Exploring the putative microRNAs cross-kingdom transfer in Solanum lycopersicum-Meloidogyne incognita interactions.

Plant-pathogen interaction is an inexhaustible source of information on how to sustainably control diseases that negatively affect agricultural production. Meloidogyne incognita is a root-knot nematode (RKN), representing a pest for many crops, including tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). RKNs are a global threat to agriculture, especially under climate change, and RNA technologies offer a potential alternative to chemical nematicides. While endogenous microRNAs have been identified in both S. lycopersicum and M. incognita, and their roles have been related to the regulation of developmental changes, no study has investigated the miRNAs cross-kingdom transfer during this interaction. Here, we propose a bioinformatics pipeline to highlight potential miRNA-dependent cross-kingdom interactions between tomato and M. incognita. The obtained data show that nematode miRNAs putatively targeting tomato genes are mostly related to detrimental effects on plant development and defense. Similarly, tomato miRNAs putatively targeting M. incognita biological processes have negative effects on digestion, mobility, and reproduction. To experimentally test this hypothesis, an in vitro feeding assay was carried out using sly-miRNAs selected from the bioinformatics approach. The results show that two tomato miRNAs (sly-miRNA156a, sly-miR169f) soaked by juvenile larvae (J2s) affected their ability to infect plant roots and form galls. This was also coupled with a significant downregulation of predicted target genes (Minc11367, Minc00111), as revealed by a qRT-PCR analysis. Therefore, the current study expands the knowledge related to the cross-kingdom miRNAs involvement in host-parasite interactions and could pave the way for the application of exogenous plant miRNAs as tools to control nematode infection.

The use of predatory fungi of the genus Arthrobotrys isolated from soil in the farmlands of Southern Kazakhstan to control nematode infections in tomato plants

In Kazakhstan, parasitic nematodes affect up to 35-40% of the harvest of sugar beets, potatoes and tomatoes. Until recently, сhemical nematicides were used to control nematode numbers but posed risks of toxicity to humans and animals, and their effectiveness decreased due to resistant nematodes. There is an urgent need to create alternative non-toxic plant protection products. Arthrobotrys oligospora is one of the most studied hyphomycete fungi that is used to create biological products against nematodes. In a laboratory experiment in a pot culture, the activity of Arthrobotrys predatory fungi against parasitic nematodes of the genus Meloidogyne was assessed when growing tomatoes of the «F1 Russian size» variety in a vermiculite/soil mixture. Physiological indicators of plant growth (stem length, number of leaves, stem and root weight) were used for analysis. To ensure the reliability of the obtained results of the activity of predatory fungi, the number of nematodes and the presence of colonies of native predatory fungi in the soil samples of the used variants post-experiment were taken into account. The length of stems, the number of leaves and the weight of roots and stems during the growing season changed within the experimental error. The most significant result was estimated by the number of live nematodes post-experiment. It was shown that when preparations of predatory fungi were added to the soil, the number of nematodes significantly decreased in all variants. Thus, the nematophagous activity of local predatory fungi of the genus Arthrobotrys in tomato cultivation has been proven.

Exploring the relationship between codon usage and gene expression in the Meloidogyne incognita genome: Implications for environmental adaptability

The present study investigates the phenomenon of codon usage bias (CUB) in Meloidogyne incognita, a parasitic nematode that infests plants. It explores the patterns of CUB, the factors that influence it, and its correlation with gene expression. Understanding codon usage bias in M. incognita is important for developing effective strategies for controlling nematode infections in plants. The results indicated a weak CUB in M. incognita, with an overall AT bias in the genome. The analysis of relative synonymous codon usage (RSCU) revealed that preferred and high-frequency codons mostly ended with G/C, indicating the influence of compositional constraints on codon usage. Further analysis using ENC plot, PR2 plot, Neutrality plot, and correspondence analysis suggested that natural selection and mutation pressure both played a role in observed CUB, with mutation pressure being the decisive factor. Amino acid composition analysis showed that glycine was the most frequently used amino acid, while histidine was the least utilized. Interestingly, the study found a negative correlation between codon usage and gene expression in M. incognita. Overall, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of codon usage bias in M. incognita and highlights its potential implications for gene expression and pathogenesis in plants by understanding preferred, avoided, and unique codons, which could further aid in the development of effective strategies for controlling nematode infections.

Nematicidal Characterization of Newly Synthesized Thiazine Derivatives Using Caenorhabditis elegans as the Model Organism.

In humans, animals, and agriculture, parasitic nematode infection is a very serious issue. Many drugs are being used to control nematode infections. Owing to toxicity and nematodes' resistance to the available drugs, special attention is required to synthesize new drugs that are environmentally friendly with high-level efficacy. In the present study, various substituted thiazine derivatives (1 to 15) were synthesized, and the structures were confirmed by infrared, proton (1H), and 13C NMR spectroscopies. The nematicidal potential of the synthesized derivatives was characterized using Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) as a model organism. Among all synthesized compounds, 13 (LD50 = 38.95 μg/mL) and 15 (LD50 = 38.21 μg/mL) were considered the most potent compounds. Most compounds showed excellent anti-egg-hatching activity. Fluorescence microscopy confirmed that compounds 4, 8, 9, 13, and 15 displayed a high apoptotic effect. The expressions of gst-4, hsp-4, hsp16.2, and gpdh-1 genes were high in affected (treated with thiazine derivatives) C. elegans in comparison with normal C. elegans. The present research revealed that modified compounds are highly effective as they showed the gene level changes in the selected nematode. Due to structural modification in thiazine analogues, the compounds showed various modes of action. The most effective thiazine derivatives could be excellent candidates for novel broad-scale nematicidal drugs.

Egg-laying and locomotory screens with C. elegans yield a nematode-selective small molecule stimulator of neurotransmitter release

Nematode parasites of humans, livestock and crops dramatically impact human health and welfare. Alarmingly, parasitic nematodes of animals have rapidly evolved resistance to anthelmintic drugs, and traditional nematicides that protect crops are facing increasing restrictions because of poor phylogenetic selectivity. Here, we exploit multiple motor outputs of the model nematode C. elegans towards nematicide discovery. This work yielded multiple compounds that selectively kill and/or immobilize diverse nematode parasites. We focus on one compound that induces violent convulsions and paralysis that we call nementin. We find that nementin stimulates neuronal dense core vesicle release, which in turn enhances cholinergic signaling. Consequently, nementin synergistically enhances the potency of widely-used non-selective acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors, but in a nematode-selective manner. Nementin therefore has the potential to reduce the environmental impact of toxic AChE inhibitors that are used to control nematode infections and infestations.

Crude Aqueous Root Extracts of Solanum spp. Show Nematotoxic Activity Against Meloidogyne incognita

Brazilian crops are strongly affected by the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita, which compromises food production and causes serious economic losses around the world. Synthetic nematicides are still some of the main control strategies for this pathogen, despite the high risk to human health and the environment. Therefore, sustainable biotechnology represents a viable alternative for nematode control. Plants of the Solanaceae family are present in several biomes and are a source of secondary metabolites of various chemical classes. In this context, the nematotoxic effect of crude aqueous root extracts (CAREs) of three Solanum species was investigated: Solanum americanum, S. subinerme and S. lycocarpum. CARE showed high nematicidal activity (94.6±9.2% mortality, p ≤ 0.001) against second-stage juveniles (J2) of M. incognita, even after heating to 50 °C. These CAREs also inhibited hatching of juveniles (98.4±0.7% of mortality, p ≤ 0.001) in addition to presenting a mean lethal dose of 336 μg ml-1. No toxic activity was observed against non-target organisms, such as fungi (Trichoderma harzianum and Trichoderma asperellum), yeast (Candida maltosa), nitrogen-fixing bacteria (Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiaens, B. japonicum), two strains of Azospirillum brasilense, AbV 5 and AbV 6 and Bacillus [2538 Ba]. Bioassay performed in a greenhouse demonstrated that CAREs of these species were effective in reducing the number of egg masses and galls (> 85%, p ≤ 0.0001), and did not show a phytotoxic effect on soybean seedlings. Our findings indicate that CAREs from plants of the Solanaceae family, especially S. lycocarpum, demonstrated nematotoxic activity on J2 and inhibited the hatching of Meloidogyne incognita eggs, representing an ecologically appropriate tool to control nematode infection in crops worldwide.

Case report: Control of intestinal nematodes in captive Chlorocebus sabaeus

There are limited data on the efficacy of antiparasitic treatments and husbandry methods to control nematode infections in captive populations of African green monkeys (AGMs), Chlorocebus sabaeus. In faecal egg count (FEC) tests, 10 of the 11 (91%) adult male AGMs captured from the large feral population on the island of St Kitts had evidence of nematode infections, mostly Capillaria (8/11, 73%), Trichuris trichiura (7/11, 64%) and strongylid species (7/11, 64%) specifically (hookworm and Trichostrongylus, 50/50), but also Strongyloides fuelleborni (1/11, 9%). When kept in individual cages with cleaning and feeding regimens to prevent reinfections and treated concurrently with ivermectin (300 µg/kg, given subcutaneously) and albendazole (10 mg/kg, given orally) daily for 3 days, 60% (6/10) of the AGMs were negative at a follow-up FEC at 3 months and by FEC and necropsy at the end of the study 5–8 months later. One monkey appeared to have been reinfected with T. trichiura after being negative by FEC at 3 months post-treatment. Four AGMs were positive for T. trichiura at the 3 month FEC follow-up but were negative at the end of the study after one further treatment regimen. Although initially being cleared of Capillaria following treatment, three AGMs were found to be infected at the end of the study. The ivermectin and albendazole treatment regimen coupled with good husbandry practices to prevent reinfections effectively controlled nematode infections in captive AGMs.

Resistance of strongylid nematodes to anthelmintic drugs and driving factors at Czech goat farms

BackgroundStrongylid nematode infections may negatively affect both animal health and welfare, with deleterious consequences for livestock productivity. Many farmers in recent decades have relied on anthelmintics as the sole strategy of control, but the intensive use of these chemotherapeutics has led to the development of anthelmintic resistance (AR). Knowledge of both the efficacy of anthelmintics and factors promoting AR are essential to effectively control nematode infections, but no information on these topics for goats in the Czech Republic (CR) is available. This survey aimed to determine the occurrence of AR at Czech goat farms and to identify risk factors for the development of AR. A total of 24 herds of dairy goats across the CR were evaluated using in vitro tests for detecting AR, and a questionnaire survey was carried out to evaluate factors associated with AR.ResultsResistance against benzimidazoles was confirmed at 18 (75%) farms, and the level of resistance was high in four (22%) of the affected herds based on the egg hatch test. Ivermectin-resistant nematodes were detected in 13 (54%) herds using the larval development test; Teladorsagia/Trichostrongylus and Haemonchus were the predominant types of resistant larvae. Eight (62%) of the affected herds were evaluated as highly resistant to ivermectin. Eleven (46%) of the herds were resistant to both benzimidazoles and ivermectin. This report is the first on dual AR in the CR. A univariate logistic regression analysis indicated that a high stocking rate and farmer inexperience were significantly associated with ivermectin and benzimidazole resistance, respectively.ConclusionsThe results of our survey suggest that AR is widespread amongst herds of dairy goats in the CR, likely due to inappropriate practices of pasture and health management. AR may be an issue for expanding dairy-goat production in the CR in the near future unless both veterinary practitioners and farmers widely adopt strategies to prevent the development of AR.

Influence of metabolizable protein and minerals supplementation on detrimental effects of endoparasitic nematodes infection in small ruminants.

Endoparasitic nematode infection could have negative impacts on performances of sheep and goats. However, supplementary protein and minerals can also affect nematodes. This paper reviews present information on the importance of protein and minerals supplementation as means to control nematode infection in small ruminants. Protein supplementation seems to improve host resilience by diverting metabolizable protein (MP) towards dealing with detrimental effects of the infection and thus improve production and reproductive performances of animal. A large body of evidence shows that supplementation of copper, iron, and zinc can also enhance host resistance against nematode infection as shown by decreasedfecal egg count (FEC) and worm burdens. As such, protein and mineral supplementations can play a major role in sustainable control of parasitic nematode infection and thus reduce reliance on chemotherapic drugs.

Kinetics of IgA and eosinophils following a low-dose, predominantly Haemonchus contortus infection of Boer goats.

Most breeds of goat are more susceptible to nematode infection than sheep, and this appears to be a consequence of less effective immune responses. Several papers have considered the effectiveness of eosinophils and immunoglobulin A (IgA) in goats but differences in the induction of responses have not been studied in the same detail. The aim of this study was to look at the induction of eosinophil and IgA responses in Boer goats reared indoors under intensive conditions. The goats were experimentally infected with a low dose of 2400 Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus spp. and Oesophagostomum spp. at a 6:1:1 ratio. Faecal egg counts (FEC), packed cell volume (PCV), IgA activity against third-stage larvae and peripheral eosinophilia were measured twice a week for eight weeks. The infection generated an IgA response but did not significantly increase peripheral eosinophilia in the 25 infected kids compared with the 4 control animals. FEC was not associated with IgA activity or eosinophilia. A detailed analysis of IgA and eosinophil responses to deliberate nematode infection in Boer goats showed that there was an increase in nematode-specific IgA activity but no detectable eosinophil response. In addition, there was no association between increased IgA activity or eosinophilia with egg counts and worm burdens. These suggest that IgA and eosinophils do not act to control nematode infection in goats.

Questionnaire survey on helminth control practices in horse farms in Ireland.

Knowledge regarding helminth control strategies and nematode infection of horses in Ireland is limited and only one study has been published recently. This present study was designed to investigate the current helminth control strategies followed by horse owners in Ireland. A questionnaire was formulated to collect data on general grazing, pasture management and deworming strategies including the use of fecal egg counts. Questionnaires were emailed to 700 members of the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders Association and Horse Sport Ireland. Only 78 questionnaires were returned. Respondents indicated that horses are grazed for 16-24 h day-1 during the summer and autumn (89% and 65%, respectively). Removing feces from the pasture was implemented by 37.6% of respondents. Few (22.2%) owners kept horses off pasture after worming. Overall, ivermectin and moxidectin were the most commonly administered anthelmintics in 2014 by 75% and 62% of respondents, respectively. Benzimidazole and pyrantel drugs were used by 53% and 35% of respondents, respectively. The majority of farms (81.4%) treated horses 4-5 times per year and 74.2% only estimated the weight of the horses visually. The findings of this study illustrates that many stud managers/owners do not follow best practice with regard to helminth control and more education is needed.

A high-throughput screen for the identification of compounds that inhibit nematode gene expression by targeting spliced leader trans-splicing

Infections with parasitic nematodes are among the most significant of the neglected tropical diseases affecting about a billion people living mainly in tropical regions with low economic activity.The most effective current strategy to control nematode infections involves large scale treatment programs with anthelmintic drugs. This strategy is at risk from the emergence of drug resistant parasites. Parasitic nematodes also affect livestock, which are treated with the same limited group of anthelmintic drugs. Livestock parasites resistant to single drugs, and even multi-drug resistant parasites, are appearing in many areas. There is therefore a pressing need for new anthelmintic drugs.Here we use the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as a model for parasitic nematodes and demonstrate that sinefungin, a competitive inhibitor of methyltransferases, causes a delay in development and reduced fecundity, and inhibits spliced leader trans-splicing. Spliced leader trans-splicing is an essential step in gene expression that does not occur in the hosts of parasitic nematodes, and is therefore a potential target for new anthelmintic drugs.We have exploited the ability of sinefungin to inhibit spliced leader trans-splicing to adapt a green fluorescent protein based reporter gene assay that monitors spliced leader trans-splicing for high-throughput screening for new anthelmintic compounds. We have established a protocol for robust high-throughput screening, combining mechanical dispensing of living C. elegans into 384- or 1536- well plates with addition of compounds using an acoustic liquid dispenser, and the detection of the inhibition of SL trans-splicing using a microplate reader. We have tested this protocol in a first pilot screen and envisage that this assay will be a valuable tool in the search for new anthelmintic drugs.

Risk factors associated with occurrence of anthelmintic resistance in sheep of resource-poor farmers in Limpopo province, South Africa.

Anthelmintic treatment is the most common way of controlling nematode infections in ruminants even though several countries have reported anthelmintic resistance (AR), resulting in limitation for sustainable small ruminant production. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the knowledge of resource-poor sheep farmers in Limpopo province of South Africa on the use of anthelmintics. A questionnaire regarding helminthosis control practices was administered to small ruminant farmers in five districts of Limpopo province namely Capricorn, Sekhukhune, Waterberg, Vhembe, and Mopani. A total of 77 resource-poor farmers were interviewed between June and August of 2017 using a structured questionnaire with a combination of qualitative and quantitative open-ended questions. The interviewed farmers were divided into three groups based on their farming experience (< 5; 6-10, and ˃10years of farming experience). Limited farming experience was shown as one of the risks, as farmers that owned sheep for less than 10years could not identify the symptoms of gastrointestinal parasites infection and did not know how nematodes are transmitted to animals. However, no significant difference (p < 0.05) was found to exist between the three groups of farmers in terms of clinical signs identification and correct application of anthelmintics. About 43% of the respondents were unaware of gastrointestinal nematodes (GI) that infect sheep, could not identify the clinical symptoms of gastrointestinal nematodes infection, and only 34% knew how animals become infected. Although 67.5% of farmers mentioned that they never dose their sheep, 32.5% use anthelmintics at varying times in a year. None of the farmers weighed their sheep before dosing them instead visual appraisal of individual weight was the most common means of estimating the anthelmintic dose. The above information is an indication of risks associated with possible occurrence of anthelmintic resistance in the study areas. There is therefore, a need to give training to resource-poor farmers of small stock on proper application of anthelmintic treatment and to educate them on how to prevent development of AR. Future studies on AR should also be conducted in the province in flocks with high-treatment frequencies to establish the occurrence of AR using both in vivo and in vitro methods. The most common risk factor associated with the occurrence of AR in all the five districts of Limpopo province was found to be the use of anthelmintics without weighing the animals to determine the correct dosage.

Anthelmintic Drugs: Their Efficacy and Cost-Effectiveness in Different Parity Cattle.

Gastrointestinal nematodes are responsible for economic losses in bovines and are characterized by reduced milk production, decreased working efficiency, and even death. In our study, the effect of different anthelmintic treatments on nematode control in different parity cattle (Friesian crossbreds) at calving and their effect on milk yield were evaluated. The economics of anthelmintics and farm benefits in terms of increased milk production after deworming was also calculated. We screened cattle of first and second parity for nematodes. Animals were randomly selected in each group. In first parity animals, there were 23 positive cattle found, which were divided into 3 different groups, while in second parity animals there were 20 positive cattle which were also divided into 3 groups. For treatment of gastrointestinal nematodes, we used albendazole (velbazine) at 10 mg/kg body weight and levamisole (Nilverm®) at 7.5 mg/kg. In this study, both drugs were found effective in controlling nematode infections in cattle. Percentage reduction of eggs per gram (EPG) by albendazole was 48.20, 85.34, and 93.90% and 51.54, 81.43, 91.74% on day 7, 14, and 21 in first and second parity animals, respectively. Percentage reduction of EPG by levamisole was 44.45, 76.92, and 88.03% and 46.60, 73.78, 85.43% on day 7, 14, and 21 in first and second parity animals, respectively. The average increase in milk production in albendazole-treated groups was 0.39 and 0.92 L per day while increases in levamisole treated groups were 0.27 and 0.55 L per day in first and second parity cattle, respectively. After treatment, albendazole increased the milk fat by 0.07 and 0.1% while levamisole decreased by 0.02 and 0.05% in first and second parity cattle, respectively. It is concluded that anthelmintic treatments of recently calved cattle have a significant effect on milk production due to the nematode control. Milk production increased significantly in second parity cattle following anthelmintic treatment as compared to first parity animals. Levamisole had a negative effect on fat concentration in cattle while albendazole-treated cattle showed a positive effect. Albendazole has been found more efficient in reducing EPG of helminths in both parity animals as compared to levamisole-treated animals while the cost-benefit ratio of levamisole was greater than albendazole.

Association between Dictyocaulus viviparus status and milk production parameters in Dutch dairy herds

The objective of this study was to estimate the association between Dictyocaulus viviparus bulk tank milk (BTM) test results and milk production and milk composition parameters in adult Dutch dairy cattle herds. Bulk tank milk samples were collected in August and November 2013, and ELISA tests were performed. Two hundred BTM positive (BTM+) and 200 BTM negative (BTM–) herds were selected based on their BTM test result of November 2013, obtained from a list of farms that participated in the Dutch GD Animal Health voluntary monitoring program for controlling nematode infections. The relationship between D. viviparus BTM status and 3 production parameters (milk production, milk fat %, and milk protein %) in summer (June to August 2013) and autumn (September and October 2013) was investigated using generalized linear mixed models. Production data were available for 126 BTM– herds and 109 BTM+ herds. Results showed that a positive D. viviparus status was associated with decreased milk production (June: –1.01, July: –1.19, August: –1.68, September and October: –1.33kg/cow per d). Milk fat percentage was 0.14% and 0.08% lower during summer and autumn, respectively, in BTM+ herds. No significant association was demonstrated between a positive BTM test result and milk protein percentage. Because a strong correlation was present between the BTM status for D. viviparus and that for Ostertagia ostertagi, these losses cannot be attributed to one of the two parasites. However, it is clear that these parasite infections have a considerable effect on production.

Effect of spraying Arthrobotrys conoides conidia on pastures to control nematode infection in sheep

The effect of spraying pastures with conidia of the fungus Arthrobotrys conoides (GenBank ID: JN191309) for the biological control of gastrointestinal nematode infection-pressure in lambs was assessed. A 12,000-m2 area was divided into six 2,000-m2 fenced areas. Two groups were formed: the treatment group comprised three fenced areas, where conidia were sprayed on the pasture weekly at 7.5 x 104 conidia m-2; and the control group, also comprising three fenced areas, where conidia were not sprayed. The pastures included lopsided oat ( Avena strigosa Schreb) and Italian ryegrass ( Lolium multiflorum Lam.). Five naturally infected lambs, were placed between July and September in each fenced area. The effectiveness of biological control was assessed between May and September 2009 by counting the number of third-stage larvae (L3) in each pasture. Additionally, the egg output of the sentinel animals was monitored by counting the number of gastrointestinal nematode eggs per gram of faeces (EPG) and the average weight gain was measured. The negative impact on soil was assessed by counting the number of free-living nematodes and phytonematodes. The number of gastrointestinal nematode larvae in the treated pastures decreased. This was significant at two examination days (end August and end of September). At the end of the study, conidia treatment reduced gastrointestinal nematodes on pasture by 52.4% compared to the control group; this difference was statistically significant. Regarding the whole examination period the average reductions in EPG in treatment group was 49.1% compared to the control group. The most common genera of gastrointestinal nematodes were Haemonchus and Trichostrongylus . Animal weight gain and soil nematode counts did not differ significantly.

The transfer of IgA from mucus to plasma and the implications for diagnosis and control of nematode infections

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) activity has been associated with reduced growth and fecundity of Teladorsagia circumcincta. IgA is active at the site of infection in the abomasal mucus. However, while IgA activity in abomasal mucus is not easily measured in live animals without invasive methods, IgA activity can be readily detected in the plasma, making it a potentially valuable tool in diagnosis and control. We used a Bayesian statistical analysis to quantify the relationship between mucosal and plasma IgA in sheep deliberately infected with T. circumcincta. The transfer of IgA depends on mucosal IgA activity as well as its interaction with worm number and size; together these account for over 80% of the variation in plasma IgA activity. By quantifying the impact of mucosal IgA and worm number and size on plasma IgA, we provide a tool that can allow more meaningful interpretation of plasma IgA measurements and aid the development of efficient control programmes.

Gastrointestinal nematode burden in working equids from humid tropical areas of central Veracruz, Mexico, and its relationship with body condition and haematological values

The east coast of Veracruz, Mexico, has an important equine population used for working in rural production systems. The objectives of this study were (1) to calculate the prevalence of tropical working equids (donkeys, mules and horses) infected with gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) and the GINs involved, and (2) to measure the body condition score (BCS) and haematological values for each working equid and its relationship with faecal worm egg count (EPG). One hundred and forty working equids were randomly selected from five different villages along the central coast of the state of Veracruz and faecal and blood samples were obtained from each animal. Gastrointestinal parasite burdens were determined using the McMaster technique. Packed cell volume, total plasma proteins, red blood cell count and white blood cell count were measured from each blood sample. Prevalence of infected equids was higher than 90 %. Mules had the highest median faecal worm egg counts (875 EPG), followed by horses and donkeys with 400 EPG. There was no correlation between EPG and BCS or haematological values (p > 0.05). Results suggest that despite the high prevalence and parasite burdens, equids involved in this trial are not being seriously affected. This study provides information which might help in designing future strategies to control nematode infections in working equids in the Mexican tropics; more emphasis should be placed on other inputs (nutrition perhaps), with individual anthelminthic treatment to those animals with the highest EPG or when signs present themselves.
