Three-Phase Induction Motor Control and Monitoring Using VFD and ESP32 Based on Modbus RTU Protocol

The use of energy in industrial processes is required to be efficient to reduce production costs as low as possible. In general, an industry relies heavily on three-phase induction motors. In its operation, the induction motor is operated in such a way that the energy usage is not maximized, so it is more efficient. To achieve this goal, the industry has used VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) to regulate the speed of induction motors according to the desired needs as well as to avoid "magnetic weak and saturation" conditions in the motor. This paper presents a Learning module for control and monitoring of 3-phase induction motor using Microcontroller embedded WIFI (ESP32), a VFD, and Modbus RTU protocol. The existence of this learning module will be helpful to control and view the motor parameters globally and easily. The presence of Esp32 provides convenience and flexibility for control designers to provide a cheaper control system, more speed process (2 processor), and be adaptive to future needs. Another advantage of this design model is that a user is given a choice of two user friendly applications, namely WhatsApp and Blynk IoT for giving users or students more enjoyable in learning control engineering. However, selecting the type of access application in an industrial environment must be done appropriately by considering network latency, stability, safety, feasibility, and the capability to overcome potential server failures. Regarding the use of VFD on a three-phase induction motor, an initial testing should be done to determine the maximum frequency that can be applied to achieve the motor's nominal current according to its nameplate (in this experiment, the maximum motor frequency is 40 Hz). Such testing is necessary to avoid more severe damage and can extend the motor's operational lifespan.

DSP in the loop implementation of an improved sliding mode control for induction motor drive

This paper deals with the design and processor in the loop implementation of an improved sliding mode control of three-phase induction motor. Studied control strategy uses a state-space model expressed in the rotor flux frame. Proposed control strategy is designed in two steps based in cascaded method. This controller is based on new smooth functions replacing sign functions to reduce chattering phenomenon. This work integrates also a calculation of controller parameters to ensure set response times. It focuses on the study of these proposed techniques and their effect on motor waveforms. For code generation of the control algorithm, implementation and validation by processor in the loop technique we have created a platform based on MATLAB/Simulink with code composer studio as integrated development environment and the development board LAUNCHXL-F28069M from Texas instruments. Obtained results show that the proposed strategy reduces chattering using a simple algorithm.

One-Instant Flux Observer design for Three-Phase induction motor with reduced bound active load rejection speed controller.

Latency in flux observation has an adverse effect on the performance of observer-based field-oriented speed control for three-phase induction motor (IM). The reduction of the convergent rate of estimation errors could improve the performance of speed-controlled IM based on flux observers. The main contribution is to design a fast convergent flux observer, which provides bounded estimation error immediately after one instant of motor startup. The proposed flux observer fused barrier function adaptive mechanism with integral sliding mode control principle to yield BFISMO. Rigorous stability analysis has been conducted to achieve global flux estimation error ultimate boundedness. Moreover, three controllers have been designed. The first control design is devoted to flux control based on a backstepping controller, while the other two controllers' design is dedicated to rotor speed control of the motor. The speed controller is developed by combining the backstepping control with disturbance observers to estimate the unmatched load torque named quasi-sliding mode observer (QSMDO), and nonlinear disturbance observer (NLDO). Based on numerical simulations, the performance and efficacy of the proposed BFISMO have been assessed by conducting a comparison study to other observer techniques. The results showed the superiority of the proposed observer over the conventional versions.

Space vector modulation may be used to control the switches of a matrix converter, and by doing so, improve power factor.

Finite Control Set Model Predictive Field-Oriented Control For Three-Phase Induction Motor Drives

Field-oriented control is one of the well-established vector control strategies for induction motor drives. However, its cascaded structure and requirement of a modulator for constant switching frequency operations makes it complex and computationally expensive. Model predictive control (MPC) is a novel control strategy used for AC motor drives. In this paper, a finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) based field-oriented control (FOC) is presented. The Finite control set model predictive field-oriented control (FCS-MPFOC) utilizes a cost function that quantifies the error between the reference and anticipated current values for all the potential voltage vectors of the voltage source inverter. The voltage vector that generates the lowest value of the cost function is directly implemented on the inverter to produce the drive voltage. The efficiency of the proposed method is authenticated by using a three-phase induction motor, fed via a two-level three-phase voltage source inverter in the MATLAB/Simulink environment under various speeds, load torque, and model parameter mismatch situations. In order to authenticate the performance of the proposed strategy, it is compared with traditional model predictive torque control. Simulation results show that the proposed method performed significantly well in total current harmonic distortion, flux and torque ripples, switching frequency, and parameter variations.

Modified multistep model predictive control for three-phase induction motor drive system considering the common-mode voltage minimization

It is acknowledged that the common-mode voltage may have detrimental effects on an induction motor (IM) drive system if not properly addressed. Therefore, in this paper, a modified multistep model predictive control method for IM drive system considering the common-mode voltage minimization is proposed. This research uses a multi-objective cost function, before applying the Sphere Decoding Algorithm to find the optimal control input. The results show that the proposed control method not only reduces the common-mode voltage significantly but also mitigates the computational burden of the microprocessor without affecting the system performance. The proposed control method is simulated by MATLAB-Simulink for an IM drive system with an 11-level cascaded H-bridge inverter.

Variable Voltage Control of Three-Phase Induction Motor for Energy Saving

Energy saving is one of the most important factor for industrial and commercial applications. In the industries, Induction motors are the mostly preferred due to their reliability, robustness, price and rugged construction. The largest percentage of consumed energy in industrial is consumed by induction motors. So, Energy conservation in induction motor drive leads to reduction in power consumption and electricity cost. This paper describes energy saving technique for squirrel cage induction motor. The energy saving is achieved by controlling the voltage applied to the stator winding using the three phase AC voltage controller. The simulation verifications are done in MATLAB/Simulink. The results show that the proposed scheme gives rise to the considerable energy-savings The rated efficiency of an induction motor is high when it operates under the full load. In general, the rated efficiency is larger than 75%. Although, the operating efficiency of the induction motor drive system will be low if an induction motor is operating at light loads or does not selected correctly. So, that the improvement in the energy efficiency of induction motor drives refers to huge energy saving

A Comparative Study between V/F and IFOC Control for Three-Phase Induction Motor Drives

The voltage/frequency “(V/F) control” method is considered as widely used method in industrial application for control the induction motor (IM) due to its simplicity and lower the cost. The main problems in this method are the slow response, and it cannot be applied in the applications that required smooth speed control. To solve these problems, a roust control method of indirect field-oriented control (IFOC) was developed. In this paper, a comparative study of classical V/F control and IFOC of 3-ph IM is done. The principle action for both methods are studied and then they implemented and simulated using “MATLAB/Simulink” software for a 10 HP (7.457kw) 3-ph squirrel cage type IM. Besides, the sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) technique with a proportional-integral (PI) controller has been used to control the VSI inverter in the V/F method. While, the space vector PWM (SVPWM) technique has been used to control the VSI inverter in the IFOC method. The 3-ph IM has been achieved to its desired speed with good transient time and steady state response when the step change in the torque load has applied. Therefore, the IFOC method provides smooth speed control, high performance, and fast response under different dynamic conditions compared to classical V/F method.

Static and Dynamic Performance of Vector Control on Induction Motor with PID Controller: An Investigation on LabVIEW

A three-phase induction motor is often used in everyday life because of its high reliability. However, it is associated with some disadvantages, including difficulties in maintaining constant speed during load changes and speed regulation due to the decoupled system. Therefore, this study aims to adjust the three-phase induction motor control to become a separate amplifier DC motor by setting the vector control using the IFOC method, which changes the coupled to the decoupled system. The speed settings are equipped with a PID controller where its parameters, which are obtained using Ziegler Nichols, produce speed output with fast research time and small steady-state errors. This research was conducted to observe and analyze the performance of a controller based on the IFOC approach with a PID controller at speed differences, with static and dynamic conditions in the entire speed working area. In the first stage of the research, simulation is carried out with static conditions, namely changes in speed variations throughout the work area (low speed to high speed), the next stage is a simulation with dynamic conditions, which is to provide changes in the value of the load torque when the system is operating. The simulation result carried out with LabVIEW shows a response time of 1.13 ms, a settling time of 9.9 ms, and a steady error of 0.4% at the 500 Rpm set point. It also indicated dynamic characteristics with a recovery time of 4.9 ms at the 300 Rpm set point. When operated at low speed, IFOC with PID controller has a stable response. But In dynamic conditions, the use of a PID controller is considered unsuitable. This is because the PID controller is less fast and less robust in responding to the system when conditions change in the value of the load torque.

Moreover, Control is designed in LabVIEW, it is quite helpful to develop the circuit graphically and code is automatically written in the background to run on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The aim of this research is to study the impacts on diverse parameters during speed control of three phase induction machine with manipulation of GPIC. Solar technology is used as input source to drive the General-Purpose Inverter Controller (GPIC). Apart of this, impacts of modulation index and carrier frequency influencing the active, reactive and apparent power, temperature and power quality and current overshoot is analysed. MATLAB/Simulink and LabVIEW tools are used for simulation and results along with GPIC, Induction motor and solar panel as hardware.

Comparison of Conventional and Modified Direct Torque Control of Three-Phase Induction Motor Using Three-Level Flying Capacitor Inverter

The work presented in this paper aims to compare the effectiveness of different control strategies to improve the performance of the three-phase Induction Motor (IM). The Conventional Direct Torque Control (CDTC) was employed as the first strategy for driving the IM. This control strategy causes high ripples in the IM's torque and speed due to the hysteresis comparators and a variable switching frequency due to the look-up table. A modified DTC strategy based on Space Vector Modulation (DTC-SVM) was chosen as a second strategy to enhance the performance of the IM using the two-level inverter. This method, which leads to the reduction of the torque and speed ripples and achieves constant switching frequency. As the multi-level inverter becomes most popular than the two-level inverter, the third strategy is devoted to adopting the three-level flying capacitor inverter (TLFCMLI) -based DTC-SVM. The third strategy uses the method of mapping the multi-level space vector based on basic two-level SVM. Matlab/Simulink software package is utilized to implement the suggested controllers. Simulation results show that the DTC-SVM based on TLFCMLI significantly enhances the IM's performance compared with the other two strategies from the voltage and current profiles, torque, and speed points of view.

An Extended Kalman Filter, with pre-adjusted covariance matrices, applied to the sensorless speed control of three-phase induction motors

With the emergence of sensorless control methods, there was a need for the use of estimators and/or state observers to give it the robustness and precision required in the drive of induction motors. This work deals with the application of the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) in the estimation of rotor speed and position, aiming at the implementation of the indirect vector control technique in a sensorless speed control system for three-phase induction motors. The mathematical development of the system state variables associated with the EKF stochastic process is presented in this study, and point out its application under variable speed and load conditions, which are imposed on these motors in everyday life. The sensorless control strategy was tested through routine lines in the Matlab® software, simulating operating conditions of this type of engine, being proven its performance, as well as the convergence times consistent with the usual requirements of high performance systems. The main contributions of this work are the use of a reduced-order EKF (ROEKF) and the preset of covariance matrices to accelerate convergence in speed and position estimates for future implementations in currently accessible digital signal processors.

Real-Time Low-Cost Speed Monitoring and Control of Three-Phase Induction Motor via a Voltage/Frequency Control Approach

In this paper, a new design of a real-time low-cost speed monitoring and closed-loop control of the three-phase induction motor (IM) is proposed. The proposed solution is based on a voltage/frequency (V/F) control approach and a PI antiwindup regulator. It uses the Waijung Blockset which considerably alleviates the heaviness and the difficulty of the microcontroller’s programming task incessantly crucial for the implementation and the management of such complex applications. Indeed, it automatically generates C codes for many types of microcontrollers like the STM32F4 family, also used in this application. Furthermore, it offers a cost-effective design reducing the system components and increasing its efficiency. To prove the efficiency of the suggested design, not only simulation results are carried out for a wide range of variations in load and reference speed but also experimental assessment. The real-time closed-loop control performances are proved using the aMG SQLite Data Server via the UART port board, whereas Waijung WebPage Designer (W2D) is used for the web monitoring task. Experimental results prove the accuracy and robustness of the proposed solution.

Fault-Tolerant Field-Oriented Control of Three-Phase Induction Motor Based on Unified Feedforward Method

With the increasing proliferation of variable speed drive, the demand for the more reliable drive is also on the rise. Despite the growing interest on more advanced motors like permanent magnet and flux switching motors, three-phase induction motors (3ph-IMs) are still the main workhorse in the industry and hence the fault-tolerant control of these motor drives remains an interesting and important topic. In this paper, a simple fault-tolerant field-oriented control technique for 3ph-IMs is presented. It is shown that by injecting zero-sequence compensation voltage in a feedforward manner, open-circuit faults can be effectively tolerated. Compared to the previous feedforward fault-tolerant control methods, the proposed approach does not require the knowledge of the magnetizing inductance, which is tricky to be obtained in induction motors. Furthermore, the unified feedforward approach allows the same control structure to be used for different fault-tolerant 3ph-IMs drive topologies, with minor modifications to the feedforward terms. In addition, the effect of inverter non-idealities on the performance of the proposed control method is also highlighted and addressed. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is verified using MATLAB simulation and further validated using experimental tests. This paper is accompanied by a video demonstrating the experimental results.
