Holographic Analysis of Boundary Correlation Functions for the Hyperbolic-Lattice Ising Model

Abstract We analyze boundary spin correlation functions of the hyperbolic-lattice Ising model from the holographic point of view. Using the corner-transfer-matrix renormalization-group (CTMRG) method, we demonstrate that the boundary correlation function exhibits power-law decay with quasiperiodic oscillation, while the bulk correlation function always decays exponentially. On the basis of the geometric relation between the bulk correlation path and distance along the outer edge boundary, we find that scaling dimensions for the boundary correlation function can be well explained by a combination of the bulk correlation length and background curvatures inherent to the hyperbolic lattice. We also investigate the cutoff effect of the bond dimension in CTMRG, revealing that the long-distance behavior of the boundary spin correlation is accurately described even with a small bond dimension. In contrast, the short-distance behavior rapidly loses its accuracy.

Single-layer tensor network approach for three-dimensional quantum systems

Calculation of observables with three-dimensional projected entangled pair states is generally hard, as it requires a contraction of complex multi-layer tensor networks. We utilize the multi-layer structure of these tensor networks to largely simplify the contraction. The proposed approach involves the usage of the layer structure both to simplify the search for the boundary projected entangled pair states and the single-layer mapping of the final corner transfer matrix renormalization group contraction. We benchmark our results on the cubic lattice Heisenberg model, reaching the bond dimension D=7, and find a good agreement with the previous results. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

CTMRG study of the critical behavior of an interacting-dimer model

The critical behavior of a dimer model with an interaction favoring parallel dimers in each plaquette of the square lattice is studied numerically using the corner transfer matrix renormalization group algorithm. The critical exponents are known to depend on the chemical potential of vacancies, or monomers. At large average density of the latter, the phase transition becomes the first-order. We compute the scaling dimensions of both the order parameter and temperature in the second-order regime and compare them with the conjecture that the critical behavior is the same as the Ashkin–Teller model on its self-dual critical line.

Corner transfer matrix renormalization group approach in the zoo of Archimedean lattices.

We develop a new methodology to contract tensor networks within the corner transfer matrix renormalization group approach for a wide range of two-dimensional lattice geometries. We discuss contraction algorithms on the example of triangular, kagome, honeycomb, square-octagon, star, ruby, square-hexagon-dodecahedron, and dice lattices. As benchmark tests, we apply the developed method to the classical Ising model on different lattices and observe a remarkable agreement of the results with the available from the literature. The approach also shows the necessary potential to be applied to various quantum lattice models in a combination with the wave-function variational optimization schemes.

Critical line of the triangular Ising antiferromagnet in a field from a C_{3}-symmetric corner transfer matrix algorithm.

The corner transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG) algorithm has been extensively used to investigate both classical and quantum two-dimensional (2D) lattice models. The convergence of the algorithm can strongly vary from model to model depending on the underlying geometry and symmetries, and the presence of algebraic correlations. An important factor in the convergence of the algorithm is the lattice symmetry, which can be broken due to the necessity of mapping the problem onto the square lattice. We propose a variant of the CTMRG algorithm, designed for models with C_{3}-symmetry, which we apply to the conceptually simple yet numerically challenging problem of the triangular lattice Ising antiferromagnet in a field, at zero and low temperatures. We study how the finite-temperature three-state Potts critical line in this model approaches the ground-state Kosterlitz-Thouless transition driven by a reduced field (h/T). In this particular instance, we show that the C_{3}-symmetric CTMRG leads to much more precise results than both existing results from exact diagonalization of transfer matrices and Monte Carlo.

Tensor network variational optimizations for real-time dynamics: Application to the time-evolution of spin liquids

Within the Projected Entangled Pair State (PEPS) tensor network formalism, a simple update (SU) method has been used to investigate the time evolution of a two-dimensional U(1) critical spin-1/2 spin liquid under Hamiltonian quench [Phys. Rev. B 106, 195132 (2022)]. Here we introduce two different variational frameworks to describe the time dynamics of SU(2)-symmetric translationally-invariant PEPS, aiming to improve the accuracy. In one approach, after using a Trotter-Suzuki decomposition of the time evolution operator in term of two-site elementary gates, one considers a single bond embedded in an environment approximated by a Corner Transfer Matrix Renormalization Group (CTMRG). A variational update of the two tensors on the bond is performed under the application of the elementary gate and then, after symmetrization of the site tensors, the environment is updated. In the second approach, a cluster optimization is performed on a finite (periodic) cluster, maximizing the overlap of the exact time-evolved state with a symmetric finite-size PEPS ansatz. Observables are then computed on the infinite lattice contracting the infinite-PEPS (iPEPS) by CTMRG. We show that the variational schemes outperform the SU method and remain accurate over a significant time interval before hitting the entanglement barrier. Studying the spectrum of the transfer matrix, we find that the asymptotic correlations are very well preserved under time evolution, including the critical nature of the singlet correlations, as expected from the Lieb-Robinson (LR) bound theorem. Consistently, the system (asymptotic) boundary is found to be described by the same Conformal Field Theory of central charge c = 1c=1 during time evolution. We also compute the time-evolution of the short distance spin-spin correlations and estimate the LR velocity.

Anisotropic deformation of the 6-state clock model: Tricritical-point classification

The two-dimensional q-state clock models exhibit the Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless (BKT) transition for q≥5 since they are a subset of the isotropic XY model. We examine the 6-state clock model with an anisotropic deformation. Selecting the 6-state Potts model as a source of the deformation, the model naturally violates the discrete rotational symmetry of the clock model. We introduce the anisotropic deformation parameter α in the clock model interpolating the clock (α=1) and the Potts (α=0) models. We employ the corner transfer matrix renormalization group method to analyze the phase transitions on the square lattice in the thermodynamic limit. Three different phases and phase transitions are identified. The phase diagram is constructed, and we determine a tricritical point at αc=0.21405(4) and Tc=0.834017(5). Analyzing the latent heat and the entanglement entropy in the vicinity of the Tc(αc), we observe a single discontinuous phase transition and two BKT phase transitions meeting in the tricritical point. The tricritical point exhibits a phase transition of the second order with the critical exponents β≈1/10 and δ≈14. We conjecture that an infinitesimal surrounding of the tricritical point consists of the three fundamental phase transitions, in which the first and the BKT orders gradually weaken into the second-order tricritical point.

Variational optimization of tensor-network states with the honeycomb-lattice corner transfer matrix

We develop a method of variational optimization of the infinite projected entangled pair states on the honeycomb lattice. The method is based on the automatic differentiation of the honeycomb-lattice corner transfer matrix renormalization group. We apply the approach to the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1/2 and ferromagnetic Kitaev models on the honeycomb lattice. The developed formalism gives quantitatively accurate results for the main physical observables and has a necessary potential for further extensions.

TeNeS: Tensor network solver for quantum lattice systems

TeNeS (Tensor Network Solver) [1,2] is a free/libre open-source software program package for calculating two-dimensional many-body quantum states based on the tensor network method and the corner transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG) method. This package calculates ground-state wavefunctions for user-defined Hamiltonians and evaluates user-defined physical quantities such as magnetization and correlation functions. For certain predefined models and lattices, there is a tool that makes it easy to generate input files. TeNeS uses an OpenMP/MPI hybrid parallelized tensor operation library and thus can perform large-scale calculations using massively parallel machines. Variational methods for contracting projected entangled-pair states

The norms or expectation values of infinite projected entangled-pair states (PEPS) cannot be computed exactly, and approximation algorithms have to be applied. In the last years, many efficient algorithms have been devised -- the corner transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG) and variational uniform matrix product state (VUMPS) algorithm are the most common -- but it remains unclear whether they always lead to the same results. In this paper, we identify a subclass of PEPS for which we can reformulate the contraction as a variational problem that is algorithm independent. We use this variational feature to assess and compare the accuracy of CTMRG and VUMPS contractions. Moreover, we devise a new variational contraction scheme, which we can extend to compute general N-point correlation functions.

Variational Corner Transfer Matrix Renormalization Group Method for Classical Statistical Models

In the context of tensor network states, we for the first time reformulate the corner transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG) method into a variational bilevel optimization algorithm. The solution of the optimization problem corresponds to the fixed-point environment pursued in the conventional CTMRG method, from which the partition function of a classical statistical model, represented by an infinite tensor network, can be efficiently evaluated. The validity of this variational idea is demonstrated by the high-precision calculation of the residual entropy of the dimer model, and is further verified by investigating several typical phase transitions in classical spin models, where the obtained critical points and critical exponents all agree with the best known results in literature. Its extension to three-dimensional tensor networks or quantum lattice models is straightforward, as also discussed briefly.

Ising ferromagnets and antiferromagnets in an imaginary magnetic field.

We study classical Ising spin-1/2 models on a two-dimensional (2D) square lattice with ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions, under the effect of a pure imaginary magnetic field. The complex Boltzmann weights of spin configurations cannot be interpreted as a probability distribution, which prevents application of standard statistical algorithms. In this work, the mapping of the Ising spin models under consideration onto symmetric vertex models leads to real (positive or negative) Boltzmann weights. This enables us to apply accurate numerical methods based on the renormalization of the density matrix, namely, the corner transfer matrix renormalization group and the higher-order tensor renormalization group. For the 2D antiferromagnet, varying the imaginary magnetic field, we calculate with high accuracy the curve of critical points related to the symmetry breaking of magnetizations on the interwoven sublattices. The critical exponent β and the anomaly number c are shown to be constant along the critical line, equal to their values β=1/8 and c=1/2 for the 2D Ising model in a zero magnetic field. The 2D ferromagnets behave in analogy with their 1D counterparts defined on a chain of sites, namely, there exists a transient temperature which splits the temperature range into its high-temperature and low-temperature parts. The free energy and the magnetization are well defined in the high-temperature region. In the low-temperature region, the free energy exhibits singularities at the Yang-Lee zeros of the partition function and the magnetization is also ill-defined: It varies chaotically with the size of the system. The transient temperature is determined as a function of the imaginary magnetic field by using the fact that from the high-temperature side both the first derivative of the free energy with respect to the temperature and the magnetization diverge at this temperature.

Simulation of three-dimensional quantum systems with projected entangled-pair states

Tensor network algorithms have proven to be very powerful tools for studying one- and two-dimensional quantum many-body systems. However, their application to three-dimensional (3D) quantum systems has so far been limited, mostly because the efficient contraction of a 3D tensor network is very challenging. In this paper we develop and benchmark two contraction approaches for infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPEPS) in 3D. The first approach is based on a contraction of a finite cluster of tensors including an effective environment to approximate the full 3D network. The second approach performs a full contraction of the network by first iteratively contracting layers of the network with a boundary iPEPS, followed by a contraction of the resulting quasi-2D network using the corner transfer matrix renormalization group. Benchmark data for the Heisenberg and Bose-Hubbard models on the cubic lattice show that the algorithms provide competitive results compared to other approaches, making iPEPS a promising tool to study challenging open problems in 3D.

Finite-temperature symmetric tensor network for spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the square lattice

Within the tensor network framework, the (positive) thermal density operator can be approximated by a double layer of infinite Projected Entangled Pair Operator (iPEPO) coupled via ancilla degrees of freedom. To investigate the thermal properties of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice, we introduce a family of fully spin-$SU(2)$ and lattice-$C_{4v}$ symmetric on-site tensors (of bond dimensions $D=4$ or $D=7$) and a plaquette-based Trotter-Suzuki decomposition of the imaginary-time evolution operator. A variational optimization is performed on the plaquettes, using a full (for $D=4$) or simple (for $D=7$) environment obtained from the single-site Corner Transfer Matrix Renormalization Group fixed point. The method is benchmarked by a comparison to quantum Monte Carlo in the thermodynamic limit. Although the iPEPO spin correlation length starts to deviate from the exact exponential growth for inverse-temperature $\beta \gtrsim 2$, the behavior of various observables turns out to be quite accurate once plotted w.r.t the inverse correlation length. We also find that a direct $T=0$ variational energy optimization provides results in full agreement with the $\beta\rightarrow\infty$ limit of finite-temperature data, hence validating the imaginary-time evolution procedure. Extension of the method to frustrated models is described and preliminary results are shown.

Global optimization of tensor renormalization group using the corner transfer matrix

A tensor network renormalization algorithm with global optimization based on the corner transfer matrix is proposed. Since the environment is updated by the corner transfer matrix renormalization group method, the forward-backward iteration is unnecessary, which is a time-consuming part of other methods with global optimization. In addition, a further approximation reducing the order of the computational cost of contraction for the calculation of the coarse-grained tensor is proposed. The computational time of our algorithm in two dimensions scales as the sixth power of the bond dimension while the higher-order tensor renormalization group and the higher-order second renormalization group methods have the seventh power. We perform benchmark calculations in the Ising model on the square lattice and show that the time-to-solution of the proposed algorithm is faster than that of other methods.

Corner transfer matrix renormalization group analysis of the two-dimensional dodecahedron model.

We investigate the phase transition of the dodecahedron model on the square lattice. The model is a discrete analog of the classical Heisenberg model, which has continuous O(3) symmetry. In order to treat the large on-site degree of freedom q=20, we develop a massively parallelized numerical algorithm for the corner transfer matrix renormalization group method, incorporating EigenExa, the high-performance parallelized eigensolver. The scaling analysis with respect to the cutoff dimension reveals that there is a second-order phase transition at T_{c}^{}=0.4398(8) with the critical exponents ν=2.88(8) and β=0.21(1). The central charge of the system is estimated as c=1.99(6).

Full nonuniversality of the symmetric 16-vertex model on the square lattice.

We consider the symmetric two-state 16-vertex model on the square lattice whose vertex weights are invariant under any permutation of adjacent edge states. The vertex-weight parameters are restricted to a critical manifold which is self-dual under the gauge transformation. The critical properties of the model are studied numerically with the Corner Transfer Matrix Renormalization Group method. Accuracy of the method is tested on two exactly solvable cases: the Ising model and a specific version of the Baxter eight-vertex model in a zero field that belong to different universality classes. Numerical results show that the two exactly solvable cases are connected by a line of critical points with the polarization as the order parameter. There are numerical indications that critical exponents vary continuously along this line in such a way that the weak universality hypothesis is violated.

Absence of logarithmic divergence of the entanglement entropies at the phase transitions of a 2D classical hard rod model

Entanglement entropy is a powerful tool to detect continuous, discontinuous and even topological phase transitions in quantum as well as classical systems. In this work, von Neumann and Renyi entanglement entropies are studied numerically for classical lattice models in a square geometry. A cut is made from the center of the square to the midpoint of one of its edges, say the right edge. The entanglement entropies measure the entanglement between the left and right halves of the system. As in the strip geometry, von Neumann and Renyi entanglement entropies diverge logarithmically at the transition point while they display a jump for first-order phase transitions. The analysis is extended to a classical model of non-overlapping finite hard rods deposited on a square lattice for which Monte Carlo simulations have shown that, when the hard rods span over 7 or more lattice sites, a nematic phase appears in the phase diagram between two disordered phases. A new Corner Transfer Matrix Renormalization Group algorithm (CTMRG) is introduced to study this model. No logarithmic divergence of entanglement entropies is observed at the phase transitions in the CTMRG calculation discussed here. We therefore infer that the transitions neither can belong to the Ising universality class, as previously assumed in the literature, nor be discontinuous.

Finite-m scaling analysis of Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transitions and entanglement spectrum for the six-state clock model.

We investigate the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions for the square-lattice six-state clock model with the corner-transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG). Scaling analyses for effective correlation length, magnetization, and entanglement entropy with respect to the cutoff dimension m at the fixed point of the CTMRG provide transition temperatures consistent with a variety of recent numerical studies. We also reveal that the fixed-point spectrum of the corner-transfer matrix in the critical intermediate phase of the six-state clock model is characterized by the scaling dimension consistent with the c=1 boundary conformal field theory associated with the effective Z_{6} dual sine-Gordon model.

Influence of applied electric and magnetic fields on a thermally-induced reentrance of a coupled spin-electron model on a decorated square lattice

The combination of an exact and Corner Transfer Matrix Renormalization Group (CTMRG) methods is used to study an influence of external electric and magnetic fields on existence of intriguing reentrant magnetic transitions in a coupled spin-electron model on a decorated square lattice. The two-dimensional (2D) decorated square lattice with localized nodal spins and delocalized electrons is taken into account. It was found that the competition among all involved interactions (the electron hopping, spin-spin and spin-electron interaction, external electric and magnetic fields) in combination with thermal fluctuations can produce new type of reentrant magnetic transitions. Depending on the model parameters the non-zero fields can stabilize or destabilize magnetic reentrance. In addition, an alternative and more effective way, for modulating the magnetic reentrance is found. An origin of intriguing low-temperature round maximum in the specific heat was explained as a consequence of rapid changes in the sublattice magnetizations, which is induced through a competition of all presented interactions.
