An Automated Approach to Estimating Convective Boundary Layer Depth From Dual-Polarization WSR-88D Radar Observations

Abstract Convective boundary layer (CBL) depth can be estimated from dual-polarization WSR-88D radars using the product differential reflectivity (ZDR), because the CBL top is co-located with a local ZDR minimum produced by Bragg scatter at the interface of the CBL and the free troposphere. Quasi-vertical profiles (QVPs) of ZDR are produced for each radar volume scan and profiles from successive times are stitched together to form a time-height plot of ZDR from sunrise to sunset. QVPs of ZDR often show a low-ZDR channel that starts near the ground and rises during the morning and early afternoon, identifying the CBL top. Unfortunately, results show that this channel within the QVP can occasionally be misleading. This motivated creation of a new variable: DVar, which combines ZDR with its azimuthal variance and is particularly helpful at identifying the CBL top during the morning hours. Two methods are developed to track the CBL top from QVPs of ZDR and DVar. Although each method has strengths and weaknesses, the best results are found when the two methods are combined using inverse variance weighting. The ability to detect CBL depth from routine WSR-88D radar scans rather than from rawinsondes or lidar instruments would vastly improve our understanding of CBL depth variations in the daytime by increasing the temporal and spatial frequency of the observations.

Exploring the daytime boundary layer evolution based on Doppler spectrum width from multiple coplanar wind lidars during CROSSINN

Abstract. Over heterogeneous, mountainous terrain, the determination of spatial heterogeneity of any type of a turbulent layer has been known to pose substantial challenges in mountain meteorology. In addition to the combined effect in which buoyancy and shear contribute to the turbulence intensity of such layers, it is well known that mountains add an additional degree of complexity via non-local transport mechanisms, compared to flatter topography. It is therefore the aim of this study to determine the vertical depths of both daytime convectively and shear-driven boundary layers within a fairly wide and deep Alpine valley during summertime. Specifically, three Doppler lidars deployed during the CROSSINN (Cross-valley flow in the Inn Valley investigated by dual-Doppler lidar measurements) campaign within a single week in August 2019 are used to this end, as they were deployed along a transect nearly perpendicular to the along-valley axis. To achieve this, a bottom-up exceedance threshold method based on turbulent Doppler spectrum width sampled by the three lidars has been developed and validated against a more traditional bulk Richardson number approach applied to radiosonde profiles obtained above the valley floor. The method was found to adequately capture the depths of convective turbulent boundary layers at a 1 min temporal and 50 m spatial resolution across the valley, with the degree of ambiguity increasing once surface convection decayed and upvalley flows gained in intensity over the course of the afternoon and evening hours. Analysis of four intensive observation period (IOP) events elucidated three regimes of the daytime mountain boundary layer in this section of the Inn Valley. Each of the three regimes has been analysed as a function of surface sensible heat flux H, upper-level valley stability Γ, and upper-level subsidence wL estimated with the coplanar retrieval method. Finally, the positioning of the three Doppler lidars in a cross-valley configuration enabled one of the most highly spatially and temporally resolved observational convective boundary layer depth data sets during daytime and over complex terrain to date.

Identification of Convective Boundary Layer Depth over the Great Lakes Region Using Aircraft Observations: A Comparison of Various Methods

Abstract This study evaluates the methods of identifying the height zi of the top of the convective boundary layer (CBL) during winter (December and January) over the Great Lakes and nearby land areas using observations taken by the University of Wyoming King Air research aircraft during the Lake-Induced Convection Experiment (1997/98) and Ontario Winter Lake-effect Systems (2013/14) field campaigns. Since CBLs facilitate vertical mixing near the surface, the most direct measurement of zi is that above which the vertical velocity turbulent fluctuations are weak or absent. Thus, we use zi from the turbulence method as the “reference value” to which zi from other methods, based on bulk Richardson number (Rib), liquid water content, and vertical gradients of potential temperature, relative humidity, and water vapor mixing ratio, are compared. The potential temperature gradient method using a threshold value of 0.015 K m−1 for soundings over land and 0.011 K m−1 for soundings over lake provided the estimates of zi that are most consistent with the turbulence method. The Rib threshold-based method, commonly used in numerical simulation studies, underestimated zi. Analyzing the methods’ performance on the averaging window zavg we recommend using zavg = 20 or 50 m for zi estimations for lake-effect boundary layers. The present dataset consists of both cloudy and cloud-free boundary layers, some having decoupled boundary layers above the inversion top. Because cases of decoupled boundary layers appear to be formed by nearby synoptic storms, we recommend use of the more general term, elevated mixed layers. Significance Statement The depth zi of the convective atmospheric boundary layer (CBL) strongly influences precipitation rates during lake-effect snowstorms (LES). However, various zi approximation methods produce significantly different results. This study utilizes extensive concurrently collected observations by project aircraft during two LES field studies [Lake-Induced Convection Experiment (Lake-ICE) and OWLeS] to assess how zi from common estimation methods compare with “reference” zi derived from turbulent fluctuations, a direct measure of CBL mixing. For soundings taken both over land and lake; with cloudy or cloud-free conditions, potential temperature gradient (PTG) methods provided the best agreement with the reference zi. A method commonly employed in numerical simulations performed relatively poorly. Interestingly, the PTG method worked equally well for “coupled” and elevated decoupled CBLs, commonly associated with nearby cyclones.

The Influence of Terrain Smoothing on Simulated Convective Boundary-Layer Depths in Mountainous Terrain

Many applications rely on a correct estimation of the convective boundary layer (CBL) depth over mountainous terrain, but often these applications use numerical model simulations. Although models inevitably smooth terrain, the amount of smoothing depends on grid spacing. We investigate the behavior of the CBL in coarse- and fine-grid models applied to mountainous terrain by using output from an operational mesoscale modeling system and by performing quasi-idealized simulations. We investigate different areas in different climate zones using different CBL top derivation methods, grid spacing ratios, planetary boundary layer (PBL) schemes, and terrain smoothing. We find that when compared to fine-grid simulations, CBL depths are systematically larger in coarse domains over mountaintops, and to a lesser extent in valleys. On average, differences between coarse- and fine-domains over mountaintops could reach around 10%. In certain locations, differences could be as high as 25%. We attribute the result to terrain smoothing. Similarly, when using a coarse-grid CBL height (relative to mean sea level) interpolated using fine-grid terrain information, there is good agreement with fine-grid CBL depths over mountaintops and less agreement in valleys. Our results have implications for applications that use output from coarse model grids in mountainous terrain. These include inverse modeling studies (e.g., greenhouse gas budget estimations or integrated water vapor transport), PBL evaluation studies, climate research, air quality applications, planning and executing prescribed burns, and studies associated with precipitation over mountainous terrain.

Temporal dynamics and controlling factors of CO2 and CH4 variability in the urban atmosphere of Wroclaw, Poland

Temporal and spatial distribution of both biogenic and anthropogenic components of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) is crucial for understanding the environmental impacts of climate change over urban areas. This research focuses on applying stable isotope source-partitioning studies to determine the interactions between biogenic and anthropogenic CO2 and CH4 emissions in an average-sized city environment. Study signifies the weight of instantaneous variability and diurnal averaging as compared with seasonal records of variations of the atmospheric CO2 and CH4 at a variety of typical urban sites in the city of Wroclaw, conducted during a one-year period from June 2017 to August 2018.The findings reveal distinct temporal variations in atmospheric CO2 and CH4 mole fractions and their isotopic composition. The average atmospheric CO2 and CH4 mole fractions during the study period were 416.4 ± 20.5 ppm, and 1.95 ± 0.09 ppm, respectively. The study highlights the high variability of driving forces, including current energy use patterns, natural carbon reservoirs, planetary boundary layer dynamics, and atmospheric transport. Additionally, the relationship between the evolution of the convective boundary layer depth and the CO2 budget was analyzed using the CLASS model with input parameters based on field observations, resulting in insights such as an increase in the range of 25–65 ppm of CO2 during stable nocturnal boundary layers.The observed changes in stable isotopic signatures of air samples allowed for the identification of two main source categories in the city area: fuel combustion and biogenic processes. The δ13C-CO2 values of collected samples suggest that biogenic emissions dominate (up to 60 % of CO2 excess mole fraction) during the growing season, but are reduced by plant photosynthesis during summer afternoons. In contrast, local fossil-fuel CO2 contribution (up to 90 % of excess CO2 mole fraction) from domestic heating, vehicle emissions, and heat and power plants predominantly influence the urban GHG budget during winter. The δ13C-CH4 values indicate anthropogenic sources related to fossil fuel combustion during winter, with values ranging from −44.2 ‰ to −51.4 ‰, while slightly more depleted values, between −47.1 ‰ and −54.2 ‰, reflect a larger input of biological processes in the methane urban budget during summer.Overall, instantaneous and hourly variability of the above-mentioned readings of gas mole fraction and isotopic composition, have shown higher variability than seasonal amplitudes. Hence, respecting this granularity is the key to alignment and understanding significance of such localized atmospheric pollution studies. Additionally, the changing overprint of the system's framework, such as variability of wind and atmospheric layering patterns, weather events, provides context of sampling and data analysis at different frequencies.

Turbulent Mechanisms for the Deep Convective Boundary Layer in the Taklimakan Desert

AbstractThe deep convective boundary layer (CBL) in the Taklimakan Desert plays an important role in the climate system in East Asia. Based on the observation experiment and large‐eddy simulation, turbulent mechanisms for its formation were revealed in this study. This explained why the daily maximum CBL depth was independent of surface heating. In the late‐morning, there was a weak temperature inversion and a near‐neutral residual layer (RL) above the CBL. With the development of the CBL, stronger convection could penetrate the RL and even overshoot the top of the RL. The distinctive boundary‐layer process entrained free‐tropospheric air to warm the RL and then promoted the entrainment of the warmed air in the RL into the CBL. This extra energy supply effectively contributed to the growth of the CBL. With further positive feedback between the CBL and RL depths, a deeper CBL would form in consecutive fair‐weather conditions.

A Ship-Based Characterization of Coherent Boundary-Layer Structures Over the Lifecycle of a Marine Cold-Air Outbreak

Convective coherent structures shape the atmospheric boundary layer over the lifecycle of marine cold-air outbreaks (CAOs). Aircraft measurements have been used to characterize such structures in past CAOs. Yet, aircraft case studies are limited to snapshots of a few hours and do not capture how coherent structures, and the associated boundary-layer characteristics, change over the CAO time scale, which can be on the order of several days. We present a novel ship-based approach to determine the evolution of the coherent-structure characteristics, based on profiling lidar observations. Over the lifecycle of a multi-day CAO we show how these structures interact with boundary-layer characteristics, simultaneously obtained by a multi-sensor set-up. Observations are taken during the Iceland Greenland Seas Project’s wintertime cruise in February and March 2018. For the evaluated CAO event, we successfully identify cellular coherent structures of varying size in the order of 4 times 10^2 m to 10^4 m and velocity amplitudes of up to 0.5 m hbox {s}^{-1} in the vertical and 1 m hbox {s}^{-1} in the horizontal. The structures’ characteristics are sensitive to the near-surface stability and the Richardson number. We observe the largest coherent structures most frequently for conditions when turbulence generation is weakly buoyancy dominated. Structures of increasing size contribute efficiently to the overturning of the boundary layer and are linked to the growth of the convective boundary-layer depth. The new approach provides robust statistics for organized convection, which would be easy to extend by additional observations during convective events from vessels of opportunity operating in relevant areas.

Large Eddy Simulations of the Dusty Martian Convective Boundary Layer With MarsWRF

AbstractLarge eddy simulation (LES) of the Martian convective boundary layer (CBL) with a Mars‐adapted version of the Weather Research and Forecasting model is used to examine the impact of aerosol dust radiative‐dynamical feedbacks on turbulent mixing. The LES is validated against spacecraft observations and prior modeling. To study dust redistribution by coherent dynamical structures within the CBL, two radiatively active dust distribution scenarios are used: one in which the dust distribution remains fixed and another in which dust is freely transported by CBL motions. In the fixed dust scenario, increasing atmospheric dust loading shades the surface from sunlight and weakens convection. However, a competing effect emerges in the free dust scenario, resulting from the lateral concentration of dust in updrafts. The resulting enhancement of dust radiative heating in upwelling plumes both generates horizontal thermal contrasts in the CBL and increases buoyancy production, jointly enhancing CBL convection. We define a dust inhomogeneity index (DII) to quantify how much dust is concentrated in upwelling plumes. If the DII is large enough, the destabilizing effect of lateral heating contrasts can exceed the stabilizing effect of surface shading such that the CBL depth increases with increasing dust optical depth. Thus, under certain combinations of total dust optical depth and the lateral inhomogeneity of dust, a positive feedback exists between dust optical depth, the vigor and depth of CBL mixing, and—to the extent that dust lifting is controlled by the depth and vigor of CBL mixing—the further lifting of dust from the surface.

A Ceilometer-Derived Climatology of the Convective Boundary Layer Over a Southern Hemisphere Subtropical City

Accurate measurements of the depth of the convective boundary layer (CBL) are fundamental for understanding and forecasting weather, air quality, and climate. However, the CBL depth (BLD) shows significant spatial and temporal variability, which is challenging to measure and model. Ceilometer instruments, which estimate the CBL depth from aerosol layers, are relatively cheap, have high temporal resolution, and have the potential for increased spatial coverage. Nevertheless, their performance in subtropical environments with low aerosol concentrations is unknown. Furthermore, climatological studies of the variability in the urban CBL depth are scarce, especially in the Southern Hemisphere, and very few studies have examined the relationship between BLD variability and synoptic conditions. Using three years of continuous ceilometer data, we present a novel climatology of the temporal variability in CBL depth over the Southern Hemisphere subtropical, coastal city of Auckland, New Zealand. The results indicate that the median daytime maximum CBL depth (BLDMAX) over the Auckland CBD is 1100 m a.g.l. (above ground level) during summer and 700 m a.g.l. during winter. Strong relationships are found between the maximum CBL depth and both solar radiation and soil moisture; however, no relationship is found between the maximum CBL depth and the synoptic conditions as determined by the New Zealand Kidson weather types synoptic classification. The absence of a relationship between the maximum CBL depth and Kidson weather types may explain the poor correlation previously observed between synoptic class and air pollution events in Auckland.

The Saharan convective boundary layer structure over large scale surface heterogeneity: A large eddy simulation study

Extreme atmospheric and surface conditions over the vast Saharan desert result in the development of one of the deepest atmospheric boundary layers (Saharan Atmospheric Boundary Layer, SABL) on the planet. The land cover in the Sahara mainly consists of wide interchanging areas of stony and sandy desert intercepted by narrower bare rock formations. Significant changes in surface albedo, surface temperature, turbulence fluxes and wind speed have been observed with remote measurement platforms like aircraft and satellites. This was a motivation to simulate the convective boundary layer (CBL) that develops over the heterogeneous Saharan surface with a two-way coupled system of a large eddy simulation code (LES) and a land surface model (LSM). Initial and boundary conditions are provided by airborne observations and mesoscale atmospheric simulations. In order to investigate the effect of surface heterogeneity on the vertical structure of the SABL, a large scale (larger than 10 km) idealized warm surface anomaly is simulated and analyzed. A land strip with a low surface albedo produces almost doubled fluxes in density and stronger convergence near the ground than over the surrounding brighter surfaces. First and second order turbulence statistics reveal that strong thermals penetrate the inversion layer above the CBL producing a vigorous exchange between unstable and overlying stable air. Furthermore, a convective internal boundary layer (CIBL) is formed over the warm strip. The downwind development of the CIBL is studied and CBL depth equations from literature are revised. The average turbulent structure of the SABL reveals flow changes locally and downwind of the surface heterogeneity (strip), which can be more significant than the dispersive fluxes due to surface heterogeneity, and may have an important effect on processes such as dust uplift and its long range transport that influence weather and climate globally.

Nonsingular Zero-Order Bulk Models of Sheared Convective Boundary Layers

Abstract Two zero-order bulk models (ZOMs) are developed for the velocity, buoyancy, and moisture of a cloud-free barotropic convective boundary layer (CBL) that grows into a linearly stratified atmosphere. The models differ in the entrainment closure assumption: in the first one, termed the “energetics-based model,” the negative and positive areas of the buoyancy flux are assumed to match between the model and the actual CBL; in the second one, termed the “geometric-based model,” the modeled CBL depth is assumed to match different definitions of the actual CBL depth. Parameterizations for these properties derived from direct numerical simulation (DNS) are employed as entrainment closure equations. These parameterizations, and hence the resulting models, are free from the potential singularity at finite wind strength that has been a major limitation in previous bulk models. The proposed ZOMs are verified using the DNS data. Model results show that the CBL depths obtained from the energetics-based model and previous ZOMs correspond to the height that marks the transition from the lower to the upper entrainment-zone sublayer; this reference height is few hundred meters above the height of the minimum buoyancy flux. It is also argued that ZOMs, despite their simplicity compared to higher-order models, can accurately represent CBL bulk properties when the relevant features of the actual entrainment zone are considered in the entrainment closures. The vertical structure of the actual entrainment zone, if required, can be constructed a posteriori using the available relationships between the predicted zero-order CBL depth and various definitions of the actual CBL depth.

Progress toward Characterization of the Atmospheric Boundary Layer over Northern Alabama Using Observations by a Vertically Pointing, S-Band Profiling Radar during VORTEX-Southeast

AbstractDuring spring 2016 and spring 2017, a vertically pointing, S-band Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave radar (UMass FMCW) was deployed in northern Alabama under the auspices of the Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment (VORTEX)-Southeast. In total, ~14 weeks of data were collected, in conditions ranging from quiescent clear skies to severe thunderstorms. The principal objective of these deployments was to characterize the boundary layer evolution near the VORTEX-Southeast domain. In this paper, we describe intermediate results in service of this objective. Specifically, we describe updates to the UMass FMCW system, document its deployments for VORTEX-Southeast, and apply four automated algorithms: 1) a dealiasing algorithm to the Doppler velocities, 2) a fuzzy logic scatterer classification scheme to separate precipitation from nonprecipitation observations, 3) a brightband/melting-layer identification algorithm for stratiform precipitation, and 4) an extended Kalman filter–based convective boundary layer depth (mixing height) measurement algorithm for nonprecipitation observations. Results from the latter two applications are qualitatively verified against retrieved soundings from a collocated thermodynamic profiling system.

The Use of High-Resolution Sounding Data to Evaluate and Optimize Nonlocal PBL Schemes for Simulating the Slightly Stable Upper Convective Boundary Layer

Abstract Since the 1950s, a countergradient flux term has been added to some K-profile-based first-order PBL schemes, allowing them to simulate the slightly statically stable upper part of the convective boundary layer (CBL) observed in a limited number of aircraft soundings. There is, however, substantial uncertainty in inferring detailed CBL structure, particularly the level of neutral stability (zn), from such a limited number of soundings. In this study, composite profiles of potential temperature are derived from multiyear early afternoon radiosonde data over Beijing, China. The CBLs become slightly stable above zn ~ 0.31–0.33zi, where zi is the CBL depth. These composite profiles are used to evaluate two K-profile PBL schemes, the Yonsei University (YSU) and Shin–Hong (SH) schemes, and to optimize the latter through parameter calibration. In one-dimensional simulations using the WRF Model, YSU simulates a stable CBL above zn ~ 0.24zi, while default SH simulates a thick superadiabatic lower CBL with zn ~ 0.45zi. Experiments with the analytic solution of a K-profile PBL model show that adjusting the countergradient flux profile leads to significant changes in the thermal structure of CBL, informing the calibration of SH. The SH scheme replaces the countergradient heat flux term in its predecessor YSU scheme with a three-layer nonlocal heating profile, with fnl specifying the peak value and z*SL specifying the height of this peak value. Increasing fnl to 1.1 lowers zn, but to too low a value, while simultaneously increasing z*SL to 0.4 leads to a more appropriate zn ~ 0.36zi. The calibrated SH scheme performs better than YSU and default SH for real CBLs.

Comparison of Convective Boundary Layer Characteristics from Aircraft and Wind Lidar Observations

AbstractDuring the Convective Storm Initiation Project experiment, which was conducted in summer 2005 in southern England, vertical velocity in the convective boundary layer (CBL) was measured simultaneously with a research aircraft and a wind lidar. The aircraft performed horizontal flight legs approximately parallel to the prevailing wind direction and centered over the lidar. This measurement setup allows for the comparing of CBL characteristics (CBL depth zi, integral length scale lw, spectral peak wavelength λm, and vertical velocity variance ) from temporal (lidar) and spatial (aircraft) measurements. For this, the lidar time series are transferred into space using the mean wind. While the statistics of the aircraft data are all based on the 34-km flight legs, the averaging interval for the lidar is either 1 h or a longer period that corresponds to the 34-km leg. Although the lw and λm values from aircraft and lidar measurements are in the same range (100–200 and 500–2000 m) and agree well on the average, the correlation for individual legs is very low (R2 < 0.17). One possible explanation is the large uncertainty that arises from the transfer of the lidar time series to space. For , the agreement between aircraft and lidar is better for individual legs (R2 ≥ 0.63), but the mean absolute difference in is about 2.5 times as large as the statistical error. We examine the nonstationarity and heterogeneity for the lidar and aircraft samples and can exclude these as the major sources for the large differences between lidar and aircraft data.

The Universality of the Normalized Vertical Velocity Variance in Contrast to the Horizontal Velocity Variance in the Convective Boundary Layer

Abstract The vertical turbulent velocity variance normalized by the convective velocity squared as a function of the boundary layer depth–normalized height [i.e., ] in the convective boundary layer (CBL) over a homogeneous surface exhibits a near-universal profile, as demonstrated by field observations, laboratory experiments, and numerical simulations. The profile holds over a wide CBL stability range set by the friction velocity, CBL depth, and surface heating. In contrast, the normalized horizontal turbulent velocity variance increases monotonically with decreasing stability. This study investigates the independence of the profile to changes in CBL stability, or more precisely, wind shear. Large-eddy simulations of several convective and neutral cases are performed by varying surface heating and geostrophic winds. Analysis of the turbulent kinetic energy budgets reveals that the conversion term between and depends almost entirely on buoyancy. This explains why does not vary with shear, which is a source to only. Further analysis through rotational and divergent decomposition suggests that the near-universal profile of is fundamentally related to the dynamics and interactions of local and nonlocal CBL turbulence. Specifically, the preferential interactions between local wavenumbers and the downscale energy cascade of CBL turbulence offer plausible explanations to the universal profile of .

Subcloud and Cloud-Base Latent Heat Fluxes during Shallow Cumulus Convection

Abstract Doppler and Raman lidar observations of vertical velocity and water vapor mixing ratio are used to probe the physics and statistics of subcloud and cloud-base latent heat fluxes during cumulus convection at the ARM Southern Great Plains (SGP) site in Oklahoma, United States. The statistical results show that latent heat fluxes increase with height from the surface up to ~0.8Zi (where Zi is the convective boundary layer depth) and then decrease to ~0 at Zi. Peak fluxes aloft exceeding 500 W m−2 are associated with periods of increased cumulus cloud cover and stronger jumps in the mean humidity profile. These entrainment fluxes are much larger than the surface fluxes, indicating substantial drying over the 0–0.8Zi layer accompanied by moistening aloft as the CBL deepens over the diurnal cycle. We also show that the boundary layer humidity budget is approximately closed by computing the flux divergence across the 0–0.8Zi layer. Composite subcloud velocity and water vapor anomalies show that clouds are linked to coherent updraft and moisture plumes. The moisture anomaly is Gaussian, most pronounced above 0.8Zi and systematically wider than the velocity anomaly, which has a narrow central updraft flanked by downdrafts. This size and shape disparity results in downdrafts characterized by a high water vapor mixing ratio and thus a broad joint probability density function (JPDF) of velocity and mixing ratio in the upper CBL. We also show that cloud-base latent heat fluxes can be both positive and negative and that the instantaneous positive fluxes can be very large (~10 000 W m−2). However, since cloud fraction tends to be small, the net impact of these fluxes remains modest.

Characterization of wind-shear effects on entrainment in a convective boundary layer

Direct numerical simulations are used to characterize wind-shear effects on entrainment in a barotropic convective boundary layer (CBL) that grows into a linearly stratified atmosphere. We consider weakly to strongly unstable conditions $-z_{enc}/L_{Ob}\gtrsim 4$, where $z_{enc}$ is the encroachment CBL depth and $L_{Ob}$ is the Obukhov length. Dimensional analysis allows us to characterize such a sheared CBL by a normalized CBL depth, a Froude number and a Reynolds number. The first two non-dimensional quantities embed the dependence of the system on time, on the surface buoyancy flux, and on the buoyancy stratification and wind velocity in the free atmosphere. We show that the dependence of entrainment-zone properties on these two non-dimensional quantities can be expressed in terms of just one independent variable, the ratio between a shear scale $(\unicode[STIX]{x0394}z_{i})_{s}\equiv \sqrt{1/3}\unicode[STIX]{x0394}u/N_{0}$ and a convective scale $(\unicode[STIX]{x0394}z_{i})_{c}\equiv 0.25z_{enc}$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x0394}u$ is the velocity increment across the entrainment zone, and $N_{0}$ is the buoyancy frequency of the free atmosphere. Here $(\unicode[STIX]{x0394}z_{i})_{s}$ and $(\unicode[STIX]{x0394}z_{i})_{c}$ represent the entrainment-zone thickness in the limits of weak convective instability (strong wind) and strong convective instability (weak wind), respectively. We derive scaling laws for the CBL depth, the entrainment-zone thickness, the mean entrainment velocity and the entrainment-flux ratio as functions of $(\unicode[STIX]{x0394}z_{i})_{s}/(\unicode[STIX]{x0394}z_{i})_{c}$. These scaling laws can also be expressed as functions of only a Richardson number $(N_{0}z_{enc}/\unicode[STIX]{x0394}u)^{2}$, but not in terms of only the stability parameter $-z_{enc}/L_{Ob}$.

Predicting the Inland Penetration of Long-Lake-Axis-Parallel Snowbands

AbstractPredicting the inland penetration of lake-effect long-lake-axis-parallel (LLAP) snowbands is crucial to public safety because LLAP bands can produce hazardous weather well downwind of the parent lake. Accordingly, hypotheses for the variation in inland penetration of LLAP-band radar echoes (InPen) are formulated and tested. The hypothesis testing includes an examination of statistical relationships between environmental variables and InPen for 34 snapshots of LLAP bands observed during the Ontario Winter Lake-effect Systems (OWLeS) field campaign. Several previously proposed predictors of LLAP-band formation or InPen demonstrate weak correlations with InPen during OWLeS. A notable exception is convective boundary layer (CBL) depth, which is strongly correlated with InPen. In addition to CBL depth, InPen is strongly correlated with cold-air advection in the upper portion of the CBL, suggesting that boundary layer destabilization produced by vertically differential cold-air advection may be an important inland power source for preexisting LLAP bands. This power production is quantified through atmospheric energetics and the resulting variable, differential thermal advection power (DTAP), yields reasonably skillful predictions of InPen. Nevertheless, an InPen model developed using DTAP is outperformed by an empirical model combining CBL depth and potential temperature advection in the upper portion of the CBL. This two-variable model explains 76% of the observed InPen variance when tested on independent data. Finally, implications for operational forecasting of InPen are discussed.

Convective Boundary Layer Depth Estimation from S-Band Dual-Polarization Radar

AbstractThis study investigates Bragg scatter signatures in dual-polarization radar observations, which are defined by low differential reflectivity values, as a proxy for convective boundary layer (CBL) depth. Using data from the WSR-88D in Twin Lakes, Oklahoma (KTLX), local minima in quasi-vertical profiles of are found to provide a reasonable estimate of CBL depth when compared with depth estimates from upper-air soundings from Norman, Oklahoma (KOUN), during 2014. The 243 Bragg scatter and upper-air sounding CBL depth estimates have a correlation of 0.90 and an RMSE of 254 m. Using Bragg scatter as a proxy for CBL depth was expanded to other seasons and locations—performing well in Wilmington, Ohio; Fairbanks, Alaska; Tucson, Arizona; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Albany, New York; Portland, Oregon; and Tampa, Florida—showing its potential usefulness in monitoring CBL depth throughout the year in a variety of geographic locations and meteorological conditions.

Mesoscale Ascent in Nocturnal Low-Level Jets

A theory for gentle but persistent mesoscale ascent in the lower troposphere is developed in which the vertical motion arises as an inertia–gravity wave response to the sudden decrease of turbulent mixing in a horizontally heterogeneous convective boundary layer (CBL). The zone of ascent is centered on the local maximum of a laterally varying buoyancy field (warm tongue in the CBL). The shutdown also triggers a Blackadar-type inertial oscillation and associated low-level jet (LLJ). These nocturnal motions are studied analytically using the linearized two-dimensional Boussinesq equations of motion, thermal energy, and mass conservation for an inviscid stably stratified fluid, with the initial state described by a zero-order jump model of a CBL. The vertical velocity revealed by the analytical solution increases with the amplitude of the buoyancy variation, CBL depth, and wavenumber of the buoyancy variation (larger vertical velocity for smaller-scale variations). Stable stratification in the free atmosphere has a lid effect, with a larger buoyancy frequency associated with a smaller vertical velocity. For the parameter values typical of the southern Great Plains warm season, the peak vertical velocity is ~3–10 cm s−1, with parcels rising ~0.3–1 km over the ~6–8-h duration of the ascent phase. Data from the 2015 Plains Elevated Convection at Night (PECAN) field project were used as a qualitative check on the hypothesis that the same mechanism that triggers nocturnal LLJs from CBLs can induce gentle but persistent ascent in the presence of a warm tongue.
