Emission Spectra of Dimethoxybenzenes by Controlled Electron Impact

Abstract The emission spectra of o-, m-, and p-dimethoxybenzenes under controlled electron impact excitation (200 eV) were measured in the 220–450 nm region at very low pressures. The photoemissions of the excited parent species and such fragment species as H, CH, CO, and CO+ were observed and assigned. The relative intensities of the photoemissions of the parent species were compared with those of the fluorescence spectra (photoexcitation) in an n-hexane solution. The excited parent species, H, and CH were concluded to be produced in one-electron processes; however, the CO+ species were assumed to be produced in both one- and two-electron processes, and the relative contributions are evaluated. It was concluded that the rate of the predissocation of o-dimethoxybenzene was faster than those of the other two isomers, and the observed characteristics of o-dimethoxybenzene had something to do with this faster rate.

Emission spectrum of naphthalene vapour by controlled electron impact

The emission spectrum of naphthalene excited by a controlled electron-beam of 60–470 eV at low pressures gave bands of the parent molecule (S 1 → S 0) and the fragment species (H, CH and C 4H + 2). The mechanism of the excitation and the photoemission is discussed.

Configuration interaction effects in Ar+ (on electron impact excitation)

The configuration mixing of the 3s3p6 2S1/2, 3s23p43d'2S1/2 and 3s23p44d' 2S1/2 states of Ar+ has been investigated using controlled electron impact excitation and detection of the optical radiation resulting from decay of the states. The coupling of the states is clearly demonstrated but the relative mixing coefficients differ from those obtained theoretically by Luyken (1972).

Emission Spectra of Carbon Disulfide, Hydrogen Sulfide, and Thiols by Controlled Electron Impact

Abstract The emission spectra in the 200–600 nm region produced by the controlled electron impact method were investigated in the vapor phase on hydrogen sulfide, carbon disulfide, methanethiol, and ethanethiol at low pressures. The photoemissions were observed and assigned for an excited parent molecule, molecular ions, and fragments, such as CS2, CS2+, H2S+, H, CH, CS, and HS+. The intensities of the photoemission of most of the species were found to increase linearly with both the electron beam current and the gas pressure, and these species were concluded to be produced in some one-electron unimolecular processes.

Emission Spectra of Benzonitrile, Aniline, and Nitrobenezene by Controlled Electron Impact

Abstract The emission spectra of benzonitrile, aniline, N,N-dimethylaniline, and nitrobenzene under controlled electron-impact excitation (60–300 eV) were investigated at a very low pressure. Bands of the parent molecules were observed in the 260–410 nm region on benzonitrile and anilines, and were assigned to the S1–S0 transitions. However, no emission of the parent molecule was observed on nitrobenzene and this was attributed to the spinorbit coupling effect of the nitro group and the predissociation of the excited parent molecule. Bands of the following fragment species were observed for all four compounds: H(Balmer series, CH(A2Δ2–X2II), and CN(B2Σ–X2Σ). In addition, NH(A3II–X3II) band on aniline and NO(A2Σ–X2II, B2II–X2II), CO(b3Σ–a3II), and CO+ (A2II–X2Σ, B2Σ–X2Σ) bands on nitrobenzene were observed. The linear relationships between the electron beam current and the emission intensities of the parent molecules and the fragment species indicated that most of the excited species were produced by primary electron-molecule collision processes (CN of anilines, CO, and CO+were found to be exceptional). The mechanism of the excitation and the fragmentation of the parent molecules and the comparison of the present spectra with those by discharge and by optical excitation were discussed. It was concluded that some excited species were produced through superexcited states.

Emission Spectra of Benzene, Toluene, and Xylenes by Controlled Electron Impact

Abstract The emission spectra of gaseous aromatic hydrocarbons under electron impact excitation (60–300 eV) were measured in the 220–450 nm region at very low pressures. A characteristic band was observed in all cases in the 240–340 nm region; this band was assigned to the transition from the lowest excited singlet state to the electronic ground state. Photoemissions from the fragment species, such as H (Balmer series) and CH (A→X, B→X), were also observed. The excited species were concluded, from the relations of the emission intensities to the electron-beam current and to the gas pressure, to be produced by one-electron processes. The relative intensity and the vibrational structure of the observed spectra were examined and compared with those of the fluorescence spectra produced by photo-excitation.

Emission Spectra of Aromatic Halides by Controlled Electron Impact

Abstract Fluorobenzene, chlorobenzene, and bromobenzene were excited at a very low pressure in the vapor phase by a controlled electron beam of 60–300 V. Their emission spectra were then measured and compared with those excited by the photon. Fluorobenzene showed a characteristic photoemission of the parent molecule in the 260–320 nm region. The band was assigned to the transition from the lowest excited state to the ground state, and its shape did not vary appreciably with the energy of the electron beam. Though the spectrum had some features of “resonance fluorescence,” the vibrational structure of the band was not identical with that of any of the spectra obtained by photon impact between 4.7–4.9 eV. This seems to indicate that the molecule gave different spectra according to the excitation energy. However, the excitation by 60 V electrons and that by 300 V electrons did not produce any remarkable difference in the spectra under the resolution of the spectrometer used. Other aromatic halides failed to show any characteristic band of the parent molecules; instead, they showed weak lines due to Cl+ or Br+ and pronounced bands due to HCl+ or HBr+. This result was ascribed to the spin-orbit coupling effect and the predissociation of the excited parent molecules.

EMISSION SPECTRA OF TOLUENE AND ANISOLE BY CONTROLLED ELECTRON IMPACT

Abstract The emission spectra of toluene and of anisole were observed by exciting them by controlled electron impact up to 300 V. A characteristic band of the aromatic hydrocarbon was observed in both cases.

Excitation processes in helium

An experimental study of the radiation emitted by helium under controlled electron impact is described. The observations are analyzed, together with those of previous workers, to yield values for the excitation functions of S, P and D states. The mechanism of excitation transfer between excited states is analysed in terms of radiative and collisional processes; cascade processes being found to be more important than has hitherto been assumed. The total inelastic (less ionization) cross-section at 108 eV is found to be 2·9 x 10 -17 cm 2 .

The Ionization of Carbon Monoxide by Controlled Electron Impact, Interpreted by the Mass Spectrograph

By using a mass spectrograph previously described, a study is made of the ionization processes occurring when CO molecules are ionized by electrons of definite energy. The variation of the relative intensities of the ions C${\mathrm{O}}^{+}$, ${\mathrm{C}}^{+}$ and ${\mathrm{O}}^{+}$ with changes of pressure and with changes of the electric fields has led to the conclusion that the principal processes occurring are: (1) CO = C${\mathrm{O}}^{+}$+${\mathrm{E}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$; (2) CO = ${\mathrm{O}}^{+}$+C+${\mathrm{E}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$; (3) CO = ${\mathrm{C}}^{+}$+O+${\mathrm{E}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$; (4) CO+C${\mathrm{O}}^{+}$ = C${\mathrm{O}}_{2}$+${\mathrm{C}}^{+}$. No negative nor doubly charged positive ions were found.
