Developing a scale is not enough: on the importance of nomological validity

PurposeThe purpose of this paper, a critical reflection, is twofold. First, by comprehensively reviewing scale development procedures in hospitality research, a concerning lack of nomological validity testing is demonstrated. Second, the need for nomological validity testing is discussed and both conceptually and empirically reasoned.Design/methodology/approachThis research systematically reviews scale development studies in three leading hospitality journals, including Cornell Hospitality Quarterly, International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management and International Journal of Hospitality Management over ten years (2012–2021) to analyze the completeness of scale development procedures. Specifically, the authors evaluate whether the reviewed studies engage in testing the nomological and predictive validity of the newly developed measures.FindingsThe results indicate a concerning gap in the current practices in hospitality research. Specifically, only 33.3% of the examined studies assess nomological validity. These findings collectively underscore the need for improving the comprehensiveness of scale development processes in hospitality research.Research limitations/implicationsThe study offers important implications for hospitality researchers. The paper provides an extensive discussion on the importance and benefits of testing for nomological validity in scale development studies, contributing to the completeness and consistency of scale development procedures in the hospitality discipline.Originality/valueThis research critically assesses prevalent, and widely accepted, scale development procedures in hospitality research. This research empirically demonstrates the neglect of nomological validity issues in scale development practices in hospitality research. Scale development is an essential scientific practice used to create a research instrument in a field of study, improving our understanding of a specific phenomenon and contributing to knowledge creation. Considering the significance of scale development in advancing the field of hospitality research, the validation procedures involved in the scale development processes are of utmost importance and should be thoroughly applied.

Revisit hospitality and tourism research rankings in six journals: Second decade of the new millennium

The purpose of this research was to replicate an earlier study that analyzed hospitality and tourism research contributions in the first decade of the new millennium (Park et al., 2011) using a time frame of 2010-2019. The present study reviewed six top-tier hospitality and tourism journals, including the International Journal of Hospitality Management, Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research, Cornell Hospitality Quarterly, Tourism Management, Journal of Travel Research, and Annals of Tourism Research. The papers were classified by research themes in the hospitality and tourism categories, respectively. The results offered the rankings by publication productivity pertaining to individual authors, universities, and countries/regions across the world. The findings give insights into future directions and identify research needs for academicians and industry practitioners in the hospitality and tourism field.

A content analysis of hospitality research's research methods in the 2010s

PurposeThis study aims to describe the development of hospitality research in terms of research methods and data sources used in the 2010s.Design/methodology/approachContent analyses of the research methods and data sources used in original hospitality research published in the 2010s in the Cornell Hospitality Quarterly (CQ), International Journal of Hospitality Management (IJHM), International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management (IJCHM), Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research (JHTR) and International Hospitality Review (IHR) were conducted. It describes whether the time span, functional areas and geographic regions of data sources were related to the research methods and data sources.FindingsResults from 2,759 original hospitality empirical articles showed that marketing research used various research methods and data sources. Most finance articles used archival data, while most human resources articles used survey designs with organizational data. In addition, only a small amount of research used data from Oceania, Africa and Latin America.Research limitations/implicationsThis study sheds some light on the development of hospitality research in terms of research method and data source usage. However, it only focused on five English-based journals from 2010–2019. Therefore, future studies may seek to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on research methods and data source usage in hospitality research.Originality/valueThis is the first study to examine five hospitality journals' research methods and data sources used in the last decade. It sheds light on the development of hospitality research in the previous decade and identifies new hospitality research avenues.

Analysis in Research PRODUCTIVITY in the Hospitality Area

Purpose: This study has the following three purposes. First, this study compares the results of research by Kim et al.(2013) with the results of this study and analyzes how much tourism and hospitality professionals have contributed to the academia since 2010. Second, this study analyzes the contribution of researchers ac-cording to their positions. Third, the targeted subjects of this study are English-written journals. This study ana-lyzes whether the group of researchers who speak English as their mother language has a high contribution to English-speaking journals or whether the group of non-English-speaking researchers is high. Method: This study carries out the analysis using the research methods of Sheldon(1991) and Kim et al.(2013). The journals for the analysis of research productivity for this study were selected as Journal of Travel Research, Cornell Hospitality Quarterly, and Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research listed in the Social Science Citation Index(SSCI). Information on all research papers published from 2000 to 2015 was collected from the three journals, and analyses of authorship and research productivity were conducted. Results: The results of the study are as follows. First, there is no big difference between the tourism and hospitality researchers in the contribution of the three journals over the period. However, it is evident that the degree of contribution of non-tourism and non-hospitality professionals to academic journals increased by about 5% over the five years from 2011 to 2015. Second, although there are somewhat differences by journals, it was analyzed that overall, the group of full professors showed higher productivity of research papers than the group of associate and assistant professors. Third, even though they are non-English-speaking researchers, non-English-speaking researchers consistently contribute to English-speaking journals. Conclusion: Based on the results, this study comes to a conclusion that academic interactions between tour-ism and hospitality fields and other disciplines are increasing, so many topics that are able to be linked to other disciplines and tourism and hospitality fields should be discussed for academic development. Also, this study shows a contradiction that is the expectation that research productivity in the group of assistant professors is higher than other positions for reasons such as tenured position. Lastly, this study turns out that the productivi-ty of non-English-speaking researchers is significant even in English-written journals.

Gaining and sustaining ‘hospitable’ employment for disability youth

As the hospitality industry globally suffers persistent skills shortages, organisations are increasingly looking to non-traditional labour markets to fill vacancies. Indeed, hospitality has a long tradition of employing from society’s margins [1]. Research has shown hospitality firms are more likely than other industries to hire people experiencing disability [2]. Therefore, hospitality has the need, the tradition and the capacity to implement and support lasting change in the employment of disability youth.
 The Australian National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which is overhauling the sector and transforming the way persons experiencing disability access services, is modelled on research demonstrating the broader economic benefits of greater inclusive workforce participation [3]. The scheme is also consistent with the fact that employment is the key to exits from disadvantage for most people of working age [4]. Yet Australia ranks 21st out of 29 OECD nations in disability employment rates [5]. These poor rates of providing inclusive employment are often levelled at firms’ unwillingness to hire applicants with a disability [6].
 In late 2016, a disability services provider (DSP) and a registered charity partnered in a mobile coffee cart social enterprise to create open employment pathways for a group of disability youth previously employed in the ‘sheltered workshop’ model. A 360-degree ethnography combining interview and observational methods [7] was designed to investigate the holistic experiences of the youth and to gain insights into the levers and barriers regarding open employment. The agency/structure dualism framed the study, as it is recognised that agency is in itself not sufficient when its expression is constrained by an individual’s social deficits and the legacies of their entrenched disadvantage [8]. In all, five ‘baristas’ experiencing disability (across 10 interviews), 11 co-workers/managers from the DSP and the charity, and 21 customers comprised the sample.
 Previous research has identified industry’s reticence to employ people with disability as a key barrier, despite ability and willingness to work [5]. This study, however, identified a complex range of structural factors inhibiting the agency of disability youth to self-determine towards open employment. These included a history of poor experiences in institutional settings (e.g. schooling and sporting), the safety and security of sheltered workshops, parental oversight and the staffing requirements of DSP social enterprises. Surprising individual-level factors were also manifest, including the inability to responsibly manage new- found workplace independence and an absence of extrinsic motivators to work – given that the disability youth enjoyed financial security regardless of earnings.
 This research challenges the conventional wisdom that organisations alone need to revisit their willingness, capacity and preparedness for providing accessible employment, and rather suggests that deep-seated structural factors, and their impacts on youth, require concomitant attention.

Experimental Researches in Tourism - A Bibliometric Analysis

The aim of the study is to reveal the empirical trends in the tourism literature by analyzing the experimental researches carried out in the field of tourism in terms of bibliometric. The research data comprise 648 studies published “empirical” and “experimental” topic title between 1982-2017 in the top five tourism journals according to the Journal Citation Reports which are Tourism Management(TM), Journal of Travel Research(JTR), Journal of Sustainable Tourism(JST), Cornell Hospitality Quarterly(CHQ) and Annals of Tourism Research(ATR) indexed in "Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism" research area. The journals are examined in terms of publication numbers by years, country cooperations, common publication citation networks and topic orientations. Social network analysis has been used to determine the country collaborations, common publication citation networks and topic orientations. According to the results obtained in the study; %92,1 of publications were published after 2000. 58.5% of the publications were published between 2011 and 2017. USA and Spain have an important role in country cooperations. “Multivariate Data Analysis” written by Joseph F. Hair, Jr et al. in 2010 is the most basic reference source that guides the studies. This book was effective especially in the period between 2014 and 2017. Behavioral intention, strategic planning researches and environmental innovation are the most studied topics.

Living Without OTAs—Goodbye Columbus: Putting the Jenie Back in the Bottle

A recent Cornell Hospitality Quarterly article highlighted a unique natural experiment where an entire city had all its hotel delisted from all online travel agents for more than 4 years. The article provides great background to the delisting and highlights the impacts on hotel revenue and accommodation taxes for the county. The article estimates that even though the hotels relisted at all online travel agents (OTAs), there was a substantial gain to both hotels and accommodation tax collectors during the OTA delisting period. The impact estimates are based solely on the loss of demand realized in neighboring Phenix City, AL, once Columbus is relisted at OTAs. In the following, we highlight some concerns with these estimates and indicate that the losses may in fact be quite substantive and perhaps more indicative of why Columbus hotels relisted at the OTAs.

Knowledge mapping of hospitality research − A visual analysis using CiteSpace

Hospitality literature constitutes a considerable accumulation of data for follow-up studies. This study used CiteSpace to analyze investigations published in three top journals of hospitality research: International Journal of Hospitality Management (2008–2014), Cornell Hospitality Quarterly (2008–2014), and International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management (2009–2014). This application resulted in comprehensive knowledge maps of hospitality research. The study identified major disciplines that provide knowledge and theories for the hospitality discipline as well as contemporary research topics and most influential researchers.

Common method bias in hospitality research: A critical review of literature and an empirical study

Common method variance has received much attention in the behavioral sciences. Nonetheless, scant scholarly effort has been invested in handling common method variance in hospitality research. This study investigates the current status of controlling for common method variance in hospitality research and assists researchers in taking appropriate actions. Study 1 shows hospitality researchers’ endeavors to control for common method bias through a critical review of literature published in four leading hospitality journals in the ten years from 2006 to 2015: International Journal of Hospitality Management, Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research, Cornell Hospitality Quarterly and International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management. In Study 2, empirical investigations examine the effectiveness of a procedural remedy (temporal separation) and a statistical control (an unmeasured method factor approach) with two independent samples. The results of Study 1 reveal that most survey-related publications in the four journals fail to address or acknowledge common method variance. Moreover, only a limited number of techniques is found to be used to control for method variance. The findings of Study 2 suggest that temporal separation with a time lag of one day leads to a weak control for method variance; however, the use of an unmeasured method factor significantly helps control for method variance in the model.

Environmental management research in hospitality

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to review and synthesise 149 hospitality-related studies published in the past two decades pertaining to environmental management (EM). The review was divided into three main stages: 1993-1999, 2000-2009 and 2010-2014 and provided future research directions.Design/methodology/approachThe study sample consisted of articles published between 1993 and 2014 in four leading hospitality journals. The four journals chosen werethe International Journal of Hospitality Management,Cornell Hospitality Quarterly,International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management and Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research. The title, abstract and the content, as needed, of all EM-related full-length articles from these four journals were content analysed. Editors’ notes, book reviews, industry news, conference papers and research notes were excluded from this paper.FindingsEM research in the hospitality industry during the first two stages focused on the development of environmental policies and practices, green consumerism, managers’ environmental attitudes, indoor air quality and smoke-free environments, sustainable development, environmental performance, environmental cost control and environmental management systems (EMSs). During the third stage from 2010 to 2014, topics about environmental benchmarking and indicators have surfaced. Notwithstanding this, EM in the environmental reporting, and green marketing have been pursued less enthusiastically.Research limitations/implicationsCompared with the mainstream management literature and considering the future development of EM, hospitality scholars are encouraged to extend their research to include green marketing, environmental technologies, environmental reporting, carbon footprint, employees’ green behaviour, the effects of EM on hospitality firms’ stakeholders and small- and medium-sized hospitality firms. In addition, more effort should be spent on developing hospitality-specific theories for EM.Originality/valueLittle has been done to determine the main research agendas in hospitality EM. A review of recent research on this topic provides an inventory of existing knowledge and points out areas requiring further knowledge exploration.

Service Research in the Hospitality Literature

This study applies a Delphi analysis regarding the level of integration of service topics in the hospitality literature, as found in 539 service-related papers published in four hospitality journals from 1998 to 2012. The journals in question are Cornell Hospitality Quarterly, International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, International Journal of Hospitality Management, and Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research. The number of service-related studies account for 16 percent of the total pool of articles in the four journals over the fifteen-year period, and the analysis records an increase in the number of service-based articles published over this period. Since then, the number of articles dealing with service-related phenomena has ebbed somewhat. Theory-testing papers dominated the hospitality literature during the study period, accounting for more than half of the papers, while theory-building papers accounted for a quarter of all papers, and around 15 percent had a conceptual purpose. The most popular topic for papers in this sample was service experience, followed by operations management, human resource management, and accounting.

Sustaining Utility Cost Controls

Over the years, annual changes in hotel utility costs have moved in sync with the energy component of the consumer price index (CPI). From 2000 through 2009, the correlation coefficient between these two measurements was .964. However, since 2010, we have seen a departure from this historical symmetry. In 2010 and 2011, hotel utility expenses grew 80 percent less than the energy CPI. Then in 2012, while hotel utility expenditures were declining, the energy CPI continued to grow. In this edition of the Cornell Hospitality Quarterly, several scholars present the findings of their analysis of green and sustainable practices within the lodging industry. The impacts of green and sustainable practices on hotels can vary from positive public relations to complying with meeting planner Request for Proposal requirements, thus improving revenue. However, for many owners and operators, the primary payback from investing in green and sustainable practices is an assumed reduction in utility costs. Each year since 1933, PKF Hospitality Research, LLC (PKF-HR) has collected annual operating statements from thousands of hotels across the United States. In accordance with the Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry, four utility cost categories are captured in the firm’s Trends® database: electricity, gas/fuel, steam, and water/sewer. To provide some context to the discussion of green and sustainable practices and their impact on hotel operating expenses, we have analyzed utility cost data from the Trends® database for the period 2000 through 2012.

The effects of education and income on consumers' motivation to read online hotel reviews

An increasing number of consumers are using the Internet for online advice and recommendations. Consumers read these electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) comments for various reasons. The current study is an extension to that of Kim, Mattila, and Baloglu (2011)1, with the aim of measuring the effects of income and education on eight motives for reading online reviews as described by Hennig-Thurau and Walsh (2003)2. A 20-item survey was administered to a sample of 56 Dutch respondents. The results indicate that income and education do have an effect on some of the motives. It has been found that more highly educated individuals tend to be less influenced by eWOM, and people with a lower income tend to use eWOM particularly for dissonance reduction. A Systematic Review, Analysis, and Evaluation of Research Articles in the Cornell Hospitality Quarterly

This paper describes a review of articles published in the Cornell Hospitality Quarterly in the period 2008 to 2011. A content analysis approach was used to analyze 133 research articles making original contributions to the development of knowledge.
