Distribution of maternal risk factors for orofacial cleft in infants in Indonesia: a multicenter prospective study.

The pathogenesis of orofacial cleft (OFC) is multifactorial, involving both genetic and non-genetic factors, the latter of which play a key role in the development of these anomalies. This paper addresses the incidence of OFC in Indonesia, with a focus on identifying and examining the distribution of contributory factors, including parental medical history, pregnancy history, and environmental influences. The study was conducted through the collection of primary data. An interdisciplinary research team from Indonesia administered a standardized questionnaire to parents who had children with OFC and who had provided informed consent. The case group comprised 133 children born with cleft lip and/or palate, and the control was 133 noncleft children born full-term. The risk factors associated with OFC anomalies were analyzed using the chi-square test and logistic regression. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 25. A p-value of 0.05 or less was considered to indicate statistical significance. The study comprised 138 children, of whom 82 were boys (59.4%) and 56 were girls (40.6%). Among them, 45 patients (32.6%) presented with both cleft lip and cleft palate, 25 individuals (18.1%) had a cleft palate only, and 28 patients (20.3%) had a cleft lip only. OFC was found to be significantly associated with a maternal family history of congenital birth defects (p< 0.05), complications during the first trimester (p< 0.05), consumption of local fish (p< 0.05), caffeine intake (p< 0.05), prolonged medication use (p< 0.05), immunization history (p< 0.05), passive smoking (p< 0.05), and X-ray exposure during pregnancy (p< 0.05). The findings indicate close relationships between the incidence of OFC and maternal medical history, prenatal factors, and environmental influences.

Quantifying the contribution of mangroves to local fish consumption in Indonesia: a cross-sectional spatial analysis

Indonesia has lost more mangroves than any other country. The importance of mangroves for carbon storage and biodiversity is well recognised, but much less is known about what they contribute to the communities living near them who are called on to protect them. Malnutrition in Indonesia is high, with more than a third of children stunted, partly due to poor diets. Fish are nutrient-rich and are the most widely consumed animal source food in Indonesia, making the relationship between mangroves and fish consumption of great importance. Aquaculture is also tremendously important for fish production in Indonesia and has replaced large areas of mangroves over the last two decades. We performed a cross-sectional, spatial analysis in this study. We combined data on fish consumption for rural Indonesian coastal households from the Indonesian National Socioeconomic Survey with spatial data on mangrove forest and aquaculture area from the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry to create a cross-sectional spatial dataset. Using a mixed-effects regression model, we estimated to what extent living in proximity to different densities of mangroves and aquaculture was associated with fresh fish consumption for rural coastal households. Our sample included 6741 villages with 107 486 households in 2008. The results showed that rural coastal households residing near high-density mangroves consumed 28% (134/477) more fresh fish and other aquatic animals, and those residing near medium-density mangroves consumed 19% (90/477) more fresh fish and other aquatic animals, than coastal households who did not live near mangroves. Coastal households that lived near high-density aquaculture consumed 2% (9/536) more fresh fish, and those that lived near medium-density aquaculture consumed 1% (3/536) less, than other rural coastal households. Mangroves contribute substantially to the food security and nutrition of coastal communities in Indonesia. This finding means that the conservation of mangroves is important not only for carbon storage and biodiversity, but also for the communities living near them. The purpose of the article is to show the necessity of reducing wholesale domestic prices for Arctic fish and to propose economic methods for solving this problem. The relevance is associated with an un-reasonable increase in wholesale prices, which are the basis of retail prices, resulting in a decrease in the consumption of local fish. The increase in wholesale prices of fisheries in 2014-2015 and in the subsequent period is analyzed. The fundamentals of the world doctrines of cost and value are given, and the absence of factors to justify the increase in wholesale prices on the basis of the labor theory of value is shown. The data on the unreasonably close relationship between wholesale prices for fish in the domestic market of Russia and the exchange prices at which fish products exported to the European Union countries are presented. The possibility of reducing wholesale domestic prices by increasing the supply of fish to the domestic market of Russia in order to achieve the threshold values of the figures indicated in the Doctrine of Food Security is shown. In order to replace exchange foreign prices used in the domestic market of Russia, the need to develop a methodology for determining wholesale prices for the main types of Arctic fish, primarily currency-intensive ones, is substantiated.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances and Mercury in Arctic Alaska Coastal Fish of Subsistence Importance.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and mercury (Hg) are harmful compounds that are widely present in the environment, partly due to spills and atmospheric pollution. The presence of PFAS and Hg in the tissues of animals that are harvested by rural and Indigenous Alaskans is of great concern, yet fish in Arctic Alaska have not previously been assessed for concentrations of PFAS. Fish species of subsistence and recreational importance were collected from nearshore Beaufort and Chukchi Sea, Alaska habitats and assessed for PFAS and total mercury concentrations [THg]. We found multiple PFAS compounds present at low levels (<3 μg/kg) in the muscle tissue of inconnu, broad whitefish, Dolly Varden char, Arctic flounder, saffron cod, humpback whitefish, and least cisco. In addition, [THg] levels in these fish were well below levels triggering local fish consumption guidelines (<170 μg/kg). These initial results indicate no evidence of the Alaska Arctic nearshore fish species examined as an avenue of PFAS or Hg exposure to people who harvest them. Perfil do consumidor de pescado em um município amazônico às margens do rio Solimões, Brasil

This study aimed to characterize the profile of fish consumers in the municipality of Tabatinga - AM. Questionnaires were applied to 100 fish consumers. Data on socioeconomic aspects, consumer preferences, purchase, storage, processing and preparation of fish were obtained. As for consumers, 52% were female, 35% were born in Tabatinga, 51% were between 31 and 50 years old, 69% had a family income of 1 to 2 minimum wages and 47% had completed high school. Fish is part of the diet of 99% of the adult population, with 64% having it 3 times a week. At the time of purchase, there is a preference for whole fish and the preparation of 38% is roasted. The main commercialized species were Liposarcus sp., Mylossoma sp. and C. macropomum. The fish are sold in the form of bunches or kilograms, with prices ranging from 12 to 20 R$/kg. The per capita consumption of local fish is 49.6 kg/person/year. Thus, this study contributes with information to support policies for the sustainable use of fishing resources, regional development related to commercialization, the production chain and the population's eating habits.

Local intensity of artisanal gold mining drives mercury accumulation in neotropical oxbow lake fishes

Driven by surges in global gold prices and additional socio-economic factors, artisanal small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in the Global South is increasing and driving emissions of significant quantities of mercury (Hg) into the air and freshwater. Hg can be toxic to animal and human populations and exacerbate the degradation of neotropical freshwater ecosystems. We examined drivers of Hg accumulation in fish that inhabit oxbow lakes of Peru's Madre de Dios, a region with high biodiversity value and increasing human populations that depend on ASGM. We hypothesized that fish Hg levels would be driven by local ASGM activities, by environmental Hg exposure, by water quality, and by fish trophic level. We sampled fish in 20 oxbow lakes spanning protected areas and areas subject to ASGM during the dry season. Consistent with previous findings, Hg levels were positively associated with ASGM activities, and were higher in larger, carnivorous fish and where water had lower dissolved oxygen levels. In addition, we found a negative relationship between fish mercury levels associated with ASGM and the occurrence of the piscivorous giant otter. The link between fine-scale quantification of spatial ASGM activity and Hg accumulation, as indicated by the result that in the lotic environment, localized effects of gold mining activities are stronger drivers (77 % model support) of Hg accumulation than environmental exposure (23 %) constitutes a novel contribution to a growing body of literature on Hg contamination. Our findings provide additional evidence of high Hg exposure risks to neotropical human and top carnivore populations subject to the impacts of ASGM, which depend on freshwater ecosystems undergoing gradual degradation. The documented spatial variation in Hg accumulation and increased Hg levels in carnivorous fish should serve as a warning to human communities in Madre de Dios to avoid the proximity of high-intensity gold mining areas and minimize local carnivorous fish consumption.

Trace element accumulation in different edible fish species from the Bolivian Amazon and the risk for human consumption

Artisanal mining and erosion of metalbearing soils can contaminate aquatic ecosystems and affect the health of riparian human populations, through metal bio-accumulation processes and fish consumption. Concentrations of eight trace metals (Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Pb, Hg, Ni, Zn) and a metalloid (As) were measured in the muscle tissue of different edible fish species collected from markets of two cities along the Beni River banks, in the Bolivian Amazon. Relationships between the size of fish belonging to different trophic levels (carnivores, omnivores, detritivores and herbivorous) from four different fishing zones were analyzed. The most relevant results corresponded to the detritivore group, whose members exhibited significant positive correlations between the fish size and the concentration of three metals (cadmium, cobalt and nickel).Furthermore, a 3 × 3 scenario-risk analysis was performed to assess local risk for human health. This was done by relating three different scenarios of local fish consumption collected from literature (maximum, average and minimum) and three different levels of trace element concentrations (95th, 50th and 5th percentile) derived from the present study and the Minimal Risk Levels suggested by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. Results of these calculations determined the amount of fish muscle per contaminant that could be consumed per day without risking human’s health. Finally, Target Hazard Quotients were calculated for each trace element, aiming to indicate the potential exposure to each one and the concentration at which no adverse effects are expected.The obtained results made clear that mercury is the only trace element that represents an important health risk to humans within the studied region, considering most of the combinations in the 3 × 3 analysis. Chronic mercury intoxication could occur when consumption of fish in Riberalta or Rurrenabaque exceeded 83 g/day in females and 110 g/day in males.

Elucidating sources of mercury in the west coast of Korea and the Chinese marginal seas using mercury stable isotopes

Nearshore systems play an important role as mercury (Hg) sources to the open ocean and to human health via fish consumption. The nearshore system along East Asia is of particular concern given the rapid industrialization, which contributes to significant anthropogenic Hg emissions and releases. We used Hg stable isotopes to characterize Hg sources in the sediment and fish along the west coast of Korea, located at the northeast of the East China Sea. The Hg isotope ratios of the west coast sediments (δ202Hg; −0.89 to −0.27‰, Δ199Hg; −0.04 to 0.14‰) were statistically similar with other nearshore sediments (δ202Hg; −0.99 to −0.30‰, Δ199Hg; −0.04 to 0.19‰) and overlapped with the industrial Hg source end-member (δ202Hg; −0.5‰, Δ199Hg; 0.01‰) estimated from the Chinese marginal seas. Using a ternary mixing model, we estimated that industrial Hg sources contribute 83–97% in the west coast of Korea, and riverine and atmospheric Hg sources play minor roles in the Korean west coast and the Chinese marginal seas. The comparison between Hg isotope ratios of the sediment and nearshore fish revealed that the fish in the most west coast sites are exposed to MeHg produced in the sediment. At a few southwest coast sites, external MeHg produced in rivers and the open ocean water column appears to be more important as a source in fish. This is supported by much higher δ202Hg (0.74‰; similar to oceanic fish) and lower δ202Hg (−0.71‰; similar to riverine sources) compared to fish collected from other west coast sites influenced by sedimentary MeHg. The substantial Hg contributions from industrial activities suggest the national policies regulating anthropogenic Hg releases can directly mitigate human Hg exposure originating via local fish consumption. This study contributes to the growing regional and global inventories of Hg fluxes and sources exported into coastal oceans.

Biomonitoring of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in minority angler communities in central New York State

Onondaga Lake in central New York State was listed as a Superfund site in 1994 due to industrial disposal of pollutants. A biomonitoring program was conducted to assess exposure to over 70 legacy contaminants and contaminants of emerging concern in populations disproportionately at risk for exposure residing near Onondaga Lake and to educate these communities on how to reduce exposures. The populations of focus were refugees from Burma and Bhutan and low-income, primarily African American, anglers (urban anglers). These communities consume locally caught fish for economic as well as cultural reasons and therefore may be at higher risk of exposure. This study focuses on assessment of exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and associations with local fish consumption. Using respondent driven sampling, 311 refugees and 89 urban anglers were enrolled in the study. Following informed consent, study participants provided blood and urine specimens and completed a questionnaire. Percentiles of locally caught fish meals in the past 12 months by race/ethnicity groups showed that the Burmese participants of Karen ethnicity were the highest consumers, with a median of 135 meals compared to 103 meals for the other Burmese participants, 70 meals for the urban anglers, and 44 meals for the Bhutanese participants. Compared to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2015–16 sample of the general U.S. population, the Karen participants had markedly elevated perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) levels with median serum concentrations 9.5 times greater (41.6 ng/mL vs. 4.4 ng/mL) and 26.9 times greater (2.69 ng/mL vs. 0.10 ng/mL), respectively; the other Burmese participants had moderately elevated levels of PFOS and PFDA with median serum concentrations 3.0 times greater (13.3 ng/mL vs. 4.4 ng/mL) and 7.3 greater times greater (0.73 ng/mL vs. 0.10 ng/mL), respectively; and, PFAS levels were not elevated in the Bhutanese or urban angler cohorts. Male gender was consistently the strongest predictor of PFAS exposure among all study cohorts. A positive association between local fish consumption was indicated only for PFOS among urban anglers. An association between local fish consumption and PFAS was not statistically significant among the refugee cohorts, perhaps due to the lack of ‘lower-end’ exposure or exposure variability. Community events were held by the program staff to present the biomonitoring results and distribute community outreach materials with visual aids specific for the study populations to promote safe fish eating.

Bioaccumulation of current-use herbicides in fish from a global biodiversity hotspot: Lake St Lucia, South Africa

Agricultural pesticides threaten aquatic systems and biodiversity at a global scale, but limited information is available on the accumulation of current-use herbicides in tissues of aquatic organisms. Here, we examine the potential exposure and accumulation of currently used herbicides in two species of fish from Lake St Lucia, a global biodiversity hotspot located in South Africa. Muscle tissue samples were analysed for 11 widely used multi-residue and phenoxy-acid herbicides. Herbicide residues were detected in all samples analysed, with total concentrations ranging from 44.3 to 238 ng g−1 (Clarias gariepinus) and 72.2–291 ng g−1 dw (Oreochromis mossambicus). The most prominent herbicides detected included the two phenoxy-acid herbicides, MCPA (17.6 ± 12 ng g−1) and 2,4-D (28.9 ± 16 ng g−1), along with acetochlor (15.4 ± 5.8 ng g−1), atrazine (12.7 ± 7.1 ng g−1) and terbuthylazine (12.4 ± 12 ng g−1). Results indicate that fish at Lake St Lucia accumulate a complex mixture of herbicides, some previously unreported in tissue, highlighting the potential threat that agricultural runoff may pose to conservation areas. However, assessing the impact of herbicide accumulation on wild fish populations is difficult at present and urgent toxicological data are needed to better understand chronic exposure effects on aquatic organisms. A preliminary human health risk assessment indicated minimal risk associated with the consumption of local fish, but potential additive and synergistic effects of contaminant mixtures remain unknown.

Increasing Local Fish Consumption: A Bayesian Belief Network Analysis

The impact of the recent coronavirus pandemic on world seafood trade highlighted the vulnerability of the industry to international shocks and prompted calls for more diverse supply chains. In this paper, we assess the potential for increasing supplies of currently exported fish products to the local market using a Bayesian belief network model. Based on a survey of over 1000 Queensland residents, we determine the key drivers of consumption of locally produced fish and highlight the potential to engage in marketing strategies that bring the consumer closer to locally produced product (e.g. community supported fishery).

Understanding gear choices and identifying leverage points for sustainable tropical small-scale marine fisheries

In rural coastal areas of most countries of the Global South, small-scale fisheries (SSF) are the main source of food and income, and a key driver of local economies. Ensuring sustainability of SSF requires an understanding of socio-economic and cultural contexts and consideration of the drivers of fishers' behaviour, in particular in terms of spatial and temporal fishing patterns and gear choice. In this study, we assess the contribution of SSF to local fish consumption, explore drivers behind fishers' gear choice and compare the profitability of different fishing gears used in the Colombian Pacific coast, providing context to a discussion on SSF management strategies. We estimated a mean annual fish consumption of 237 kg per capita in the study area, which is higher than most estimates from coastal communities worldwide. Bottom trawls, a gear type banned by the fishing authority, had appealing characteristics for fishers with limited income opportunities: low investment and maintenance costs, low operational risks, high value of target species and high profitability. Users of gillnets of small mesh size (≤2.75”) targeted the most valuable species in the market, white shrimp (Penaeus occidentalis), but their catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) and associated profit varied between villages, likely related to spatial patterns of resource abundance and fishing effort. Longlines were used by a small percentage of fishers who had a higher perception of theft risks than other gear user groups. Commonly used leverage points for SSF sustainability, such as an economic compensation to fishers or redistribution of fishing effort from illegal to legal gears, could also be combined with more impactful ones, such as facilitating fishers’ organizational capacities and empowerment for co-management schemes. Our results provide an essential - and often overlooked - socio-economic perspective for managers in tropical SSF that aim to pursue a holistic approach to fisheries management, based on an improved understanding of the incentives and constraints that influence fishing behaviour.

Establishment of geochemical baseline and multiple assessment of vanadium pollution in sediment cores from the two cascade reservoirs, North China

Vanadium (V) is a potential toxic pollutant, and thus, V pollution in reservoir sediment should be scientifically evaluated because reservoirs are the main source of drinking water in China. However, the pollution assessment of V in reservoir sediment is often overestimated or underestimated due to the limitation for selecting local background values. In this study, the selection of the V background value in sediments was based on regional geochemical baseline (RGB) model. Multiple methods including geo-accumulation index (Igeo), potential ecological risk index (EI), and health risk assessment were applied to evaluate V pollution in sediment cores collected from the Panjiakou-Daheiting Reservoirs (PDR). The results show that the mean value of V concentrations in the PDR sediment cores was 92.86mg/kg (57.69-141.19mg/kg), which is higher than the soil background in Hebei Province and stream sediment values in China. V concentrations in the Panjiakou Reservoir were higher than those in the Daheiting Reservoir. The RGB value of V was 96.33mg/kg in the PDR sediments. A comparison of the V concentrations and RGB values in the sampling sites indicated that half of these sites are impacted by anthropogenic inputs. Among the sites influenced by human activity, the average anthropogenic contribution was 9.9%, suggesting that majority of V in the PDR sediments originated from natural source. The pollution assessments of V were evaluated using Igeo and EI with RGB as the background value, and results indicated that the sediments in the PDR were not polluted with V. The environmental impact assessment model was also established for calculating V accumulation in fish due to sediment resuspension. Then, health risk assessment model was applied to further calculate the health risk to residents due to fish consumption. The evaluated target hazard quotient demonstrated that local fish consumption produced no adverse effect on human health during sediment disruption.

Dynamics of (total and methyl) mercury in sediment, fish, and crocodiles in an Amazonian Lake and risk assessment of fish consumption to the local population

Increasing concerns have been raised about the toxicity of mercury (Hg) to humans, especially for those that consume a great amount of fish. High Hg concentrations have previously been measured in Amazonian waterbodies, both resulting from natural and anthropogenic sources. However, few studies have been conducted so far in Amazonian lakes that are fished by local populations. In addition, few of those studies included methylmercury (MeHg), the most toxic and bioaccumulative Hg form, and evaluated the influence of physico-chemical conditions and season on Hg dynamics. In the present study, total Hg (THg) and MeHg concentrations were measured in bottom sediment as well as in two fish and two crocodile species of the Amazonian Cuniã Lake. Bottom sediment MeHg concentrations were higher in the dry season than in the wet season, which is related to differences in physico-chemical (pH and electrical conductivity) conditions. Diet appeared to be related with animal tissue MeHg concentrations, with the herbivorous fish having lower MeHg levels than the predatory fish and crocodiles. Based on the measured tissue concentrations and published data on local person weight and fish consumption, MeHg risk to Cuniã Lake populations was estimated. Although the MeHg fish tissue concentrations did not exceed national and international standards, a significant risk to the local population is anticipated due to their high fish consumption rates. A longitudinal study of polychlorinated biphenyls and neuropsychological function among older adults from New York State.

Cross-sectional studies have linked greater polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) exposure to adverse neuropsychological effects in older adults, including learning, memory, and depressive symptoms. However, no studies among older adults have evaluated the association over time. To assess the effect of serum PCB levels on neuropsychological function over a 14-year period in a cohort of older men and women from a PCB-contaminated area of New York State. In 2000-2002, we assessed serum PCB levels and neuropsychological function (including the California Verbal Learning Test Trial 1 (CVLTT1) for verbal memory and learning, and the Beck Depression Index (BDI) for depressive symptoms) in 253 men and women, ages 55-74 years. A total of 116 (46%) persons repeated the PCB and neuropsychological assessment 14 years later. To assess the association over time, we used generalized estimating equations with clustering variables time, total PCB (∑PCB), and ∑PCB × time, and adjusted for baseline age, sex, smoking, and total serum-lipids. For statistically significant ∑PCB × time interactions, we evaluated the association between PCBs and either verbal memory and learning or depressive symptoms while holding ∑PCB constant at the 10th and 90th percentiles to clarify the direction of the interaction. Over the study period, serum ∑PCB levels (wet-weight) declined by 22%, and were associated with different patterns of change over time for memory (∑PCB × Time β = 0.08 p = 0.009) and depressive symptoms (∑PCB × Time β = -0.16 p = 0.013). Specifically, verbal memory and learning decreased (β = -0.08 p = 0.008) and depressive symptoms increased (β = 0.17 p = 0.008) among persons with low exposure (∑PCB levels at the 10th percentile), while persons with high exposure (90th percentile) showed non-significant improvements. In this cohort, declining ∑PCB levels were likely due at least in part to low rates of local fish consumption in recent decades, given the ban since 1976. The decreased verbal memory and learning and increased depressive symptoms over time among persons with low serum ∑PCB levels is consistent with studies of normative aging. However, the small improvements in those outcomes among those with high serum ∑PCB levels was unexpected. Healthy survivor selection bias or uncontrolled confounding may explain this result. It may also indicate that the neurotoxic impacts of PCBs in older adults are not permanent, but future studies are needed to confirm this possibility.

Ratio of dopamine, hormones, autoantibodies of the pituitary-thyroid body and regimen factorsin the indigenous population of Yamal

The aim is to study the problem of the actual nutrition effect on the state of the pituitary-thyroid body in the indigenous population of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District in connection with the change of traditional nutrition and the deteriorating environmental situation. Methods. 212 inhabitants (aged 21-50 years old) were surveyed, among them 63 - representatives of tundra and 149 -settlement population. The levels of hormones, autoantibodies, dopamine, cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) were determined by immunoenzyme and radioisotope methods in serum and plasma. The absolute values of the actual magnitudes of the daily average diet, the medians of the indicators, the percentages of their deviations from the reference limits, the Spearman's correlation coefficients were calculated. Results. The tundra population in comparison with the settlement is characterized by a lower content of free thyroxine, an integral thyroid index against the background of higher levels of thyrotropine and thyreoglobulin with lowering levels of antibodies to thyroglobulin. In the tundra population, the daily intake of deer's blood, broad whitefish, butter, macaroni and flour is higher, while in the settlement - chicken, cheese, and apples. In the tundra population, positive correlations with cAMP content were revealed with the consumption of broad whitefish, vendace, local berries, carrots, onions, vegetable oil and negative - with the consumption of smoked sausage and tea. Consumption of pike, smelt negatively correlated with the content of total and free thyroxine fractions. Negative links were found between the amount of broad whitefish consumption and the thyroglobulin content, and the antibodies content to thyroglobulin and thyroperoxidase - positive. Conclusions. The thyroid status and feeding habits in tundra and settlement indigenous people are different. Traditional foods are positively correlated with cAMP content. The consumption of local fish negatively correlates with the content of thyroglobulin, iodothyronines and positively with the levels of autoantibodies.

Exploring Singapore\u2019s consumption of local fish, vegetables and fruits, meat and problematic alcohol use as risk factors of depression and subsyndromal depression in older adults

BackgroundDepression is a chronic mental disorder that severely impacts the older adult population globally. Nutritional psychiatry is an approach that has gained traction over the years. Exploring locally relevant consumption of common types of fish, vegetables and fruits (V&F), meat and problematic alcohol use (PAU) as risk factors associated with depression and subsyndromal depression (SSD) could reveal modifiable factors that could be targeted in the local older adult population in Singapore.MethodsData collected from the Well-being of the Singapore Elderly (WiSE) study, a cross-sectional population-based epidemiological study of Singapore’s older adult population was analysed for the purposes of this study. Two thousand five hundred sixty-five participants were recruited and comprised of Singapore citizens and permanent residents aged ≥60 years. Data on fish, meat, and V&F consumption were collected using the sociodemographic and risk factor questionnaire. The CAGE (Cut, Annoyed, Guilt, and Eye-opener) questionnaire was used to determine PAU. The Geriatric Mental State-Automated Geriatric Examination for Computer Assisted Taxonomy (GMS-AGECAT) was used to obtain participants’ diagnosis of depression or SSD. A multinomial logistic regression was used to explore the relationship between depression and dietary factors.ResultsConsumption of V&F in the last 3 days was less likely to be associated with depression and SSD. Frequent consumption of specific species of fish was associated with depression and SSD. PAU and the frequent consumption of Himantura gerrardi (stingray) were more likely to be associated with SSD. Finally, meat consumption was more likely to be associated with depression and SSD.ConclusionsThe preliminary findings of the study support a need for healthy eating for the older adult population in Singapore. Further directions include a more thorough health and nutrition survey to capture accurate diets among the older adults in Singapore.

In this project the target species are limpets (Patella aspera and Patella candeii), sea snail (Phorcus sauciatus), and big deep-sea crabs (Cancer bellianus, Chaceon affinis and Paromola cuvieri), among others. In 2017 the project was presented and promoted in all the geographic areas with all partners involved, and from there one informative article and seven scientific articles were published. In 2018 the dissemination of the project activities started with agro-fishing and restaurant and tourism industry events, and also the “ULPGC Canary Gastronomy Center” was designed and created at the University of Las Palmas. In Madeira Island the Project was presented in several events such as: “Rota do Atum”, “III Feira do Mar e do Pescador”, “XIV Festa da Lapa”, “Conferências do Mar” and “Ciência no Mercado”, among others. Lectures were given for different target publics and workshops and dissemination activities were developed involving around 2,500 participants. The MARISCOMAC project has the ambitious purpose of carrying out its activities, not only addressed to the stakeholders of the fishing sector but to the whole society, thus raising awareness about the safe consumption of local fish obtained in a sustainable way.
