Reimagining neo-chinese interiors via the lens of semiotics

Globalization has inevitably disrupted the sanctity of the local culture of countries in the world under the impact of dominant foreign culture. Ignoring the preservation of domestic culture will lead to cultural homogenization and loss of identity. Attributable to this, protecting local culture has become one of the most crucial agendas in many countries’ cultural development planning, including China. One of the most potent approaches to this is through design. The emergence of Neo-Chinese interior design in China has created a window to forward new interpretations and meanings while preserving the Chinese culture through contemporary interior design. The study attempts to formulate a new design model by interpreting and conveying meanings of Chinese traditional culture through the material form using semiotics. Meanings from Chinese traditional paintings will be decoded to help formulate the structures for the new proposed model of the Neo-Chinese interior design. They will serve as the research variable and the basis of the study. The outcome of this research can be helpful to Chinese interior designers while also acting as a reference for other countries to maintain and develop the nationality of their design.

An Example of an Application Project on Contemporary Office Design

This study aims to define the concept of office spaces and their requirements, as well as the contemporary interior design approaches. It will also cover the interior design and application process for an architecture office in Konya. The company, originally named Çınar Architecture and active in Konya between 1985 and 1990, has been operating as Kerimler Planning Construction Consultancy Company in Konya since 1995. The company requested an interior architecture project for their new location. In the current environment, the office is starting to become outdated and is unable to offer users enough physical amenities. The main goal of the new office’s interior design was to create areas where employers and employees could collaborate in a welcoming and adaptable setting without facing any kind of discrimination. In Konya Meram Pirebi District, the Menekşe Apartment’s ground floor, which is currently a street-level store, is the site of the project, which occupies a total of 280 m2 and consists of a ground + basement. The office occupies 145 square meters on the ground floor of a recently constructed building, with glass extending to the open floor on the south, north, and west facades. The room has a very large opening because the columns are concealed by the walls, making the two stories easily visible from the entrance. The office, which occupies a 135 m2 basement floor, is connected to the elevator and staircase at the back. Natural light enters the basement through the gallery area that is attached to the staircase. Within the parameters of the study, two- and three-dimensional architectural design tools, including phases of the interior design process, were employed in conjunction with a qualitative research method based on inspection and observation. The architectural office put it into practice about half a year after the design stage. The outcome was the creation of a dynamic, modern office analysis that values teamwork and permits the emergence of unique and creative ideas throughout the project.

In today’s times when the world-over people are talking about sustainability, equity and going back to one’s roots - it is crucial to introduce people from all over the globe to the traditional crafts and materials of vernacular, traditional cultures. It is our responsibility as designers to look outside the box and breathe new life into these crafts and artisans, particularly at this time when they are rapidly vanishing. It is challenging to create a luxurious design language using traditional crafts and materials, but doing so will serve as an awareness-raising instrument to inspire more designers and artisans to let their creations stand out above the generally accepted standards of luxurious design around the globe. We as designers, need to investigate various ways to transform these locally produced materials and crafts into an unusually rich environment. Designers should be encouraged to study, understand, document and promote these crafts everywhere in the world, not just in the areas where they originate; it is important to look beyond the boundaries of religions, crafts, and nations - because the ability to create beauty should never be limited to any place or any time. In this context, this study looks at studying a few traditional crafts and hand-finishing techniques used in vernacular built environments of a particular region of India and re-interprets and adapts them in a contemporary interior design scenario to create a luxurious, sustainable, responsible and beautiful design aesthetic. Objectives: This research aims to investigate the functionality of optical illusions in modern interior design and their impact on functional and aesthetic values, ultimately fostering creativity. The significance of this study lies in providing interior designers with design solutions by exploring the utilization of elements such as colors, lighting, shapes, sizes, and textures in optical illusions to enhance visual appeal in modern interior design.
 Methods: The study employed a comparative analytical approach to examine similar cases, while the inductive approach was utilized to determine the mechanisms of incorporating optical illusions in optimizing contemporary design environments.
 Results: The findings confirm that the use of lighting in optical illusions significantly contributes to mitigating certain shortcomings in interior environments. Additionally, the results indicate that the incorporation of geometric shapes in optical illusions fosters captivating contrasts within the components of interior spaces. The study concludes that the sizes and measurements in optical illusions are critical factors influencing the visual and relative dimensions of interior spaces.
 Conclusions: The research demonstrates that employing optical illusions in a deliberate manner plays a vital role in evoking positive emotions and achieving visual coherence within interior spaces.

In the study of contemporary interior design based on the influence of regional culture, the significance of using regional culture in contemporary interior design is clarified firstly, and then combined with the characteristics of contemporary interior design influenced by regional culture, the primary forms of contemporary interior design under the influence of regional culture are analyzed. This article reflects upon the practice of material reuse in contemporary interior design through a case study of the decomposition of the interiors of the Generale Bank in Brussels and the reuse of its fragments in new projects. Three research questions steered the analysis: How were the fragments of the interiors of the Generale Bank preserved and reused? Can the decomposition of historic interiors and the reuse of their fragments be a valuable strategy for their conservation? How does the meaning of the fragment shift in its new context? The first part of the paper presents documentation and critical reflection on the process of decomposition and reuse of the fragments of the Generale Bank. The second part includes a more general discussion of the comparison between modern forms of material reuse and the ancient practice of spolia and considers the potential and pitfalls of reusing fragments as a method for the preservation of historic interiors. The purpose of this study wass to assess the interior design solutions of residential microflats built in large European cities in countries from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). A sample consisting of thirty representative microflats with a floor area below 35 m2 was selected for the study. The flats were intended for either permanent or temporary occupancy and were built over the past fifteen years. The research field covered several large European cities, where demand for such units is high. Comparative analyses of different microflat interior design models were performed. The objective of the study was to determine which contemporary microflat interior design solutions (such as space layout, furniture layout, and design, color, and material design) are optimal and the most commonly used. Sets of design solutions applied in microflats were collected and documented. The study used a range of research methods, including a review of the literature, websites, field research, and comparative analysis. The set of presented interior design solutions and the conclusions drawn from the analyses can be useful to architects and interior designers who design microflats and residential units with greater floor areas, or flats where effective use of floor area is crucial (e.g., student housing). It is also worth mentioning that the existing literature on microflats focuses primarily on the United States and Australia and not Europe, and discusses the economics and ecology of inhabiting microflats.
