This paper reviews the advancements in thermal efficiency of gasoline engines and analyzes the key technological methods to achieve over 50% brake thermal efficiency (BTE). The technological routes proposed for high-efficiency gasoline engine are primarily focused on high compression ratios and lean combustion combined with novel combustion technologies. Supporting technologies mainly include Atkinson/Miller cycles, intake boosting, exhaust gas re-circulation (EGR), water injection, thermal barrier coatings, friction reduction, structural optimization, and combustion diagnostics and control.
