Controlled shifting of attention in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder through a dichotic listening paradigm

The dichotic listening (DL) task was developed originally to examine bottom-up or “automatic” information processing. More recently, however, it has been used as a tool in the study of top-down or “controlled” information processing. This has been done by including forced-choice conditions, wherein the examinee is required to focus attention on one or the other ear. It has been widely utilized with patients with schizophrenia, who exhibit rather severe deficits in managing their attention, but not with other patient groups, such as patients with bipolar disorder. In the present study, we examined potential performance similarities in the DL listening task. In total, the sample consisted of 38 patients with schizophrenia, 20 patients with psychotic bipolar disorder and 35 healthy individuals, who performed a DL task with verbal stimuli once at the beginning of their hospitalization and again on the last day before discharge. Our findings indicated that both patient groups showed similarly diminished performance when compared to healthy participants at both times of administration. Symptom improvement between the two evaluations did not significantly influence performance in the DL task. In conclusion, impaired automated and controlled information processing appears to be a common deficit in both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Contributions from specific and general factors to unique deficits: two cases of mathematics learning difficulties

Mathematics learning difficulties are a highly comorbid and heterogeneous set of disorders linked to several dissociable mechanisms and endophenotypes. Two of these endophenotypes consist of primary deficits in number sense and verbal numerical representations. However, currently acknowledged endophenotypes are underspecified regarding the role of automatic vs. controlled information processing, and their description should be complemented. Two children with specific deficits in number sense and verbal numerical representations and normal or above-normal intelligence and preserved visuospatial cognition illustrate this point. Child H.V. exhibited deficits in number sense and fact retrieval. Child G.A. presented severe deficits in orally presented problems and transcoding tasks. A partial confirmation of the two endophenotypes that relate to the number sense and verbal processing was obtained, but a much more clear differentiation between the deficits presented by H.V. and G.A. can be reached by looking at differential impairments in modes of processing. H.V. is notably competent in the use of controlled processing but has problems with more automatic processes, such as nonsymbolic magnitude processing, speeded counting and fact retrieval. In contrast, G.A. can retrieve facts and process nonsymbolic magnitudes but exhibits severe impairment in recruiting executive functions and the concentration that is necessary to accomplish transcoding tasks and word problem solving. These results indicate that typical endophenotypes might be insufficient to describe accurately the deficits that are observed in children with mathematics learning abilities. However, by incorporating domain-specificity and modes of processing into the assessment of the endophenotypes, individual deficit profiles can be much more accurately described. This process calls for further specification of the endophenotypes in mathematics learning difficulties.

Neural Correlates of Conflict Control on Facial Expressions with A Flanker Paradigm

Conflict control is an important cognitive control ability and it is also crucial for human beings to execute conflict control on affective information. To address the neural correlates of cognitive control on affective conflicts, the present study recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) during a revised Eriksen Flanker Task. Participants were required to indicate the valence of the central target expression while ignoring the flanker expressions in the affective congruent condition, affective incongruent condition and neutral condition (target expressions flanked by scramble blocks). Behavioral results manifested that participants exhibited faster response speed in identifying neutral target face when it was flanked by neutral distractors than by happy distractors. Electrophysiological results showed that happy target expression induced larger N2 amplitude when flanked by sad distractors than by happy distractors and scramble blocks during the conflict monitoring processing. During the attentional control processing, happy target expression induced faster P3 response when it was flanked by happy distractors than by sad distractors, and sad target expression evoked larger P3 amplitude when it was flanked by happy distractors comparing with sad distractors. Taken together, the current findings of temporal dynamic of brain activity during cognitive control on affective conflicts shed light on the essential relationship between cognitive control and affective information processing.

Strongly coupled slow-light polaritons in one-dimensional disordered localized states

Cavity quantum electrodynamics advances the coherent control of a single quantum emitter with a quantized radiation field mode, typically piecewise engineered for the highest finesse and confinement in the cavity field. This enables the possibility of strong coupling for chip-scale quantum processing, but till now is limited to few research groups that can achieve the precision and deterministic requirements for these polariton states. Here we observe for the first time coherent polariton states of strong coupled single quantum dot excitons in inherently disordered one-dimensional localized modes in slow-light photonic crystals. Large vacuum Rabi splittings up to 311 μeV are observed, one of the largest avoided crossings in the solid-state. Our tight-binding models with quantum impurities detail these strong localized polaritons, spanning different disorder strengths, complementary to model-extracted pure dephasing and incoherent pumping rates. Such disorder-induced slow-light polaritons provide a platform towards coherent control, collective interactions, and quantum information processing.

Control Information and Data Processing of Vehicle based on Global Position System

A testing system based on Data Stream function of vehicle electronic control system was developed to test the city bus driving cycle. A mufti-function Vehicle Traveling Data Recorder based on GPS which can realize the vehicles positioning and navigating was investigated. The system included data acquisition module, display module, print module, GPS module, communication module and so on. This system adopts the FRAM memory as the storing equipment in which the automobile realized the real-time data store. It could realize the real-time data transmission of automobile and remote controlling by M22 GPRS module which includes TCP/IP. Optimizing of Muti-Energy power train control strategy was the key technical of Hybrid Electric Vehicle. Three kind structure of HEV and their control strategy were investigated, Series Hybrid Electric Vehicle, Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicle, and PSHEV. Considering about driving cycle of CYC_NEDC and CYC_HWFET, three control strategies such as Electric Assistant Control, Simulation and experiment evaluation for regenerative braking of hybrid electric vehicle was investigated. The test result shows that the regenerative current in the road test and dynamometer test had little difference. The result shows that fuel consumption value got by the chassis dynamometer test evaluation method was closer to the value got by outdoor road test method.

Prefrontal cortex and neural mechanisms of executive function

Executive function is a product of the coordinated operation of multiple neural systems and an essential prerequisite for a variety of cognitive functions. The prefrontal cortex is known to be a key structure for the performance of executive functions. To accomplish the coordinated operations of multiple neural systems, the prefrontal cortex must monitor the activities in other cortical and subcortical structures and control and supervise their operations by sending command signals, which is called top-down signaling. Although neurophysiological and neuroimaging studies have provided evidence that the prefrontal cortex sends top-down signals to the posterior cortices to control information processing, the neural correlate of these top-down signals is not yet known. Through use of the paired association task, it has been demonstrated that top-down signals are used to retrieve specific information stored in long-term memory. Therefore, we used a paired association task to examine the neural correlates of top-down signals in the prefrontal cortex. The preliminary results indicate that 32% of visual neurons exhibit pair-selectivity, which is similar to the characteristics of pair-coding activities in temporal neurons. The latency of visual responses in prefrontal neurons was longer than bottom-up signals but faster than top-down signals in inferior temporal neurons. These results suggest that pair-selective visual responses may be top-down signals that the prefrontal cortex provides to the temporal cortex, although further studies are needed to elucidate the neural correlates of top-down signals and their characteristics to understand the neural mechanism of executive control by the prefrontal cortex.

Amplification and suppression of system-bath-correlation effects in an open many-body system

Understanding the rich dynamics of open quantum systems is of fundamental interest to quantum control and quantum information processing. By considering an open system of many identical two-level atoms interacting with a common bath, we show that effects of system-bath correlations are amplified in a many-body system via the generation of a short time scale inversely proportional to the number of atoms. Effects of system-bath correlations are therefore considerable even when each individual atom interacts with the bath weakly. We further show that correlation-induced dynamical effects may still be suppressed via the dynamical decoupling approach, but they present a challenge for quantum state protection as the number of atom increases.

Attention in patients with chronic schizophrenia: Deficit in inhibitory control and positive symptoms

Background and Objectives: Attention is a central mechanism controlling information processing, activating and inhibiting processes, and forming a complex sys- tem including diferent networks in specific areas of the brain1. To correctly assess the role of attention in schizophrenia it is necessary to discriminate its different attentional com- ponents, which may by selectively altered. Attention span, focused attention, selective at- tention, sustained attention and inhibitory response, were assessed in patients with chron- ic schizophrenia and healthy matched controls. Methods: The study included 32 patients diagnosed with chronic schizophrenia and 32 healthy subjects. The groups were matched in age, sex, and level of education. Symptom severity (positive symptoms, negative symptoms, and general psychopathology) was as- sessed with the Scale for the Assessment of Positive and Negative Symptoms (SAPS and SANS). Attentional components were measured by Forward Digit Span, Symbol Search, Digit Symbol Coding, Stroop Test and Picture Completion. Results: Schizophrenic patients exhibited lower attentional scores in all tests compared to the control group. Inhibitory control and sustained attention were the most affected traits in schizophrenic patients. An inverse correlation was observed between inhibitory control and delusions and disorganized thinking. No significant correlations were ob- served between negative symptoms and attentional performance. Conclusions: The pattern of results obtained in this paper evidences the role of an in- hibitory control deficit in patients with chronic schizophrenia that could also be involved in other attentional and cognitive failures, and also be connected to positive symptoms.

Behavior-dependent specialization of identified hippocampal interneurons

A large variety of GABAergic interneurons control information processing in the hippocampal circuits governing the formation of neuronal representations. Whether distinct hippocampal interneuron types contribute differentially to information processing during behavior is not known. We employed a new technique for recording and labeling interneurons and pyramidal cells in drug-free, freely moving rats. Recorded parvalbumin-expressing basket interneurons innervated somata and proximal pyramidal cell dendrites, whereas nitric oxide synthase- and neuropeptide Y-expressing ivy cells provided synaptic and extrasynaptic dendritic modulation. Basket and ivy cells showed distinct spike-timing dynamics, firing at different rates and times during theta and ripple oscillations. Basket, but not ivy, cells changed their firing rates during movement, sleep and quiet wakefulness, suggesting that basket cells coordinate cell assemblies in a behavioral state-contingent manner, whereas persistently firing ivy cells might control network excitability and homeostasis. Different interneuron types provide GABA to specific subcellular domains at defined times and rates, thereby differentially controlling network activity during behavior.

From classic observability to a simple fuzzy observability for fuzzy discrete-event systems

In order to determine uncertainties from restricted available information, fuzzy discrete-event systems (FDESs), or fuzzy discrete-event dynamic systems (FDEDSs), were recently proposed. These frameworks include fuzzy states and events occurring simultaneously with different membership degrees. Fuzzy states and events have been used to describe uncertainties that occur often in practical problems, such as treatment planning for HIV/AIDS patients, sensory information processing for robotic control, and fault diagnosis problems. In order to measure information associated with FDESs or FDEDSs, the classical discrete event system (DES) observability has been turned into fuzzy observability for FDESs or FDEDSs. The newly proposed method allows ease of defining degrees of observability so that uncertainties in FDESs or FDEDSs can be dealt with effectively. This gives an opportunity to design better decision-making systems. To calculate the observability degree, a simple fuzzy observability checking method is introduced, and two examples are elaborated upon to illustrate the presented method. Finally, the newly proposed method is tested on a heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system.

Optical Gating of Photosensitive Synthetic Ion Channels

Abstract4‐oxo‐4‐(pyren‐4‐ylmethoxy) butanoic acid is used as a photolabile protecting group to show the optical gating of nanofluidic devices based on synthetic ion channels. The inner surface of the channels is decorated with monolayers of photolabile hydrophobic molecules that can be removed by irradiation, which leads to the generation of hydrophilic groups. This process can be exploited in the UV‐light‐triggered permselective transport of ionic species in aqueous solution through the channels. The optical gating of a single conical nanochannel and multichannel polymeric membranes is characterised experimentally and theoretically by means of current–voltage and selective permeation measurements, respectively. It is anticipated that the integration of nanostructures into multifunctional devices is feasible and can readily find applications in light‐induced controlled release, sensing, and information processing.

Reorganizing the Boundaries of Trust: From Discrete Alternatives to Hybrid Forms

In this essay I propose that trust be reconceptualized as a family of hybrid form concepts. I argue that trust and risk frequently co-occur and overlap. In conjunction, the concepts produce hybrid social judgments that combine elements of trust and risk. The point of overlap among trust and risk centers on the choice to be vulnerable to the decisions and actions of another party. However, the types of decision making and information processing involved represent important differences between the two types of social judgments. Whereas risk involves probabilistic decision making and more controlled information processing, trust involves heuristic decision making and more automatic information processing. I conclude with a discussion of new directions for organizational research based on the notion of hybrid forms of trust.

Inhibition to excitation ratio regulates visual system responses and behavior in vivo

The balance of inhibitory to excitatory (I/E) synaptic inputs is thought to control information processing and behavioral output of the central nervous system. We sought to test the effects of the decreased or increased I/E ratio on visual circuit function and visually guided behavior in Xenopus tadpoles. We selectively decreased inhibitory synaptic transmission in optic tectal neurons by knocking down the γ2 subunit of the GABA(A) receptors (GABA(A)R) using antisense morpholino oligonucleotides or by expressing a peptide corresponding to an intracellular loop of the γ2 subunit, called ICL, which interferes with anchoring GABA(A)R at synapses. Recordings of miniature inhibitory postsynaptic currents (mIPSCs) and miniature excitatory PSCs (mEPSCs) showed that these treatments decreased the frequency of mIPSCs compared with control tectal neurons without affecting mEPSC frequency, resulting in an ∼50% decrease in the ratio of I/E synaptic input. ICL expression and γ2-subunit knockdown also decreased the ratio of optic nerve-evoked synaptic I/E responses. We recorded visually evoked responses from optic tectal neurons, in which the synaptic I/E ratio was decreased. Decreasing the synaptic I/E ratio in tectal neurons increased the variance of first spike latency in response to full-field visual stimulation, increased recurrent activity in the tectal circuit, enlarged spatial receptive fields, and lengthened the temporal integration window. We used the benzodiazepine, diazepam (DZ), to increase inhibitory synaptic activity. DZ increased optic nerve-evoked inhibitory transmission but did not affect evoked excitatory currents, resulting in an increase in the I/E ratio of ∼30%. Increasing the I/E ratio with DZ decreased the variance of first spike latency, decreased spatial receptive field size, and lengthened temporal receptive fields. Sequential recordings of spikes and excitatory and inhibitory synaptic inputs to the same visual stimuli demonstrated that decreasing or increasing the I/E ratio disrupted input/output relations. We assessed the effect of an altered I/E ratio on a visually guided behavior that requires the optic tectum. Increasing and decreasing I/E in tectal neurons blocked the tectally mediated visual avoidance behavior. Because ICL expression, γ2-subunit knockdown, and DZ did not directly affect excitatory synaptic transmission, we interpret the results of our study as evidence that partially decreasing or increasing the ratio of I/E disrupts several measures of visual system information processing and visually guided behavior in an intact vertebrate.

Perceptions of Control Facilitate Reading Engagement

This study examined how global locus of control influences children's reading engagement or reading involvement and interest in stories. It is based on locus of control, interest, and dual information processing theories. One hundred and seventy students from schools in the northeastern United States, ages 9 to 12, participated. They completed a preread survey measuring autonomy and general reading interest and then read one of three randomly selected stories, followed by answering postexposure reading engagement questions. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling revealed that general perceptions of internal locus of control influenced reading involvement, which in turn predicted liking the story and interest in reading more such stories.

Smooth composite pulses for high-fidelity quantum information processing

We present a systematic SU(2) approach for construction of composite sequences of pulses with smooth temporal shapes that produce high-fidelity two-state excitation profiles. This makes possible the application of composite pulses to quantum control and quantum information processing with short and ultrashort laser pulses. We present an exact analytic formula for the composite phases for arbitrarily accurate broadband pulses and examples of narrowband, passband, and fractional-$\ensuremath{\pi}$ pulses as well as composite pulses with detuning compensation.

Motion Control System Design of a Humanoid Robot Based on Stereo Vision

Vision is an important means of the humanoid robot to get external environmental information; vision system is an important part of humanoid robot. The system of a humanoid robot with the functions of visual perception and object manipulation is very complex because the body of the humanoid robot possesses many joint units and sensors. Two computers linked by Memolink communication unit is adopted to meet the needs of real time motion control and visual information processing tasks. The motion control system included coordination control computer, the distributed DSP joint controllers, DC motor drivers and sensors. Linux and real-time RT-Linux OS are used as the operating system to achieve the real-time control capability.

Integration of dynamic information for visuomotor control in young adults with developmental coordination disorder

We examined the hypothesis that developmental coordination disorder (DCD) consists of a poor integration of distal preparatory visual information with the visual information that arises during movement execution. We set up a steering task where the action goal was to steer smoothly on a virtual winding course under conditions that manipulated the availability and timing of visual information. Participants were 20 young adults who had been diagnosed with DCD in their childhood and 20 typically developing age-matched controls. On a simple tracking task, participants with DCD were slower and more variable than controls. The group differences dissipated, however, when the display highlighted the directional changes necessary within the next 500 ms. When the latter condition was modified to also include the full layout of the course, however, the performance of the DCD group once again decreased. This result could not be attributed to a simple distraction effect. The results suggest that distinct neural mechanisms are associated with the processing of fast visual information for online control and longer-term action preparation based on spatial layout. In skilled action, cerebellar and parietal areas process information effectively and their outputs are integrated into one smooth movement. Because the DCD group showed difficulties in steering when both types of information were present, it is likely that this integration is suboptimal.

Optimal control landscape for the generation of unitary transformations with constrained dynamics

The reliable and precise generation of quantum unitary transformations is essential to the realization of a number of fundamental objectives, such as quantum control and quantum information processing. Prior work has explored the optimal control problem of generating such unitary transformations as a surface optimization problem over the quantum control landscape, defined as a metric for realizing a desired unitary transformation as a function of the control variables. It was found that under the assumption of non-dissipative and controllable dynamics, the landscape topology is trap-free, implying that any reasonable optimization heuristic should be able to identify globally optimal solutions. The present work is a control landscape analysis incorporating specific constraints in the Hamiltonian corresponding to certain dynamical symmetries in the underlying physical system. It is found that the presence of such symmetries does not destroy the trap-free topology. These findings expand the class of quantum dynamical systems on which control problems are intrinsically amenable to solution by optimal control.
