Palladium-catalyzed coupling of N-tosylhydrazones and β-bromostyrene derivatives: new approach to 2H-chromenes.

2H-Chromene is an important structural motif that exists in natural products and non-natural compounds possessing interesting biological activities. In this investigation, a highly efficient approach toward 2H-chromenes has been developed based on palladium-catalyzed coupling of N-tosylhydrazones and β-bromostyrenes. The mechanism of this reaction is proposed that involves the formation of vinyl palladium by carbene migratory insertion and the intramolecular nucleophilic substitution.

Rational modifications on champion porphyrin dye using different electron-withdrawing moieties toward high performance dye-sensitized solar cells.

Ten porphyrin sensitizers with different electron-withdrawing groups derived from the best sensitizer SM315 were investigated by means of the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations. To this end, major factors affecting the performance of the cell, including light harvesting, electron injection, dye regeneration, and conduction band energy shift are taken into consideration. Especially, the calculated distance (r) from the electron recapture center to the semiconductor surface is used to probe the charge recombination process. In addition, considering the complexity of the porphyrin sensitizers' absorption, the maximum short circuit current density (J(max)sc) is determined for investigating the light harvesting ability quantitatively. We find that when compared to SM315 with 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole, 1 with naphtho[1,2-c:5,6-c]bis[1,2,5]thiadiazole shows better performance due to both larger J(max)sc and r, and 7 with diketopyrrolopyrrole could also be a promising candidate due to the much larger J(max)sc and comparable r.

Enhanced photoelectrochemical performance by synthesizing CdS decorated reduced TiO2 nanotube arrays.

The efficient utilization of solar spectrum and photo-induced charge transport are critical aspects in improving the light conversion efficiency of solar cells and hydrogen generation. In this work, reduced TiO2 nanotube arrays with CdS decoration were fabricated through the simple cathodic polarization of annealed TiO2 nanotube arrays followed by the chemical deposition of CdS nanoparticles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the successful fabrication of the target material. UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectra showed a Burstein-Moss shift for reduced TiO2 NTs and a red shift of the absorption edge towards ca. 563 nm for CdS-decorated R-TiO2 NTs. Cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectra together demonstrate the decreased charge transport resistance for reduced TiO2 NTs. Under the excitation of monochromatic light at 420 nm, the proposed CdS-decorated reduced TiO2 NTs exhibit the maximum IPCE value of 30.12% in 1 M Na2SO3 electrolyte, which is almost twice higher than that achieved on CdS-decorated pristine TiO2 NTs. Therefore, the results here highlight the significance of charge transport in the light conversion process. The enhanced charge transport properties are ascribed to the increased number of electrons, which is brought about by the lattice oxygen vacancies (Ti(3+)) during the cathodic polarization.

Anisotropically structured magnetic aerogel monoliths.

Texturing of magnetic ceramics and composites by aligning and fixing of colloidal particles in a magnetic field is a powerful strategy to induce anisotropic chemical, physical and especially mechanical properties into bulk materials. If porosity could be introduced, anisotropically structured magnetic materials would be the perfect supports for magnetic separations in biotechnology or for magnetic field-assisted chemical reactions. Aerogels, combining high porosity with nanoscale structural features, offer an exceptionally large surface area, but they are difficult to magnetically texture. Here we present the preparation of anatase-magnetite aerogel monoliths via the assembly of preformed nanocrystallites. Different approaches are proposed to produce macroscopic bodies with gradient-like magnetic segmentation or with strongly anisotropic magnetic texture.

Two Strandberg-type organophosphomolybdates: synthesis, crystal structures and catalytic properties.

Two novel Strandberg-type organophosphomolybdate hybrid compounds [(Cu(H2O))2(μ-bipy)2(C6H5PO3)2Mo5O15]n (1) and [(Cu(H2O)2)2(μ-bipy)(C6H5PO3)2Mo5O15]n (2) (bipy = 4,4'-bipyridyl) were prepared under mild hydrothermal conditions and structurally characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopic methods. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that compounds 1 and 2 are polyoxometalate-based Cu-coordination polymers with a three-dimensional framework. In 1, the Cu(2+) ions not only link [(C6H5PO3)2Mo5O15](4-) (abbreviated as {(C6H5P)2Mo5}) polyanions, but also act as connectors of bipy ligands to produce two symmetrical 1-D chains, all 1-D chains are further held together by polyanions to generate a 3-D network. In 2, each {(C6H5P)2Mo5} polyanion acting as a hexadentate ligand links four Cu(II)-bipy/H2O units, forming 2-D plane structures, which are further bridged by Cu(II)-bipy-Cu(II) fragments to generate a 3-D network. Their fluorescence properties and catalytic properties for the synthesis of cyclohexanone ethylene ketal were also investigated.

Decarboxylative allylations of ester enolate equivalents.

A variety of ester enolate equivalents are generated in situ and undergo α-allylation in high yields via palladium-catalyzed decarboxylative allylation. The transformations are complete within very short reaction times under ambient conditions. Synthesis of α-allylated acyl derivatives provides access to other carboxylic acid and alcohol derivatives via acyl group substitution or reduction.

Preparation of indium nitronates and their Henry reactions.

Indium nitronates were readily prepared from commercially available nitroalkanes by transmetallation of the corresponding lithium nitronates with indium salts. The Henry reaction of this indium organometallics with aldehydes afforded β-nitroalkanols in moderate to high yields. The use of chiral sugar aldehydes furnished the corresponding carbohydrate-derived β-nitroalkanols with excellent stereoselectivity.
