Spiritual health assessment among MBBS students of Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Burla, Sambalpur, Odisha, India

Background: Spiritual health is a state which not only increases the meaning of life but also increases mental satisfaction and gist in life. It improves the verbal communication between physician and patients, which reflects future patient care by strengthening their relationship. Aims and Objectives: (1) The present study was planned to assess the spiritual health status of undergraduate medical students of Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Burla, by use of the Spiritual Health Assessment Scale (SHAS) and coping orientation for problem experiences (COPE) score and (2) to find the association between sociodemographic variables and spiritual health status of the students. Materials and Methods: For this study, 750 undergraduate students of either sex were recruited between August 2023 and November 2023. The data were collected through “sociodemographic characteristic questionnaire’s,” “SHAS,” and “cope score.” Results: In our study, most of the students were female, i.e., 56.94%. Majority of students were having mean SHA score (96.83 ± 4.72). Regarding copping score, we found that 287 students have scored high score between 42 and 46 (38.26%). A significant association was found between SHAS and type of family (P = 0.001), ritual gathering (P = 0.000), father’s education level (P = 0.009), and mother’s education level (P = 0.003) at P < 0.05. Conclusion: This study concludes that the spiritual health is directly and indirectly associated with lifestyle modification of the MBBS students which help very easily to overcome from stress and anxiety.

Coping as a Mediator between Attachment and Depressive Symptomatology Either in Pregnancy or in the Early Postpartum Period: A Structural Equation Modelling Approach.

Peripartum depression (PPD) is a major complication of pregnancy, and numerous risk factors have been associated with its onset, including dysfunctional coping strategies and insecure attachment styles, both during pregnancy and postpartum. The aim of our study was to investigate the role of coping strategies in mediating the relationship between women's attachment style and depressive symptomatology in pregnancy and one week after giving birth in a large sample of women (N = 1664). Our hypothesis was that the relationship between anxious and avoidant attachment and depressive symptomatology would be mediated by use of maladaptive coping strategies. The assessment instruments were Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), Brief Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences (COPE), and Experiences in Close Relationship Scale (ECR). The results indicated that the effect of insecure attachment styles (anxious and avoidant attachment) on antepartum depressive symptomatology was partially mediated by dysfunctional coping styles. Anxious attachment also has an indirect significant effect on postpartum depressive symptomatology through emotional coping; however, avoidant attachment does not seem to be significantly related to postpartum depressive symptoms. Our findings revealed that not only is it important to consider attachment in understanding peripartum depressive symptomatology, but also that coping plays an important role in these relationships. These findings would help a preventive coping-based intervention strategy to enhance the capacity of women with insecure attachment styles to use more adaptive coping during and after pregnancy.

EVALUATION OF STRESS AND COPING STRATEGIES ADOPTED BY NURSING STUDENTS

The prospective study was conducted in Nishtar Medical Hospital from November 2022 to January 2023 to evaluate stress levels and coping strategies adopted by government hospital nursing students. The study was conducted with a total of 54 participants. Three tools were used to gather data, including a questionnaire, Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) and Adolescent Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences (ACOPE). Results showed that according to PSS, 21 %(11) students reported mild stress, 69% (38) reported moderate levels of stress, and 10% (5) reported a severe level of stress. The most commonly used strategies were practicing breathing or muscle relaxation technique (42%), followed by having a hobby (40%) and meditation (39%). Moreover, it was also observed that some students (31%) pray to manage their stress. Most nursing students suffer moderate stress due to workload, patient care, peer pressure, and academic stressors. Faculty members should know students' stress levels and concentrate on providing a program to help them manage it.

The influence of parents, peer relationships and happiness on adolescents coping with problem experiences

It is considered that parents and peer relationships, rating of self - perception and that of the environment, and happiness usually have an impact on adolescents’ coping with problem experiences. The aim of the present study is to assess how certain external factors such as relationships with parents and peers and certain internal factors like one’s perception of self and of the environment and happiness in an adolescent’s life influence his coping styles. The study also aims at bringing out differences in gender. The independent variables in this study include adolescents’ relationship with parents, with peers, self – rating of self and environment, happiness and gender. Short report: assessment of coping strategies in patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) and multiple sclerosis

ABSTRACT Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) and multiple sclerosis (MS) are disabling neurological diseases with significant emotional distresses. To better deal with these diseases, patients need to adopt coping strategies. Identifying coping strategies is important in our understanding of the disease burden and management. However, no one to the best of our knowledge has studied coping strategies in NMOSD patients worldwide. We performed this study to evaluate coping strategies in NMOSD and MS patients compared to healthy controls. We assessed coping strategies using Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences (COPE) inventory. Demographic and clinical characteristics were gathered as well. Thirty NMOSD patients, 76 MS patients, and 50 healthy controls were recruited. NMOSD and MS patients adopted acceptance and behavioral disengagement strategies more often compared to healthy control. Furthermore, NMOSD cases were more prone to using mental disengagement strategy. Both NMOSD and MS cases were less prone to substance use. In NMOSD group, patients with basic education had higher scores of focus on and venting emotions compared to those with advance education. No relationship between coping strategies and demographic and clinical characteristics was observed. We found almost similar patterns of coping in NMOSD and MS. NMOSD patients showed utilization of maladaptive coping strategies with more frequent use of mental and behavioral disengagement. We suggest a multidisciplinary approach to manage these patients.

Coping, Mood, Quality of Life, and Outcomes in Recipients of Left Ventricular Assist Devices: A Cluster Analysis.

Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are increasingly used for temporary circulatory support until transplant or as destination therapy for patients with end-stage heart failure. Understanding patients' attitudes and resources is crucial to support them. Sixty-one LVAD recipients (55 [10] years, 10% women, 15% destination therapy) participating in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) postimplant underwent assessment of coping styles (Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences), quality of life (Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form 36, Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire), and mood (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale). Cluster analysis identified two homogeneous groups: C1 (n = 18) patients had higher anxiety (9.6 [5.0] versus 4.0 [2.7], p < .001), depression (10 [3.0] versus 4 [2.7], p < .001), and avoidant coping (29 [5.2] versus 21.2 [3.8], p < .001) scores and worse quality of life (Short-Form 36 of the Medical Outcomes Study Physical Component Scale 31 [5.3] versus 35.6 [6.9], p < .001; Mental Component Scale 34.3 [6.8] versus 50.3 [8], p < .001; MLHFQ physical 26 [7.2] versus 13.9 [8.2], p < .001; emotional 17.7 [3.4] versus 3.86 [3.2], p < .001) than C2 participants (n = 43). During 31 (15-54) months, 20 patients (33%) died. By Cox multivariable analysis, after adjustment for age, sex, Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support level at surgery, and meters walked during 6 minutes at CR discharge, C1 was associated with mortality (hazard ratio = 2.858; 95% confidence interval = 1.102-7.408, p = .031; model χ = 7.286, df = 5, p = .20). Survival was 44% in C1 and 77% in C2 (log-rank p = .033). Among patients discharged from CR after LVAD implant, one third show a profile characterized by worse perceived quality of life, mood disorders, and dysfunctional coping that is associated with long-term mortality, and these factors are potential targets for post-LVAD intensive support.

Contextual Effect of Place 0f Birth Delivery on Depression in Karanganyar, Central Java

Background: Postpartum depression is a common mental health problem that usually occurs in women after childbirth. According to WHO, there are 377 million people in depression worldwide. In Indonesia, the prevalence of depression sufferers is 3.7%, and those who experience anxiety are 3.3%. Postpartum depression that is not immediately treated can cause an impact in nursing, namely communication and response is reduced, the existence of negative interactions, the existence of hostility, the existence of impaired competence. This study aimed to analyze the determinants of postpartum depression at the individual level and the contextual effect of place of birth delivery. Subjects and Method: This was a cross sectional study conducted in Karanganyar, Central Java, from November to December 2018. A sample of 200 postpartum mothers was selected by random sampling. The dependent variable was postpartum depression. The independent variables were stress level, work, income, education, pregnancy status, parity, coping strategy, and labor compli­cation, husband support. Data on depression were measured by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Data on stress were measured by Depression Anxiety Stress Scale 42 (DASS 42). Data on coping mechanism were measured by Brief Cope (Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences). The other data were collected by questionnaire and analyzed by a multilevel logistic regression. Results : Postpartum depression was influenced by husband support (b = -2.42; 95% CI= -4.73 to -0.12; p= 0.039), employment (b = -3.43; 95% CI = -5.51 to -1.35; p<0.001), income (b = -3.32; 95% CI= -6.18 to -0.46; p= 0.023), education (b= -2.69; 95% CI = -4.83 to -0.55; p= 0.014), pregnancy status (b= -3.16; 95% CI= -5.79 to - 0.54; p= 0.018), parity (b = -2.92; 95% CI = -5.14 to -0.71; p= 0.010), coping strategies (b= -2.38; 95% CI= -4.46 to -0.21; p= 0.032), complication (b = 3.39; 95% CI= 0.79 to 5.98; p= 0.011), and stress level (b= 2.68; 95 % CI= 0.35 to 5.12; p= 0.024). There was a contextual effect of place of birth delivery on postpartum depression (ICC= 20.15%). Conclusions: Postpartum depression is influenced by husband support, employment, income, education, pregnancy status, parity, coping strategies, complication, and stress level. Facing Interpersonal Violence: Identifying the Coping Profile of Poly-Victimized Resilient Adolescents.

Coping strategies are factors that mediate the relationship between interpersonal victimizations and psychological maladjustment. The objectives are as follows: (a) to establish the coping profile of adolescents according to the number of reported interpersonal victimizations; (b) to identify the most victimized adolescents (poly-victims), detecting those with psychological symptoms (nonresilient poly-victims) and those without psychological symptoms (resilient poly-victims), and then to examine any differences in coping strategies between the two groups; (c) to determine the accumulative effect of victimizations on mental health; and (d) to test the mediating role of both approach and avoidance coping between lifetime interpersonal victimizations and symptoms. Participants were 918 community Spanish adolescents (62.7% girls) aged between 14 and 18 years. Measures used were Youth Self-Report, Juvenile Victimization Questionnaire, and Adolescent Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences. The following results were reported: (a) The most victimized adolescents used to a greater degree avoidance coping strategies than nonvictimized adolescents. (b) Resilient poly-victimized adolescents were more likely to seek family support and tended to use more positive reappraisal than nonresilient poly-victimized adolescents. (c) A clear cumulative effect of victimizations on mental health was observed: 45% of the most victimized adolescents (poly-victims) reached clinical range on Youth Self-Report in front of 2% of nonvictimized adolescents. (d) Avoidance coping and more specifically Escaping and Venting feelings strategies played a mediating role between interpersonal victimizations and psychological symptoms. Approach coping had no mediating role, except for Positive reappraisal in girls. In conclusion, the possibility of identifying the coping profile of victimized adolescents may have clinical implications in terms of both prevention and intervention.

An Insight into Spiritual Health and Coping Tactics among Dental Students; A Gain or Blight: A Cross-sectional Study.

Spiritual health is the youngest dimension of health which affects the coping skills of the individual and may help the dental students who are the caregivers of the future, to overcome crisis situation with time. To measure the association between spiritual health and coping skills among the dental students of private dental college. A questionnaire based cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the spiritual health status using Spiritual Health Assessment Scale (SHAS) and coping skills using Adolescent Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences (ACOPE) scale among the 389 dental students of different academic years in a private dental college. The data obtained was subjected to descriptive statistics and means were compared using independent t-test and one-way ANOVA. The mean age of the study participants was 22.8±3.17 years. Majority of the students had fair spiritual health score (74.55%). Of the coping strategies dimension, highest mean score was observed in seeking diversions (3.60±1.40) and the least mean score was observed in engaging in demanding activities (2.67±1.41). Statistically significant association was seen between dimension of coping behaviour and spiritual health (p≤ 0.05). The present study highlights that spiritual health plays a central role and influences the coping strategies in human health. The spiritual health can continuously compensate with other health like mental, physical and social well-being.

Improving education and coping of scoliosis patients undergoing surgery, and their families, using e-health.

PurposeHealthcare providers have limited time to spend with scoliosis patients who are considering surgery and their families. The purpose of this study was to evaluate an e-health strategy to increase knowledge and coping in patients with scoliosis who are surgical candidates and their families.MethodsWe enrolled patients with scoliosis who were candidates for surgery and their families. Patients and their families completed the scoliosis knowledge questionnaire, meaning of illness questionnaire, social support and coping questionnaires before and after access to a comprehensive evidence-based scoliosis website (http://www.aboutkidshealth.ca/scoliosis).ResultsSeventy-four patients and 71 parents completed the evaluation. While both patients and parents improved their knowledge of scoliosis (p = 0.001 and p = 0.003, respectively), the scores of patients were consistently lower than those of the parents both before and after website use (p = 0.0001). Only parents demonstrated a change in the meaning of illness questionnaire, with a small increase in the negative attitude towards illness and a small decrease in the positive attitude towards illness (p = 0002 and p = 0.01, respectively). Of the 12 coping methods examined on the Adolescent Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences (A-COPE) instrument, patients were slightly more likely than parents to use relaxing and solving family problems as tools to cope following website access (p = 0.02 and p = 0.09, respectively). Parents demonstrated no significant changes in the four methods of coping on the Coping Health Inventory for Parents (CHIP) after website exposure. While the majority of patients and parents reported receiving sufficient support, over half of the patients indicated a need for more support in social participation.ConclusionAn evidence-based website increased the knowledge of patients and parents but simply providing access to the website had minimal impact on their coping and perceptions of social support. The website, however, provides users with the opportunity to absorb vital information about scoliosis across several media.

Coping strategies for postpartum depression: a multi-centric study of 1626 women

The transition to motherhood is stressful as it requires several important changes in family dynamics, finances, and working life, along with physical and psychological adjustments. This study aimed at determining whether some forms of coping might predict postpartum depressive symptomatology. A total of 1626 pregnant women participated in a multi-centric longitudinal study. Different evaluations were performed 8 and 32weeks after delivery. Depression was assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and the structured Diagnostic Interview for Genetic Studies (DIGS). The brief Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences (COPE) scale was used to measure coping strategies 2-3days postpartum. Some coping strategies differentiate between women with and without postpartum depression. A logistic regression analysis was used to explore the relationships between the predictors of coping strategies and major depression (according to DSM-IV criteria). In this model, the predictor variables during the first 32weeks were self-distraction (OR 1.18, 95% CI 1.04-1.33), substance use (OR 0.58, 95% CI 0.35-0.97), and self-blame (OR 1.18, 95% CI 1.04-1.34). In healthy women with no psychiatric history, some passive coping strategies, both cognitive and behavioral, are predictors of depressive symptoms and postpartum depression and help differentiate between patients with and without depression.

Perceived Stress in Multiple Sclerosis

Stressful life events are associated with worsening neurological symptoms and decreased quality of life in multiple sclerosis (MS). Mindful consciousness can alter the impact of stressful events and has potential to improve health outcomes in MS. This study evaluated the relationship between trait mindfulness and perceived stress, coping, and resilience in people with MS. Quality of life was assessed as a secondary outcome. One hundred nineteen people with confirmed MS completed the Five-Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire, Perceived Stress Scale, Brief Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and Medical Outcome Study Short Form-36. Greater trait mindfulness was significantly associated with decreased psychological stress, better coping skills, increased resilience, and higher quality of life. After investigators controlled for confounders, mindfulness accounted for 25% of the variation in perceived stress scores and 44% of the variation in resilience scores. Results support further investigation of mindfulness training to enhance psychological resilience and improve well-being for those living with MS.

Coping with Stress and Types of Burnout: Explanatory Power of Different Coping Strategies

BackgroundBurnout occurs when professionals use ineffective coping strategies to try to protect themselves from work-related stress. The dimensions of ‘overload’, ‘lack of development’ and ‘neglect’, belonging to the ‘frenetic’, ‘under-challenged’ and ‘worn-out’ subtypes, respectively, comprise a brief typological definition of burnout. The aim of the present study was to estimate the explanatory power of the different coping strategies on the development of burnout subtypes.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional survey with a random sample of university employees, stratified by occupation (n = 429). Multivariate linear regression models were constructed between the ‘Burnout Clinical Subtypes Questionnaire’, with its three dimensions –overload, lack of development and neglect– as dependent variables, and the ‘Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences’, with its fifteen dimensions, as independent variables. Adjusted multiple determination coefficients and beta coefficients were calculated to evaluate and compare the explanatory capacity of the different coping strategies.ResultsThe ‘Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences’ subscales together explained 15% of the ‘overload’ (p<0.001), 9% of the ‘lack of development’ (p<0.001), and 21% of the ‘neglect’ (p<0.001). ‘Overload’ was mainly explained by ‘venting of emotions’ (Beta = 0.34; p<0.001); ‘lack of development’ by ‘cognitive avoidance’ (Beta = 0.21; p<0.001); and ‘neglect’ by ‘behavioural disengagement’ (Beta = 0.40; p<0.001). Other interesting associations were observed.ConclusionsThese findings further our understanding of the way in which the effectiveness of interventions for burnout may be improved, by influencing new treatments and preventive programmes using features of the strategies for handling stress in the workplace.

Job Stress Management in Nurses

An observational study, including 103 nurses of 2 hospitals in Sanandaj-Iran in 2007, carried out to determine how much nurses coped with their stress and to define the factors affecting stress management. They responded to questionnaires based on Adolescent Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences (A-COPE) with 3-Likert-scale responses. Stress management was positive in 67.9% and negative in 38.8% of nurses. This study showed managing stress depends not only to one's personality, but also to the work environment. Therefore, beside teaching nurses proper methods of stress management to strengthen their coping resources, attempts should be done to arrange work environments how to reduce sources of stress.

Factor Structure of the Adolescent Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences in Spanish Adolescents

The present study aimed to identify the best structure of the Adolescent Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences when applied to Spanish adolescents. A confirmatory factor analysis of five previous factor structures was conducted. As the data did not fit previous factor models, two exploratory factor analyses (first- and second-order) were carried out to identify the structure for Spanish adolescents and to analyse its criterion validity in relation to mental health, which was assessed by means of the Youth Self-Report. A first-wave sample of 1,152 secondary education pupils (645 boys, 56%; 507 girls, 44%; M age = 14.4 yr., SD = 1.4) was involved in the confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses. A second-wave sample of = 374 secondary education pupils (188 boys, 50.5%; 186 girls, 49.5%; M age = 15.4 yr., SD = 1.1) was used to assess criterion validity. The results yielded eight first-order factors with Cronbach's alpha ranging from .63 to .79, and two second-order factors that replicated the Approach and Avoidance focus of coping. The paper discusses both the content of the extracted factors and mental health issues.

2729 – Coping strategies in patients with boxer's fracture

Objective The term boxer's fracture refers fifth metacarpal neck fracture. These people have problem with anger management and may be incapable of problem solving. In this study, it was aimed to determine their coping behavior and psychological symptoms and their relations with coping behaviors in patients with boxer's fracture. Method 36 male patients with diagnosis of fifth metacarpal neck fracture and 36 healthy male control subjects were included in study. Groups were evaluated with “Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences” (COPE) scale and Symptom Check List- 90 (SCL-90). Results “Emotion-focused” coping strategies like “denial”, “substance abuse”, “use of emotional social support” and “avoidance” were seen to be used more often by patient group. In SCL-90 symptom check-list “obsessive-compulsive symptoms,” “interpersonal sensitivity”, “anxiety”, “anger-hostility” sub-groups were significantly different in patient group than control group. Conclusion Coping strategies are divided in two categories as problem-focused and emotion-focused. The first targets main source of the problem. And latter targets the emotional impact caused by the main source. This may be only realistic option when the source of stress is outside the person's control. Sense of control directly reduces psychological disturbance. Feeling like you have control over smaller aspects of life could lead to a greater sense of overall control. In these patients, it can be predicted that to punch the wall can increase “sense of control”. It is evaluated that the higher scores of “obsessivecompulsive symptoms” subscale of SCL-90 symptom check-list in patient group when compared with control group is consistent with this result.

The Ways in Which Adolescents Cope and their Relationship to Age, Gender and Specific Religious Variables

This study investigated the roles of age, gender, the importance of religion/spirituality, attending church activities and frequency of prayer on the types of adolescents’ coping strategies. Participants were drawn from ten public high schools. Data on coping strategies, personal variables and religiosity and spirituality were collected using the Adolescent Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences (A-COPE) coping inventory. Scheffé posthoc tests were used to evaluate associations between the coping strategies used by adolescents and the identified personal and faith-oriented variables. Gender and age explained some differences in types of coping strategies preferred. Specifically, females used the developing social support coping strategy more than males; older adolescents used the avoiding problems coping strategy more than younger adolescents. Adolescents for whom religion/spirituality is of lesser importance, obtained a significantly higher mean score for the avoiding problems subscale. Both personal variables (age and gender) as well as one of the faith-oriented variables (importance of religion) were identified as important role players in using developing social support and avoiding problems as coping strategies by adolescents.

Fatores de stress e estratégias de coping entre adolescentes no 12º ano de escolaridade

Este trabalho apresenta um estudo realizado com 341 finalistas do ensino secundário do Norte de Portugal, visando à exploração do tipo e níveis de stress experienciados pelos alunos, e estratégias de coping mais frequentemente utilizadas. Os dados - recolhidos por meio do Inventário de Fatores de Stress (12º ano) e do Inventário de Estratégias de Coping dos Adolescentes face a Experiências Problemáticas - revelam níveis de stress medianos, destacando-se a área acadêmica como a de maior dificuldade. A "Procura de apoio fora da família "; a "Resolução ativa dos problemas "e a "Distração e relativização da situação "surgem como as estratégias de coping mais frequentes. The Impacts of the “Immune of Life” for Teens Module Application on the Coping Behaviors and Mental Health of Early Adolescents

This quasi-experimental research is the subsequent part of the Health Promotion for Early Adolescents Project, which focuses on the training of schoolteachers in using the module Immune of Life for Teens, which was developed in 1999, for evaluating its impact. The module consists of a manual and a VDO cassette display of a story of a teenager who has difficulty adjusting to life changes. The program aimed at improving the coping skills and psychological health or mental health of junior high school students. Schoolteachers from 13 schools participated nationwide as part of an experimental group and received training in the use of the module in their schools with students in Grades 7-9. The control group was composed of 3 schools that did not apply the module. Each school performed the pretest and posttest 1 month after the module's application. The total number of the students in the study was 1,580. There were 445 students in the control group, 474 in the experimental I group (intensive training) group, and 661 in the experimental II group (nonintensive group). The instruments used to evaluate impact were the following: (1) Young Adult Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences, which was developed by Patterson, McCubbin, and Grochowski in 1983, and the (2) Thai Mental Health Questionnaire, a 70-item self-administered questionnaire developed by Pattrayuwat in 1999 to assess mental health status. The findings reveal that both experimental groups had better coping behaviors than the control group when using pretest scores as covariates (experimental I group: F = 9.425, p < .01; experimental II group: F = 22.446, p < .001) 1 month after the module was implemented. They also show that both experimental groups had better mental health than the control group when using pretest scores as covariates (experimental I group: F = 6.034, p < .05; experimental II group: F = 6.596, p < .001) 1 month after the module was implemented. The study confirmed the impact of the Immune of Life for Teens module on better coping behaviors and better mental health status among the subjects after it was implemented by their teachers. Thus, for further use of the module, intensive training for schoolteachers is recommended for the health promotion of early adolescents.
