Concern for the environment has existed for many years in some rather restricted circles. In recent years, that concern has gained many supporters. It is welcome news, indeed, to learn about four relatively new efforts sponsored by industry that should prove beneficial to consumers, employees, and industry. The most ambitious of these projects is the Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology. Under the leadership of Leon Golberg, the institute, located in Raleigh, NC, will pursue its goal of providing "objective study of toxicology issues involved in the manufacture, handling, use and disposal of commodity chemicals." This organization is supported by the chemical industries, but decisions concerning its activities are the sole responsibility of the scientists. Research is being conducted at the institute as well as through fellowship grants.
