Construction process monitoring of a large-span steel truss roof based on response-increment comparison strategy

Abstract Large-span spatial structures, with good appearance and plasticity are mostly used nowadays in urban landmarks. During the construction process, the loads are accumulated along with the construction conditions and the responses vary from the construction paths. Hence, a safety evaluation or monitoring of the construction process appears significant. During monitoring, the installation moment of strain gauges is not always the ideally non-loading status, the absolute or real strains in the structural components are difficult to acquire. Furthermore, the displacement monitoring for all key points reduces the construction efficiency. Herein, a response-increment real-time comparison strategy of stresses and unloading point displacements within numerical analysis is announced to avoid the above shortcomings. Based on a real large-span truss structure located in China, four construction schemes are proposed and investigated by simulation method. With the proposed construction scheme and monitoring strategy, a stress and displacement monitoring for the large-span truss structure was conducted. Through the comparison between the monitoring and simulation data, the proposed strategy is verified feasible for the construction monitoring, the efficiency is accelerated and the safety is guaranteed.

Nexus between Building Information Modeling and Internet of Things in the Construction Industries

The process of integrating building information modeling (BIM) and Internet of Things (IoT)-based data sources is a recent development. As a generalization, BIM and IoT data provide complementary perspectives on the project that complement each other’s constraints. Applying the concept of BIM-IoT in the construction industries which has been termed to have a high-risk factor could offer an improvement in the overall performance of the construction industries and thereby reduce the associated risks. This study aims to examine the potential of integrating BIM-IoTs in the construction industries by examining related published literature. Literature analysis revealed that the BIM and IoT have been extensively applied individually to several aspects of construction projects such as construction safety risk assessment, construction conflict management, building construction sustainability, and onsite construction process monitoring. However, there is scanty research awareness on the possibilities of BIM-IoT integration in the construction industries.

Load testing and health monitoring of monolithic bridges with innovative reinforcement

PurposeThe paper aims to investigate effectiveness of the strengthening method, the construction process monitoring, fielding-load tests before and after strengthening, and health monitoring after reinforcement were carried out. The results of concrete strain and deflection show that the flexural strength and stiffness of the strengthened beam are improved.Design/methodology/approachThis paper describes prestressed steel strand as a way to strengthen a 25-year-old continuous rigid frame bridge. High strength, low relaxation steel strand with high tensile strain and good corrosion resistance were used in this reinforcement. The construction process for strengthening with prestressed steel strand and steel plate was described. Ultimate bearing capacity of the bridge after strengthening was discussed based on finite element model.FindingsThe cumulative upward deflection of the second span the third span was 39.7 mm, which is basically consistent with the theoretical value, and the measured value is smaller than the theoretical value. The deflection value of the second span during data acquisition was −20 mm–10 mm, which does not exceed the maximum deflection value of live load, and the deflection of the bridge is in a safe state during normal use. Thus, this strengthened way with prestressed steel wire rope is feasible and effective.Originality/valueThis paper describes prestressed steel strand as a way to strengthen a 25-year-old continuous rigid frame bridge. Research on innovative reinforcement of prestressed T-beam bridge

PurposeIn order to understand the status of the bridge reinforcement process, the construction process monitoring of the reinforced bridge is carried out. The T-beam bridge was tested using the truck loading test. The displacements and concrete strains of the bridge at mid-span were measured during the test.Design/methodology/approachThis paper describes an innovative technique, external prestressing, used to strengthen a 36-year-old prestressed T-beam bridge. This paper introduces the construction process of the prestressed reinforcement method, and makes a theoretical analysis of the reinforced bridge through the establishment of the reinforcement model.FindingsThis study showed that the structural capacity and performance of the bridge were enhanced with externally prestressed steel strand strengthening.Originality/valueThe innovative reinforcement method of prestressed T-shaped bridge is put forward, which has guiding significance for similar bridge reinforcement and maintenance.

Construction Process Monitoring of CCTV Main Building Structure in China

The main building of CCTV (China Central Television) new site project consists of two leaning towers, which are linked together at the top via a large cantilever link element. During construction of the tower, it has the particularity in deformation of the structure and stress state of components, consequently, the safety control of the structure in the construction process is very important. The monitoring techniques and results are introduced, including the foundation settlement, the main structure stress, the structure deformation, and the cantilever deformation. The applications of monitoring and simulation analysis technologies in the construction process provide data support and guarantee the construction safety of the CCTV main building.

A Smart Shoe for building a real-time 3D map

Three dimensional (3D) mapping of environments has gained tremendous attention, from academic to industry to military, owing to the ever increasing needs of environmental modeling as well as monitoring. While many highly effective techniques have been reported thus far, a few even turned into commercial products, none has explored the use of wearable sensors to capture human foot motion, gait, and phase for 3D map construction, especially in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) domain. In this work, we propose a smart (and wearable) shoe, called “Smart Shoe”, which integrates multiple laser scanners and an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to build a 3D map of environments in real time. Such a Smart Shoe can be a potential tool for floor plan surveying, construction process monitoring, planning renovations, space usage planning, managing building maintenance and other tasks in the AEC domain. Besides, this Smart Shoe could assist disabled people (blind people) to navigate and avoid obstacles in the unknown environment. In another case, the shoes may help firefighters quickly model and recognize objects in the firing, dark, and smoky buildings where traditional camera-based approaches might not be applicable. We integrate this shoe with a novel foot localization algorithm that produces a smooth and accurate pose and trajectory of human walking, which is the key enabling technique to minimize data registration errors from laser point cloud.

Retraction Notice: Using BIM to Improve the Design and Construction of Bridge Projects: A Case Study of a Long-Span Steel-Box Arch Bridge Project

More and more mega-complex bridge projects are being or will be built worldwide. At the same time, the design and construction of such projects involve more and more challenges, e.g., complex structural designs, complicated construction environments, etc. This research study aims to apply BIM (Building Information Modelling) to bridge projects to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of design and construction. Through the analysis of the characteristics of bridge projects and relevant, associated problems, a BIM-based solution to improving design and construction is developed, including conceptual design optimization, detailed design optimization, the optimization of construction sequences, construction scheduling, construction management, and construction process monitoring. Furthermore, a real-life bridge project is presented to demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the BIM-aided approach to design and construction. It is shown that BIM has the potential to improve the design and construction of bridge projects. It is expected that this research could contribute to the extensive application of BIM in mega-complex bridge projects to aid in design and construction in the future.
