A Content Review and Impact Analysis of Housing and Society through 40 Years

The journal of the Housing Education and Research Association, Housing and Society, reached its 40th year of publication in 2013. This article analyzes the content of the journal over those years and the use of the journal by other authors. The majority of the articles published in Housing and Society has focused on housing issues related to elderly persons and residential satisfaction. Ten housing scholars are represented as authors in 26% of the articles. Based on Google Scholar, researchers have cited articles in Housing and Society increasingly since its inception. In addition to Housing and Society itself, the journal articles that have cited a Housing and Society article most frequently were in the Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal and the Journal of Housing for the Elderly.

The Critical Importance of Understanding Cultural Diversity from a Global Perspective for Family and Consumer Sciences Research and Practice

As the demographics of the United States and the rest of the world shift and global processes grow in importance, it is critical to examine the impact of these issues in the family and consumer sciences (FCS) and related fields. This special issue of the Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal focuses on cultural diversity from a global perspective. It highlights the importance of understanding worldwide social trends and the new opportunities and challenges that are emerging in an increasingly interrelated world. This issue also serves as a platform for an interdisciplinary exploration of the intersection of FCS‐related fields and the social transformation in which we find ourselves. It aims to generate a discussion on how the interface between FCS research and global phenomena is applied to practice with the intent of preparing professionals for an increasingly diverse world.

Cues to Quality in Quantitative Research Papers

In this paper I propose three criteria by which quantitative research manuscripts may be judged: Contribution, Clarity, and Citizenship. A manuscript's scientific contribution is the most critical criterion to consider when assessing its value. Structural clarity refers to the extent to which the manuscript follows journal article reporting standards, whereas content clarity refers to how the research is conveyed in both text and tabular form. Citizenship is evidenced by cues that the study was ethically conducted, honestly reported, and described with enough detail that others may replicate or extend the research. Reading a well-conceptualized and skillfully presented quantitative research article ranks as one of the professional activities that I enjoy most. The primary reason I enjoy reading quantitative research is that despite claims to the con- trary, numbers do not speak for themselves. Rather, through the process of operationalizing concepts so they are measurable, developing hypotheses under the guidance of an appropriate theory, then careful, ethical interpretation and reporting of the resulting analyses, researchers breathe life into the numbers that reflect the actual social, economic, psychological, and other concepts of interest. When this process is executed well, a quantitative research paper offers meaning beyond the otherwise lifeless numbers. But how does one know whether a quantitative research manuscript is con- ceptualized well, skillfully presented, and responsibly completed? For this, we necessarily turn to the experience and judgment of experts in our fields. In the same way that experience and judgment is exercised by the jeweler charged with assessing the quality of a diamond according to its cut, color, carats, and clarity, or the loan officer tasked with assessing a loan applicant's capacity, character, and collateral, Family & Consumer Sciences Research Journal (FCSRJ) reviewers and editors assess the quality of each manuscript submitted for pub- lication. Of course, whether assessing diamonds, loans, or research, there are cues that signal the level of quality. With due apologies for forcing a 3-Cs anal- ogy even further, I have categorized those cues to quantitative research quality as: Contribution, Clarity, and Citizenship.

Analysis of 25 Years of Technology Research as Reported in Two Professional Journals: Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences and Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal

During the past 25 years, the evaluation and exploration of technological advances within family and consumer sciences (FCS) have played a vital role in the evolution of the discipline. The goal of this investigation was to provide an historical perspective of the reporting of technology or technological innovations within the field of FCS. Titles of articles published in the Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences and the Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal as well as theses and dissertations completed as listed in the Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal were examined from 1982 to 2007. Items were included in this analysis if technology or technological content was included in the title. This study provides an analysis of various areas of interest, including geographic location of the author, FCS area, and individual focus or topic of the article, theses, or dissertation.

2006 Thesis and Dissertations Report: Family and Consumer Sciences

Twenty‐five universities reported their graduate students in Family and Consumer Sciences wrote 221 thesis and 79 dissertations in 2006. Students in nutrition completed 93 theses. Thirteen dissertations were from the fields of family relations and institution hotel and restaurant management, and 12 dissertations came from the field of nutrition. Because degree completion with a graduate project is not reported in the Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal, this research productivity report accounts for a small fraction of graduate degrees granted in 2006.

Exploring Theories of Human Behavior in Housing Research

The purpose of this study was to review theories used in housing research over the time period from 1989 through 1999. Articles published in Housing and Society, Environment and Behavior, and Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal were examined. Of the 115 articles identified, 73% cited theory. Thirty-four theories were reviewed in this research. Theory plays an essential role in housing research as it guides the development of research questions, selection of methodologies, and interpretation of results. Most importantly, the utilization of theory is necessary for the advancement of knowledge in housing.

Research Trends in Textiles and Clothing: An Analysis of Three Journals, 1980–1999

The purpose of this research was to assess trends in research, research strategies, data analysis techniques, funding sources, affiliations, and the use of theoretical frameworks in textiles and clothing research. Empirical research focused on textiles and clothing and published in three home economics–related journals—Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, Family and Consumer Science Research Journal, and Clothing and Textiles Research Journal—from 1980 to 1999 was content analyzed (N = 586). Although survey methodology and experimentation were the first and second most‐used research strategies in all but one 5‐year period from 1980 to 1999, fieldwork has increased. Data analysis techniques were primarily quantitative, with increases in the use of some advanced statistical techniques. However, the qualitative treatment of data also increased. Suggestions for graduate education and faculty development are offered.

Consumer Sciences Research: A Two‐Decade Comparison, 1980s and 1990s

A comparison and assessment of research published in the 1980s and 1990s in the areas of consumer economics, consumption economics, family economics, household management, and family financial planning and counseling was performed. Four journals were selected for this study: Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal, The Journal of Consumer Affairs, Journal of Consumer Studies and Home Economics, and Journal of Family and Economic Issues. The following pieces of information were extracted from each article and transferred into table form: area of specialization, institutional affiliation of the researcher(s), source of data, sample size, topical classification, research methodology, and statistical analysis. The use of the tables should help to accelerate the work of educators, current and future researchers, and undergraduate and graduate students interested in locating an example of a particular area, topic, methodology, or statistical analysis.
