Examining the Relationship between Consumption of Counterfeit Apparel and Construction of Self-Identity: A Study of Pakistani Women

The production, sale, and purchase of counterfeit apparel are illegal and unethical and in most cases are secret activities. Despite a number of campaigns to discourage piracy of various merchandise, the fashion industry in Pakistan is unable to weed out this bug from the markets. This study intends to examine the association between the consumption of counterfeit goods and the construction of self-identity. The paper, drawing upon thirty-six detailed interviews with female participants who owned both branded apparel and their copies, argues that the purchase and consumption of counterfeit apparel provides real and symbolic benefits to consumers, which contributes to the creation of their identity and projection of their desired social self-image. Participants described three important benefits that can be enjoyed through the consumption of counterfeit apparel: to be efficient by utilizing limited resources to the fullest; to have fun by going through risk, enjoyment and adventure; and to mislead others by hiding the reality of their clothes. Research findings indicate that In addition, when consumers of counterfeit apparel successfully accomplish these goals, they are able to construct a confident self-identity through which they portray themselves as savvy consumers to others. The present study can enrich and update the existing body of knowledge regarding the consumption of counterfeit products. It can also enable apparel manufacturers to tap into the psyche and motivations of consumers who purchase counterfeit apparel and too can provide them with guidelines to attract and retain consumers.

Theft of original ideas is the worst form of robbery in the fashion industry today. The production, distribution and consumption of counterfeit goods are increasing at an alarming rate. A considerable amount of time and effort is spent in innovating and inventing distinctive designs and establishing a trademark. The appeal and drive of luxury designer products has fuelled consumers’ desire for luxury designer brands and thus leading to their counterfeited versions. Only few consumers can actually purchase a complete wardrobe of luxury designer brands such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, etc. so in an effort to acquire designer concept the others buy luxury designer counterfeits (Mintel 2006). This paper aims to study the consumers who willingly purchase non deceptive counterfeit brands in India; further the purpose of this research is to examine the influencing factors that affect the purchase intention of luxury fashion counterfeit consumers.

Coping with copies: The influence of risk perceptions in luxury counterfeit consumption in GCC countries

This research investigates counterfeit luxury consumption in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, where consumers are so affluent that their consumption of counterfeit goods is surprising. An exploratory quantitative survey conducted in the United Arab Emirates demonstrates that though GCC nationals do purchase counterfeit luxury products, the perceived performance, psychosocial, and moral risks might prevent them from the engagement in such consumption. Based on 19 in-depth interviews, a follow-up qualitative study identifies the strategies Emiratis use to cope with the cognitive dissonance that occurs from the perception of those risks. The findings are of major interest for public policy makers and luxury brand managers fighting counterfeiting.

Lost in Translation: A Critique of Copyright and the Aesthetics of Re-production in China

Widely derided for its materialistic culture of ‘‘cheap knock-offs,’’ the growing Chinese middle class has struggled to wean itself from the re-production and status-based consumption of counterfeit goods and Western aesthetics. From the Chinese re-production of canonical icons of Western modernity, to the more recent copying of the aesthetics of contemporary architecture abroad, the legality of copying has centered on the visual like-ness of a copy to its original. However, this preoccupation with visual aesthetics has suppressed more productive questions about the critical cultural functioning of copying in better understanding what a copy says about its copier and Chinese national identity.

The literature addressing the counterfeit of luxury brands examines a wide range of antecedents of purchase and product attributes, soc io-demographic factors and attitudes. Sharma and Chan (2011) developed a scale proneness of counterfeits consumption (Counterfeit proneness - CFP ) and defined the cons truct as a personality trait. We argue that that this construct is not a personality trait , but rather a set of attitudes . The goal is to verify the properties of the scale and if it is associated with the future purchase intention and past behavior. Quantitative research based on a survey used a structured questionnaire administered into a convenience sampl e. A factor analysis with principal components and logistic regression was conducted in 453 completed questionnaires. The construct of proneness to purchase counterfeit products did not differ from the items of the attitude towards counterfeit products scale. A new construct consisting of items of the scales of readiness and attitude was i dentified (Attitudes of Proneness to Purchase Counterfeits (APCF) and showed predictive ability in relation to past purchases and, albeit limited, to purchase intentio n. “Fake product? Why not!” Attitudes toward the consumption of counterfeit goods in CEE as shown on the example of Slovakia

This article focuses on the increasing consumption trend of counterfeit goods in the countries of CEE and on the consequences for the global market. Counterfeiting is not longer typical only for the luxury market, where branding together with genuine source plays a crucial role and the business of top luxury is rising during the crisis. New categories of counterfeit goods are emerging constantly, including electronics and computer parts, pharmaceuticals, even FMCG such as food, beverages or cosmetics. This article presents data from GfK research on attitudes towards counterfeit goods in Slovakia and puts it to the context of other CEE countries. It gives clear managerial implications on how to communicate the importance of originality, benefits for the consumer when consuming original goods and social marketing of ethical consumption.

PurposeThe production, distribution and consumption of counterfeit goods have been increasing at an alarming rate. Current legislation addresses the supply side of the problem, but not the demand side of the problem. The purpose of this paper is to examine, empirically, factors affecting consumer demand for counterfeit goods were analyzed.Design/methodology/approachThe economic theory of consumer demand provided the theoretical framework. Data were collected from students enrolled at a major mid‐western university, and logistic regression was used to estimate demand functions for counterfeit goods.FindingsThe results indicated that student sensitivity to the counterfeit problem did not significantly deter the purchase of counterfeit goods.Research limitations/implicationsEducators in textiles and apparel should have a vested interest in providing education about counterfeiting, resulting in students with greater sensitivity to the issue.Originality/valueThe production, distribution and consumption of counterfeit goods have been increasing at an alarming rate. Current legislation addresses the supply side of the problem, but not the demand side of the problem. Consumer education may be a feasible approach for addressing the demand side of the problem.

Fake Objects, True Love: The Symbolic Aspects of Consumption of Counterfeit Goods

The article explains the voluntary consumption of counterfeit goods as an example of the productive nature of consumption trends. The use of the object, as well as the symbolic manipulation operated by the consumer, in fact represents a new manufacturing process for the good itself, making the consumed object radically different from the original one. Cultural elements are essential in the voluntary consumption of counterfeit goods, since without them it is not possible to understand the scope and the diffusion of the non-deceptive counterfeiting phenomenon. Indeed, the theory linking counterfeit goods to a mere question of price is contradicted in practice by the widespread phenomenon of mixed consumption. The data on consumers of fashion goods, reveal that subjects radically manipulate objects on an ontological level. Strictly speaking, the consumed objects are not merely true or false, but equally likely. However, these processes can apply only to people with some knowledge of fashion, allowing us to conclude that those who have a high cultural capital occupy an advantaged position.

The Consumption of Counterfeit Goods

Social science, policy and popular discourse around counterfeiting regularly position consumers of counterfeit goods as part of a technological elite or as motivated by anti-capitalist or anti-corporate positions. In order to explore this construction and highlight its associated limitations, this article presents quantitative data collected through postal and web-based questionnaires looking at the frequency, location and motivations for the purchase of counterfeit leisure items for consumers in the United Kingdom.The article suggests that the purchase and consumption of counterfeit goods is commonplace across a broader variety of age, gender and socio-economic status categories than often assumed.The study also highlights the value of viewing the consumption of counterfeit goods as social and situated, occurring within existing social networks and familiar locations, and as closely related to other consumption practices.
