Numerical investigations of heat transfer and pressure drop in packed bed duct exposed to forced convection boundaries under local thermal non-equilibrium conditions

The present study is a 2-D numerical study which discusses the thermohydraulic performance of packed bed duct under local thermal non-equilibrium and steady state conditions exposed to forced convection boundaries (BC-6). The numerical model is well validated with the experimental work reported in the literature and found to be accurate enough to perform further parametric investigations. The analysis is done to see the effect of different ball diameter (5 mm, 9 mm and 11 mm), bed porosity, heat transfer fluid (air, water and engine oil - Pr = 0.70–645) and ball material (EPS, steel and bronze) on heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics in turbulent flow region of Reynolds number ranging from 900 to 14,320. The numerical results obtained using commercial CFD software COMSOL shows that, the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop in packed bed increases with increase in ball diameter, thermal conductivity of ball and bed porosity which is exactly reverse as reported in literature for BC-1 to BC-5. The maximum thermal performance factor with bronze particles is 2.45 and 24.5 times more than stainless steel and EPS particles respectively for larger particle size and bed porosity. Engine oil exhibits significantly higher heat transfer coefficient (9.7 × 105 W/m2K) and pressure drop (3.3 × 106 Pa) compared to water (40,126 W/m2K and 2028 Pa) and air (600 W/m2K and 250 Pa) respectively. Overall, the combination of water as heat transfer fluid along with bronze particles of larger diameter and larger bed porosity emerges as the optimal choice for enhancing heat transfer in the packed duct exposed to forced convection boundary condition BC-6.

Effects of Electroosmosis on Peristaltic Flow of Eyring-Powell Fluid Through a Non-Uniform channel: An Application to Blood flow

This study examines the electroosmotic effects of a non-uniform passage during the peristaltic phase of an Eyring-Powell model fluid. Understanding how the channel walls affect fluid flow issues in biofluid dynamics is the main goal of the study. Integrating the convective boundary conditions into the series perturbation paradigm is the main focus of the work, assuming low Reynolds number and a long wavelength. For temperature, velocity, stream function and concentration, the governing non-linear equations have their solutions found. MATLAB R2023a software is used to demonstrate a graphical presentation of the study's improvements in accessibility through parametric assessment. The research yields important insights, particularly regarding natural phenomena like blood flow in small arteries, which might be utilized for intervention or management in dysfunctional circumstances. As the analysis demonstrates, different viscosities also have a big role in boosting the temperature profiles, and electroosmotic parameters have a major impact on the fluid properties.

Variable density and heat generation impact on chemically reactive carreau nanofluid heat-mass transfer over stretching sheet with convective heat condition

The present study focuses on the physical significance of heat generation and chemical reaction on Carreau nanofluid with convective heat conditions. Heat transfer is characterized using convective boundary conditions. The governing partial differential equations (PDEs) are transformed into ordinary differential equations (ODEs) by using well define stream functions and similarity transformations. Using a shooting methodology, the Keller-box method with Newton Raphson scheme is used to elaborate the numerical solutions of physical phenomena. Utilizing a similar technique to find the impact of physical parameter such as the production of heat δ, the rate of reaction Λ, Biot numbers γ, Brownian motion variable Nb, the thermophoresis parameters Nt, the Weissenberg quantity We, Prandtl number Pr, and Lewis number Le on velocity profile, temperature profile and mass transmission profile are determined graphically. The skin-friction coefficient −f″(0), local Nusselt −θ′(0), and Sherwood numbers −ϕ′(0) are analyzed numerically. Increment in fluid velocity and slip temperature are depicted with high Biot number. Maximum magnitude of fluid temperature and fluid concentration function are depicted at high value of temperature dependent density. The magnitude of heat and mass transportation enhanced with maximum choice of Brownian motion.

Soret and Dufour effects on MHD mixed convective unsteady flow over stretching sheet with variable fluid properties and convective boundary condition

In several industrial and engineering applications, variable fluid properties play a major role in flow and heat transport processes. The goal of this communication is to analyse the Soret and Dufour effects for an unsteady MHD flow past a stretching sheet under the influence of temperature-dependent viscosity and thermal conductivity along with the convective boundary condition. The governing partial differential equations are transformed into nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equations with the help of similarity transformations, and a numerical analysis is done by using bvp4c, MATLAB’s built-in solver. The flow properties and heat transfer characteristics have been depicted graphically and numerically. Results show that the wall temperature gradient improves by about 8.5%, while the temperature of the fluid near the stretching sheet significantly improves upon increasing the Biot number. Employing fluids with higher viscosity and thermal conductivity consequently leads to a reduction of the wall temperature gradient by about 0.3% and 10.7%, respectively. Also, as the unsteadiness parameter increases, the wall-skin friction, heat and mass transfer rates significantly rise by about 10.4%, 4.4%, and 9.8%, respectively. Further, to verify the accuracy of the generated results, the computed results have been compared with published literature.

Bernstein operational matrix of differentiation to analyze the conductive, convective, and radiative non-linear sublimation model with temperature-dependent internal heat generation

Theoretical modeling of solid-vapor phase change process, known as sublimation, is of much interest in the pharmaceutical industry and freeze-drying technology. While past theoretical studies on sublimation assume that the phase change material (PCM) remains in direct contact with the heat source or sink with no heat loss due to the surrounding temperature, in most practical scenarios, PCM experiences less heat on its surface due to the loss of some amount of heat in the surrounding environment. Considering the impact of heat radiation on the porous surface is essential for ensuring the precision of the phase change process. The present study reports a theoretical model of a sublimation problem where heat generation is in proportion to the local temperature and loss of heat due to thermal radiation occurs in the porous medium. In connection with thermal radiation, a convective boundary condition is assumed at the surface of the porous body. The solution of the non-linear mathematical model is determined numerically via the Bernstein operational matrix of differentiation method. It is found that temperature-dependent heat generation enhances the temperature within the porous medium and thus, the rate of sublimation increases, while it is delayed due to heat loss through the radiation.

Investigating thermal conduction dynamics in ternary Carreau–Yasuda nanofluids under convective boundary conditions and exponential heat source/sink effects

The analysis of the Carreau–Yasuda nanofluid (CYNF) across a stretching surface has practical applications in several fields, such as heat exchange, engineering, and material science. Scholars may discover novel perspectives for increasing heat transfer performance, establishing advanced materials, and enhancing the efficiency of multiple engineering systems by studying the behavior of CYNF in this particular instance. The energy transfer through trihybrid CYNF flow with the effect of magnetic dipole across a stretching sheet is examined in the present study. The ternary hybrid nanofluid (THNF) has been prepared by the addition of ternary nanoparticles (NPs) in the water (50%) and ethylene glycol (50%). Titanium dioxide (TiO2), silicon dioxide (SiO2), and aluminum oxide (Al2O3) are used in base fluid. The fluid velocity and heat transfer are examined under the impact of Darcy–Forchheimer, chemical reaction, convective condition, activation energy, and exponential heat source. The fluid flow has been stated in form of velocity, energy, and concentration equations. The set of modeled equations is simplified to non-dimensional form of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) by using similarity substitutions. Numerically, the system of lowest order ODEs is calculated through the parametric continuation method. It has been noticed that the temperature field augments against the variation of viscous dissipation and heat source term. Furthermore, the magnetic dipole has significant impact to enhance the thermal curve of THNF whereas falloffs the velocity profile. It can be noticed that the energy propagation rate enhances with the rising numbers of ternary NPs, from 1.22% to 5.98% (nanofluid), 2.30% to 9.61% (hybrid nanofluid), and 3.23% to 11.12% (trihybrid nanofluid).

Viscosity models of tri-hybrid non-Newtonian nanofluid with Cattaneo–Christov heat flux, thermal radiation, Ohmic heating and convective boundary condition

PurposeThis study is to examine the impact of viscous dissipation, thermal radiation and Ohmic heating on the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow with thermal and mass transport over a horizontally stretching surface. Cattaneo–Christov heat flux model on a non-Newtonian viscous fluid along with two viscosity models and convective boundary condition has been employed. Tri-hybrid nanofluid has been used to increase thermal performance.Design/methodology/approachGoverning mathematical model has been transposed into a dimensionless system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) by applying suitable similarity transformation. Numerical solution has been found by applying the bvp4c shooting method in MATLAB software.FindingsVelocity and thermal profiles of Model-I dominate the profiles of Model-II whereas opposite behavior is noticed for concentration profiles. It is concluded that there is an increase in temperature due to thermal radiation, viscous dissipation and convective boundary condition.Originality/valueThe novelty of presented work is to examine the impact of Ohmic heating, viscous dissipation, thermal radiation, chemical reaction and two models of viscosity on Cattaneo–Christov heat flux model of tri-hybrid non-Newtonian nanofluid with convective boundary constraint. The accuracy and effectiveness of presented model have been compared with already published research.

Tangent hyperbolic MHD nanoliquids on non-isothermal stretched sheets: Analyzing the impact of transport parameters, variable fluid properties and convective boundary conditions

The key focus of this research is to look at how tangent hyperbolic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) nano-liquids move in a non-isothermal coagulated stretched sheet. In this study, we intend to explore how fluid behavior responds to alternations in transport physical parameters. The coagulated sheet is subjected to two distinct boundary conditions to inspect the heat and mass transport rate of the nano liquid. The convective heat boundary condition (CBC) and mass-convective boundary condition (MCBC) are employed to specify the physical conditions at the boundaries of the problem domain. The boundary conditions, responsible for regulating heat flow and mass transfer rates, play a crucial role in shaping the liquid’s behavior. Using a similarity solution, the partial differential equation describing the flow of mass and heat within the system transforms into an interconnected network of non-linear ordinary differential equations. These mathematical equations are subsequently figured out using a numerical finite difference method. This study additionally examines the correlation between thermophoresis and Brownian motion, two fundamental concepts in the dynamics of colloidal suspensions. The study’s findings indicate that the temperature profile increases in all scenarios when the variable thermal conductivity and variable viscosity parameters are increased. In contrast, for the same parameters, the velocity profile is decreased. Further, increasing wall thickness reduces heat dissipation; consequently, the temperature profile similarly affects the velocity power index. The Biot number improves the rates of temperature transfer. These results underscore the significant influence of these parameters in predicting the behavior of MHD tangent hyperbolic nanofluids. This study elucidates the intricate interaction among different physical parameters in the dynamics of nano liquids, which holds significant implications for various industrial applications.

Numerical Heat Transfer Analysis of Carreau Nanofluid Flow over Curved Stretched Surface with Nonlinear Effects and Viscous Dissipation.

The article presents a comprehensive study that thoroughly assesses the effects of Carreau fluid flow over a curved stretch surface. The study meticulously considers various factors, including nonlinear thermal radiation, convective boundary conditions, viscous dissipation, thermophoresis, Brownian motion, and nonlinear mixed convection. By using similarity variables, the problem's governing equations are transformed from nonlinear partial differential equations to nonlinear ordinary differential equations, and then the shooting method is applied to obtain the results. The study also rigorously examines the effect of modifying flow factors on velocity, temperature, and concentration in shear-thickening situations through graphical assessment. Furthermore, according to the corresponding values, a table is provided with data on skin friction, Nusselt, and Sherwood numbers. This study offers new perspectives on the complex mechanisms of Carreau fluids flowing over curved surfaces, with potential applications in materials engineering and fluid mechanics.

Entropy optimization of MHD second-grade nanofluid thermal transmission along stretched sheet with variable density and thermal-concentration slip effects

The goal of present investigation is to explore the influence of exponential variable density and entropy optimization on second-grade nanofluid heating efficiency and mass-concentration transmission along extended surface using external magnetic-field and temperature-concentration slip effects. To enhance the motion of nanoparticles and thermal efficiency, the influence of exponential form of temperature-based density on magnetically charged second-grade nanomaterial is main novelty of this research. For higher temperature difference, the entropy optimization is used. The defined formulation of stream functions and similarities are used to convert leading second-grade nanofluid model into ordinary differential form. The efficient Keller box method and Newton Raphson technique are applied to compute numerical results. The final algebraic equations are solved through global matrix for unknown physical quantities. The consequence of all physical constraints on velocity/U profile, temperature/θ field, concentration/ϕ shapes, skin friction coefficient, Nusselt and Sherwood number are analyzed pictorially and numerically. The following range of parameters 0.1 ≤ ≤ 2.0, 0.0 ≤ ≤ 1.2, 0.1 ≤ ≤ 2.0, 0.07 ≤ ≤ 7.0, 0.01 ≤ ≤ 0.8, 0.01 ≤ ≤ 0.9 is used. It is found that velocity field increases with maximum amplitude as variable density, magnetic force and temperature-slip constraint. It is noted that the slip behavior in temperature field and concentration field are increased with convective boundary conditions. It is depicted that local Nusselt quantity and local Sherwood quantity increases as buoyancy force and Prandtl coefficient increases.

Lattice Boltzmann Modeling of Forced Imbibition Dynamics in Dual-Wetted Porous Media

Forced imbibition dynamics are critical for enhancing recovery rates in reservoirs, as efficient fluid displacement directly impacts resource extraction. This study employs the Zou-He velocity boundary condition and a modified convective boundary condition (mCBC) within the multi-component Shan-Chen lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), thus facilitating unobstructed flow of multi-component fluids at the outlet while maintaining constant outlet pressure. The model's validity was established through outflow tests of immiscible droplets in channels. Its accuracy was further confirmed by comparing results from forced imbibition dynamics tests in dual-wetted pores with theoretical predictions. A symmetrical porous medium was constructed using the stacking method, achieving dual wettability by fixing the contact angle in the upper region and varying it in the lower region. We performed 20 simulation sets under unfavorable viscosity ratios and varying capillary numbers, focusing on overall displacement efficiency before and after breakthrough, and employing energy balance equations to evaluate the dominant forces. Results reveal that capillary forces predominantly dictate forced imbibition dynamics in low capillary number scenarios. In strongly wetted regions, the invading fluid fully occupies pore spaces; however, in weakly wetted regions, displacement efficiency significantly declines as wettability approaches neutrality, even nearing zero. As capillary numbers increase, viscous forces become more prominent, controlling dynamics and leading to fingering and trapping of defending fluids. In weakly wetted areas, the increasing influence of viscous forces enhances fluid displacement, resulting in significant improvements in overall displacement efficiency compared to conditions dominated by capillary forces.

Comparative analysis of non‐newtonian fluids over an exponentially stretching sheet with convective boundaries

AbstractThe primary objective of this research is to explore the behavior of several non‐Newtonian fluids, including Casson, Williamson, and Maxwell fluids, over an exponentially stretching sheet considering an inclined magnetic field into account. Non‐Newtonian fluids can be encountered in many industrial and biological applications. They differentiate themselves by their sophisticated viscosity and flow properties. For the purpose of optimizing applications like coating technologies, bioengineering, and polymer processing, it is essential to comprehend their flow dynamics. This work illuminates these fluids' behaviors under convective boundary conditions, which is important for numerous industrial processes. Due to the convective boundary conditions, heat transfer at the sheet is affected by the surrounding fluid. The dominating flow field's nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) are synthesized into a system of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) using appropriate similarity transformations, and the resulting equations are then numerically solved using the BVP4C solver in MATLAB software. To demonstrate the behaviors of velocity, temperature, and concentration, a parametric research has been attempted. Significant parameter's effect on velocity, temperature, concentration, skin friction coefficient, Nusselt number, and Sherwood number have been investigated, and numerical findings are shown graphically. The numerical data is validated to previously published results on a variety of particular instances and found to be in great agreement. For varying values of the porosity parameter, Darcy‐Forchheimer parameter, and magnetic field, the fluid velocity falls. It is claimed that as the Forchheimer number and the porosity parameter expands, the momentum boundary layer thickness and the velocity profile diminishes. Furthermore, at the maximum levels of Schmidt number, the temperature profile rises synchronously, although the concentration profile reflects the flip pattern.

Numerical illustration using finite difference method for the transient flow through porous microchannel and statistical interpretation of entropy using response surface methodology

The current article discloses the influence of the hyperbolic tangent nanofluid on time dependent flow through a microchannel when a magnetic field is applied. The porous medium was incorporated using the Darcy–Forchheimer model. The chemical reaction is explained by Arrhenius activation energy. Temperature is determined by convective boundary conditions. The irreversibility occurring in the flow is analyzed. The modeled problem gives rise to partial differential equations, which are computed by finite difference method. Response surface methodology, an optimization technique, is used to attain the optimal conditions for entropy generated for the flow of fluid. Results of the analysis reveal that concentration decreases with the rise in reaction rate parameter and increases with activation energy parameter. Prandtl and Eckert numbers, with their increase, enhance entropy, and fluid friction irreversibility is at its highest. Perfect co-relation is attained for the model by the response surface methodology, with a co-relation coefficient of 100 %. The Weissenberg number is highly sensitive to change in the present modeling, followed by Darcy and Reynolds numbers. The Reynolds number and Darcy number show positive sensitivity, while the Weissenberg number shows negative sensitivity to the entropy generated.

Effects of time-dependent and radiation on a tri-hybrid nanofluid flowing on stretchable/shrinkable cylinders with irregular heat generation/absorption using Ohmic heating

This work focuses on the non-linear dynamics of unsteady tri-hybrid nanofluids inside a thermally radiative, expandable or contractible cylinder, which has been a consistent subject of interest for contemporary researchers. An advanced model is formulated to address the unsteady external flowing of a conductive 50 %:50 % by volume aqueous solution of ethylene glycol-based ternary hybrid nanofluid (THNF) over a linearly stretched cylindrical structure, considering the significant applications of an anti-freeze agent in industrial, construction, nuclear, and mechanical domains. The proposed tri-hybrid nanomaterials consist of cobalt magnetite, titania, and magnesium oxide nanoparticles. The heat transfer rate is analyzed concerning viscous dissipation, Ohmic heating, and convective boundary conditions. This research examines the effects of magnetic and induced electric fields. The non-dimensional similarity model for the controlling partial differential system is derived using appropriate transformations and solved by the homotopy analysis technique (HAM) to get series solutions. In contrast to porosity and magnetic characteristics, the flow rate increases with increasing unsteadiness and electric factors. Close to the surface, the Nusselt number rises with an increasing unsteadiness parameter, but skin frictions diminishes. THNF has been shown to significantly enhance the cooling of cylindrical conduits and mechanical antifreeze agents.

The nanoparticles aggregation aspects on the chemically reactive unsteady flow of alumina-water based nanofluid: A Keller box approach with applications of wavelet physics inspired neural networks

The present study explores the unsteady flow of a nanoliquid past a stretching cylinder with the consequence of heat source/sink and chemical reaction. Additionally, the effect of nanoparticle aggregation, convective boundary conditions, and magnetic field on the liquid flow is taken into consideration. Utilizing similarity variables, the modeled equations are transformed into dimensionless ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Further, the obtained ODEs are numerically solved by using the Keller box method. Moreover, the physics-informed neural network (PINN) is applied to analyze the flow, heat, and mass transport features. Graphical illustrations are used to display the influence of various parameters on the velocity, concentration, and temperature profiles for aggregation and without aggregation cases. As the value of the magnetic parameter increases, the temperature and concentration profile upsurge, but the reverse trend can be seen in the velocity profile. The concentration and temperature profiles rise as the unsteadiness parameter increases, but the velocity profile declines. The concentration, velocity, and temperature profiles are strengthened by an improvement in the curvature parameter value. The intensification in the values of the chemical reaction parameter declines the concentration.

Numerical Study of the 3D MHD Radiative Flow of Williamson Nanofluid with Variable Characteristics Over a Double Stretching Sheet

The current study investigates the influence of variable thermal conductivity and mass conductivity on 3D MHD. The significance of this study lies in mass diffusion on a three-dimensional Williamson nanofluid fluid flow over a double stretched sheet. When thermal radiation and Hall current is present, the heat transfer process is explored to see how chemical reactions affect heat and mass transmission. Additional phenomena, such as momentum slip and convective boundary conditions, contribute to the model's uniqueness. The problem formulation becomes ordinary differential equations with application of the Von Karman similarity variable. Use of the bvp4c function in yields a numerical solution for the system of differential equations. Using MATLAB’s bvp4c function, a numerical solution to the differential equation system is obtained. A graphic is used to discuss the overall result of several metrics compared to the involved profiles. It is believed that as temperature-dependent thermal conductivity and viscosity increase, so does the temperature field. When the Williamson fluid and magnetic parameters rise, the velocity field decays in the x- and y-axis directions. To support the identified issue, a comparison between the current inquiry and a previously published work is also included.

Analysis of transient heat conduction in tubes under convective boundary conditions

AbstractIn this work, six analytical solutions are given to estimate the energy exchange by transient conduction in pipes with convection conditions. The developed models were adjusted for an interval from 0.2 to 0.8, dimensionless Fourier (Fo) and Biot (Bi) numbers, from 0.05 to 50 and 0.005 to 50, respectively. In each case, 616 tests of temperature distributions were computed using the Heisler approximate method (HAM) and the exact models proposed, for different combinations of . For the comparison made between the analytical solutions and the HAM, 3696 tests were used, detecting that the HAM correlates with the analytical method with an average deviation of and for 71.2%, and 90.4% of the different values of combinations evaluated. The best fit was found for Case 5, with a mean deviation of and for 81.1% and 92.3% of the data used, respectively, while the weaker fit was detected for Case 2, with a mean deviation of and for 67.9% and 88.2% of the available tests.

Convective heat transfer in Brinkman–Darcy–Kelvin–Voigt fluid with couple stress and generalized Maxwell–Cattaneo law

This article investigates thermal convection in Kelvin–Voigt fluids saturating a Brinkman–Darcy-type porous medium. We examine the linear (stationary and oscillatory), nonlinear, and unconditional nonlinear stability of this fluid under the generalized Maxwell–Cattaneo law with couple stress effects. Using the normal mode technique, we calculate the critical Rayleigh number for the linear stability under stress-free boundary conditions for both stationary and oscillatory convection. Additionally, we employ the energy method to determine the critical Rayleigh number for nonlinear and unconditional nonlinear stabilities under the same boundary conditions. All critical values were determined numerically, and various graphs were plotted to illustrate the results. Our findings reveal that a higher couple stress parameter leads to increased critical Rayleigh numbers for stationary, oscillatory, and nonlinear stability, indicating greater fluid stability and reduced susceptibility to convection. Additionally, the Kelvin–Voigt parameter significantly affects oscillatory convection, though it remains crucial within the nonlinear stability framework. These findings provide a detailed understanding of the stability behavior in this complex fluid system.

Comparative analysis of varied thermal conductivity and viscosity models in a hybrid nanofluid flow - a non-similar solution

ABSTRACT We aim to investigate the flow of an ethylene glycol-based hybrid nanofluid over a horizontal surface with a free stream velocity. To assess the viscosity and thermal conductivity of nanoparticles with various shapes, we employed the Brinkman, Timofeeva, and Yamada Ota unit cell models. The study explores heat transfer in the flow system considering the effects of viscous and ohmic dissipations, linear radiative heat flux, and heat generation under convective boundary conditions. A non-similar system is developed using appropriate non-similarity transformations up to the third-level truncation and numerically solved using the bvp4c algorithm. The novelty of the proposed model lies in obtaining the non-similar solution and incorporating the Brinkman, Timofeeva, and Yamada Ota unit cell models. The results indicated that the Brinkman viscosity model resulted in an increase in the wall heat transfer rate with a rise in particle volume fraction. It is also inferred that platelet-shaped nanoparticles exhibit a significantly higher heat transfer rate compared to spherical-shaped nanoparticles.

The governing differential equations of the current study are modelled and changed into their non-dimensional form by employing suitable similarity variables. The finite difference method (FDM) is also used to numerically solve the obtained dimensionless equations. The influence of many factors on the several profiles is portrayed with graphical representations. The outcome of the unsteadiness and porosity parameters on the velocity profile with time coordinate is depicted. The increase in the radiation parameter and Biot number upsurges the thermal profile.
