Nonhalogenated Solvent-Processed Efficient Ternary All-Polymer Solar Cells Enabled by the Introduction of a Naphthyloxy Group into the Side Chain of Polymer Donors.

Conjugated polymer donors are crucial for enhancing the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) in all-polymer solar cells (All-PSCs) in nonhalogenated solvents. In this work, three wide-band-gap polymer donors (Sil-D1, Ph-Sil-D1, and Nap-Sil-D1) based on dithienobenzothiadiazole (DTBT) and benzodithiophene (BDT) donor moieties optimized by side chain engineering were designed and synthesized. Alkyl (Sil-D1), phenyloxy (Ph-Sil-D1), and naphthyloxy (Nap-Sil-D1) alkyl siloxane side chain units were incorporated into these polymer donors, respectively. Notably, the Nap-Sil-D1 polymer donor had a greater conjugation length, π-electron delocalization, and improved dipole moment. The deepest highest occupied molecular orbital level of Nap-Sil-D1, with a high absorption coefficient, showed better aggregation properties. In addition, reduced bimolecular recombination and trap-state density generated a high charge transfer to cause a significant enhancement of open-circuit voltage, current density, and fill factor values of 0.94 V, 25.5 mA/cm2, and 70.4%, respectively, for the Nap-Sil-D1-blended All-PSC ternary device (PM6:Nap-Sil-D1:PY-IT), with the highest PCE of 16.8% in the o-xylene solvent, compared to other polymers (Sil-D1 and Ph-Sil-D1) with PCEs of 15.5 and 16.2%. As a result, this optimized device architecture was found to be the most promising as a nonhalogenated solvent processed in additive-free ternary All-PSCs with good stability.

Molybdenum-Oxide-Modified PEDOT:PSS as Efficient Hole Transport Layer in Perovskite Solar Cells

Over the last ten years, there has been a remarkable enhancement in the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), with poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiohene):poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) emerging as a prevalent choice for the hole transport layer (HTL). Nevertheless, the evolution of the widely utilized PEDOT:PSS HTL has not kept pace with the swift advancements in PSC technology, attributed to its suboptimal electrical conductivity, acidic nature, and inadequate electron-blocking performance. This study presents a novel approach to enhance the HTL by introducing molybdenum oxide (MoO3) into the PEDOT:PSS, leveraging the conductivity and solution processing compatibility of MoO3. Two methods for MoO3 integration were explored: an ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate (AMT) precursor and the direct addition of MoO3 nanoparticles. The carrier dynamics of PSCs modified by MoO3 are significantly optimized. Therefore, the PCE of the device modified by AMT and molybdenum oxide is increased to 18.23 and 19.64%, respectively, and the stability of the device is also improved. This study emphasizes the potential of MoO3 in contributing to the development of more efficient and stable PSCs.

Air-Processed Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells With Full Lifecycle Management.

Despite the outstanding power conversion efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) realized over the years, the entire lifecycle from preparation and operation to discarding of PSCs still needs to be carefully considered when it faces the upcoming large-scale production and deployment. In this study, bio-derived chitin-based polymers are employed to realize the full lifecycle regulation of air-processed PSCs by forming multiple coordinated and hydrogen bonds to stabilize the lead iodide and organic salt precursor inks, accelerating the solid-liquid reaction and crystallization of two-step deposition process, then achieving the high crystalline and oriented perovskites with less notorious charge defects in the open air. The air-prepared PSCs exhibit a decent efficiency of 25.18% with high preparation reproducibility and improved operational stability toward the harsh environment and mechanical stress stimuli. The modified PSCs display negligible fatigue behavior with keeping 92% of its initial efficiency after operating for 32 diurnal cycles (ISOS-LC-1 protocol). Meanwhile, closed-loop lead management of end-of-life PSCs including suppression of lead leakage, toxicity evaluation of broken devices, and recycling of lead iodide components are comprehensively investigated. This work sheds light on a promising avenue to realize the entire lifecycle regulation of air-processed efficient and stable PSCs.

Sublimation and Recrystallization of CsPbBr3 Constructing a Perovskite-Carbon Interface to Facilitate Hole Transfer in Printable All-Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells.

All-inorganic perovskite solar cells (APSCs) are a promising photovoltaic technology due to their unique physical and optical properties. For printable all-inorganic perovskite solar cells, the key factors limiting their photoelectric conversion performance are the crystallization of perovskite and the hole collection capability at the perovskite-carbon interface. In this study, leveraging the high-temperature tolerance of CsPbBr3 perovskite, the sublimation and recrystallization processes were controlled, significantly improving the crystalline quality of the perovskite and suppressing the generation of the nonphotovoltaic CsPb2Br5 phase. Furthermore, a continuous distribution of high-quality CsPbBr3 crystals was achieved at the interface between the carbon electrode and the zirconium oxide layer, ensuring efficient collection of photogenerated holes. The photoelectric conversion efficiency of the printable mesoscopic all-inorganic perovskite solar cell was increased from 5.04 to 8.34% (with a record value of 10.04%) and achieved an ultrahigh open-circuit voltage of 1.54 V due to the significant improvement in the crystal quality of CsPbBr3. This study proposes a novel strategy to enhance the photovoltaic conversion performance of carbon-based all-inorganic perovskite solar cells by suppressing the presence of nonphotovoltaic phases.

Designing a Highly Crystalline Polymer Donor with Alkylsilyl and Fluorine Substitution to Achieve Efficient Ternary Organic Solar Cells.

Adopting a ternary strategy is an effective approach to enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) in organic solar cells (OSCs). Previous research on highly efficient ternary systems has predominantly focused on those based on highly crystalline dual small molecule acceptors. However, limited attention has been given to ternary systems utilizing dual polymer donors. Herein, by incorporating the fluorine and alkylsilyl substitution, a new polymer donor named PX1 is developed, which demonstrates strong crystallinity and excellent miscibility with polymer PM6. Moreover, PX1 broadens and enhances the absorption properties of the PM6:L8-BO blends, and its molecular orbital energy level is situated between those of PM6 and L8-BO, highlighting its suitability as a third component. Introducing 20% PX1 into the PM6:L8-BO system resulted in a high PCE of 18.82%. PX1 effectively suppresses charge recombination and reduces energy losses, while also serving as a morphology modulator that enhances the crystallization and improves the molecular packing order of the active layer by shortening the π-π stacking distance and extending crystalline coherence length. These factors collectively contribute to the performance improvements in ternary devices. This study demonstrates that employing a dual polymer donor strategy is a promising approach for achieving high-performance ternary OSCs.

Generation and Clearance of Superoxide Radicals at Buried Interfaces of Perovskites with Different Crystal Structures.

One of the most notorious issues with classic perovskite (MAPbI3) is its rapid degradation caused by generating superoxide radicals (O2 •-) on its surface under light and oxygen environments (light/O2). The differences in O2 •- generation rate and tolerance to O2 •- among perovskite with different structures are pending. For the first time it is validated through solid-electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) that MAPbI3 and Cs0.175FA0.75MA0.075PbI3 (PVSK) crystals can generate O2 •- in an air atmosphere. The rapid degradation of perovskite buried interfaces caused by O2 •- dominates the nonexposed air aging process of SnO2-based perovskite film, and the degradation rate of MAPbI3 film is faster than that of PVSK film. The fullerene pyridine derivatives (C60OPD), which function as a buffer layer between SnO2 and PVSK to scavenge O2 •- and prevent degradation at the buried interface of the PVSK film, reduce the density of defect states, and accelerate the transmission of photogenerated electrons. The photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) optimizes with C60OPD increased from 21.15% to 23.11% while significantly improving the stability in light/O2. This work reveals the hidden degradation of perovskite-buried interfaces caused by O2 •- and explores efficient ways for perovskite to resist O2 •-.

High efficiency homojunction tandem organic solar cells with all solution processable interconnect layer

In the field of organic photovoltaics, the power conversion efficiency of single junction solar cells continues to improve. However, tandem organic solar cells are poised to push the efficiency limits even further and offer a promising avenue for improving the performance of organic photovoltaic devices. This study reports the development of an all-solution processed interconnecting layer (ICL) based on ZnO NPs:PEI/PEI/PEDOT:PSS/2PACz for tandem solar cells. The PM6:BTP-eC9 active layer material was adjusted for its donor-to-acceptor (D/A) ratio and film thickness as the front and back sub-cells. The ICL exhibits favorable mechanical, electrical and optical properties. Through multidimensional modulation, the front and rear sub-cells have been optimized to obtain highly efficient homojunction tandem solar cells. The tandem solar cell has a structure of indium tin oxide (ITO)/PEDOT:PSS/2PACz/active layer/ICL/active layer/PNDIT-F3N/Ag. This optimization resulted in a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.9 %, which is the highest reported efficiency for homojunction tandem organic solar cells to date. Our research demonstrates that the PCE of homojunction tandem cells can be significantly improved by careful design of the interconnecting layers and optimization of the donor-to-acceptor (D/A) ratio. This strategy may provide guidance for further improvements in homojunction tandem cells.

Heterojunction Organic Solar Cells with Efficient Charge Mobility and Separation Capabilities Studied by DFT.

The properties of the active layer materials play a decisive role in determining the power conversion efficiency of organic solar cells (OSCs). Chlorophyll and its derivatives are abundant and environmentally friendly functional organic molecular materials. Using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), we have calculated the absorption spectra and their excited state properties based on optimized ground state structures. It was found that bacteriochlorin exhibits superior structural properties, a smaller energy gap and hole reorganization energy, redshifted absorption spectra, and higher hole mobility compared to the donor D18. This suggests that bacteriochlorin exhibits superior donor properties. Comparative studies between o-AT-2Cl and m-AT-2Cl showed that o-AT-2Cl had superior acceptor properties, implying that differences in substitution positions can influence the physicochemical properties of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs). Subsequently, six bulk heterojunctions (BHJs) were constructed by combining three donors with nonfused ring electron acceptors, o-AT-2Cl and m-AT-2Cl. The bacteriochlorin-based BHJs performed well among them, with BChl3/o-AT-2Cl and BChl4/o-AT-2Cl having the largest interfacial charge separation rate. The results suggested that BHJs composed of bacteriochlorin and NFAs can improve OSCs' photovoltaic performance, providing a feasible scheme for designing efficient OSCs.

Nonfullerene Acceptors Bearing Spiro-Substituted Bithiophene Units in Organic Solar Cells: Tuning the Frontier Molecular Orbital Distribution to Reduce Exciton Binding Energy.

The development of nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs), represented by ITIC, has contributed to improving the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs). Although tuning the electronic structures to reduce the exciton binding energy (Eb) is considered to promote photocharge generation, a rational molecular design for NFAs has not been established. In this study, we designed and developed two ITIC-based NFAs bearing spiro-substituted bithiophene or biphenyl units (named SpiroT-DCI and SpiroF-DCI) to tune the frontier molecular orbital (FMO) distribution of NFAs. While the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) of SpiroF-DCI and ITIC are delocalized in the main π-conjugated framework, the HOMO of SpiroT-DCI is distributed on the bithiophene unit. Reflecting this difference, SpiroT-DCI exhibits a smaller Eb than either SpiroF-DCI or ITIC, and exhibits greater external quantum efficiency in single-component OSCs. Furthermore, SpiroT-DCI shows improved PCEs for bulk-heterojunction OSCs with a donor of PBDB-T, compared with that of either SpiroT-DCI or ITIC. Time-resolved spectroscopy measurements show that the photo-induced intermolecular charge separation is effective even in pristine SpiroT-DCI films. This study highlights the introduction of spiro-substituted bithiophene units that are effective in tuning the FMOs of ITIC, which is desirable for reducing the Eb and improving the PCE in OSCs.

Solid additives have drawn great attention due to their numerous appealing benefits in enhancing the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of organic solar cells (OSCs). To date, various strategies have been reported for the selection or design of non‐volatile solid additives. However, the lack of a general design/evaluation principles for developing non‐volatile solid additives often results in individual solid additives offering only one or two efficiency‐boosting attributes. In this work, we propose an integrated omnidirectional strategy for designing non‐volatile solid additives. By validating the method on the 4,5,9,10‐pyrene diimide (PyDI) system, a novel non‐volatile solid additive named PyMC5 was designed. PyMC5 is capable of enhancing device performance by establishing synergistic dual charge transfer channels, forming appropriate interactions with active layer materials, reducing non‐radiative voltage loss and optimizing film morphology. Notably, the binary device (PM6:L8‐BO) treated by PyMC5 achieved a PCE over 19.5%, ranking among the highest reported to date. In addition, the integration of PyMC5 mitigated the degradation process of the devices under photo‐ and thermal‐stress conditions. This work demonstrates an efficient integrated omnidirectional approach for designing non‐volatile solid additives, offering a promising avenue for further advancements in OSC development.

Room-Temperature Ripening Enabled by Hygroscopic Salts for Hole-conductor-Free Printable Perovskite Solar Cells with Efficiency Over 20 .

Solution-processed perovskite films generally possess small grain sizes and high density of grain boundaries, which intensify non-radiative recombination of carriers and limit the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of solar cells. In this study, we report the room-temperature ripening enabled by the synergy of hygroscopic salts and moisture in air for efficient hole-conductor-free printable mesoscopic perovskite solar cells (p-MPSCs). Treating perovskite films with proper hygroscopic salts in damp air induces obvious secondary recrystallization, which coarsens the grains size from hundreds of nanometers to several micrometers. It's proposed that the hygroscopic salt at grain boundaries could absorb moisture and form a complex which could not only serve as mass transfer channel but also assist in the dissolution of perovskite grains. This activates mass transfer between small grains and large grains since they possess different solubilities, and thus ripens the perovskite film. Consequently, p-MPSCs treated with the hygroscopic salt of NH4SCN show an improved power conversion efficiency of 20.13 % from 17.94 %, and maintain >98 % of the initial efficiency under maximum power point tracking at 55±5 °C for 350 hours.

Uniform Phase Permutation of Efficient Ruddlesden-Popper Perovskite Solar Cells via Binary Spacers and Single Crystal Coordination.

2D Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites (RPPs) have attracted extensive attention in recent years due to their excellent environmental stability. However, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of RPP solar cells is much lower than that of 3D perovskite solar cells (PSCs), mainly attributed to their poor carrier transport performance and excessive heterogeneous phases. Herein, the binary spacers (n-butylammonium, BA and benzamidine, PFA) are introduced to regulate the crystallization kinetics and n-value phase distribution to form uniform phase permutation of RPP films. The study then incorporates n = 5 BA2MA4Pb5I16 memory single crystal to achieve ultrafast stepped-type carrier transport from the low n-value phases to the high n-value phases in the high-quality (BA0.75PFA0.25)2MA4Pb5I16 films. These binary spacers and single-crystal-assisted crystallization strategies produce high-quality films, leading to fast carrier extraction and significant nonradiative recombination suppression. The resulting PSC presents a champion PCE of 21.15% with an impressive open circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.26V, which is the record high efficiency and VOC for low n-value RPP solar cells (n ≤ 5).

A Novel Upside-Down Thermal Annealing Method Toward High-Quality Active Layers Enables Organic Solar Cells with Efficiency Approaching 20.

The emerging non-fullerene acceptors with low voltage losses have pushed the power conversion efficiency of organic solar cells (OSCs) to ≈20% with auxiliary morphology optimization. Thermal annealing (TA), as the most widely adopted post-treatment method, has been playing an essential role in realizing the potential of various material systems. However, the procedure of TA, i.e., the way that TA is performed, is almost identical among thousands of OSC papers since ≈30 years ago other than changes in temperature and annealing time. Herein, a reverse thermal annealing (RTA) technique is developed, which can enhance the dielectric constant of active layer film, thereby producing a smaller Coulomb capture radius (14.93 nm), meanwhile, forming a moderate nano-scale phase aggregation and a more favorable face-on molecular stacking orientation. Thus, this method can reduce the decline in open circuit voltage of the conventional TA method by achieving decreased radiative (0.334 eV) and non-radiative (0.215 eV) recombination loss. The power conversion efficiency of the RTA PM6:L8-BO-X device increases to 19.91% (certified 19.42%) compared to the TA device (18.98%). It is shown that this method exhibits a superb universality in 4 other material systems, revealing its dramatic potential to be employed in a wide range of OSCs.

Machine Learning Approaches for Predicting Power Conversion Efficiency in Organic Solar Cells: A Comprehensive Review

Organic solar cells (OSCs), renowned for their lightweight, cost efficiency, and adaptability nature, stand out as a promising option for developing renewable energy. Improving the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of OSCs is essential, and researchers are delving into novel materials to achieve this. Traditional approaches are often laborious and costly, highlighting the need for predictive modeling. Machine learning (ML), especially via quantitative structure–property relationship (QSPR) models, is streamlining material development, with a goal to exceed a 20% PCE. In this review, the application of ML in OSCs is explored, and recent studies utilizing ML approaches for PCE prediction are reviewed, encompassing empirical functions, ML algorithms, self‐devised ML frameworks, and the combination with automated experimental technologies. First, the benefits of ML in predicting PCE for OSCs are addressed. Second, the development of high‐efficiency predictive models for both fullerene and nonfullerene acceptors is delved into. The impact of various ML algorithm models on PCE prediction is then assessed, taking into account the construction of predictive models. Moreover, the quality of databases and the selection of descriptors are considered. Databases and descriptors based on experimental studies are further categorized. Finally, prospects for the future development of OSCs are proposed.

Lattice Dynamics of Cu2ZnSn(S x ,Se1-x )4 Kesterite Thin-Film Solar Cells Studied by Nuclear Inelastic Scattering.

Phonons play a crucial role in thermalization and non-radiative recombination losses in semiconductors, impacting the power conversion efficiency of solar cells. To shed light on the lattice dynamics in Cu2ZnSn(S x ,Se1-x )4 (CZTSSe) thin-film solar cells and validate the extensive number of theoretical studies, we determine the 119Sn-partial phonon density of states (Sn-PDOS) by nuclear inelastic X-ray scattering. CZTSSe-based devices, one with near-stoichiometric and two with off-stoichiometric compositions, are investigated, and the results are correlated with the corresponding power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 3.2, 7.6, and 10.6%, respectively. Compared to the near-stoichiometric cell, the main Sn-PDOS peak of the off-stoichiometric cells broadens and slightly shifts to higher energy; this effect is correlated with the type and concentration of the characteristic defects in the studied samples. Furthermore, the Sn-PDOS of the 10.6% device is also obtained under operando (maximum power point) and open-circuit conditions. A comparison of the Sn-PDOS before and after the operando measurements suggests structural changes, likely due to the formation of metastable defects. In agreement with the theoretical studies, the Sn-PDOS of the CZTSSe absorber shows additional peaks compared to CZTSe attributed to coupling of Sn to the vibrations of Se and S atoms. This work paves the way for a further understanding of the lattice dynamics and subsequent enhancement of the PCEs of thin-film solar cells as well as other applied materials and devices containing elements that are Mössbauer-active and hence suitable for nuclear inelastic scattering.

3D/2D lead-free halide perovskite CsSnBr3/MoX (X = Se2, SSe, S2) heterostructures for high-efficiency solar cell: Interface engineering strategies and transition of band alignments

The rapid progress in the fabrication of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures based on perovskite has significantly advanced the fields of optoelectronics and solar cells by integrating the exceptional properties of different materials. Overall, perovskite-based vdW heterostructures display unique functional characteristics due to their varied type-I, type-II, and type-III energy band configurations. However, it is a challenge to achieve flexible regulation of band edge alignment in heterostructures for different applications. Using first-principles density functional theory, we systematically study the electronic and optical properties of vdW heterostructures system consisting of three-dimensional lead-free all-inorganic halide perovskite materials CsSnBr3 and MoX (X = Se2, SSe, S2). The research results show that in the CsSnBr3/MoX vdW heterostructures, type I, II, and III transitions of band arrangements are achieved through interface engineering strategy to adapt to different applications. Meanwhile, by calculating the light absorption efficiency of the constructed 3D/2D vdW heterostructures, it was found that the interface effect enhances the optical absorption range and intensity of the perovskite-based heterostructures. The theoretically estimated power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the heterostructure thin-film solar cell reaches 21.4 %. The results of our research indicate that the controllable band alignment of CsSnBr3/MoX heterostructures has significant potential for future applications in optoelectronics.

New family of two-dimensional A2B2C5 single-layer with high carrier mobilities and excellent conversion efficiency for solar cells

Screening high-performance two-dimensional (2D) materials with desirable direct band gaps and high mobility has attracted great interest due to their excellent application in 2D field effect transistors. Herein, we predicted a new family of nine-atomic A2B2C5 (A = Mg, Ba; B= Al, Ga, and In, C = S, Se) single-layer using first-principles calculations. The results indicate that the energies of this A2B2C5 single-layer are slightly lower than that of exfoliated single-layer Mg2Al2S5. Furthermore, most of the A2B2C5 single-layers host not only direct band gaps but also outstanding electron mobilities (up to ∼103 cm2V−1s−1), revealing a desirable range of near-infrared to visible light absorption. Importantly, single-layer Ba2Al2Se5 and Mg2Ga2Se5 are good donor materials, the corresponding Ba2Al2Se5/HfS2 and Mg2Ga2Se5/InS type-II heterostructures exhibit promising power conversion efficiencies of 22.3 % and 19.8 %, respectively. Our work provides some competitive A2B2C5 candidate single-layers for applying high-performance solar cells.

Transparent and smooth liquid-repellent coating for self-cleaning applications of solar cells

Abstract Solar energy as a clean, renewable energy source is perceived as a potential remedy to the environmental and climate degradation caused by fossil fuels. However, the surface contamination severely diminishes the photovoltaic conversion efficiency of solar cells. Liquid-repellent coatings that combine transparency and durability could be candidates for self-cleaning application of solar cells. Herein, a smooth liquid-repellent coating (SLRC) was developed by synergizing organosilicon and fluorine and was cured at room temperature. Owing to the low-surface-energy groups and flexible chains enriched on the SLRC surface, as well as cross-linking reactions and functional additives within the SLRC matrix, it exhibited liquid-repellency and UV-shielding properties. Moreover, SLRC could be applied to solar cells by spraying methods and displayed efficient self-cleaning properties.
