Clinical Outcomes of Patients With Gastric Phytobezoars: Implication of Drinking Carbonated Beverages as a Treatment

Objectives: Although phytobezoars are the most common type of gastric bezoar, a standardized treatment method has not been adopted.Methods: In this study, we evaluated patient clinical features and treatment outcomes following the use of different treatment methods, with a focus on the efficacy of carbonated beverage consumption. A review of medical charts and endoscopic reports revealed 15 cases of gastric phytobezoars from September 2008 to May 2016. Patient medical records were retrospectively reviewed to assess patient clinical characteristics and treatment results.Results: The mean patient age was 71.3±11.1 years. The most common symptoms were epigastric pain (46.7%) and bloating (40.0%). A history of intra-abdominal surgery was found in 26.7% of the patients. The mean bezoar size was 47.3±14.5 mm. The final successful treatment methods were consumption of a carbonated beverage alone (n=7, 46.7%), endoscopic removal (n=5, 33.3%), and surgery (n=3, 20.0%). During the treatment course, few patients (3/15, 20.0%) experienced small bowel obstructions after the consumption of the carbonated beverage and endoscopic fragmentation; these obstructions required surgical interventions. There was no significant difference in the baseline characteristics between patients successfully or unsuccessfully treated with the carbonated beverage.Conclusions: Most patients presenting with gastric phytobezoars can be successfully treated by consuming carbonated beverages in conjunction with endoscopic therapy. However, small bowel obstructions may occur due to the migration of a fragmented bezoar, necessitating surgical intervention.

Risk factors for noncarious cervical lesions: A case-control study.

Noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) are multifactorial and can be caused by the anatomical structure of the teeth, erosion, abrasion and abnormal occlusion. The aim of this case-control study was to explore the risk factors for NCCLs. Cone-beam computed tomography was used to determine whether a wedge-shaped defect existed at the cementoenamel junction. We compared 63 participants with NCCLs with 63 controls without NCCLs, matched for sex, age (±1 year) and toothbrushing-related factors (e.g., type of bristle and brushing patterns, frequency and strength). All participants were asked to complete a questionnaire about self-administered daily diet habits and health condition. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine the risk factors for NCCLs. Significant variables in the univariate analysis (i.e., p < .2) included frequency of carbonated beverage consumption, sella-nasion-point B angle (SNB) and Frankfort-mandibular plane angle (FMA). Multivariate logistic regression demonstrated that the consumption frequency of carbonated beverages (odds ratio [OR] = 3.147; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.039-9.532), FMA (OR = 1.100; 95% CI, 1.004-1.204) and SNB (OR = 0.896; 95% CI, 0.813-0.988) was independent influencing factors. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) value of regression Model 1 (established with the frequency of carbonated beverage consumption, FMA, SNB and sleep bruxism) was 0.700 (95% CI, 0.607-0.792; p < .001), and that of regression Model 2 (established using the frequency of carbonated beverage consumption, FMA and SNB) was 0.704 (95% CI, 0.612-0.796; p < .001). The consumption frequency of carbonated beverages and FMA was risk factors for NCCLs; the higher the frequency of carbonated beverage consumption and FMA, the higher was the probability of NCCLs. SNB was a protective factor for NCCL occurrence; the larger the SNB, the lower was the probability of NCCL occurrence. These findings have further clarified the aetiology of NCCLs and provided clinicians with valuable insights into strategies for preventing the loss of dental tissue.

Comparative evaluation of remineralization potential of novel bioactive agents on eroded enamel lesions: A single-blinded in vitro study

Objective: The escalating prevalence of noncarious tooth wear stands as a critical concern in the backdrop of evolving lifestyles and dietary patterns. Dental erosion, a progressive condition induced by both endogenous and exogenous acidic influences, directly impacts enamel integrity, resulting in surface loss. The contemporary surge in carbonated beverage consumption further exacerbates this erosive milieu, underscoring the urgency for dental practitioners to adopt meticulous treatment strategies. Existing literature underscores a noteworthy 94% reduction in tooth erosion risk for individuals abstaining from sweetened soft beverages, emphasizing the imperative for a well-devised remineralization protocol to counter demineralized surfaces. Methodology: Seventy-three enamel specimens were taken. Forty samples were subjected to pre-operative hardness testing, and five samples were subjected to baseline EDX evaluation followed by grouping of samples (Group 1 = control Group; Group 2 = casein phosphopeptide–amorphous calcium phosphate fluoride [CPP-ACPF] Group; Group 3 = Biomin F Group; and Group 4 = self-assembling peptide [SAP] P-114 Group). A demineralization–remineralization cycle was carried out for 5 days followed by testing through Vickers Microhardness Tester, EDX Evaluation, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) Imaging. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance followed by intergroup analysis using Tukey’s post hoc test with SPSS software 25.0 version. Results: The mean percentage change in microhardness values was 30.05% in Group 1, 24.21% in Group 2, 18.85% in Group 3, and 12.08% in Group 4. The mean Ca/P ratio of samples tested through EDAX was 2.20 at baseline, 1.40 in Group 1 (Control Group), 1.62 in Group 2 (CPP-ACPF), 1.82 in Group 3 (Biomin F), and 2.01 in Group 4 (SAP-P114). Postintervention values were statistically significant from baseline values in both parameters. Conclusion: Curodont Protect exhibits superior efficacy, offering valuable insights for future in vivo studies and clinical applications. The multifaceted evaluation, encompassing microhardness testing, SEM analysis, and EDXS assessment, contributes to a nuanced interpretation of the agents’ impact, paving the way for informed decisions in clinical practice and future research endeavors.

The Relationship Between 3-6 Years Old Preschool-Age Children’s Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Consumption Rate and Their Parents

Objective: To investigate the relationship between preschool-age children’s sugar-sweetened beverages consumption rate and their parents, and to provide reference for kindergartens to carry out sugar-sweetened beverages consumption education. Methods: Using convenience sampling from November to December 2021, 4072 parents of preschool-age children from 29 kindergartens in 10 district of Chongqing completed questionnaires. Logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between Preschool-age Children’s sugar-sweetened beverages consumption rate and their parents. Results: The preschool-age children’s sugar-sweetened beverages consumption rate from high to low was 53.8% for fruit and vegetable juice beverage, 52.2% for vegetable protein beverage, 30.9% for carbonated beverage, 27.5% for tea beverage and 2.3% for energy beverage. There were significant differences between different gender, age, native place and parental education level children’s sugar-sweetened beverages consumption rate (both P<0.05), the energy beverage consumption rate of male children (2.9%) was higher than female children (1.5%); the consumption rates of fruit and vegetable beverage, tea, vegetable protein beverage and energy beverage in 6-year-olds (55.6%, 35.9%, 57.3%, 4.6%) were all higher than those in 3-5 years old; the tea beverage consumption rate of rural children (31.6%) was higher than urban children (26.2%); the carbonated beverage and tea beverage consumption rate of children whose parental education level was college degree or below (32.1%, 32.6%) was higher than that of children whose parental education level was bachelor degree or above (29.0%, 28.1%). Parents' consumption of fruit and vegetable juice beverage, tea beverage, vegetable protein beverage and energy beverage were protective factors for children's consumption rate of these four beverages. Parents’ carbonated beverage consumption were not associated with children’s consumption rate of carbonated beverage. Conclusion: The preschool-age children’s sugar-sweetened beverages consumption rate showed an increased trend. Kindergartens should guide parents to urge children to stay away from sugar-sweetened beverages based on the importance of parents in children’s education.

Predictors of sugar-sweetened carbonated beverage consumption and its effect on adiposity parameters of female Saudi students.

The prevalence of obesity has recently increased, accompanied by a steep increase in the consumption of sugar-sweetened carbonated beverages (SSCBs). This cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the impact of SSCB consumption on adiposity parameters and to identify factors associated with increased SSCB intake among young adult females in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. A validated closed questionnaire including 2 sections, general socioeconomic and behavioral characteristics and anthropometric measurements, was used for data collection of female students (n = 1616) from Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), and body composition were measured using an Omron HBF-510 body composition analyzer. Overall, 30.2% of the study participants consumed soda regularly. However, the percentages of occasional and never/rare soda intake were 40.1% and 29.7%, respectively. The results showed that BMI, WC, HC, body fat, and visceral fat increased with increasing SSCB intake. Physical inactivity, low income, smoking, low daily water intake, and obesity were associated with increased consumption of SSCB. In conclusion, a high rate of SSCB consumption increased obesity and body fat content in young adult females in Makkah City. Physical inactivity, low income, smoking, low daily water intake, and obesity were identified as predictors of increased SSCB consumption. Specific health education programs and effective public awareness campaigns could be held to address unhealthy SSCB drinking patterns to help improve young women's health.

Effects of Carbonated Beverage Consumption on Oral pH and Bacterial Proliferation in Adolescents: A Randomized Crossover Clinical Trial.

Sugary soft drinks modify salivary pH and favor bacterial proliferation and are associated with the development of caries. Information on the effects of consuming carbonated drinks without sucrose is limited. Methods: In this crossover clinical trial, salivary and dental biofilm pH were determined at 0, 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, and 60 min after the participants (n = 18) ingested a soft drink with sucrose, a soft drink with aspartame/acesulfame K, carbonated water, and plain water on different days. Dental biofilm cultures were conducted at 0- and 120-min. Results: Salivary pH decreased significantly after ingestion of the sucrose-containing soft drink when compared with the other types of beverages (median difference, -0.3--0.4, p ≤ 0.05), and the greatest difference was found with mineral water. A greater bacterial proliferation (Colony Forming Units [CFU]) was observed after ingestion of the drink with sucrose (↑310 × 103 CFU, p ≤ 0.01), followed by the drink with aspartame/acesulfame K (↑160 × 103 CFU, p ≤ 0.01) and carbonated water (↑60 × 103 CFU, p ≤ 0.05). No significant changes in bacterial proliferation were observed after the consumption of natural water. Conclusions: Ingestion of sucrose-containing soft drinks favors the acidification of salivary pH and the bacterial proliferation of dental biofilm. Although to a lesser extent, soft drinks containing aspartame/acesulfame K also favor bacterial proliferation.

Association of sweetened carbonated beverage consumption during pregnancy and ADHD symptoms in the offspring: a study from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa)

PurposeIntrauterine exposures influence offspring health and development. Here we investigated maternal intake of sweetened carbonated beverages (SCB) during pregnancy and its association with ADHD symptoms in the offspring.MethodsThis study was based on the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) and the Medical Birth Registry of Norway. Maternal diet mid-pregnancy was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). All mothers who responded to the FFQ and a questionnaire when their child was 8 years of age were included (n = 39,870). The exposure was defined as maternal intake (daily servings) of SCB, using no daily intake as reference. Outcome was offspring ADHD symptoms, evaluated as a continuous standardized ADHD score and as a binary outcome of six or more ADHD symptoms vs. five symptoms or less. Associations were analysed using log-binomial regression and linear mixed regression models with adjustment for covariates.ResultsThe adjusted regression coefficients for the standardized ADHD offspring symptom score were 0.31 [95% confidence intervals (0.001, 0.62)] and 0.46 (0.15, 0.77) for maternal daily intake of ≥ 1 glasses of SCB, when the models included adjustments for total energy intake or energy intake from other sources than SCBs and sweet drinks, respectively. The corresponding adjusted relative risks were 1.16 (1.004, 1.34) and 1.21. (1.05, 1.39) for drinking ≥ 1 glasses daily.ConclusionIn a large pregnancy cohort with offspring followed until 8 years of age, we found an association between maternal daily intake of SCB and offspring ADHD symptoms. These results suggest a weak positive relationship between prenatal exposure to SCB and offspring ADHD.

An Investigation on Korean Adolescents' Dietary Consumption: Focused on Sociodemographic Characteristics, Physical Health, and Mental Health.

The promotion of healthful dietary intake in adolescents is an important public health concern, as obesity is on the rise among adolescents. The current study aimed to determine the association between sociodemographic characteristics and dietary intake (breakfast, vegetables, milk, fruits, fast food, carbohydrate beverages, and caffeine beverages) and to examine the influences of physical and mental health on dietary intake. A nationally representative sample of 187,622 adolescents who attended middle and high schools and participated in the Korean Youth Risk Behavior Survey (2015, 2017, and 2019) was used. The results showed a decrease in breakfast, vegetable, milk, and fruit consumption and an increase in the obesity rate from 2015 to 2019. There was a significant association between dietary intake and gender, economic status, BMI, and academic achievement. Multiple logistic regression analysis results revealed that the consumption of breakfast, vegetables, milk, and fruit were associated with greater odds of having enough sleep. Fast food intake was shown to be a significant risk factor for depression with an odds ratio of 1.204 (95% CI = 1.169–1.239), and carbonated beverage consumption was shown to be a significant risk factor for stress with an odds ratio of 1.042 (95% CI = 1.030–1.054). These results provide fundamental data that can be used to develop an effective nutrition intervention program or nutrition policy for adolescents or school food service programs.

Is There an Impact of Social Factors and Food on Early Childhood Caries? A Cross-Sectional Study

This study aimed to investigate the impact of dietary habits on early childhood caries (ECC) in preschool children. We recruited 153 children between 30 and 71 months of age who applied to a state hospital dental clinic in Ankara, Turkey. The decayed-missing-filled teeth (dmft) index was calculated with a questionnaire that investigated the number of decayed, missing, and/or filled milk teeth. Participants formed three separate groups according to their caries history (Group 1: caries-free children, Group 2: children with ECC, Group 3: children with severe ECC [S-ECC]). The mean dmft score was 4.0 ± 3.9, and 20.2% of children were in caries-free group ( n = 31), 45.8% were in ECC group ( n = 70), and 34.0% were in S-ECC group ( n = 52). The carbonated beverage consumption and the dmft index score was directly proportional ( p &lt; .05). Besides, there was a significant correlation between anti-cariogenic foods such as milk and eggs and dmft index score ( p &lt; .05). S-ECC was associated with higher consumption of French fries (β = .052; 95% Cl −0.141, 1.827) and lower consumption of egg (β = −0.052; 95% Cl −0.103, 0.001). Consequently, the fast-food-style Western diet was closely related to tooth decay, and healthy dietary habits such as the Mediterranean-style diet may provide crucial protection against dental caries in preschool children.

Sugar-containing carbonated beverages consumption is associated with hyperuricemia in general adults: A cross-sectional study

Background and aimsResearch evidence supports a positive link between sugar-containing soft beverages and hyperuricemia. However, data thus far are mostly from Caucasian populations. And in sugar-containing soft beverages overall, sugar-containing carbonated beverages are purchased most often. Therefore, we investigated whether the high consumption of sugar-containing carbonated beverages was associated with the prevalence of hyperuricemia among adults in China. Methods and resultsA cross-sectional study was conducted with 25,507 adults (13,013 men and 12,494 women) in Tianjin, China. Sugar-containing carbonated beverages intake was assessed by a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Hyperuricemia was defined as serum uric acid levels ≥7.0 mg/dL in men and ≥ 6 mg/dL in women. The association between carbonated beverages consumption and hyperuricemia was assessed by multiple logistic regression analysis.The prevalence of hyperuricemia in men and women was 23.4% and 8.2%, respectively. After adjustments for potential confounding factors, the odds ratios (95% confidence interval) for hyperuricemia across sugar-containing carbonated beverages consumption were 1.00 (reference) for almost never, 1.18 (1.05, 1.32) for <1–3 cups/week, 1.49 (1.25, 1.77) for ≥4 cups/week in men (P for trend < 0.005) and 1.11 (0.91, 1.34) for <1–3 cups/week (P for trend = 0.27), 1.70 (1.23, 2.31) for ≥4 cups/week in women (P for trend < 0.001), respectively. ConclusionsThis cross-sectional survey demonstrated that increased consumption of sugar-containing carbonated beverages is associated with hyperuricemia among adults in China. Restricted sugar-containing carbonated beverages intake might be beneficial to the prevention of hyperuricemia in the general population.

Comparing Hunger and Thirst Perception and Related Biomarker Response After Carbonated Beverage Consumption

Abstract Objectives To determine if there were relationships between biomarkers of thirst, hunger, perceived thirst and perceived hunger in relation to time and carbonated beverage consumption. Methods Participants (males n = 14, females n = 15) aged 23–65, had a BMI &amp;lt; 30 kg/m2, and no reported chronic disease. Participants completed six data collections, arriving four hours fasted and consuming one of six randomized beverages (water, carbonated-no flavor [CNF], carbonated lime flavor [CL], degassed lime flavor [DL], carbonated lime flavor with aspartame [CLS], and degassed lime flavor with aspartame [DLS]). Blood was collected via finger stick at 0 min (baseline), followed by beverage consumption, and again at 10 and 45 min. post consumption. Perceived hunger and thirst were measured by visual analog scale. Acylated ghrelin and copeptin concentrations were assessed by ELISA assay. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was used to determine relationships. A repeated measures ANOVA was used to determine differences in ghrelin response. Results Perceived hunger scores differed by time (P &amp;lt; 0.0001) but not by beverage (P &amp;gt; 0.05) and there was no interaction. However, acylated ghrelin concentration did not differ by beverage or time (P &amp;gt; 0.05). Acylated ghrelin overall was 86.25 ± 92.30 pg/mL (mean ± SD). There was no relationship between perceived hunger and acylated ghrelin concentration at any time point or beverage (P &amp;gt; 0.05). Adjusting for gender or BMI had no impact. Perceived thirst differed by time (P &amp;lt; 0.0001) but not by beverage (P &amp;gt; 0.05). Copeptin concentrations are currently being analyzed via ELISA assay. Preliminary results for copeptin concentrations from participants consuming water and CNF did not differ by beverage or time. The average copeptin concentration measured from participants for these two beverages was 4.5 ± 4.0 ng/mL. After all samples are analyzed for copeptin, correlation will be run to determine if there is any relationship between copeptin, ghrelin, and perceived hunger and thirst. Conclusions Perceived hunger and thirst changed over time, regardless of beverage type. However, biomarker concentrations were not related to those changes. The Impact of Beverage Consumption Habits on Perceived Hunger and Thirst

Abstract Objectives The goals were to 1) determine the change in perceived hunger and perceived thirst when consuming carbonated, flavored, and artificially sweetened beverages and 2) to determine if carbonated beverage consumption habits predict perceived hunger and thirst. Methods Participants (males n = 14 and females n = 15) aged 23–65, BMI &amp;lt; 30 kg/m,2 and not diagnosed with any chronic disease randomly consumed six different beverage treatments (water, carbonated - no flavor [CNF], carbonated - lime flavor [CL], degassed - lime flavor [DL], carbonated - lime flavor with aspartame [CLS], and degassed - lime flavor with aspartame [DLS]) in a single-blinded, cross-over design. Beverage consumption habits of participants were recorded at the first data collection appointment. Participants were asked to eat a breakfast of approximately 400 calories and a subsequent four hour fast on six separate days. A Visual Analog Scale (VAS) was used to measure perceived hunger and thirst at 0 (baseline), followed by beverage consumption, and then measured at 10 and 45 minutes post consumption. ANOVA was used to determine the difference in hunger and thirst perceptions by beverage. Regression determined the influence of beverage consumption habits perceived hunger and thirst at three different time points and the change in perceived hunger and thirst. Results Perceived hunger and thirst significantly changed over time (P &amp;lt; 0.001) but did not differ by beverage (P &amp;gt; 0.05). There was no interaction between time and beverage (P &amp;gt; 0.05). Perceived hunger scores were 48.59 ± 18.37 and 54.89 ± 18.94 (mean ± SD) at baseline (0 min) and 45 min, respectively (P &amp;lt; 0.0001). Perceived thirst scores were 54.00 ± 15.22 at baseline (0 min) and 46.37 ± 17.22 at 45 min (P &amp;lt; 0.0001). Habitual frequency of carbonated beverage consumption did not influence change in perceived thirst, change in perceived hunger, baseline perceived hunger or baseline thirst in the study (P &amp;gt; 0.05). Conclusions Perceived hunger significantly increased from baseline to 45-minutes, while perceived thirst significantly decreased from baseline to 45-min. Habitual frequency of consumption of carbonated beverages may have limited impact on changes in perceived hunger and thirst when consuming various beverages. Carbonating the household diet: a Pakistani tale.

Carbonated beverage consumption is associated with various adverse health conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and CVD. Pakistan has a high burden of these health conditions. At the same time, the carbonated beverage industry is rapidly growing in Pakistan. In this context, we analyse the trends and socioeconomic factors associated with carbonated beverage consumption in Pakistan. We use six waves of the cross-sectional household surveys from 2005-2006 to 2015-2016 to analyse carbonated beverage consumption. We examine the trends in carbonated beverage consumption-prevalence for different economic groups categorised by per capita household consumption quintiles. We estimate the expenditure elasticity of carbonated beverages for these groups using a two-stage budgeting system framework. We also construct concentration curves of carbonated beverage expenditure share to analyse the burden of expenditure across households of different economic status. Pakistan. Nationally representative sample of households in respective survey waves. We find that the wealthier the household, the higher is the prevalence of carbonated beverage consumption, and the prevalence has increased for all household groups over time. From the expenditure elasticity analysis, we observe that carbonated beverages are becoming an essential part of food consumption particularly for wealthier households. And, lastly, poorer households are bearing a larger share of carbonated beverage expenditure in 2014-2016 than that in 2006-2008. Carbonated beverages are becoming an increasingly essential part of household food consumption in Pakistan. Concerns about added sugar intake can prompt consideration of public health approaches to reduce dietary causes of the disease burden in Pakistan.

Associations between cola consumption and bone mineral density in Korean adolescents and young adults: a cross-sectional study using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2008-2011.

The present study aimed to elucidate the relationship between cola consumption and bone mineral density (BMD) in Korean adolescents and young adults. We used data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2008-2011. A total of 2499 adolescents and young adults aged 12-25 years were included. The study participants were classified as cola drinkers and non-cola drinkers according to 24-h dietary recall data. BMD was measured using dual X-ray absorptiometry. In the male population, whole body, whole femur and femoral neck BMD in cola drinkers were lower than that of non-cola drinkers by 4% (95% CI -0⋅071, -0⋅007), 5% (-0⋅092, -0⋅012) and 5% (-0⋅090, -0⋅001), respectively. In both sex groups, cola drinkers had less frequent milk consumption than non-cola drinkers. However, there were no significant differences in cola consumption according to calcium intake in both sexes. In conclusion, cola intake and BMD were inversely associated with Korean male adolescents and young adults. Considering the importance of peak bone mass attainment at adolescents and the increasing trend in carbonated beverage consumption in South Korea, further studies are needed to elucidate the causality between cola intake and lower BMD.

Survey of nocturnal reflux in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease in China.

This multicenter observational study was conducted in 44 hospitals in China from May 2017 to February 2018. Outpatients with nGER were recruited and their relevant data were collected using a questionnaire, including age, gender, body mass index, history of smoking and alcohol consumption, comorbid diseases, lifestyle, self-reported health status, medical history, nGER symptoms and severity, Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, diagnosis and treatment choices. The study was registered on the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (no. ChiCTR1800017525). The study included 4978 individuals, with valid questionnaires collected from 4448 patients (89.4%). The symptoms of heartburn and regurgitation were more severe at night than during the day (P < 0.05). Age and body mass index were positively correlated with reflux severity at night and during the day (P < 0.05). The severity of nGER was positively associated with lifestyle factors such as smoking, a high-fat diet, carbonated beverage consumption, late supper (later than 9 pm), and snoring (all P < 0.05). Night-time heartburn and regurgitation were related with sleep disorder. Lifestyle factors are associated with nGER severity, and nGER affects sleep quality. It will be beneficial to popularize and strengthen the diagnosis and treatment of nGER.

Global Patterns of Adolescent Fruit, Vegetable, Carbonated Soft Drink, and Fast-Food Consumption: A Meta-Analysis of Global School-Based Student Health Surveys.

Adolescence presents an opportunity to influence diet, which impacts present and future health outcomes, yet adolescent diets globally are poorly understood. We generate evidence on adolescent diets globally and explore patterns and trends by subpopulation. We estimated mean frequency of consumption and prevalence of less-than-daily fruit and vegetable consumption, at-least-daily carbonated beverage consumption, and at-least-weekly fast-food consumption among school-going adolescents aged primarily 12 to 17 years from the Global School-based Student Health Surveys in Africa, Asia, Oceania, and Latin America between 2008 and 2015. Random-effects meta-analysis was used to pool estimates globally and by subgroup. On average, adolescents consumed fruit 1.43 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.26-1.60) times per day, vegetables 1.75 (1.58-1.92) times per day, carbonated soft drinks 0.99 (0.77-1.22) times per day, and fast food 1.05 (0.78-1.32) times per week. Overall, 34.5% (95% CI 29.4-39.7) consumed fruit less than once per day, 20.6% (15.8-25.9) consumed vegetables less than once per day, 42.8% (35.2-50.7) drank carbonated soft drinks at least once per day, and 46.1% (38.6-53.7) consumed fast food at least once per week. Mean daily frequency of fruit consumption was particularly low in South and East Asia (1.30 [1.02-1.58]); carbonated soft drink consumption high in Latin America (1.54 [1.31-1.78]), high-income countries (1.66 [1.29-2.03]), and modern food system typologies (1.44 [0.75-2.12]); and mean weekly fast food consumption high in mixed food system typologies (1.29 [0.88-1.71]). School-going adolescents infrequently consume fruits and vegetables and frequently consume carbonated soft drinks, but there is wide variability by subpopulation.

Carbonated beverage consumption is associated with lower C-peptide in adolescents.

Background Too much consumption of carbonated beverages increases the risk of diabetes. Insulin deficiency and the body's decreased sensitivity to insulin cause diabetes. C-peptide can assess a person's own insulin secretion. The decrease of C-peptide is closely related to the occurrence of diabetes and its chronic complications. The present study assessed the effect of carbonated beverages on C-peptide in adolescents and analyzed the correlation between C-peptide and the drinking index (DI). Methods The subjects investigated including 463 adolescents were divided into a carbonated beverages group, a non-carbonated beverages group and a control group. The general demographic characteristics, beverage consumption status, physical activity and family history of hypertension and diabetes were interviewed with a questionnaire designed by us. All the subjects maintained their original lifestyle and received the oral glucose tolerance test. Various biochemical indicators and C-peptides were detected in these three groups. The data were analyzed by statistical analysis, and multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to examine the risk factors related to C-peptide. Results Blood glucose, blood lipid, liver function and renal function had no statistically significant difference among the three groups. C-peptide levels were lower in the carbonated beverages group and the non-carbonated beverages group than in the control group. Compared to the non-carbonated beverages group, there was a significant decrease in C-peptide levels in the carbonated beverages group. Logistic analysis demonstrated that DI was negatively correlated with C-peptide levels when the physical activity was adjusted. The odds ratio (OR) (OR = 2.540, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.121-5.752) value difference was statistically significant at a stratification level of DI ≥ 6. Conclusions The C-peptide of adolescents was affected by the long-term consumption of beverages, and the effect of carbonated beverages was even more obvious. DI ≥ 6 bottle-years was a risk factor for diabetes, and we can constitute prevention and control measures accordingly so as to reduce the incidence of diabetes.

En ratas, el consumo de bebidas negras, normales o light, incrementa el peso corporal y la ansiedad

El consumo de bebidas negras carbonatadas se asocia con obesidad debido a su alta concentración de azúcar. En efecto, la prevalencia de obesidad, sobre todo en niños, va en aumento, por lo que son pertinentes los estudios de factores de riesgo y los programas de prevención. En este sentido, el objetivo de este estudio piloto fue identificar, en un modelo animal, si el consumo de bebidas negras carbonatadas, normales y de dieta o light, afecta el peso y el comportamiento ansioso. Se seleccionaron 15 ratas Wistar macho, divididas en 3 grupos: un primer grupo de control, que bebía agua exclusivamente; un segundo grupo con suministro de agua y bebida negra carbonatada normal; un tercero con agua y bebida negra carbonatada light. Cada dos días se midió el consumo de bebida y alimento y cada semana se pesaron todos los sujetos. Pasadas cuatro semanas, se evaluaron comportamientos relacionados con ansiedad, utilizando el Laberinto en Cruz Elevado. Se encontraron diferencias significativas estadísticamente en el incremento del peso corporal de las ratas que consumieron bebidas negras normales y light, comparadas con el grupo que solo consumió agua. También se observó mayor consumo de las bebidas carbonatadas, si bien el consumo de alimento se mantuvo en proporciones muy similares para todos los grupos. Con respecto al tiempo de permanencia en los brazos cerrados, fue mayor en las ratas que consumieron bebida light comparadas con el grupo de control y, finalmente, ese mismo grupo mostró menor número de inmersiones de la cabeza en el laberinto. En conclusión, este estudio preliminar permite sugerir que el consumo de bebidas negras carbonatadas, normales y light, se asocia con un incremento del peso corporal de los animales y con mayor ansiedad.

Prevalence and Factors Associated with Overweight and Obesity among Adolescents in Schools in Benin in 2016

Introduction Overweight and obesity are considered to be global public health concerns. The objective was to estimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity and the associated factors. Methods This was a cross-sectional study conducted in 2016 and involving 3968 adolescents of 10 to 19 years from 40 secondary schools in Benin. Participants were selected using a 2-level random sampling technique. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire and were analyzed using Epi Info and Stata softwares. Associated factors were investigated by a logistic regression. Results Mean age was 16.54 ± 0.04 years and sex ratio was 1.16. The prevalence of overweight was 8.1% and that of obesity was 1.6%. Associated risk factors were female gender, sedentary lifestyle, consumption of sugary and carbonated beverages. Consumption of fruits and vegetables, regular physical activity, age over than 15 years were protective factors. Conclusion Overweight and obesity among school adolescents are increasing in Benin. The establishment of a school nutrition program and the promotion of regular physical activity should contribute to reducing their prevalence.
