This paper critically examines the extent to which historical definitions and conceptualizations of the traditional company-assigned expatriate construct remains meaningful in the context of today’s corporate expatriation landscape for global and multinational corporations (MNCs) and the assignees they employ. A key goal is to achieve construct clarity about the meanings of expatriate through construct development and new theorizing about the corporate, managerial expatriate concept. In doing so, the aim is to generate a new definition of corporate, managerial expatriates that extends existing conceptualisations beyond PCN/TCN vs HCN, and CAE vs SIE, paradigms, to include a range of new types of assignees. This paper takes the first step towards new theorizing about expatriates, using propositions to demonstrate salience of the conceptualization to global staffing in MNCs, A key contribution is clarification of the corporate, managerial expatriation construct so as to diminish conceptual confusion and construct ambiguity about corporate expatriation.
