SummaryForty‐five strains of Cornynebacterium renale isolated in the Netherlands were serologically characterized by three reference strains of type I, type II and type III respectively.Of these strains, 31.3 per cent were of type I, 17.7 per cent of type II and 13.3 per cent of type III. Of the seventeen strains which could not be characterized, however, thirteen were found to be a new serotype (type IV). At least three of the four types were capable of giving rise to high crossreaction titres of complement‐fixing antibodies for M. johnei antigen in infected cattle. The theory is advanced that cattle subclinically infected with C. renale and animals which have recovered from clinical infections are the most important cause of non‐specific reactions in the CFT for M. johnei. Animals which have recovered will also continue to be carriers of C. renale for many years so that the immunological apparatus is stimulated to produce complement‐fixing antibodies. When there is any doubt as to a diagnosis of Johne's disease, it is advisable to perform a fluorescent antibody test with M. johnei antigen, which test does make it possible to differentiate between C. renale and M. johnei.
