Wave‐to‐Wire Model and Output Performance Analysis of a Point Absorption Wave Energy Converter Based on Triboelectric Nanogenerator

Herein, a point absorption wave energy converter (WEC) model combined with a contact–separation mode triboelectric nanogenerator (PAW TENG) is proposed. The model considers the interaction between the hydrodynamic forces captured by a point absorption conversion device of wave energy and the electrostatic force of the TENG. According to the established harmonic oscillation model of the buoy, the buoy's hydrodynamic properties and power generation characteristics are studied using finite element simulation and numerical simulation calculations. The best matching resistor circuit for PAW TENG in regular waves is investigated and analyzed. The electrical characteristics of the PAW TENG in the irregular wave spectrum are also solved. This work will provide design ideas for the experimental design of a novel point absorption WEC.

Effective parameters on polydimethylsiloxane/graphene composite-based triboelectric nanogenerator performance

ABSTRACT This paper systematically investigates the effective parameter on the performance of polydimethylsiloxane/graphene (PDMS@Gr)-based triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) as well as their applications. PDMS@Gr films containing 0, 0.05, 0.5, 1, and 1.5 wt.% graphene are synthesized, and their surface characteristics, mechanical behavior, and electrical properties are characterized. Vertical contact-separation mode TENGs are fabricated, and their performance is evaluated. The results demonstrate that the surface roughness and surface charge density are the most critical parameters for the performance of PDMS@Gr-based TENGs compared to the electrical and mechanical properties of the friction layers. The PDMS@Gr-based TENG with 1 wt.% graphene shows the highest power output of 2.6 W/m2 at an optimized working condition (5 Hz and 15 N). It also exhibits stable power output until 15,000 working cycles and displays battery-free applications by powering a light-emitting diode (LED) array, a calculator, a digital watch, and a digital thermometer.

Polystyrene Waste-ZnO nanocomposite film for energy harvesting via hydrophobic triboelectric nanogenerator: Transforming waste into energy

This research aimed to generate electricity from polystyrene waste materials combined with zinc oxide (ZnO) nanomaterials. Developing alternative polystyrene waste materials for generating electricity in triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) could be beneficial in a circular economy and sustainable development. With the motivation to reduce environmental pollution by using polystyrene waste, a recycled polystyrene-ZnO nanocomposite film (rPS-ZnO NF) was synthesized and served as a triboelectric material for energy harvesting applications. ZnO nanopowder was produced by a low-temperature solution immersion method in conjunction with a simple film-casting method to prepare the rPS-ZnO NF. The effects of varying amounts of toluene as a solvent medium and the immersion time in stearic acid (SA) solution treatment on the structural properties, wettability behavior, surface morphology, chemical bonding properties, surface characteristics, and TENG performance were investigated. In this work, rPS film, rPS-ZnO NF, and SA-treated rPS-ZnO NF were paired with Kapton film as the opposite triboelectric material in constructing the vertical contact-separation mode TENG. Compared to rPS TENG, the rPS-ZnO TENG exhibited a two-fold enhancement in performance (8.2 V) in output voltage and ∼4.5 fold enhancement (28.1 μW/cm2) in power density. Furthermore, following SA treatment, the triboelectric performance further improved, reaching the highest open circuit voltage of ∼8.8 V and the highest power density of 32.0 μW/cm2 for repeated 2 N-solenoid tapping force. The hydrophobic behavior was also improved with the highest water contact angle of 134.7 (when the SA treatment immersion time was 1 h). These findings demonstrate that SA-treated rPS-ZnO NF could be a promising candidate for efficient mechanical energy harvesting with high electrical output and excellent surface wettability. This research not only exhibits an excellent output performance of SA-treated rPS-ZnO TENG, but it also sheds new light on the sustainable approach of converting polystyrene waste into energy-harvesting material.

Design and development of a horizontal contact separated (HCS) test setup for measuring the performance of triboelectric nanogenerator for sustainable energy harvesting applications.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) can play a pivotal role in harnessing non-utilized reciprocating motion and convert it into electrical energy that can later be stored in a battery or capacitor to power various Internet of Things-based smart electronic and wearable devices. Herein, we designed a cost-effective instrumental test bed focused on investigating the output performance of a horizontal contact separation mode triboelectric nanogenerator by varying the input parameters, such as applied force, motor speed, triboplate separation, and frequency of instrumental setup. The test bed mainly consists of three major parts: (i) application of force, (ii) tapping of TENG sample, and (iii) output parameters measurement. The output performance in terms of open circuit output voltage (VOC), short circuit current (ISC), and power density of polydimethylsiloxane-based TENG was monitored and optimized by varying the input parameters. A low-cost current measuring circuitry using an operational amplifier integrated circuit has been proposed with 92% accuracy. The maximum value of VOC and ISC was observed to be 254V and 31.8 µA at a motor speed of 600rpm, the distance between both the plates was 6mm, the input applied force of 40 N, and the striking frequency of 3Hz. The maximum power density of 2.1 W/m2 was obtained at an input impedance of 8 kΩ. The durability of the test bed as well as the TENG sample was also measured for 25h. The degree of uncertainty was measured for VOC, ISC, and applied force and calculated to be 1.62%, 7.45%, and 6.27%, respectively.

Regulating the electrical performance of contact-separation mode triboelectric nanogenerators based on double-sided groove textures

The contact-separation mode triboelectric nanogenerators (CS-TENGs) is a kind of micro/nano electromechanical power system based on the contact electrification and electrostatic induction. With the expansion of application field of the CS-TENG, regulating the electrical performance becomes essential. In this paper, simple and effective methods for the CS-TENG output regulation based on the double-sided groove textures are proposed. To do this, groove textures on both Cu contact electrode and PDMS dielectric layer are fabricated, and influences and mechanisms of the alignment angle (the angle between the direction of groove textures on the Cu electrode and that on the PDMS dielectric layer), matching condition (textures sidewall contact and non-contact) and applied pressure on the CS-TENG output are explored through output tests, contact and electrostatic simulations. It is shown that altering the alignment angle, matching condition and applied pressure of groove texture on the Cu contact electrode and PDMS dielectric layer, could simply regulate the output of CS-TENG, where changing the alignment angle is the most effective. Under low and high applied pressures, the variations of the output voltage with alignment angle from 0˚–90˚ reach to 343.8% and 297.2%, respectively, and CS-TENG at 0˚ angle outputs the maximum voltage under both pressures, while the minimum voltages under the two pressures are exhibited from different angles. The change of contact area induced by the longitudinal deformation and transverse expansion of the groove textures is the main reason for the output regulations.

Boron Minerals with Different Crystal Structures as Performance Manipulators in Triboelectric Nanogenerators

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are energy generation devices that naturally convert mechanical movements into electrical energy through both triboelectric and electrostatic effects. The electricity generation capacity of silicone/boron minerals‐based composite and glass fiber‐based vertical contact separation mode TENGs enhances by adjusting the triboelectrification characteristics by embedding natural boron minerals (NBO) such as borax, colemanite, and ulexite additives. Considering the generated voltages, the NBO‐doped silicone and glass fiber‐based TENGs offer the maximum performance with 2.5 wt% borax, 7.5 wt% colemanite, and 5 wt% ulexite. The highest power density of corresponding NBO‐doped silicone glass fiber TENGs finds as 25.4, 26.03, and 32.03 W m−2, respectively. This work demonstrates that using boron significantly improves the TENG's power and charging capacities fabricated with silicone and glass fiber. Thus, the clean and safe generation of energy will contribute to the reduction of fossil fuel consumption and help protect the environment.

Mica's homo-positive-charging behavior enabled porous elastomer TENG for energy harvesting in high humidity

Tribo-charges upon contact and separation originate from the properties of contacted materials and are of opposite polarities according to the conventional view. Interestingly, mica, as a representative of a series of inorganic materials, always carries positive tribo-charges when two pieces of mica come into contact. Similar homo-charging phenomena have also been observed in other inorganic particles, such as NaCl, quartz, and CaF2. These phenomena are typically encountered during mineral flotation and sand-dust formation and contain abundant triboelectric energy. However, harvesting this disordered and ubiquitous energy is challenging, and a detailed understanding of this homo-positive-charging behavior at the molecular level remains lacking. In this study, the dynamic nature of the homo-positive-charging behavior was verified, and the underlying mechanism for the enhanced evaporation of OH(H2O)n− on the surface of mica was elucidated. Furthermore, mica’s homo-positive-charging behavior was utilized to prepare a porous elastomer, resulting in an endogenous triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) and an optimized contact–separation mode TENG. The maximum output power density was 55 mW/m2, and 83% of the original energy generation retained at a high humidity of 84.3%. This study contributes to the understanding of mica’s tribo-charging behavior and provides a generic method to optimize positive tribo-layer, especially in high-humidity environments, which show promise in a wide range of applications.

Fabrication of high-performance triboelectric nanogenerator based on Ni3C nanosheets to self-power thermal patch for pain relief

In this work, we report a vertical contact-separation mode triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) comprising of Ni3C/PDMS composite and Nylon Nanofibers for self-powering a nichrome wire-based thermal patch for muscular/joint relaxation. An optimised composition of Ni3C (25 wt%) and PDMS as a tribo-negative material and Nylon Nanofibers synthesised via electrospinning on copper electrode foil as a tribo-positive material were used to fabricate the TENG. The fabricated TENG exhibits outstanding output generating an average open circuit voltage of ∼252 V, an average short circuit current of ∼40.87 μA and a peak power of ∼562.35 μW cm−2 at a matching resistance of 20 MΩ by manual tapping. Enhancement in contact area due to electrospun nylon and micro capacitive Ni3C flakes in dielectric PDMS contribute to the exceptional performance of the TENG. The optimised TENG is then connected to a full bridge rectifier with a 100 nF filtering capacitor to convert the AC voltage to a DC output with a peak voltage of ∼5.4 V and a ripple voltage of ∼1.04 V to recharge an ICR 18650 Li-ion battery, which functions as a medium to improve electrical energy flow to the heat patch. The electrical energy is converted into heat energy by a wounded nichrome wire placed inside the heat patch. The nichrome wire of length 3 cm with appropriate number of windings was employed in the heat patch. An increment of 45 °F can be observed by switching the charged Li-ion battery-based circuit ON for just 30 s. The strategy of self-powering a heat patch using this TENG finds enormous applications in physiotherapy and sports to relieve muscle and joint pains.

A general modification of the V-Q-x relationship of the contact-separation mode triboelectric nanogenerator

The V-Q-x relationship is of great importance in theoretical research of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), which however is not entirely consistent with the experimental results. Here, we propose a general modification of the V-Q-x relationship of the contact-separation mode TENG with Fourier transform method. By separating the stable periodic term and the damping term which decays gradually with time from the original V-Q-x relationship, we determine the stable voltage with a constant peak value and modify it to the transient output voltage. The correctness of this modified theoretical relationship has been verified through experimental results. Through this modification, the output performance of TENG-based energy harvesting devices can be more accurately and directly predicted, and theoretical guidance can be provided for TENG-based sensors to invert monitoring target information. The development offers good theoretical guidance, which can advance the theoretical design and optimization of TENG devices.

Engineering of electrodes with 2D Ti3C2Tx-MXene sheets and chloride salt for robust and flexible high electrical power triboelectric nanogenerator

This article focuses on the development of triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) by utilizing advanced 2D nanomaterials with innovative design and easy fabrication method to achieve durable TENG with high-power density and improved cycling performance. Herein, we fabricated a layer-by-layer stacked vertical contact-separation (CS) mode TENG. In this unique design, we incorporated a thin film of micron-sized Ti3C2Tx-MXene ultrathin sheets (TMSs) into a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) based tribo-negative electrode. A tribo-positive layer was prepared by integrating an optimized amount of NaCl into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix. After optimization of both triboelectric layers, the optimized TMS-TENG showed an open-circuit voltage (Voc) ∼ 390 V, short-circuit current (Isc) ∼ 96 μA, and power density of 6.66 W·m−2. The boosted performance is due to the synergistic effect of TMSs, used as a charge trapping layer on the electronegative side, and the impact of an NaCl:PVA impregnated layer on the electropositive side of the TENG. The ultrathin-layered structures of sandwiched TMS film serve bifunctionally as a charge accumulation and charge trapping entity simultaneously, increasing the charge separation due to high dielectric constant, and thus increasing the overall output power of the fabricated TENG. The prepared TMS-TENG was tested as a pressure sensor to monitor different sensitive physiological movements of the human body. Further applications of the designed TMS-TENGs have been revealed by powering more than 500 LEDs, an electronic calulator, and swiftly charging micro-capacitors by utilizing direct output power. By engineering electrodes, we can gain insight into the specific role that TMSs play in enhancing the performance of TENGs. This research provides a new avenue for designing self-powered pressure/motion sensors in robotics and harvesting biomechanical energy as electrical energy for sustainable electronics.

Laser-Induced Graphene Formation on Chitosan Derivatives toward Ecofriendly Electronics

Laser-induced graphene (LIG) has aroused a wide range of research interests ranging from micro-nano energy devices to the Internet of Things (IoT). Nevertheless, the non-degradability of most-used synthetic polymer carbon sources poses a serious threat to the environment. In this work, ecofriendly chitosan-based derivatives, including carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), chitosan oligosaccharide, and chitosan hydrochloride, are successfully converted into LIGs for the first time via a convenient one-step CO2 laser engraving at ambient air. The obtained LIGs are characterized by a three-dimensional hierarchical porous structure and exhibit good sheet conductivity. The consecutive carbonization and graphitization mechanism of target precursors induced by laser heat accumulation is also deeply discussed. Besides, based on a mechanically reliable LIG/CMCS composite film and tribo-negative acrylic/polyimide anti-layers, two contact-separation mode triboelectric nanogenerators are built and their power densities range from 1.44 to 2.48 mW cm–2. These devices with long cycle life can be used for low-frequency mechanical energy harvesting and commercial capacitance charging, which could be potentially applied in the wireless sensor network nodes. Such a family of chitosan derivatives paves a new route for LIG synthesis and provides new ideas for ecofriendly LIG electronics.

Universal Energy Solution for Triboelectric Sensors Toward the 5G Era and Internet of Things.

The launching of 5G technology provides excellent opportunity for the prosperous development of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and intelligent wireless sensor nodes. However, deploying of tremendous wireless sensor nodes network presents a great challenge to sustainable power supply and self-powered active sensing. Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has shown great capability for powering wireless sensors and work as self-powered sensors since its discovery in 2012. Nevertheless, its inherent property of large internal impedance and pulsed "high-voltage and low-current" output characteristic seriously limit its direct application as stable power supply. Herein, a generic triboelectric sensor module (TSM) is developed toward managing the high output of TENG into signals that can be directly utilized by commercial electronics. Finally, an IoT-based smart switching system is realized by integrating the TSM with a typical vertical contact-separation mode TENG and microcontroller, which is able to monitor the real-time appliance status and location information. Such design of a universal energy solution for triboelectric sensors is applicable for managing and normalizing the wide output range generated from various working modes of TENGs and suitable for facile integration with IoT platform, representing a significant step toward scaling up TENG applications in future smart sensing.

On the contact electrification mechanism in semiconductor–semiconductor case by vertical contact-separation triboelectric nanogenerator

With the speed of industrialization accelerating, the traditional energy is in the predicament of being exhausted. Humans urgently need a clean energy to maintain the peace and development. Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is a tiny device that collects and converts the renewable energy, such as wind, vibration and tidal/blue energy, into electrical energy. As the most significant working principle of TENG, contact electrification (CE) has been broadly studied since it was documented thousands of years ago. A large number of related researches are reported. However, most of them are focused on the polymer materials, device structures and potential applications. There are few literatures about the mechanism of CE, especially in the semiconductor–semiconductor case. Semiconductor–semiconductor CE is a promising method to generate electricity, which has been used in many fields, such as the photodetector and displacement sensor. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a serious and detailed theory in order to deeply explain the underlying mechanisms of semiconductor–semiconductor CE. In this work, a novel Fermi level model based on energy band theory is proposed to illustrate the semiconductor–semiconductor CE mechanism. By assembling a ZnO/Si vertical contact-separation (CS) mode TENG, the charge transfer introduced by CE is systematically measured. According to the energy band theory and TENG governing equation, the experimental data is qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed. Moreover, the effects of different concentrations of growth solutions on the morphology of ZnO nanowires and the Fermi level difference between ZnO and Si are explored as well. Results show that it is the Fermi level difference that dominates the short circuit transfer charge amount and direction of semiconductor–semiconductor CE mechanism. Our work can be applied to understand the CE mechanism in semiconductor–semiconductor case and broaden the application prospects of semiconductor-based TENG.

Nanoarchitectonics of Triboelectric Nanogenerator for Conversion of Abundant Mechanical Energy to Green Hydrogen

AbstractIn the present world, the high energy demand rapidly depletes existing fossil fuel reserves, urging the necessity to harvest energy from clean and renewable resources. In this study, the use of a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is shown beyond the conventional practice of use in self‐powered electronics, to the production of green hydrogen from renewable mechanical energy. For the first time the use of a magnetic covalent organic framework composite as positive triboelectric material for a contact‐separation mode TENG (CS‐TENG) in which MXene incorporated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film serves as negative triboelectric material, is demonstrated. A facile way of incorporating micropatterns on the surface of PDMS/MXene film is shown utilizing the advantages of 3D printing technology. The CS‐TENG harvests energy from simple mechanical actions such as human handclapping and toe‐tapping. The energy from such low‐scale mechanical actions is applied for water electrolysis. Scanning electrochemical microscopy is employed to confirm the evolution of hydrogen and oxygen by the harvested electrical energy from mechanical actions. This research is expected to pave the way for producing green hydrogen anywhere, by utilizing the mechanical energy from nature such as raindrops, wind, and the movement of vehicles.

Mylar Interlayer-Mediated Performance Enhancement of a Flexible Triboelectric Nanogenerator for Self-Powered Pressure Sensing Application

A triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is a green energy harvester that transforms mechanical energy from the surroundings and body movements into useful electrical energy by the combined effect of triboelectrification and electrostatic induction. Here, we have developed a flexible organic–inorganic film-based contact separation mode TENG with polyvinyl butyral (PVB) and indium oxide (IO) films as contact materials. A biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate (BoPET) film (known as “Mylar”) has been used as the charge transition-blocking interlayer between the PVB triboelectric layer and the electrode, which prevents the recombination of generated charges with the interfacial charges on the electrode and thereby enhances the electrical output performance. The fabricated flexible PVB-IO TENG having a contact area of 4 cm2 and a separation gap of 5 mm generates an output voltage and a short-circuit current density of ∼700 V and ∼1.52 mA/m2, respectively. An enhancement of ∼85-fold in the peak power density is obtained for the PVB-IO TENG with the BoPET layer at a load resistance of 200 MΩ in comparison with the one without the BoPET interlayer. The as-fabricated device was used for capacitor charging and powering electronic gadgets such as digital thermometers, calculators, and LEDs. Also, the developed PVB-IO TENG has been demonstrated for the mechanical energy scavenging from human motions such as finger tapping, palm tapping, finger bending, and elbow bending. Moreover, the PVB-IO TENG was structurally modified into a self-powered pressure sensor by reducing its contact area and separation gap, which exhibits an excellent sensitivity of ∼4.38 V/kPa in the pressure range from 0.5 to 16 kPa.

Standardized Volume Power Density Boost in Frequency-Up Converted Contact-Separation Mode Triboelectric Nanogenerators.

The influence of a mechanical structure's volume increment on the volume power density (VPD) of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) is often neglected when considering surface charge density and surface power density. This paper aims to address this gap by introducing a standardized VPD metric for a more comprehensive evaluation of TENG performance. The study specifically focuses on 2 frequency-up mechanisms, namely, the integration of planetary gears (PG-TENG) and the implementation of a double-cantilever structure (DC-TENG), to investigate their impact on VPD. The study reveals that the PG-TENG achieves the highest volume average power density, measuring at 0.92 W/m3. This value surpasses the DC-TENG by 1.26 times and the counterpart TENG by a magnitude of 69.9 times. Additionally, the PG-TENG demonstrates superior average power output. These findings introduce a new approach for enhancing TENGs by incorporating frequency-up mechanisms, and highlight the importance of VPD as a key performance metric for evaluating TENGs.

Theoretical boundary and optimization methodology of contact-separation triboelectric nanogenerator

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have exhibited great potential as the promising energy harvesters in recent decades. To obtain superior output performance, advances in materials science and engineering technology have been applied to promote the surface charge density and energy output. In this work, the mathematical derivations have been developed to derive the theoretical boundary under the air breakdown restriction for contact-separation mode TENGs. Through the optimization of limitation equations, mathematical relations were deduced between the output evaluation metrics and TENGs’ design including the structural and material factors. In addition, methodologies for output performance enhancement were proposed, from which an optimized model possessing 10 μm silicone rubber as the dielectric layer exhibits 2.85 mC/m2 in surface charge density and 1.12 mJ in energy output under 2 cm separation distance. This work provides systematical analysis and comprehensive predicts for the theoretical boundary of TENGs’ capability, which gives guidance on the design and optimization for high-performance TENGs.

Effective interfacial energy band engineering strategy toward high-performance triboelectric nanogenerator

Provided that electron transition ascribed to overlapping electron dominates the mechanism of contact electrification of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), the electron transfer process occurs due to the built-up electric field between the triboelectrification surface and bottom electrode. In this work, we embed a solution-processed high-permittivity electron blocking layer (HPEBL) of LaZrO into the classical contact-separation mode TENG to build an energy barrier (ΔE > 1.3 eV) between ITO and PDMS, which could effectively block the transportation of electrons towards the bottom electrode. The surface potential decline rate of PDMS is obviously suppressed, extending the half-charge decay time by ∼3.1 times. A La0.1Zr0.9Ox HPEBL based TENG (H-TENG) demonstrates the electrical outputs with 215 V, 96.3 mA m−2 and 243.3 μC/m−2. Under the external load of 100 MΩ, the average gravimetric/volumetric power density and energy conversion efficiency can be calculated to be 59.34 μW g−1, 152.5 μW cm−3 and 39.2%, respectively. Furthermore, the dielectric behaviors of LaZrO thin films are investigated by metal–insulator-metal (MIM) devices. The Poole-Frenkel (PF) emission is found to dominate the leakage mechanism of LaZrO during operation. Consequently, increasing the relative permittivity and reducing the trap density could be indicated as the optimization orientation of HPEBL.

Performance enhancement of triboelectric nanogenerators using contact-separation mode in conjunction with the sliding mode and multifunctional application for motion monitoring

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), which can extensively harvest environmental mechanical energy, have long been restricted by their motion patterns, surface electric charges, and other factors. In this work, a TENG that cooperates with the vertical contact separation mode TENG (CS-TENG) and the lateral sliding mode TENG (LS-TENG) is proposed. This hybrid mode TENG can effectively improve the output power of the independent mode TENG. In the experiment, CS-TENG and LS-TENG are integrated to work together. In this way, the open circuit voltage of the hybrid mode TENG is determined by the CS-TENG, and the peak-to-peak open circuit voltage of the hybrid TENG can reach 1169 V. The unidirectional short-circuit current of CS-TENG is about 80 μA. The unidirectional short-circuit current of the LS-TENG is about 27 μA. But the unidirectional short-circuit current of the hybrid TENG can reach 187 μA. The self-powered human motion sensors based on CS-TENG were designed for detecting signals of finger bending, gait and somatic joint bending. It can clearly identify the motion signals of different parts, which could provide effective information for post-rehabilitation training of patients with limb injuries, as well as smart medical care.

Calliopsis structure-based triboelectric nanogenerator for harvesting wind energy and self-powerd wind speed/direction sensor

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) can harvest various forms of mechanical energy from the surrounding environment and convert them into electrical energy efficiently. Harvesting wind energy from the environment by TENG could be an ideal way to achieve self-powered sensing systems. Herein, a novel calliopsis-inspired biomimetic TENG (C-TENG) was designed for harvesting wind energy and a self-powered wind-parameter sensor. The open-circuit voltage (Voc) and short-circuit current (Isc) of one unit C-TENG can reach 61.7 V and 0.34μA under a wind speed of 15 m/s at a frequency of 5 Hz, and the peak output power is 11.57 mW/m2 under a load resistance of 100 MΩ. This not only collects wind energy effectively but also could be utilized to detect wind speed and direction as a self-powered wind sensor. In this study, we demonstrate a novel type of contact-separation mode TENG in calliopsis structure for wind energy harvesting and promote novel self-powered wind sensors for meteorological monitoring, agricultural production, and the nautical industry.
