge factor tests. In this case and despite having a handful of free parameters, the model's large squeezed bispectrum cannot be cancelled out without introducing a large bispectrum in other limits which are strongly constrained by Planck's non-detection of primordial non-Gaussianity. We emphasize that first-order approximations such as fudge factors, albeit commonly used in the literature, may be misleading and provide weaker constraints. A proper analysis of the constraints from Planck requires a more robust approach, such as the one provided by the CMB-BEST code.

Estimation of imprints of the bounce in loop quantum cosmology on the bispectra of cosmic microwave background

Primordial non-Gaussianity has set strong constraints on models of the early universe.Studies have shown that Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC), which is an attempt to extend inflationary scenario to planck scales, leads to a strongly scale dependent and oscillatory non-Gaussianity. In particular, the non-Gaussianity function f NL (k 1, k 2, k 3) generated in LQC, though similar to that generated during slow roll inflation at small scales, is highly scale dependent and oscillatory at long wavelengths. In this work, we investigate the imprints of such a primordial bispectrum in the bispectrum of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB).Inspired by earlier works, we propose an analytical template for the primordial bispectrum in LQC.We write the template as a sum of strongly scale dependent and oscillatory part, which captures the contribution due to the bounce, and a part which captures the scale invariant behaviour similar to that of slow roll. We then compute the reduced bispectra of temperature and electric polarisation and their three-point cross-correlations corresponding to these two parts.We show that the contribution from the bounce to the reduced bispectrum is negligible compared to that from the scale-independent part. Thus, we conclude that the CMB bispectra generated in LQC will be similar to that generated in slow roll inflation. We conclude with a discussion of our results and its implications to LQC.

Ultra-light axions and the S 8 tension: joint constraints from the cosmic microwave background and galaxy clustering

We search for ultra-light axions as dark matter (DM) and dark energy particle candidates, for axion masses 10-32 eV ≤ m a ≤ 10-24 eV, by a joint analysis of cosmic microwave background (CMB) and galaxy clustering data — and consider if axions can resolve the tension in inferred values of the matter clustering parameter S 8. We give legacy constraints from Planck 2018 CMB data, improving 2015 limits on the axion density Ωa h 2 by up to a factor of three; CMB data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and the South Pole Telescope marginally weaken Planck bounds at m a = 10-25 eV, owing to lower (and theoretically-consistent) gravitational lensing signals. We jointly infer, from Planck CMB and full-shape galaxy power spectrum and bispectrum data from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), that axions are, today, < 10% of the DM for m a ≤ 10-26 eV and < 1% for 10-30 eV ≤ m a ≤ 10-28 eV. BOSS data strengthen limits, in particular at higher m a by probing high-wavenumber modes (k < 0.4h Mpc-1). BOSS alone finds a preference for axions at 2.7σ, for m a = 10-26 eV, but Planck disfavours this result. Nonetheless, axions in a window 10-28 eV ≤ m a ≤ 10-25 eV can improve consistency between CMB and galaxy clustering data, e.g., reducing the S 8 discrepancy from 2.7σ to 1.6σ, since these axions suppress structure growth at the 8h -1 Mpc scales to which S 8 is sensitive. We expect improved constraints with upcoming high-resolution CMB and galaxy lensing and future galaxy clustering data, where we will further assess if axions can restore cosmic concordance.

Primordial tensor bispectra in μ-CMB cross-correlations

Cross-correlations between Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature and polarization anisotropies and μ-spectral distortions have been considered to measure (squeezed) primordial scalar bispectra in a range of scales inaccessible to primary CMB bispectra. In this work we address whether it is possible to constrain tensor non-Gaussianities with these cross-correlations. We find that only primordial tensor bispectra with statistical anisotropies leave distinct signatures, while isotropic tensor bispectra leave either vanishing or highly suppressed signatures. We discuss how the angular dependence of squeezed bispectra in terms of the short and long momenta determine the non-zero cross-correlations. We also discuss how these non-vanishing configurations are affected by the way in which primordial bispectra transform under parity. By employing the so-called BipoSH formalism to capture the observational effects of statistical anisotropies, we make Fisher-forecasts to assess the detection prospects from μ T, μ E and μ B cross-correlations. Observing statistical anisotropies in squeezed ⟨γγγ⟩ and ⟨γγζ⟩ bispectra is going to be challenging as the imprint of tensor perturbations on μ-distortions is subdominant to scalar perturbations, therefore requiring a large, independent amplification of the effect of tensor perturbations in the μ-epoch. In absence of such a mechanism, statistical anisotropies in squeezed ⟨ζζγ⟩ bispectrum are the most relevant sources of μ T, μ E and μ B cross-correlations. In particular, we point out that in anisotropic inflationary models where ⟨ζζζ⟩ leaves potentially observable signatures in μ T and μ E, the detection prospects of ⟨ζζγ⟩ from μ B are enhanced.

The intrinsic bispectrum of the CMB from isocurvature initial conditions

Non-linear effects in the early Universe generate non-zero bispectra of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization, even in the absence of primordial non-Gaussianity. In this paper, we compute the contributions from isocurvature modes to the CMB bispectra using a modified version of the second-order Boltzmann solver SONG. We investigate the ability of current and future CMB experiments to constrain these modes with observations of the bispectrum. Our results show that the enhancement due to single isocurvature modes mixed with the adiabatic mode is negligible for the parameter ranges currently allowed by the most recent Planck results. However, we find that a large compensated isocurvature mode can produce a detectable bispectrum when its correlation with the adiabatic mode is appreciable. The non-observation of this contribution in searches for the lensing bispectrum from Planck allows us to place a new constraint on the relative amplitude of the correlated part of the compensated isocurvature mode of f CIP = 1±100. We compute forecasts for future observations by COrE, SO, CMB-S4 and an ideal experiment and conclude that a dedicated search for the bispectrum from compensated modes could rule out a number of scenarios realised in the curvaton model. In addition, the CMB-S4 experiment could detect the most extreme of those scenarios (f CIP = 16.5) at 2 to 3-σ significance.

Non-Gaussianity constraints using future radio continuum surveys and the multitracer technique

ABSTRACT Tighter constraints on measurements of primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) will allow the differentiation of inflationary scenarios. The cosmic microwave background bispectrum – the standard method of measuring the local non-Gaussianity – is limited by cosmic variance. Therefore, it is sensible to investigate measurements of non-Gaussianity using the large-scale structure. This can be done by investigating the effects of non-Gaussianity on the power spectrum on large scales. In this study, we forecast the constraints on the local PNG parameter fNL that can be obtained with future radio surveys. We utilize the multitracer method that reduces the effect of cosmic variance and takes advantage of the multiple radio galaxy populations that are differently biased tracers of the same underlying dark matter distribution. Improvements on previous work include the use of observational bias and halo mass estimates, updated simulations, and realistic photometric redshift expectations, thus producing more realistic forecasts. Combinations of Square Kilometre Array simulations and radio observations were used as well as different redshift ranges and redshift bin sizes. It was found that in the most realistic case the 1σ error on fNL falls within the range 4.07–6.58, rivalling the tightest constraints currently available.

Constraints on running of non-Gaussianity from large-scale structure probes

ABSTRACT In this letter, we present constraints on the scale-dependent ‘local’-type primordial non-Gaussianity, which is described by non-Gaussianity’s spectral index nNG, from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey and the quasar catalogue of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 6, together with the SDSS Data Release 12 photo-z sample. Here, we use the autocorrelation analyses of these three probes and their cross-correlation analyses with the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature map, and obtain the tight constraint on the spectral index: $n_{\rm NG}=0.2 ^{+0.7}_{-1.0}$ ($1\sigma$ C.L.), which shows the first competitive constraint on the running of non-Gaussianity from current large-scale structure clustering data. Furthermore, we also perform the forecast calculations and improve the limit of nNG using the future Euclid mission, and obtain the standard deviation at a 68 per cent confidence level: ΔnNG = 1.74 when considering the fiducial value fNL = 3, which provides the complementary constraining power to those from the CMB bispectrum information.

Constraining graviton non-Gaussianity through the CMB bispectra

Tensor non-Gaussianities are a key ingredient to test the symmetries and the presence of higher spin fields during the inflationary epoch. Indeed, the shape of the three point correlator of the graviton is totally fixed by the symmetries of the de Sitter stage and, in the case of parity conservation, gets contributions only from the ordinary gravity action plus a higher derivative term called the (Weyl)$^3$ action. We discuss current and future bounds on the three point tensor contribution from the (Weyl)$^3$ term using cosmic microwave background (CMB) bispectra. Our results indicate that forthcoming experiments, such as LiteBIRD, CMB-S4 and CORE, will detect the presence of the (Weyl)$^3$ term if $M_p^4 L^4 \sim 10^{17} r^{-4}$, where $L$ parametrizes the strength of the (Weyl)$^3$ term and $r$ is the tensor-to-scalar ratio, which corresponds to $L\gtrsim 3.2 \times 10^5 M_p^{-1}$, while the current upper limit is $M_p^4 L^4 = (1.1 \pm 4.0) \times 10^{19} r^{-4}$ (68%CL).

Tensor Non-Gaussianity Search: Current Status and Future Prospects

Primordial gravitational waves (GWs) are said to be a smoking gun in cosmic inflation, while, even if they are detected, the specification of their origins are still required for establishing a true inflationary model. Testing non-Gaussianity in the tensor-mode anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is one of the most powerful ways to identify sources of GW signals. In this paper, we review studies searching for tensor non-Gaussianities employing the CMB bispectrum and forecast future developments. No significant signal has so far been found from temperature and E-mode polarization data, while orders-of-magnitude improvements in detection limits can be achieved by adding the information of B-mode polarization. There is already an established methodology for bispectrum estimation, which encourages a follow-up investigation with next-decadal CMB B-mode surveys.

Measuring chiral gravitational waves in Chern-Simons gravity with CMB bispectra

Chern-Simons gravity coupled to the scalar sector through a generic coupling function f(ϕ) can be tested at the very high energies of the inflationary period. In ref. [1], we computed the theoretical parity breaking signatures of the ⟨ γ γ ζ⟩ primordial bispectrum which mixes two gravitons and one scalar curvature perturbation. We defined a parameter Π which measures the level of parity breaking of the corresponding bispectrum. In this work we forecast the expected 1 σ error on Π using the cosmic microwave background (CMB) angular bispectra. We find that, given the angular resolution of an experiment like Planck, Π ∼ 106 is detectable via the measurement of BBT or BBE angular bispectra if the tensor-to-scalar ratio r = 0.01. We also show that, from the theoretical point of view, Π can be greater than 106. Thus, our conclusion is that BBT or BBE CMB angular bispectra can become an essential observable for testing Chern-Simons gravity in the primordial universe.

Robust predictions for an oscillatory bispectrum in Planck 2015 data from transient reductions in the speed of sound of the inflaton

We update the search for features in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) power spectrum due to transient reductions in the speed of sound, using Planck 2015 CMB temperature and polarisation data. We enlarge the parameter space to much higher oscillatory frequencies of the feature, and define a robust prior independent of the ansatz for the reduction, guaranteed to reproduce the assumptions of the theoretical model and exhaustive in the regime in which the feature is easily distinguishable from the baseline cosmology. We find a fit to the $\ell\approx20$--$40$ minus/plus structure in Planck TT power spectrum, as well as features spanning along the higher $\ell$'s ($\ell\approx100$--$1500$). For the last ones, we compute the correlated features that we expect to find in the CMB bispectrum, and asses their signal-to-noise and correlation to the ISW-lensing secondary bispectrum. We compare our findings to the shape-agnostic oscillatory template tested in Planck 2015, and we comment on some tantalising coincidences with some of the traits described in Planck's 2015 bispectrum data.

Parity violation in the CMB trispectrum from the scalar sector

Under the existence of chiral non-Gaussian sources during inflation, the trispectrum of primordial curvature perturbations can break parity. We examine signatures of the induced trispectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. It is confirmed via a harmonic-space analysis that, as a consequence of parity violation, such a CMB trispectrum has nonvanishing signal in the $\ell_1 + \ell_2 + \ell_3 + \ell_4 = \text{odd}$ domain, which is prohibited in the concordance cosmology. When the curvature trispectrum is parametrized with Legendre polynomials, the CMB signal due to the Legendre dipolar term is enhanced at the squeezed configurations in $\ell$ space, yielding a high signal-to-noise ratio. A Fisher matrix computation results in a minimum detectable size of the dipolar coefficient in a cosmic-variance-limited-level temperature survey as $d_1^{\rm odd} = 640$. In an inflationary model where the inflaton field couples to the gauge field via an $f(\phi)(F^2 + F\tilde{F})$ interaction, the curvature trispectrum contains such a parity-odd dipolar term. We find that, in this model, the CMB trispectrum yields a high signal-to-noise ratio compared with the CMB power spectrum or bispectrum. Therefore, the $\ell_1 + \ell_2 + \ell_3 + \ell_4 = \text{odd}$ signal could be a promising observable of cosmological parity violation.

Planck2015 results

The Planck full mission cosmic microwave background(CMB) temperature and E-mode polarization maps are analysed to obtain constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity(NG). Using three classes of optimal bispectrum estimators - separable template-fitting (KSW), binned, and modal - we obtain consistent values for the local, equilateral, and orthogonal bispectrum amplitudes, quoting as our final result from temperature alone fNL^local=2.5+\-5.7, fNL^equil=-16+\-70 and fNL^ortho=-34+\-33(68%CL). Combining temperature and polarization data we obtain fNL^local=0.8+\-5.0, fNL^equil=-4+\-43 and fNL^ortho=-26+\-21 (68%CL). The results are based on cross-validation of these estimators on simulations, are stable across component separation techniques, pass an extensive suite of tests, and are consistent with Minkowski functionals based measurements. The effect of time-domain de-glitching systematics on the bispectrum is negligible. In spite of these test outcomes we conservatively label the results including polarization data as preliminary, owing to a known mismatch of the noise model in simulations and the data. Beyond fNL estimates, we present model-independent reconstructions of the CMB bispectrum and derive constraints on early universe scenarios that generate NG, including general single-field and axion inflation, initial state modifications, parity-violating tensor bispectra, and directionally dependent vector models. We also present a wide survey of scale-dependent oscillatory bispectra, and we look for isocurvature NG. Our constraint on the local primordial trispectrum amplitude is gNL^local=(-9.0+\-7.7)x10^4 (68%CL), and we perform an analysis of additional trispectrum shapes. The global picture is one of consistency with the premises of the LambdaCDM cosmology, namely that the structure we observe today was sourced by adiabatic, passive, Gaussian, and primordial seed perturbations.[abridged]

Looking for non-Gaussianity in all the right places: A new basis for nonseparable bispectra

Non-Gaussianity in the distribution of inflationary perturbations, measurable in statistics of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and large scale structure fluctuations, can be used to probe non-trivial initial quantum states for these perturbations. The bispectrum shapes predicted for generic non-Bunch-Davies initial states are non-factorizable ("non-separable") and are highly oscillatory functions of the three constituent wavenumbers. This can make the computation of CMB bispectra, in particular, computationally intractable. To efficiently compare with CMB data one needs to construct a separable template that has a significant similarity with the actual shape in momentum space. In this paper we consider a variety of inflationary scenarios, with different non-standard initial conditions, and how best to construct viable template matches. In addition to implementing commonly used separable polynomial and Fourier bases, we introduce a basis of localized piecewise spline functions. The spline basis is naturally nearly orthogonal, making it easy to implement and to extend to many modes. We show that, in comparison to existing techniques, the spline basis can provide better fits to the true bispectrum, as measured by the cosine between shapes, for sectors of the theory space of general initial states. As such, it offers a useful approach to investigate non-trivial features generated by fundamental properties of the inflationary Universe.

Planck2013 results. XXIV. Constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity

The Planck nominal mission cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps yield unprecedented constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity (NG). Using three optimal bispectrum estimators, separable template-fitting (KSW), binned, and modal, we obtain consistent values for the primordial local, equilateral, and orthogonal bispectrum amplitudes, quoting as our final result fNL^local= 2.7+/-5.8, fNL^equil= -42+/-75, and fNL^ortho= -25+\-39 (68% CL statistical). NG is detected in the data; using skew-C_l statistics we find a nonzero bispectrum from residual point sources, and the ISW-lensing bispectrum at a level expected in the LambdaCDM scenario. The results are based on comprehensive cross-validation of these estimators on Gaussian and non-Gaussian simulations, are stable across component separation techniques, pass an extensive suite of tests, and are confirmed by skew-C_l, wavelet bispectrum and Minkowski functional estimators. Beyond estimates of individual shape amplitudes, we present model-independent, 3-dimensional reconstructions of the Planck CMB bispectrum and thus derive constraints on early-Universe scenarios that generate primordial NG, including general single-field models of inflation, excited initial states (non-Bunch-Davies vacua), and directionally-dependent vector models. We provide an initial survey of scale-dependent feature and resonance models. These results bound both general single-field and multi-field model parameter ranges, such as the speed of sound, c_s \geq 0.02 (95% CL), in an effective field theory parametrization, and the curvaton decay fraction r_D \geq 0.15 (95% CL). The Planck data significantly limit the viable parameter space of the ekpyrotic/cyclic scenarios. The amplitude of the 4-point function in the local model tauNL < 2800 (95% CL). These constraints represent the highest precision tests to date of physical mechanisms for the origin of cosmic structure.

Cosmic microwave background bispectrum from nonlinear effects during recombination

We study cosmological perturbations by solving the governing Boltzmann and Einstein field equations up to second order and calculate the corresponding CMB bispectrum during recombination. We include all the second-order Liouville and collision terms, truncating the multipole hierarchy at $l=10$, consistently including all $m\ensuremath{\ne}0$ terms when calculating the bispectrum in the flat-sky limit. At this stage, we focus on contributions at and around recombination, and we neglect second-order vector and tensor perturbations, lensing effects, and late-time nonlinear ISW effects. We find that the signal-to-noise for the bispectrum is 0.69 for ${l}_{\mathrm{max}}=2000$, yielding an overall signal ${F}_{\mathrm{NL}}=3.19$ (normalized relative to the local model). We find that the effective ${f}_{\mathrm{NL}}$'s of the equilateral and local type are 5.11 and 0.88, respectively. This recombination signal will have to be taken into account in a quantitative analysis of the Planck data.

Radio galaxy populations and the multitracer technique: pushing the limits on primordial non-Gaussianity

We explore the use of different radio galaxy populations as tracers of different mass haloes and therefore, with different bias properties, to constrain primordial non-Gaussianity of the local type. We perform a Fisher matrix analysis based on the predicted auto- and cross-angular power spectra of these populations, using simulated redshift distributions as a function of detection flux and the evolution of the bias for the different galaxy types (star-forming galaxies, starburst galaxies, radio-quiet quasars, FR I and FR II AGN galaxies). We show that such a multitracer analysis greatly improves the information on non-Gaussianity by drastically reducing the cosmic variance contribution to the overall error budget. By applying this method to future surveys, we predict a constraint of σ fnl = 3.6 on the local non-Gaussian parameter for a galaxy detection flux limit of 10 μJy and σ fnl = 2.2 for 1 μJy. We show that this significantly improves on the constraints obtained when using the whole undifferentiated populations (σ fnl = 48 10 μJy and σ fnl = 12 for 1 μJy). We conclude that continuum radio surveys alone have the potential to constrain primordial non-Gaussianity to an accuracy at least a factor of 2 better than the present constraints obtained with Planck data on the cosmic microwave background bispectrum, opening a window to obtain σ fnl ∼ 1 with the Square Kilometre Array.

Orthogonal non-Gaussianity in DBI galileon: prospect for Planck polarization and post-Planck experiments

In this paper, we study cosmic microwave background (CMB) constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity in Dirac–Born–Infeld (DBI) galileon models in which an induced gravity term is added to the DBI action. In this model, the non-Gaussianity of orthogonal shape can be generated. We provide a relation between theoretical parameters and orthogonal/equilateral nonlinear parameters using the Fisher matrix approach for the CMB bispectrum. In doing so, we include the effect of the CMB transfer functions and experimental noise properties by employing the recently developed second order non-Gaussianity code. The relation is also shown in the language of effective theory so that it can be applied to general single-field models. Using the bispectrum Fisher matrix and the central values for equilateral and orthogonal non-Gaussianities found by the Planck temperature survey, we provide forecasts on the theoretical parameters of the DBI galileon model. We consider the upcoming Planck polarization data and the proposed post-Planck experiments Cosmic Origins Explore (COrE) and Polarized Radiation Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (PRISM). We find that Planck polarization measurements may provide a hint for a non-canonical sound speed at the 68% confidence level. COrE and PRISM will not only confirm a non-canonical sound speed but also exclude the conventional DBI inflation model at more than the 95% and 99% confidence level respectively, assuming that the central values will not change. This indicates that improving constraints on non-Gaussianity further by future CMB experiments is invaluable to constrain the physics of the early universe.

Localized correlated features in the CMB power spectrum and primordial bispectrum from a transient reduction in the speed of sound

The first year of observations by the Planck satellite mission shows that the cosmic microwave background (CMB) fluctuations are consistent with gaussian statistics in the primordial perturbations, a key prediction of the simplest models of inflation. However, there are hints of anomalies in the CMB power spectrum and bispectrum. We check for the possibility that some of these anomalous features have a common physical origin in a transient reduction of the inflaton speed of sound. We do this by exploiting predicted correlations between the power spectrum and bispectrum. Our results suggest that current data might already be sensitive enough to detect transient reductions in the speed of sound as mild as a few percent. Since this is a signature of interactions, it opens a new window for the detection of extra degrees of freedom during inflation.

General parity-odd CMB bispectrum estimation

We develop a methodology for estimating parity-odd bispectra in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). This is achieved through the extension of the original separable modal methodology to parity-odd bispectrum domains (ℓ1+ℓ2+ℓ3 = odd). Through numerical tests of the parity-odd modal decomposition with some theoretical bispectrum templates, we verify that the parity-odd modal methodology can successfully reproduce the CMB bispectrum, without numerical instabilities. We also present simulated non-Gaussian maps produced by modal-decomposed parity-odd bispectra, and show the consistency with the exact results. Our new methodology is applicable to all types of parity-odd temperature and polarization bispectra.
