Archaeological Traces of Pre-industrial and Industrial Dyeing Workshops in the Czech Republic

ABSTRACT Archaeological research into industrial heritage is a relatively recent field of study in the Czech Republic. During the past six years, several historical textile production facilities (including five dyeing workshops) have been uncovered as part of preparatory work for construction projects in areas traditionally associated with the textile industry. Following excavations, these facilities have been the subject of interdisciplinary research. This article presents a comprehensive account of its findings. The introductory part traces the historical development of the textile industry in what is now the Czech Republic. The article then presents the results of research carried out at sites in Brno, Úštěk and Krnov, documenting the possibilities of rescue archaeology and non-destructive surveys as well as tracing this type of workshop’s heating units evolution, providing a comprehensive overview of industrial dyeing in the territory of the present-day Czech Republic during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Tectonic and Glaciotectonic Deformations in the Areas of Polish Lignite Deposits

Abstract This study addresses the complex geology caused mainly by tectonic and glaciotectonic processes in lignite-bearing areas of Poland. Tectonics played a dominant role in the deformation of peat/lignite seams during their deposition. This is especially true for deep grabens where the thickest lignite seams were deposited (e.g., Bełchatów). Conversely, glaciotectonics led to the post-depositional deformation of other deposits (e.g., Sieniawa). The effects of tectonic and glaciotectonic processes in this region are investigated using both simplified geological cross-sections and photography. The size, depth and architecture of the glaciotectonic structures verified in this study demonstrate the importance of their consideration during the exploration and exploitation stages of such lignite deposits, as well as the planning of construction projects in areas strongly transformed by glaciotectonics.

Electrical resistivity imaging survey to detect uncharted mine galleries in the mining district of Linares, Jaén, Spain

The scarcity of information about the existence of old mining shafts and galleries in urban areas is an important issue for future urban development. Electrical resistivity tomography is a non-destructive geophysical technique that can detect and characterize such subsurface cavities based on differences in the behaviour of electrical current in the void and in the embedding rock. Here we present a study in which this technique was used to determine the location of old engineered structures around the city of Linares, southern Spain, and to relate these structures to the abandoned deep mines present in the area. Eight electrical resistivity imaging profiles were performed, with a total of 22 808 measurements. Correlations between geoelectrical anomalies allow detection of the depth and the direction of several galleries, as well as the voids that result from mining extraction. Given the depth at which these structures are located (in some cases less than 5 m), they pose an important risk for future construction projects in areas of urban expansion. This technique is shown to be a useful tool for locating areas that pose important urban risks and, by extension, for the decision-making process in territorial planning, especially in areas with a history of deep mining.
