Investigation of MoSe2 filled MAO Coating on TC6 alloy- tribological and corrosion characterization of multiple interface structure

To enhance the tribological properties and corrosion resistance of titanium alloys, this study proposes a novel tribological interface structure combining micro-arc oxidation ceramic coatings with MoSe2. Comprehensive analysis using X-ray diffractometry, profilometry, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy was conducted to evaluate the tribological characteristics of this structure under dry friction and liquid lubrication conditions. Electrochemical experiments assessed the corrosion resistance of the structure. The results indicated that under 3 N-2.5 cm/s, oil lubrication, the structure exhibited the best friction-reducing and lubricating performance, with the friction coefficient reduced by 75 %. The synergistic interaction between the low shear force MoSe2 particles and the TiO2-rich ceramic coating formed a lubricating layer on the surface, thereby achieving reduced friction and enhanced wear resistance. Additionally, this structure demonstrated excellent corrosion resistance. This study provides valuable insights for integrating micro-arc oxidation with new materials in engineering applications.

Visiting the microstructures, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of hot-rolled Al-Cu(-Mg) alloys with and without T6 treatment

It is important to optimize the microstructures of Al-Cu based alloys for expanding their practical applications. In this work, the effects of Mg additions and T6 treatment on the microstructures, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of hot-rolled Al-Cu alloy were investigated. The hot-rolled Al-4Cu, Al-4Cu-0.25Mg and Al-4Cu-0.5Mg (wt.%) alloys with and without T6 treatment were prepared. Experimental results indicated that the grain size of the as-rolled samples was decreased by adding Mg because of the introduction of S′-Al2CuMg phases, and the T6 treatment also obviously reduced the grain size with the help of static recrystallization regardless of alloy composition. However, the grain size of the Mg-free sample was smaller than that of the Mg-containing samples after T6 treatment, which might be resulted from the more nucleation sites provided by stored energy. The combination of Mg additions and T6 treatment could significantly enhance the mechanical properties with the help of increased second phases and decreased precipitate free zone widths, and the yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and fracture elongation were 333.5MPa, 397.1MPa and 24.5% for the T6-treated Al-4Cu-0.5Mg alloy. In addition, the corrosion resistance in 3.5wt.% NaCl solution was obviously enhanced by adding Mg, which was attributed to the narrow PFZs. Differently, the amounts of second phases were increased after T6 treatment, which induced more PFZs and damaged the corrosion resistance. As a result, the hot-rolled Al-4Cu-0.5Mg alloy with corrosion potential of -0.667V and corrosion current density of 2.668×10-7 A/cm2 exhibited the highest corrosion resistance. It is believed that this work can offer referenced information to design and process the high-performance Al-Cu based alloys in various service conditions.

Effect of Al/Cr ratio on structure, magnetism, and corrosion resistance of FeCoNiCr1-xAlx high entropy alloys

This study investigates the microstructure, magnetic properties, and corrosion resistance of FeCoNiCr1-xAlx (x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1) high-entropy alloys using the combination of experimental methods and first-principles calculations. XRD results reveal the FCC-BCC phase transition as x increases, and FeCoNiCr1-xAlx exhibits a noticeable dual-phase structure when x=0.75. The partial segregation between Ni and Al elements is indicated by SEM-EDS observations. The magnetism of both FCC and BCC phases become strong with increasing x, and the BCC phase consistently exhibiting higher magnetism than the FCC phase. Potentiodynamic polarization curves show that Al0.25 has the highest corrosion potential and the lowest corrosion current density. Under open circuit potential conditions, due to the difference between the corrosion potential and the open circuit potential, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements indicate that the corrosion resistance of the alloys follows the order: Al0 > Al0.5 > Al0.75 > Al0.25 > Al1. Considering both the soft magnetic behavior and corrosion resistance, Al0.75 is a optimal choice. These findings provide valuable insights for developing magnetic high-entropy alloy materials with superior corrosion resistance.

Optimizing the corrosion resistance of additive manufacturing TC4 titanium alloy in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis anodic environment

Titanium alloys are commonly used as the bipolar plate material in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). However, traditional machining methods are difficult to process titanium alloy parts, which further increases the cost of bipolar plates. The wire-arc directed energy deposition (WA-DED) additive manufacturing (AM) technology is low cost and high utilization of material. However, the undesirable microstructure always restricts the performance improvement. In this work, the electrochemical corrosion and passive characteristics of wrought TC4 and WA-DED AM TC4 alloys in the simulated PEMWE anode environment were investigated. The microstructure of AM TC4 alloy was optimized and the corrosion resistance was enhanced by heat treatment. The results indicate that the corrosion resistance of AM TC4 alloy is better than wrought TC4 alloy, and appropriate heat treatment can further improve the stability of passive film. Compared to wrought TC4, Ti −β phase fraction of AM TC4 decreased from 9.6 % to 1.3 %, and the heat treatment further reduced Ti −β phase fraction of AM TC4-850 and AM TC4-1050 alloys to 0.8 % and 0.1 %. The passive film thickness of wrought TC4, AM TC4, AM TC4-850, and AM TC4-1050 alloys calculated with the Power-Law model were 0.5 nm, 1.76 nm, 1.94 nm, and 2.02 nm, respectively. After heat treatment of 1050 °C, AM TC4-1050 alloy exhibited the best corrosion resistance, showing the lowest corrosion current density of 54 μA/cm2 and the lowest passive current density of 19.5 μA/cm2. Moreover, Ti oxide contributed most to the composition of passive film. In AM TC4-1050 alloy, the percentage of Ti oxides was 80.9 %, showing the best corrosion resistance.

Evaluation of different electrolytic solution composition on the microstructure and corrosion study on AZ31 magnesium alloy using PEO method

Abstract Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys are widely used in orthopedic implants due to their mechanical compatibility with bone tissue. However, their susceptibility to corrosion can compromise mechanical strength over time. The present study aims to enhance the corrosion resistance of AZ31 Mg alloy through Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) coatings incorporating Hydroxyapatite (HAP). The effects of 5g of HAP in different electrolytic solutions—Sodium Silicate (Na2SiO39H2O) + Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) and Sodium Phosphate (Na3PO4) + Triethanolamine (C6H15NO3)—on the microstructure and corrosion characteristics were evaluated. The phase composition was analyzed using x-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), while the surface morphology and cross-section of the coatings were assessed using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). Corrosion studies were performed using Potentiodynamic Polarization (PDP) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) under Simulated Body Fluid (SBF) conditions. The results showed that the sample with the solution containing 5 g of HAP + Na3PO4 + C6H15NO3 (PS-2) exhibited superior anti-corrosion properties compared to the sample with 5 g of HAP + Na2SiO3·9H2O + KOH (PS-1). Notably, the cross-sectional analysis revealed significantly smaller pores in the PS-2 coatings. Among the two coated samples, the highest polarization resistance of 3.06 × 106 Ω·cm2 was observed for PS-1, while PS-2 showed a lower resistance of 2.9 × 106 Ω·cm2, correlating with their morphological characteristics. These findings suggest that sodium phosphate and triethanolamine improve biocompatibility when combined with pure AZ31 Mg alloy and HAP coatings.

Effect of Combined Addition of La and Sm on Mechanical Properties, Microstructure Evolution, and Electrochemical Behavior of Mg-3Zn-1Mn/Sn-0.5Ca Alloy

The effects of the composite addition of La and Sm elements on the microstructural evolution, mechanical properties, and electrochemical behaviors of Mg-3Zn-1Mn/Sn-0.5Ca (wt.%) alloys are systematically investigated. The findings reveal that the Mg-3Zn-1Mn-0.5Ca alloy exhibits excellent ductility, achieving 26% elongation, whereas the Mg-3Zn-1Sn-0.5Ca alloy demonstrates good comprehensive mechanical properties. The addition of La and Sm results in a degree of grain refinement in both alloys and significantly bolsters the strength of the Mg-3Zn-1Mn-0.5Ca alloy, but it has a less pronounced effect on the mechanical properties of the Mg-3Zn-1Sn-0.5Ca alloy. Furthermore, the addition of La-Sm significantly improves the corrosion resistance of both alloys. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis reveals that all four alloys form a double-capacitance loop morphology in 3.5% NaCl, indicating the formation of a protective film during the corrosion process. Among them, the Mg-3Zn-1Mn-0.5Ca-1La-0.5Sm alloy exhibits the largest capacitance loop radius, which is consistent with its polarization curve, indicating the best corrosion resistance. At the corrosion potential of −1.382V, the corrosion current is 8.97 μA·cm−2.

Pitting corrosion resistance of tempered N08825 alloy in the inner layer of bimetallic composite pipe

Pitting corrosion resistance of N08825 alloy in the inner layer of bimetallic composite pipe SA210A/N08825 tempered at 570∼720 ℃ was investigated in NH4Cl solution by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electrochemical measurement techniques. The M23C6 precipitates, observed at the grain boundaries of inner layer alloy 825, exhibit a temperature-dependent behavior during tempering at 570∼720 ℃. The quantity of M23C6 precipitates and the pitting corrosion resistance change with the tempering temperature. When the tempering temperature increases from 570 to 660 ℃, the quantity of M23C6 precipitates increases, with the pitting potential (Ep) decreasing from about 499 ± 8.6–354 ± 6.7 mVSCE, the passive current density (ip) increases from about 1.9 ± 0.2–2.45 ± 0.3 μA cm−2, and the average number of pits on the specimen surface rises from 3 to 7. Conversely, when the tempering temperature increases from 660 to 720 ℃, the quantity of M23C6 precipitates decreases, leading to the Ep increases from about 354 ± 6.7–394 ± 14.6 mVSCE, the ip decreases from about 2.45 ± 0.3–2.34 ± 0.4 μA cm−2, and the average number of pits on the specimen surface decreases from 7 to 6. There is a strong relationship between the M23C6 precipitates and the pitting corrosion resistance. As the quantity of M23C6 precipitates increases, it results in the expansion of Cr-depleted zones on the specimen surface, the rise of passive film defects, and a subsequent reduction in the pitting corrosion resistance of inner layer alloy 825.

Corrosion behavior of novel Ti6422 alloy with equiaxed structure and lamellar structure in HCl solution

This study systematically investigated the electrochemical corrosion and static immersion corrosion behavior of the novel Ti6422 (Ti-6Al-4V-2Mo-2Fe) alloy with equiaxed (EM) and lamellar structure (LM) in HCl solution. The differences in corrosion performance between EM and LM samples were analyzed based on the characteristics of the passive film and substrate microstructure. Results indicated that the LM sample contained higher contents of TiO₂, Al₂O₃, and MoO₃ with higher stability compared with the EM sample, and the thickness of passive film was approximately twice that of the EM sample. Additionally, the donor density of LM sample was lower than EM sample. These findings indicate that the passive film on LM samples is thicker, with fewer defects and higher density. Electrochemical corrosion results revealed that the corrosion current of LM samples was lower and the polarization resistance was higher than these of EM samples, both suggesting superior corrosion resistance of LM samples. Immersion corrosion further confirmed that the LM sample had a lower corrosion rate. The enhanced corrosion resistance in LM samples was primarily due to higher content of corrosion-resistant β phase. Conversely, the numerous micro-galvanic cells between αs precipitates and adjacent β phase in EM samples weakened the corrosion resistance. Overall, these results demonstrated that regulating microstructure through heat treatment is an effective strategy for improving corrosion resistance of titanium alloys.

Revealing the effect of iron content on the microstructure evolution, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the A356-T6 aluminum alloys

Recently, the A356 alloy has been widely used in various fields owing to its low cost, excellent mechanical properties, and formability. However, the existence of Fe can significantly affect the comprehensive properties of A356 alloys. The present study systematically investigated the effects of different Fe contents on the microstructures, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of recycled A356-T6 alloys using different characterization technologies, including optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe X-ray micro-analysis (EPMA), tensile tests, and electrochemical tests. The results suggest that the volume fraction of the Fe-rich particles gradually increases with increasing Fe content, and their morphologies display a transformation from granular and short rod-like to acicular and Chinese-script. While the ultimate tensile strength of the A356-T6 alloys with different Fe contents remained relatively stable, their yield strengths gradually increased. Meanwhile, the elongation experiences a stepwise drop owing to the increase in the number fraction of brittle needle-shaped β-Al5FeSi (β-Fe) phases. Moreover, the results of the electrochemical tests suggest that a dramatic decline in the corrosion potential and an increase in the self-corrosion current density occurred with an increase in the Fe content, resulting in a considerable deterioration of the corrosion resistance.

Effect of Surface Roughness on the Electrochemical Behavior and Corrosion Resistance of TiTaNbZrAg Alloy with Different Amounts of Tantalum in Bulk Composition.

The corrosion behavior of the TiTaNbZrAg alloys with different amounts of tantalum (0%, 10% and 20%) and with distinct surface topography (smooth and rough) was investigated in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) for long-time immersion (1000 h). By this approach, we expect to bring about new insights into the influence of both the amount of Ta in the alloy composition and the surface topography on the corrosion behavior of the Ti-based alloys. The corrosion resistance was studied by Open Circuit Potential (OCP), Potentiodynamic Polarization (PP), and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). From the potentiodynamic investigations, it was observed that all types of samples showed good corrosion resistance (i.e., Rcorr < 10 µm y-1) and may be used successfully for medical applications. However, the samples with smooth surfaces and with a certain amount of Ta (10% and 20%) exhibit the best corrosion performance (Rcorr < 1 µm y-1). As regards the samples with rough surfaces, the results evidenced that they showed lower corrosion resistance (1 < Rcorr < 3 µm y-1), suggesting that the Ta presence does not necessarily hinder the corrosion processes. Actually, the synergetic effect of both the presence of Ta and surface roughness plays an important role in corrosion resistance.

Corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of carbon ion implanted AZ31B magnesium alloy

The poor corrosion resistance of magnesium limits its clinical applications. Accordingly, in the present study, carbon ions were incorporated into a AZ31b magnesium alloy surface via carbon plasma immersion ion-implantation to improve its corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. The surface morphology and properties of the modified alloy were evaluated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, water contact angle measurement, Raman scattering, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Furthermore, compositional depth profiles were obtained by glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy, revealing a Gaussian-like distribution of carbon concentration. Electrochemical and hydrogen-evolution analysis demonstrated the successfully improved corrosion resistance of the AZ31b Mg alloy, while its biocompatibility was demonstrated by MTT and cell-adherence assays.

The effects of ECAP, Mn and Ca elements on the microstructure and corrosion properties of magnesium alloys were investigated

In this study, through reasonable composition design, three elements of Zn, Mn and Ca, which are harmless to human body, were selected for alloying magnesium. The effects of ECAP treatment on the microstructure and corrosion properties of Mg-4Zn-1Mn-0Ca, Mg-4Zn-1Mn-0.2Ca and Mg-4Zn-0Mn-0.2Ca alloys were studied. The corrosion mechanism of Mg-Zn-Mn-Ca alloys with different components in Simulated. Body fluid (SBF) was analyzed by weight loss method and electrochemical test. The grains and the second phase were refined by Equal Angular Channel Pressing (ECAP). It was found that after 8 ECAP deformations, the microstructure of the alloy was refined and more uniform than that of the extruded alloy. The corrosion resistance of the Mg-Zn-Mn-Ca alloy after ECAP deformation in simulated body fluids was studied by electrochemical testing techniques, immersion experiments and observation of the microstructure and morphology of corrosion products. The relationship between microstructure characteristics, the behavior of the magnesium metal matrix and the properties of corrosion products was revealed. The results show that the microstructure of the alloy is refined and the corrosion resistance is improved with the increase in extrusion passes in the SBF solution. The corrosion resistance of magnesium alloy after 8 ECAP deformation is the best, showing small Icorr and large Rt. With the extension of the soaking time, the surface of the alloy will form a passivation film, which will protect the matrix and avoid further corrosion of the alloy. It is found that in SBF, the corrosion of the alloy surface is mainly pitting, which indicates that Ca2+, HCO3- and HPO42- in SBF can reduce the corrosion rate of magnesium alloy.

A novel corrosion resistant NiFeCrAlTi eutectic high entropy alloy with high strength and ductility

We present a novel corrosion resistant Ni42.6Fe24.6Cr16.4Al13.4Ti3 eutectic high entropy alloy (EHEA), which consists of FCC(L12) phase and BCC(L21) phase. The FCC and BCC phases contain numerous nano-precipitates, with sizes of ∼10 nm and 80 nm, respectively. The as-cast EHEA exhibits exceptional mechanical properties with a yield strength of ∼730 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of 1220 MPa and elongation of 25 %, surpassing those observed in other as-cast EHEAs. The excellent mechanical properties are attributed to the extensive dislocation activities and precipitation strengthening in both BCC and FCC phases, as well as hetero-deformation induced (HDI) strengthening. Besides, the Kurdjumov-Sachs (KS) orientation relationship between adjacent phases promotes the cooperative deformation of both constituent phases, thereby enhancing the ductility of the EHEA.

On the corrosion resistance of the CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloys in chloride-containing sulfuric acid solutions

The electrochemical reactivity of the high entropy Cantor alloy (CoCrFeMnNi) was investigated via potentiodynamic polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and surface analysis as a function of chloride content, in sulfuric acid solutions. The results revealed that corrosion mechanism of the CoCrFeMnNi alloy at the corrosion potential, is a two-step mechanism, involving one adsorbed intermediate, similar to that of pure iron in the H2SO4, and this model provided a good description of the impedance data. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) surface characterization and impedance data fitting revealed that chloride ions do not alter the corrosion mechanism or the thickness of the surface oxide film. Instead, they affect the corrosion resistance by changing the composition of the oxide film. Additionally, this work demonstrated that the corrosion mechanism of the CoCrFeMnNi alloy varies with the applied potential, as evidenced by impedance measurements under potentiostatic polarization. Surface observations using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and XPS analysis provided insights into the morphology and composition of the surface oxide film at different applied potentials, explaining the observed changes in impedance.

One parallel in early oxidation stages of Cr-containing alloys

The first oxide crystals formed during the early oxidation stages are considered to be the critical stage for the corrosion resistance of metallic materials against oxidants. The corrosion resistance of Cr-containing alloys is generally linked to Cr-rich oxide layers; however, their applicative performance varies remarkably. Classical models addressing the formation of these layers fail to account for the associated dynamics. We present evidence that Cr-containing Fe-, Co-, Ni-base and high-entropy alloys exhibit a parallel phenomenon during the initial transient stage: two-layered, multicompositional oxide grains with Cr always occupying the inner layer adjacent to the bulk. We propose that oxide growth occurs at a single location which allows to consistently incorporate all presented results. Oxide layer growth occurs inside the oxide grains at the transition to the Cr enrichment, independent of the initial oxide crystal structure. A potential multi-scale model for oxidation requires implementing the presented results which emphasizes the dominance of kinetic contributions during the early stages of oxidation.

Corrosion and wear mechanisms of rare earth (Gd, Sc, Y)-doped Zr-based amorphous alloys

Rare-earth elements have been utilized in the design and development of new amorphous alloys to improve the corrosion and wear resistance of Zr-based amorphous alloys. In this study, a rare-earth doped Zr-based amorphous alloy (Zr-BMG(RE)) was prepared by the copper mold casting method, which was investigated by corrosion and wear experiments. The results show that Zr-BMG(RE) has a completely amorphous structure, and the doping of rare earths Gd and Y raises the crystallization transition temperature of the amorphous. The addition of rare earth elements Gd and Sc increases the microhardness of Zr-based amorphous alloys, while rare earth element Y causes a slight decrease in microhardness. Gd and Sc will make Zr-based amorphous materials corrosion current density increases, the material pitting and localized corrosion, acid corrosion resistance is reduced. Y doping improves the self-corrosion potential of Zr-based amorphous alloys, reduces the corrosion current density, the surface passivation film is the densest, and the degree of charge transfer on the metal surface is the most difficult, Zr-BMG(Y) has a better corrosion resistance compared with other alloy materials. Zr-BMG(Gd) has the smallest friction rate (1.72 × 10−7mm3N−1mm−1), and the wear rates of the rare earth doped Zr-based amorphous alloys are all smaller than that of Zr-BMG, and the main loss mechanism of Zr-based amorphous alloys is the interaction of adhesive wear, abrasive wear, oxidative wear and fatigue wear. The mechanism of corrosion and wear resistance of rare earth to Zr-based amorphous alloys is discussed, which provides a new idea for the design of amorphous alloys.

Effect of Cu content on the mechanical, corrosion and antibacterial properties of porous NiTi-xCu alloys for biomedical application

Porous NiTi alloys are widely used as hard tissue replacement materials due to their excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. However, the lack of antibacterial ability may lead to bacterial infection after surgery. Therefore, enhancing the antibacterial ability of porous NiTi alloys by incorporating Cu is of significant value. In this paper, porous NiTi-xCu alloys (x = 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 at%) were prepared via powder metallurgy and the influence of Cu content on their properties were investigated. The results demonstrate that the compressive strength and antibacterial activity of the alloys increase with increasing Cu content. The NiTi-1.5Cu sample exhibits the highest compressive strength of 48.7 MPa and antibacterial rate of 99.6 %. Furthermore, the addition of Cu improves the corrosion resistance of the alloys, and the NiTi-1Cu specimen exhibits the lowest corrosion rate of 0.123 mm year−1. It is concluded that the incorporation of Cu effectively enhances the compressive strength, corrosion resistance and antibacterial properties of the porous NiTi alloys, making them promising candidates for hard tissue replacement applications.

Corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of magnesium alloy with bioactive glass-reinforced hydrogel composite coatings

Magnesium (Mg) alloy is a promising candidate for biodegradable implants; however, its rapid degradation can create an unstable physiological environment that hampers tissue regeneration. To address this challenge, a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel composite reinforced with bioactive glass (BG) particles was developed as a coating for Mg alloy pellets, which underwent laser surface texturing (LST) and salting-out processes. results demonstrate that these treatments significantly enhance both the adhesiveness and swelling of the hydrogel coating. Notably, electrochemical corrosion assessments reveal a marked improvement in corrosion resistance, with the Mg–B1-L-S specimen exhibiting the highest performance after salting-out treatment. Electrochemical corrosion assessments revealed a significant enhancement in corrosion resistance for Mg alloy with the hydrogel coating, with the Mg–B1-L-S specimen showing superior performance following salting-out treatment. Immersion tests in simulated body fluid (SBF) confirmed the protective effect of the coatings, indicating that the addition of BG particles and salting-out treatment reduced mass loss and maintained pH stability. Biocompatibility evaluations through in vitro viability tests and osteogenic differentiation assays indicate that the Mg–B1-L and Mg–B1-L-S specimens exhibit superior cell activity, surface adhesion, and osteogenic potential. These findings highlight the effectiveness of PVA-BG hydrogel composite coatings in enhancing the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of Mg alloy implants, positioning this approach as a significant advancement in the development of biodegradable materials for biomedical applications.
