Puccinia pittieriana . [Descriptions of Fungi and Bacteria

Abstract A description is provided for Puccinia pittieriana . Information is included on the disease caused by the organism, its transmission, geographical distribution, and hosts. HOSTS: On Lycopersicon esculentum (tomato), Solanum tuberosum (potato) and S. demissum ; also on various wild species of Solanum . DISEASE: Potato and tomato rust. GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION: America (Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Venezuela) (CMI Map 113). TRANSMISSION: By wind-blown basidiospores; germination and infection studies have been undertaken (48, 905). Presumably a prolonged if not continuous potato cropping period, combined with susceptible native plants, ensures a carry-over of inoculum from one crop to another (47, 3189).

Chlorinated Insecticides in Runoff Water as Affected by Crop Rotation

AbstractThe concentration and amounts of three chlorinated insecticides were lower in runoff from a rotation system of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), oats (Avena sativa L.), and sod, than under continuous potato cropping. Runoff samples from natural runoff plots were collected following each storm, and the amounts of DDT, endrin, and endosulfan were analyzed with a gas chromatograph.The amounts of pesticides in runoff were small compared to the amount applied. The concentrations of the insecticides in the runoff (soil‐water suspension) were generally greater than those found in the settled soil (sludge).

Hexosamines in Soil Aggregates

RECENT experiments at this Station on water-stable soil aggregates in a Bridgehampton silt loam have indicated that quantity of soil organic matter is not a reliable index of efficiency in the formation and stabilization of aggregates1,2. These investigations involved soils in frames that had been in redtop–potato and red clover–potato rotations for a long period of time—redtop I (1933), redtop II (1950), red clover (1950), continuous potatoes (1933). Crop yields were closely related to aggregation, and fresh additions of organic residues in the rotation systems enhanced aggregate formation.

The response of Irish potatoes to different amounts and ratios of nitrogen, phosphoric acid and potash when grown in continuous culture

In these experiments various amounts of either a 6-12-12 or an 8-12-12 fertilizer were compared as well as a standard amount of different grades having various ratios of N, P and K. Green Mountain and Katahdin varieties were used, yields were determined and data on specific gravity and keeping qualities obtained. The experimental area had been used for growing potatoes for a number of years previous to the beginning of the experiment and was in a high state of fertility. Little response to increasing the application of P2O5 or K2O above the minimum used was obtained. There was a consistent increase in yield resulting from increased nitrogen applications up to about 120–130 pounds per acre. Only relatively small differences in specific gravity of the tubers or in keeping quality was noted as resulting from the different fertilizer treatments. No significant increase in yield resulted from using more than 2000 pounds per acre of a 6-12-12 grade or 1750 pounds of an 8-12-12 per acre. Continuous potato culture with heavy applications of fertilizer results in accumulations of P2O5 and K2O in the soil. The fertilizer grade and amount needs to be adjusted accordingly in order to obtain the most economical return. It is concluded that under these conditions the ratio of N, P and K in the fertilizer should be gradually changed from the customary 1-2-2 to one approaching a 1-1-1 ratio for continuous potato culture. An application of 1500 to 2000 pounds per acre of an 8-12-12, 10-10-10 or similar fertilizer will probably supply all the nutrients needed by the potato crop.
