Improved resettable integrator control for a bridgeless interleaved AC/DC converter

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) consist of a front-end boost rectifier, which incorporates a power factor correction (PFC) circuit for battery charging. Bridgeless interleaved (BLIL) PFC boost converter topology is proved as a standard PFC converter as it has high efficiency, reduced input current ripple, and reduced electromagnetic interference (EMI). This paper proposes a digital nonlinear control technique that employs a resettable integrator to shape the input current of the converter in phase with the input voltage to achieve high input power factor. This control approach rejects power source and load perturbations better than linear feedback control methods. This is accomplished by summing up the sensed input current of a BLIL converter with a fictitious current synthesized with the input voltage. In this work, a BLIL converter is analyzed for its input power factor improvement, voltage stress across the devices, and dynamic response under variable supply and load conditions using simulation. The hardware is tested for a 300 W BLIL boost converter to validate the simulated results. The performance of the proposed controller is compared with that of conventional average current mode control. The experiment and simulation results prove that the resettable integrator controller shows a better performance than the conventional controller.

Comparative Performance Analysis of High Density and Efficiency PFC Topologies

In this paper, the efficiency and power factor performance of improved power factor correction (PFC) topologies suitable for a high density and efficient design are compared. Several topologies, including a conventional average current mode control boost PFC, an interleaved boost PFC, a back-to-back bridgeless boost PFC, and a semi-bridgeless boost PFC, are assessed through loss analysis and simulation using whole height 1 U and 2 kW class prototypes. Based on this, an optimal topology is selected for which an additional comparative analysis involving input line measure improvement control is conducted. The results of these experiments can be adapted for use in the circuit selection of high-performance converters with power factor improvement circuits.

Modelling of nonisolated high-voltage gain boost converters using the PWM switch model

This paper presents the small-signal models for nonisolated dc–dc boost converters based on the three-state switching cell (3SSC) and voltage multiplier cells (VMCs) by using the concept of pulse-width modulation switch introduced by Vorpérian. Two possible topologies are analysed in the study using one multiplier cell (VMC = 1) and two multiplier cells (VMC = 2). The models are validated by properly comparing the theoretical curves with those obtained in simulation tests. Besides, conventional average current-mode control is implemented in practice for the topology with VMC = 2. An experimental prototype rated at 1 kW is evaluated so that it can be seen that the control system is stable and the dynamic response of the converter is satisfactory.

Analysis and design of a robust average current mode control loop for parallel buck DC-DC converters to reduce line and load disturbance

A robust control scheme for multi-module parallel buck DC-DC converters with average current mode control (ACC) is presented. The proposed loop adds an inner loop to the conventional current and voltage ACC loops, reducing the sensitivity of the outer voltage loop to the changing power stage parameters: number of modules, input voltage, load and component tolerances. The loop improves significantly the disturbance rejection of the converter, i.e. the closed loop output impedance and audiosusceptibility, while preserving the stability and the loop gain crossover frequency to a significant extent. The performance of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by both small-signal and large signal experimental results.

Fast‐scale instability in a PFC boost converter under average current‐mode control

AbstractThis paper investigates the fast‐scale instability in a power‐factor‐correction (PFC) boost converter under a conventional average current‐mode control. The converter is operated in continuous mode. Computer simulations and theoretical analysis are performed to study the effects of the time‐varying input voltage under the variation of some chosen parameters on the qualitative behaviour of the system. It is found that fast‐scale instability may occur during a line cycle, which can cause distortion to the line current and degrade the practical power factor. The results provide useful information for the design of PFC boost converters to avoid distortion due to fast‐scale bifurcation. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Robust average current-mode control of multimodule parallel DC-DC PWM converter systems with improved dynamic response

This paper presents a novel average current-mode control (ACC) strategy for the control of multimodule parallel pulsewidth modulation DC-DC converters, which represents a drastic improvement over conventional ACC. This new method consists of the addition of an auxiliary controller into the control loop, besides the current and voltage regulators. The reference-model-based auxiliary controller improves the robustness of the ACC dynamics in buck-derived distributed power systems, preserving loop gain crossover frequency and stability margins over significant changes of the number of connected modules, the load and the line voltage. Moreover, this control scheme shows much better disturbance rejection properties, i.e., closed-loop output impedance and audiosusceptibility, than conventional ACC. From a control theory point of view robust performance is achieved, preserving stability. A multimodule buck prototype has been experimentally tested with different numbers of modules on stream, line, and load conditions, including discontinuous conduction mode. Measurements of the small-signal frequency response of the converter have been carried out, showing the improvement achieved by the proposed control scheme. The empirical large-signal response of the converter under load steps is also shown in order to validate the concept.

Novel three-controller average current mode control of DC-DC PWM converters with improved robustness and dynamic response

The model-based auxiliary controller can increase the closed loop small-signal bandwidth of Buck derived converters, preserving loop gain crossover frequency and stability margins over significant changes of the power stage passive elements values, the load and the line voltage. Moreover, this control scheme shows much better disturbance rejection properties, i.e., closed loop impedance and audiosusceptibility, than conventional ACC. From a control theory point of view, robust performance is achieved preserving stability.
