Case Report: A Cosmetic Haptic Contact Lens

: A cosmetic haptic lens was fitted to a blind eye damaged in a motor vehicle accident. The choice of lens type and the method of fitting is described.

To the Editor. —In reference to a recent report by Krachmer and Purcell, in theArchives(96:57-61, 1978), we would like to draw your attention to a recent article and editorial. 1 We reported eight cases of infective keratitis associated with soft contact lens wear. Only one of these lenses was prescribed for therapeutic reasons. Five of the cases of cosmetic lens wearers had culturally proven infections. In the daily and intermittent lens wearers, the lens solutions all grew pathogenic organisms, though these did not necessarily match the organisms isolated from the eyes. To our knowledge, we were the first to report a corneal infection by Serratia liquefaciens in contact lens wearers. We have given several suggestions for the prevention of infection in contact lens wearers. These were underlined recently by another report following three of the cases. 2

THE "MYODISC" LENS AND BIFOCAL LENS

Most ophthalmologists have been confronted with the complaints of extremely myopic patients who object to the wearing of heavy ugly lenses. There has always been a need for a light and finer appearing lens to meet the needs of these patients. During the past year I have used over one hundred pairs of a new type of lens for high myopia in corrections over 8 diopters. The lens has been named the "myodisc," suggesting a myopic disk lens. It was originally presented as a cosmetic lens. However, it has proved to have many other desirable qualities. The "myodisc" is made in the form of a flat plano lens with a small concave disk ground in the center. The disks vary in size from 20 to 25 mm. The higher power lenses have the smallest disks.
