The increasing development of Internet information technology has brought great space and opportunities for the development of e-commerce. The integration between e-commerce platforms such as Tianmao, Jingdong and Taobao and people's daily consumption life is increasing day by day, only up to 2023.The number of people using the Internet for shopping and consumption reached 1.079 billion. Using the Internet to obtain goods or services has become a part of people's daily life. The vigorous development of e-commerce industry, on the one hand, facilitates people's shopping life, on the other hand, also brings many problems. Among them, the legal protection of consumer personal information is particularly prominent. This paper discusses the particularity of personal information of consumers on the platform and the improper use of personal information of consumers on the platform from five parts. The current situation and existing problems of the legal protection of consumer personal information on the platform, and the necessity of the current protection of consumer personal information are discussed. On this basis, it puts forward suggestions for improving the legal protection of consumer personal information on e-commerce platforms in China.

Research on consumers' personal information security and perception based on digital twins and Internet of Things

In order to solve the problem of personal information leakage caused by online shopping, the researchers propose a consumer personal information security and its perception based on digital twin and Internet of things. This paper takes the online shopping process as the main line, obtains the information security problems existing in each link through the analysis of each shopping link. Analyze the interactions and interactions between digital twins and the big data industry supporting them, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and online commerce. The results show that among all respondents, the perception of personal information security in the process of online shopping is “uncertain”, accounting for 40.78%. Secondly, the proportion of “agree” and “fully agree” information security is 38.47% and 9.54% respectively, while the proportion of “completely disagree” personal information security is only 1.47%, which shows that consumers are more confident in personal information security in online shopping, and also reflects consumers' lack of perception of existing threats in online shopping. This shows that a considerable number of consumers believe that the online shopping cart and order information are safe, showing their trust in the online shopping website.

Personal data confidentiality of consumers of the hospitality industry services in the digital age

The issues of information confidentiality and personal data processing are extremely relevant, especially in the age of digitalization. The current state of hospitality industry services consumers perception of the modern offers using Internet technologies is analyzed in the article and the influence of various factors on the decision to provide personal data to obtain a certain level of service is determined. Bypassing confidentiality destabilizes trust between social actors, reinforces feelings of insecurity and threatens social cohesion, which is a prerequisite for the sustainable development of our societies. Legislation as well as technology can protect personal information, but sometimes they are not user-friendly or are insufficient. In online interactions, users disclose information about themselves or others, while expressing concerns about breaches of confidentiality that may arise from self-disclosure practices rather than restricting or blocking their disclosure behavior. Hospitality industry companies typically collect two types of data: subscription data, which includes consumer personal information obtained during registration for a particular service use, and transactional information obtained when a consumer pays for a product or service. A question of consumers’ choice of hospitality institutions arises according to the volume of information confidentiality collected by the institution from the services consumer. A survey of university-age respondents was conducted in order to study the factors influencing decision-making when choosing a place of accommodation and the desire of young people to maintain privacy by confrontation or the desire to share personal data on the Internet. It is found that the majority of respondents either do not worry about the further confidentiality of personal data or consider it less important compared to the possible benefits of using access to the site or mobile applications. It has been proven that in order to improve mutual understanding with clients, companies in the hospitality industry should pay attention to the ethical aspects of the collection and use of personal data of services consumers.

Strategies for managing the privacy landscape

Firms use consumer personal information to improve their products and services. Personal information is open to misuse, however, and when exploited for undesired or unexpected purposes reduces consumer's trust in the firm and their willingness to provide personal information. How should firms manage consumer privacy? We present a framework to help firms identify their privacy impact on consumers and respond appropriately. We argue that firms should consider the full spectrum of entities they interact with and which can exploit consumer personal information, which includes: the political environment (government), the security environment (hackers), the market environment (third party firms), and the social environment (peers). Firms should pursue strategies to maximize the privacy impact consumers derive across these domains, augmenting sources of positive impact and mitigating those that generate negative impact. Successful strategies for managing privacy combine four approaches: balanced cooperation with government, heightened security against hackers, limited disclosure to third party firms, and moderated propagation with peers.

Preference-Based Privacy Markets

In the modern era of the mobile apps (the era of surveillance capitalism - as termed by Shoshana Zuboff) huge quantities of surveillance data about consumers and their activities offer a wave of opportunities for economic and societal value creation. ln-app advertising - a multi-billion dollar industry, is an essential part of the current digital ecosystem driven by free mobile applications, where the ecosystem entities usually comprise consumer apps, their clients (consumers), ad-networks, and advertisers. Sensitive consumer information is often being sold downstream in this ecosystem without the knowledge of consumers, and in many cases to their annoyance. While this practice, in cases, may result in long-term benefits for the consumers, it can result in serious information privacy breaches of very significant impact (e.g., breach of genetic data) in the short term. The question we raise through this paper is: Is it economically feasible to trade consumer personal information with their formal consent (permission) and in return provide them incentives (monetary or otherwise)?. In view of (a) the behavioral assumption that humans are `compromising' beings and have privacy preferences, (b) privacy as a good not having strict boundaries, and (c) the practical inevitability of inappropriate data leakage by data holders downstream in the data-release supply-chain, we propose a design of regulated efficient/bounded inefficient economic mechanisms for oligopoly data trading markets using a novel preference function bidding approach on a simplified sellers-broker market. Our methodology preserves the heterogeneous privacy preservation constraints (at a grouped consumer, i.e., app, level) upto certain compromise levels, and at the same time satisfies information demand (via the broker) of agencies (e.g., advertising organizations) that collect client data for the purpose of targeted behavioral advertising.

Communal Acts of IoT Consumers: A Potential Threat to Security and Privacy

Consumer Electronics Internet of Things (CEIoT) products, implemented with improper security measures and inadequate privacy-preserving mechanisms, let the hackers or intruders to access and misuse consumer's personal information. In this paper, we present a framework and perspective to study and address Internet of Things (IoT) consumer's security and privacy violation from seemingly five different angles; borrow, rent, gift, resale, and retire. In the act of borrow, an IoT consumer takes and uses another consumer's CEIoT products with the intention of return after usage. In the act of rent, a consumer offers his CEIoT products to other people for temporary usage and charges regular payment for the service. In the act of gift, a consumer willingly gives or presents his used CEIoT products to his friends or relatives without payment. In the act of resale, IoT consumers sell their previously bought or used CEIoT products. In the act of retire, IoT consumers dispose of or throw their used CEIoT products when they become out of service or after the end of product's life. This act could raise serious privacy concerns, since “IoT waste” may become an attractive gateway for cybercriminals to access private information. Moreover, we also present challenges with the above-mentioned five acts of security and privacy violation. And finally, we suggest some recommendations to preserve the security and privacy of IoT consumers.

Research on information security and privacy protection model based on consumer behavior in big data environment

SummaryIn the big data era, information security is becoming more and more important. The recent scandal of the data privacy on Facebook sounded the warning bell for us. Based on the utility theory, this paper proposes that the disclosure behavior of consumer personal information is mainly influenced by two factors, which are perceived risk and perceived benefit, respectively. When consumers make decisions, they weigh the risks and benefits. If the income is greater than the risk, the consumer is willing to provide the information on the website and vice versa. This paper analyzes the serious threats to the safety and privacy of commercial big data and proposes a multi‐level security protection theoretical model for business information security and privacy protection from the perspective of business big data security. The security functions and core technologies of each layer are described in detail, which provide a useful and in‐depth theoretical exploration for practical engineering. Finally, based on the privacy protection of large data and the principle of RBAC, a model of user privacy information security system is proposed.

Research on consumers’ protection in advantageous operation of big data brokers

In the era of big data, the scale and market power of internet brokers companies have gotten the significant improvement. After accepting the information display, comparative evaluation and consumption recommendation in shopping, dining, tourism and other fields provided by big data brokers, consumers fully felt the qualitative leap in the efficiency of consumption behavior under the digital economy. But at the same time, when faced with the dominance of big data brokers, the traditional weak consumers do not really improve the ability of informed and rational decision-making. On the contrary, there is the possibility that big data brokers mislead the consumers and exploit the interests of consumers, and the overall market competition order also have the great risk of being destroyed by the anti-competitive behaviors of big data brokers. Regulators and legislators should begin to develop consumer protection strategies against the strong growth for big data brokers. That is, to establish a balance mechanism of consumer personal information control and data disclosure; to full play the regulatory role of competition policy; to build a legal system of big data regulation. These strategies together achieve the strict supervision to big data brokers, and to complete the legal protection of consumer welfare.

To Share and Protect: Using Regulatory Focus Theory to Examine the Privacy Paradox of Consumers' Social Media Engagement and Online Privacy Protection Behaviors

Consumers' personal information often informs retailers' marketing efforts in terms of creating value in the online marketplace. This study examines four factors related to consumers' social media engagement and online privacy protection behaviors. Regulatory focus, social exchange, and marketing relationship theories explain the online consumer personal information share-and-protect model developed. Consumers aged 18–64years across the United States participated in this survey research. The results suggest that while personal privacy violation experience and perceived secondary control of one's personal information are influential antecedents, privacy concerns and trust in social media websites mediate each of these respectively. The findings suggest that promotion- and prevention-related behaviors regarding personal information align with the orientation of the antecedents, indicating that regulatory focus theory shows promise for examining the privacy paradox. We conclude by developing a matrix that integrates regulatory focus and social exchange theories to guide future research.

The Quality of Online Privacy Policies

Privacy concerns and practices, especially those dealing with the acquisition and use of consumer personal information by corporations, are at the forefront of business and social issues associated with the information age. This research examines the privacy policies of large U.S. companies to assess the substance and quality of their stated information practices. Six factors are identified that indicate the extent to which a firm is dependent upon consumer personal information, and therefore more likely to develop high quality privacy statements. The study’s findings provide practical and theoretical implications for information privacy issues, particularly for consumers who need to determine whether or not to disclose their personal identifying information to firms. The results illustrate the complexity involved in managing personal private information.

Compliance to the fair information practices: How are the Fortune 500 handling online privacy disclosures?

Privacy concerns and practices, especially those dealing with the acquisition and use of consumer personal information, are at the forefront of global business and social issues associated with the information age. Our research examined the privacy policies of the Fortune 500 to assess the substance and content of their stated information practices and the degree to which they adhered to the fair information practices (FIP). From the observations, we developed a Privacy Policy Assessment Matrix that can be used to evaluate how well a firm addresses information privacy concerns. The matrix was used to analyze the Fortune 500 firms to understand their privacy maturity. The results provided practical and theoretical implications for addressing information privacy issues.
