Fabrication and characterization of Ti–12Mo/xAl2O3 bio-inert composite for dental prosthetic applications

Introduction: Titanium (Ti)-molybdenum(Mo) composites reinforced with ceramic nanoparticles have recently significant interest among researchers as a new type of bio-inert material used for dental prosthetic applications due to its biocompatibility, outstanding physical, mechanical and corrosion properties. The current work investigates the impact of alumina (Al2O3) nanoparticles on the properties of the Ti–12Mo composite, including microstructure, density, hardness, wear resistance, and electrochemical behavior.Methods: Ti–12Mo/xAl2O3 nanocomposites reinforced with different Al2O3 nanoparticles content were prepared. The composition of each sample was adjusted through the mechanical milling of the elemental constituents of the sample for 24 h under an argon atmosphere. The produced nanocomposite powders were then cold-pressed at 600 MPa and sintered at different temperatures (1,350°C, 1,450°C, and 1,500°C) for 90 min. Based on density measurements using the Archimedes method, the most suitable sintering temperature was found to be 1,450°C. The morphology and chemical composition of the milled and sintered composites were analyzed using back-scattering scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).Results and Discussion: The results showed that the addition of Mo increased the Ti density from 99.11% to 99.46%, while the incorporation of 15wt% Al2O3 in the Ti–12Mo composite decreased the density to 97.28%. Furthermore, the Vickers hardness and wear behavior of the Ti–Mo composite were enhanced with the addition of up to 5 wt% Al2O3. The sample contains 5 wt% Al2O3 exhibited a Vickers hardness of 593.4 HV, compared to 320 HV for pure Ti, and demonstrated the lowest wear rate of 0.0367 mg/min, compared to 0.307 mg/min for pure Ti. Electrochemical investigations revealed that the sintered Ti–12Mo/xAl2O3 nanocomposites displayed higher corrosion resistance against a simulated artificial saliva (AS) solution than pure Ti. The concentrations of Ti, Mo, and Al ions released from the Ti–12Mo/xAl2O3 nanocomposites in the AS solution were within the safe levels. It was found from this study that; the sample of the composition Ti–12Mo/5wt%Al2O3 exhibited appropriate mechanical properties, biocompatibility, corrosion resistance against the AS solution with acceptable ion concentration released in the biological fluids. Therefore, it can be considered as a new bio-inert material for potential applications in dental prosthetics.

Effects of refined grains and doped nanoparticles on fabricating Al2O3 ceramics using binder jetting

Adding sintering additives to fabricate alumina ceramics via the binder jetting (BJ) technique effectively enhances material properties. However, it is still limited by the disadvantages of low relative density and poor mechanical properties. This study proposed reducing matrix particle size and adding nanoscale particles using binder jetting to address the poor densification and strength of printed alumina (Al2O3) samples. Additionally, their effects on the mechanical properties and manufacturability of the material were explored. Numerical simulations were carried out before the experiments to predict the impact of particle stacking on the powder bed using the discrete element method (DEM). Then, filler particles with an average 40 μm size replaced the original 106 μm-sized Al2O3 particles. Subsequently, Al2O3 nanoparticle content in the samples was gradually increased, and the relevant properties of the sintered samples with different compositions were tested. Consequently, the size of the Al2O3 particles and the addition of Al2O3 nanoparticles significantly affects the physical and mechanical properties of the samples. The sample with 106 μm-sized particles has a compressive strength of 58 MPa, while reducing the particle size to 40 μm increases its compressive strength by 26 %. Moreover, the sample's compressive strength could reach up to 330 MPa, an increase of 513 %, and the hardness reaches 1215 HV (11.91 GPa) by expanding the Al2O3 nanoparticles content to 30 %. Additionally, using Al2O3 nanoparticles further reduces the sintering temperature, significantly improving the practicality of Al2O3 printing using binder jetting.

Role of hybrid nanofiller GNPs/Al2O3 on enhancing the mechanical and tribological performance of HDPE composite

The unique mechanical properties and wear resistance of HDPE give it the potential as an alternative to frictional material. The current research focuses on using hybrid nanoparticles with various loading fillers to determine the best additive contents. The mechanical and tribological characteristics were examined and evaluated. The HDPE nanocomposite samples containing 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 wt.% filling content of Al2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) and 0.5, and 1.0 wt.% of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were fabricated. The results showed a good enhancement in the mechanical and tribological properties of HDPE composites with the presence of nano additives. The HDPE nanocomposites recorded the best performance with a loading amount of 2.0 wt.% with an equal ratio of hybrid nanofiller Al2O3 NPs and GNPs.

Effects of Al2O3 nanoparticles on the properties of glass matrix composites for sealant applications

Glass matrix composites (GMCs) have better mechanical properties than glass, which is beneficial for applications as sealants. This application scenario requires the GMCs sealants to withstand extreme service conditions for extended periods of time. In this study, a borosilicate glass as the matrix was filled with Al2O3 nanoparticles to prepare the GMCs through powder technology, and the effects of Al2O3 nanoparticles on the phase composition, thermal behavior, coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE), microstructure, wettability, viscosity and mechanical properties were systematically investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and thermal analysis results revealed that the Al2O3 particles, which were thermodynamically stable in the borosilicate glass after heat treatment, could be considered as rigid inclusions. As the mass fraction of Al2O3 nanoparticles increased, the CTEs of the GMCs and the wettability to metal surfaces gradually decreased, and an increasing viscosity was also observed with the addition of Al2O3 nanoparticles, which was attributed to the inhibition effect of the Al2O3 nanoparticles on glass viscous flow and apparently contributed to the residual voids. The mechanical properties of the heat-treated GMCs were enhanced by the Al2O3 nanoparticles but limited by structural defects such as residual voids and swollen bubbles, especially when the mass fraction of Al2O3 nanoparticles was large. The results thus demonstrate that an increased heat treatment temperature was expected to reduce the viscosity of the melts and promote the elimination of residual voids, but will inevitably cause the undesired bubble growth at the same time. Therefore, the content of Al2O3 nanoparticles in the glass matrix should be limited to a certain extent to ensure that the reinforcements can fully exert their strengthening effect.

Utilization of Improved Machine Learning Method Based on Artificial Hummingbird Algorithm to Predict the Tribological Behavior of Cu-Al2O3 Nanocomposites Synthesized by In Situ Method

This paper presents a machine learning model to predict the effect of Al2O3 nanoparticles content on the wear rates in Cu-Al2O3 nanocomposite prepared using in situ chemical technique. The model developed is a modification of the random vector functional link (RVFL) algorithm using artificial hummingbird algorithm (AHA). The objective of using AHA is used to find the optimal configuration of RVFL to enhance the prediction of Al2O3 nanoparticles. The preparation of the composite was done using aluminum nitrate that was added to a solution containing scattered copper nitrate. After that, the powders of CuO and Al2O3 were obtained, and the leftover liquid was removed using a thermal treatment at 850 °C for 1 h. The powders were consolidated using compaction and sintering processes. The microhardness of the nanocomposite with 12.5% Al2O3 content is 2.03-fold times larger than the pure copper, while the wear rate of the same composite is reduced, reaching 55% lower than pure copper. These improved properties are attributed to the presence of Al2O3 nanoparticles and their homogenized distributions inside the matrix. The developed RVFl-AHA model was able to predict the wear rates of all the prepared composites at different wear load and speed, with very good accuracy, reaching nearly 100% and 99.5% using training and testing, respectively, in terms of coefficient of determination R2.

Preparation and properties of ODPA-ODA-SDA polyimide film and its application in corona resistance

High-frequency trend of electrical equipment puts forward higher requirements on the dielectric properties of insulating materials, especially under corona ageing environment. Therefore, a facile and effective method for improved corona resistance is essential for the development of high-frequency power systems. In this article, 4,4′-Oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA) was chosen as the dianhydride while 4,4′-Diaminodiphenyl ether (ODA) and 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl sulphide (SDA) as diamines. Consequently, thermally imidized ODPA-ODA-SDA copolyimides were synthesized, and the influence of ODPA and SDA on the dielectric properties was discussed. High-frequency corona ageing test was also conducted to investigate the relationship between dielectric properties and the corona resistance. From dielectric frequency spectra analysis, the ODPA-ODA-SDA copolyimide was considered to exhibit the best dielectric properties when SDA accounted for 30% mole fraction of diamine, the dielectric loss of which was 24.03% lower than that of ODPA-ODA at 20 kHz. Meanwhile, the better corona resistance property and mechanical properties were obtained, especially the corona ageing lifetime was 2.26 times higher than that of ODPA-ODA. To further improve the corona resistance property, a series of modified-PI/Al2O3 nanocomposite films based on ODPA-ODA-SDA matrix were prepared by in-situ polymerization. When the content of Al2O3 nanoparticles reached 12 wt%, the thermal stability was improved and the corona ageing lifetime was 6.14 times longer than that of ODPA-ODA. This experiment provides new ideas and directions for reducing mechanical and thermal performance losses as well as achieving high-efficiency corona resistance, which is expected to promote the development of advanced insulating films.

Microstructures and properties of Cu-10Sn oil bearings reinforced by Al2O3 nanoparticles

Using Sn and Cu-Al powders as raw materials, three oxide dispersion-strengthened (ODS) Cu-10Sn alloy powders with different Al2O3 mass content (0.42%, 0.85% and 1.68%, respectively) were prepared by mechanochemical synthesis combined with diffusion alloying method. The oil bearings were then fabricated by pressing and sintering. The effects of Al2O3 on microstructures and properties of the powders and the oil bearings were investigated. The results show that Al2O3 nanoparticles with sizes of about 5 nm are uniformly distributed in the ODS Cu powders. The content of Al2O3 nanoparticles has no effect on the distribution uniformity of tin during the diffusion process. And three ODS Cu-10Sn alloy powders with homogeneous tin distribution are prepared. However, the temperatures of forming liquid phases in the ODS Cu-10Sn alloys decrease with increasing Al2O3 content. This affects the sintering behaviors and mechanical properties of oil bearings. Increasing Al2O3 content also has a significant promoting effect on the precipitation of Sn-rich particles. In order to synergize the solid solution strengthening of tin and the dispersion strengthening of Al2O3 nanoparticles, the content of Al2O3 in the ODS Cu-10Sn alloys will not exceed 0.85%. The ODS Cu-10Sn oil bearings with 0.42% Al2O3 sintered at 900 °C have the best comprehensive properties, with uniform radial and axial shrinkage, oil content of 19.1%, radial crushing strength of 284 MPa and micro-hardness of 142 HV.

Electroless-plating of Ag nanoparticles on Al2O3 for enhanced mechanical and wear properties of Cu–Al2O3 nanocomposites

Wettability between Cu and Al2O3 nanoparticles is relatively low, which limit the applicability of this nanocomposite. To this end, electro-less deposition of Ag over Al2O3 nanoparticles were applied to improve their wettability with Cu matrix. Al2O3 coated Ag were mixed with commercially pure Cu powder in varying weight percentages (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8) and then nanocomposites were synthesized through powder metallurgy route. To obtain uniform distribution of nanoparticles in Cu matrix, mixing was carried out via mechanical alloying. Microstructure, mechanical and wear behaviors were investigated to see the effect of Al2O3 nanoparticles content in Cu. The result showed that Al2O3 nanoparticles are homogenously dispersed in the Cu matrix. The hardness and compressive strength were improved by the addition of nanoparticles up to 8wt%. Around 30% improvement was found in the strength of the nanocomposite. Furthermore, the average hardness of the composite coatings varies from 65.2 to 150 HV as Al2O3 content increases from 0 to 8wt%. Abrasive wear analysis showed that the abrasive wear resistance of the nanocomposites improves with the increment of nanoparticle content. The microstructure refines due to Al2O3 addendums illustrated a considerable function in the wear behavior of the Cu matrix.

Mechanical and microstructural characterization of rice husk ash and Al2O3 nanoparticles modified cement concrete

Waste and by-product materials both in their macro and micro-sizes are nowadays gaining more importance and consideration for their use as a partial substitute of the virgin concrete s constituents. Nanoparticles have now also gained widespread recognition and used in various construction applications, especially cement-based materials. The present paper examines the impacts of a combination of Al2O3 nanoparticles along with Rice Husk Ash (RHA) on both mechanical properties (Flexure, Splitting tensile and Compressive) strengths and durability properties, including resistance to hydrochloric acid attack and chloride permeation. RHA substituted Portland cement (PC) at a fixed amount of 10%, and Al2O3 nanoparticles have been utilized as a partial substitution of PC at 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4%. Surface morphology and microstructure of modified cement concretes were assessed by means of the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results revealed that Al2O3 nanoparticles have double effects as a filling material. As a reactive one, increasing contribution in the volume of calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H) formed thereby increases the strengths and durability properties of concrete material. It has also been found that 3% content of Al2O3 nanoparticles is the optimum content to substitute part of the cement leading to the greatest mechanical and durability properties enhancement. The combination of up to 3% Al2O3 nanoparticles along with 10%RHA to design modified cement concretes with enhanced strength and durability performances have revealed to be efficient and productive for eco-friendly concrete material.

Effect of Al2O3 addition on hardness and wear behavior of Cu–Al2O3 electro-less coated Ag nanocomposite

The present paper represents the experimental examination on the additions of Al2O3 coated Ag percent on the properties of Cu–Al2O3 coated Ag nanocomposites. With the object of enhancement dispersion of high weight fraction of Al2O3 nanoparticles and wettability in Cu matrix, nano Al2O3 particles were electroless coated via Ag particles. Four different Al2O3 content, 3, 6, 9 and 12wt.% are considered to highlight its effect on the characteristics of the fabricated nanocomposite. High-energy ball milling is applied for mixing powders and compaction and sintering are applying for consolidation. Microstructural explanations displayed a homogenous distribution of Al2O3. The relative density decreases with increasing the content of Al2O3 nanoparticles. In addition, microhardness is increased gradually via the addition of nano Al2O3 coated Ag. Sliding wear rate decrease via increasing the Al2O3 coated Ag nanocomposite content and increase with increasing the applied load. Also, the coefficient of friction decreases via increasing the nano Al2O3 coated Ag nanocomposite content and increasing applied load.

Effect of nano Al2O3 coated Ag addition on the corrosion resistance and electrochemical behavior of Cu-Al2O3 nanocomposites

Cu-Al2O3 coated Ag nanocomposite is prepared by electroless chemical deposition, followed by PM technique. Nano Al2O3 by 3, 6, 9, and 12 wt.% is firstly coated with 5 wt.% nano Ag then the above four mentioned percent are mechanically milled with nano copper for 1 h by 350 rpm. Followed by compacted under 700 MPa, then sintered at 950 °C in H2 gas inert. The microstructure and mapping were estimated to evaluate the homogeneity of constituent. The amount of relative density decreases with increasing the content of Al2O3 nanoparticles. In addition, electrical resistivity is increase gradually by the addition of Al2O3 coated Ag and thermal conductivity decrease by increasing the Al2O3 coated Ag nanocomposite content. The electrochemical behavior and corrosion resistance of the prepared samples are studied. The resultant indicates that 9 wt.% Al2O3 sample has the lowest corrosion rate. In addition, it is the most suitable for electrochemical deposition.

High mechanical performance alumina-reinforced aluminum nanocomposite metal foam produced by powder metallurgy: fabrication, microstructure characterization, and mechanical properties

In this research, alumina-reinforced aluminum nanocomposite foams with high compressive performance were produced using the powder compact melting (PCM) process and CaCO3 foaming agent. The content of Al2O3 nanoparticles, with sizes smaller than 80 nm, varied between 0–15 wt%. Aluminum, Al2O3, and CaCO3 powders were mixed and compacted to dense precursors with 318 MPa stress. Finally, foam samples were fabricated by heating up the precursors at 1000 °C for 10 min. A range of porosity values was achieved between 34% to 43% for different combinations of aluminum matrix and alumina reinforcement phase. The crystallite size of the alumina reinforcement phase in Al-3 wt% alumina and Al-15 wt% alumina composite foam was estimated as 23.51 nm and 23.24 nm while the crystallite size of the aluminum matrix was determined as 15.72 nm and 15.44 nm for the same samples. The Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) images indicated micro-size pores, which were connected via channels. The composite foam with 3 wt% of Al2O3 nanoparticles had a more uniform microstructure and more channels than other samples. The Vickers hardness values of the composites foam increased with an increase in wt% of alumina particles. This amounts to an approximately 93% increase in hardness when 15 wt% alumina particles are added to the aluminum foam. The sample with 3 wt% Al2O3 nanoparticles showed enhanced compressive strain up to 50% with high compressive strength up to 45 MPa and a uniform microstructure.

Effect of Al2O3 nanoparticles content and compaction temperature on properties of Al–Al2O3 coated Cu nanocomposites

This paper presents experimental investigation on the effect of Al2O3 content and compaction temperature on mechanical and wear properties of Al–Al2O3 coated Cu nanocomposites. With the aim of improving wettability and dispersion of high weight fraction of Al2O3 nanoparticles in Al matrix, Al2O3 nanoparticles were electroless coated by Cu particles. High-energy ball milling followed by hot compaction was applied to manufacture Al–Al2O3 coated Cu nanocomposites. The results showed that increasing Al2O3 nanoparticles content up to 10 wt% improved hardness and wear properties of samples compacted at 400 ᵒC, while by increasing Al2O3 content to 15 wt%, the properties were negatively affected due to the agglomeration of Al2O3 nanoparticles and the high reduction of relative density. However, well dispersion of high content of Al2O3, 15 wt%, was achieved in samples compacted at 700 MPa which improved hardness by 105% compared to pure Al. The hot compaction temperature highly influenced structural, mechanical and wear properties of compacted samples. Increasing compaction temperature, reduced crystallite size (49 nm) and increased the relative density of Al–Al2O3 coated Cu nanocomposites which improved mechanical and wear properties of the produced samples. Applying electroless deposition of Cu over Al2O3 nanoparticles followed by high-energy ball milling and hot compaction at 700 MPa is an efficient procedure for production of Al–Al2O3 coated Cu nanocomposite with relatively high Al2O3 content.

Mg improves the distribution of Al2O3 nanoparticles in an Al matrix via solidification

We report the effect of Mg addition on the distribution of a low content of Al2O3 nanoparticles in the Al matrix as well as the mechanical properties of the prepared nanocomposites. The results show that the average grain size was slightly smaller in nanocomposites with Mg than those without. The addition of Mg leads to complete dispersion and uniform distribution of Al2O3 nanoparticles in the Al matrix. The uniform distribution of Al2O3 nanoparticles is contrary to the view that most Al2O3 nanoparticles are pushed to the grain boundary with the low volume fraction of nanoparticles added into the metal melt. MgAl2O4 formed at the interfaces improved the interfacial wetting and bonding between nanoparticles and the Al matrix. The addition of magnesium leads to a significant increase in the elongation of nanocomposites. Orowan strengthening increased the yield strength and tensile strength of nanocomposites with Mg versus those without Mg. The tensile strength and yield strength of nanocomposites with Mg were 265 MPa and 206 MPa, respectively—an increase of approximately 29% and 51% versus Mg-free nanocomposites.

Reactive air brazing of YSZ ceramic with novel Al2O3 nanoparticles reinforced Ag-CuO-Al2O3 composite filler: Microstructure and joint properties

The YSZ ceramic coated with a copper layer (~5μm) was successfully reactive air brazed using novel Al2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) reinforced Ag-CuO-Al2O3 composite filler. The effects of Al2O3 NPs content on the interfacial microstructure and joint properties were investigated. When the content of Al2O3 NPs was 8wt.%, YSZ joints obtained fine interfacial microstructure and optimal mechanical properties. The coefficient of thermal expansion of composite filler was calculated to be 16.26×10−6K−1, presenting a decline of 12.1% compared to that of Ag-CuO base filler. The hardness and modulus values of braze joint slightly increased to 2.6GPa and 164GPa, respectively, possessing a better ability to resist deformation. Consequently, the YSZ joint possessed a maximum shear strength of 60MPa, which was 25MPa (~71%) higher than that of the joints brazed using Ag-CuO base filler. The leakage rate of YSZ-tube/AgCuO-8Al2O3/YSZ-block samples was measured to be 3.2±0.9×10−10Pam3s−1, which met the leakage rate requirements for vacuum tight components (less than 10−9Pam3s−1). It implied that this novel method was an effective way to obtain hermetic YSZ joints.

Rheological Evaluation of Asphalt Cements Modified with ASA Polymer and Al2O3 Nanoparticles

This study aims to evaluate and characterize the properties of modified asphalt cements exposed to high temperature. The Acrylate Styrene Acrylonhrtilrei (ASA) polymer and nano aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles were added to the base asphalt cement with concentrations of 3, 5 and 7% of the weight of asphalt. The storage stability, viscosity, frequency sweep and MSRC test were considered for evaluation. The results demonstrate that the addition of ASA polymer and Al2O3 nanoparticles content have a great influence on the rheological properties of the asphalt cement at high temperatures. Additionally, it is clear that the storage stability of modified asphalt cements with ASA polymer and Al2O3 nanoparticles has good compatibility among the asphalt cement and the modifiers. Moreover, the complex modulus (G*) improves as the concentration of both modifiers increases. The improvement was 63.70% for 5% ASA polymer, and 71.12% for 5% Al2O3 at 75°C. Moreover, the modified asphalt cements demonstrates great resistance to high temperatures rutting, as the enhancement was up to 80 and 59% for 5% concentration of ASA and Al2O3. The modification of asphalt cements provides increasing the creep recovery up to 69.23 and 62.53%. It was found that the usage of ASA polymer and Al2O3 nanoparticles is able to mitigate asphalt cement problems at high temperatures, and 5% is considered as the optimum content of both modifiers.

Effect of Al2O3 Nanoparticles Doping on the Microwave Dielectric Properties of CTLA Ceramics

CaTiO3-LaAlO3 (CTLA) ceramics with Al2O3 nanoparticles were prepared by conventional two-step solid-state reaction, and the sintering behavior and the microwave dielectric proprieties were investigated. The results show that the doping of Al2O3 nanoparticles can promote the growth of uniform grain, increase the density and Q× f value, while it has no obvious influence on the dielectric constant (~45). CTLA ceramics with 0.05 wt% Al2O3 nanoparticles doping, sintered at 1420°C for 4h exhibited the optimal microwave dielectric properties, and CTLA ceramics with 0.2 wt% Al2O3 nanoparticles doping sintered at 1380°C for 4h exhibited the optimal microwave dielectric properties, respectively. A proper increase of Al2O3 nanoparticles content can reduce the sintering temperature.

Infield response of (Al2O3)x/CuTl-1223 nanoparticles-superconductor composites

We have investingated the effects of Al2O3 nanoparticles addition on infield superconducting transport properties of (Cu0.5Tl0.5)Ba2Ca2Cu3O10–δ (CuTl-1223) matrix. The addition of Al2O3 nanoparticles has not affected the crystal structure of host CuTl-1223 phase, which has confirmed the occupancy of these nanoparticles across the inter-granular spaces. A significant resistive transition broadening was observed with externally applied magnetic field from 0–7T. The enhancement of transition broadening was attributed to vortex–antivortex pair-breaking by applied magnetic field and temperature due to increase of dissipation process. Dissipative behavior of resistivity and activation energy {Uo(H,T)} was explained by thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) model. Suppression of Uo(H,T) showed the reduction of flux pinning strength with increasing content of Al2O3 nanoparticles.

Wear Behavior and Micro-structural Study of Al/Al2O3Nano-composites Before and After Heat Treatment

In this study; an advanced ultrasonic assisted stir casting technique has been adopted to incorporate nano-sized Al2O3particle into aluminum alloy 6061 to form particulate nano composite material. Dry sliding wear testing of Aluminum matrix nano composites were performed before and after heat treatment using a pin-on-disc tribometer. The content of Al2O3 nano particles in the composite was varied from 0 to 3.0 weight% and the effect of parameters on wear rate were studied. The sliding wear test is conducted for different loads, speeds and weight % of nano Al2O3particles. The results have shown that wear rate of composite reduces with increasing the nano alumina content. For the same working conditions and processing parameter, wear rate increases with increase in load and with increase in speed. Also, a significant improvement in wear resistance was observed in the heat treated Al-Al2O3 nano-composite as compared un-heat treated composite samples.
