Analysis of Urban Thermal Environment Improved by Blue-Green Spaces on the Landsat Data: A Case Study on Tianjin

China’s urbanization is characterized by rapid speed, large scale and high energy consumption, which causes a series of ecological problems. Among these problems, urban thermal environment is particularly prominent, and the most intuitive reflection is the heat island effect. It is of great significance to optimize the urban layout to give full play to the cooling effect of blue-green spaces for improving urban thermal environment. Compared with other methods, it is more extensive and feasible. However, the current research on urban thermal environment mostly focuses on revealing the driving effects of different land use, and lacks of in-depth discussions on blue-green spaces. Tianjin is located in the northeast of the North China Plain, and has a typical warm temperate sub-humid monsoon climate. This paper takes the six districts of Tianjin City as the research area, covering Heping District, Nankai District, Hongqiao District, Hebei District, Hexi District and Hedong District, with a total area of about 181.18 square kilometers. The typical climate and urbanization characteristics of Tianjin can provide reference for cities with the same characteristics. Firstly, this paper had adopted the Landsat changing scenario of the city gained during the periods of 2004, 2011 and 2017 to formulate the land surface temperature by Mono-window Algorithm, and divided the results into seven temperature zones by standard deviation classification method. In regard to blue-green spaces, this paper had identified Landsat satellite data by Maximum Likelihood Classifier, and classified land use into three categories: blue spaces, green spaces, and non-blue and green spaces. And, next, this paper had studied the correlation between the landscape pattern of blue-green spaces and urban thermal environment by Landscape Pattern Analysis, and used Moving-window Analysis to compare the relationship between thermal environment and blue-green spaces at different spatial scales. And so the research results prove that, the high-temperature regions of Tianjin has been expanding along with the expansion and agglomeration of the urban areas and across the river space restrictions, while the low-temperature regions of the city are mainly concentrated in the blue-green spaces, during the periods of 2004, 2011 and 2017. Furthermore, in the landscape pattern level, there is a significant negative correlation between patch perimeter index of blue-green spaces and land surface temperature, and a significant positive correlation between patch perimeter area ratio index of blue-green spaces and land surface temperature. In the multi-scale spatial pattern, the correlation between the Percent of Landscape of blue spaces patches and land surface temperature is the highest in the 1500 meters × 1500 meters sample, and the Percent of Landscape of green spaces patches and land surface temperature is the highest in the 300 meters × 300 meters sample. In addition, the improvement efficiency of thermal environment in blue spaces is higher. In the end, the optimization suggestions of adjusting the layout of blue-green spaces to effectively improve the urban thermal environment problem are proposed. By optimizing the blue-green space landscape patterns at the optimal scale, increasing the blue spaces in the northern high temperature range, widening and transforming the existing waterways, constructing riverside greenways and other strategies to effectively deal with the thermal environmental problems, improving the ecology and livability of the city. It is hoped to provide new ideas and references for the construction of ecological and livable city under the background of rapid urbanization. In the research process, due to the limitation of data sources, calculation methods and other factors, the relevant conclusion is still limited at the spatial scale. In the future research, the thermal environment and the pattern of blue-green spatial landscape at the fine scale will be studied.

Information consumption city and carbon emission efficiency: Evidence from China's quasi-natural experiment

The transformation of public consumption patterns has become a burning question, but there are few studies on public consumption patterns. Therefore, evaluating the impact of Information consumption city (ICC) policy on carbon emission efficiency holds significant implications. This study settles on 104 pilot cities in China from 2006 to 2020 to assess the impact and the response mechanism of ICC policy on carbon emission efficiency through the time-vary Difference-in-Difference (DID) model. The result shows that: (1) ICC policy significantly promotes the local carbon emission efficiency, which remains robust after a battery of sensitivity tests. (2) It improves carbon emission efficiency through production factors agglomeration effect, industrial structural changing effect, innovation promotion effect, and environmental attention effect; (3) The direct impact of ICC policy on carbon emission efficiency varies across regions with different information consumption and carbon emission base. (4) ICC can improve carbon emission efficiency through the joint implementation of smart city (SC), new urbanization (NU), ecological civilization city construction (EC), Belt and Road Initiative (BR), Broadband China (BC), low-carbon city pilot policy (LCC), and air quality standards (AQS) policy.

Spatio-Temporal Pattern of Urban Green Space in Chengdu Urban Center under Rapid Urbanization: From the Policy-Oriented Perspective

Urban green space (UGS) is increasingly recognized as a nature-based solution to achieving urban sustainable development. Under rapid urbanization, greening policies are often the main driving factor behind the restoration or even growth of UGS. In this study, Chengdu, the pioneering “park city” in China, is chosen as a representative region. Based on land use/land cover (LULC) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data, indicators that can reflect both UGS quantity and quality are constructed and the spatio-temporal characteristics of UGS in original and expanding urban areas are also explored at different greening policy stages. The findings show that, from 2000 to 2022, the basic trend of UGS reduction during urbanization remained unchanged, despite the greening policies implemented in Chengdu. However, the original urban area has evolved into a new urban area. This has been achieved by integrating the expanded urban area with higher greening rates, resulting in the greening rate in 2022 (44.61%) being restored to the 2000 level (44.21%). The implementation of green policies in Chengdu is primarily reflected in improved UGS quality, especially in the stage of the ecological garden city construction (2008–2018). Specifically, the UGS quality in the original urban area has been improved by 25.25%. Overall, the UGS quality in Chengdu Urban Center has improved, changing from a medium level in 2000 to a medium-high level in 2022. The construction of a national demonstration zone of the park city provides an opportunity for the UGS quantity to increase and quality to improve in Chengdu in the future. However, effectively considering the development positioning of the Tianfu Granary to coordinate the relationship between UGS and high-quality farmland is a huge challenge for urban sustainable development in Chengdu.

Ecological City Planning and Construction Research

In the process of modern urbanization, the construction of ecological city has become an inevitable trend. With the improvement of economic level, people are increasingly demanding a higher quality of life. Cities are the broadest living space for human beings and the foothold for improving the quality of life. The planning and construction of eco-cities satisfy the harmonious relationship between cities and ecological environment, which is of great significance for the sustainable development of urbanization and conforms to the urbanization requirements of harmonious coexistence between human and nature. There have been a lot of researches on eco-city, mainly involving the path exploration of eco-city construction, the practice situation, and the research related to different factors. At present, the construction of eco-city is in the initial stage of exploration, and still faces some development problems. This paper summarizes the connotation of eco-city, analyzes the problems existing in the current stage of eco-city construction, and puts forward some solutions to these obstacles, aiming at promoting the steady development of eco-city construction.

Research on Street Landscape Design Along Urban Rail Transit Lines

The study on the landscape design of urban streets along the rail transit lines is an important topic in urban planning and development. With the acceleration of urbanization, the construction and improvement of urban rail transit systems have become a top priority. However, there are numerous challenges and issues in the landscape design of streets along rail transit lines. In recent years, governments and relevant departments have actively promoted the construction of urban green streets and integrated ecological concepts into landscape design to address the pressures and challenges brought about by urbanization. Drawing on the experiences of ecological city construction, the establishment of urban green streets has become an effective approach to solving the functional and environmental problems of urban streets. By integrating green infrastructure into street design, it is possible to effectively manage stormwater and improve the street environment. Research indicates that the root cause of urban street flooding lies in the increase of impervious surface area, which alters the surface hydrological conditions and impedes the collection and utilization of rainwater. Therefore, the design of urban green streets should focus on functional zoning, awareness of stormwater management, and integration of urban cultural landscapes. Through the application of these design methods, not only can the existing problems of urban streets be solved, but valuable design experience and guidance can also be provided for future urban green street construction.

Design and spatial pattern optimization for a sponge city using factor analysis and geographical statistics to restore urban resilience: A case study in a coastal area of China

Abstract The sponge city is a new concept of stormwater management for ecological city construction, which aims to restore water-cycle processes and reduce runoff. Cities in coastal districts are suffering from serious instability due to high population density, urbanization, and land-use changes. However, previous research contains few evaluations of balancing urban ecological indicators of sponge city performance, including geographical, environmental, economic, and social factors, and their effect on resilience at a macro level to develop low-impact development schemes. In this study, we developed an integrated framework using factor analysis, geographical statistics, multi-objective analysis, and remote sensing methods to extract the factors influencing sponge city resilience and to establish spatial pattern schemes. The results indicated that the urbanization degree and plant adaptability had the greatest impact on sponge city performance, with weights of 45 and 27%, respectively. Sponge city spatial pattern schemes performed the best in the combination scenario of 14.8–46.8% green roofs (by area ratio) supported by grooves and rain barrels +10% herbaceous basins divided into units by ecological tree pools +10% permeable pavements and sidewalks. This scenario balanced facilities and cost to optimize the spatial pattern, which improved sponge city adaptability and urban ecological conditions.

Growth Simulations of Urban Underground Space with Ecological Constraints Using a Patch-Based Cellular Automaton

The growth simulation of urban underground space (UUS) under the consideration of ecological constraints can effectively reveal the characteristics and trends of UUS changes, and provide a basis for planning the construction of sustainable and livable ecological cities. Therefore, this study considers urban ecological space as a constraint mechanism for UUS development and conducts a simulation study of the dynamic and complex UUS growth process, with a view toward guiding UUS planning under a long-term overall vision. In this study, a patch-based cellular automaton (CA) model is constructed to simulate the dynamic and complex growth process of UUS, subject to the ecological constraints generated by the agent-based land allocation optimization model. The spatial drivers of UUS growth simulation are determined based on the Random Forest (RF) algorithm. The results of the research case in Tianfu New District, Chengdu City, demonstrate that UUS expansion with ecological constraints exhibits sustainable characteristics. However, the growth rate of the UUS development scale is significantly lower when ecological constraints are present compared to when they are not. This study’s results contribute to urban management by finding a balance between UUS development and ecological space conservation, and providing theoretical support for rational UUS planning and decision making in the construction of low-carbon cities.

Analysis of Land Engineering Strategies for Urban Land Ecological Renovation

With the acceleration of urban ecological civilization construction, the demand for ecological land in urban construction is increasing day by day. Currently, land improvement projects often aim to minimize project costs and maximize land use, neglecting the ecological carrying capacity of the site. In the construction of urban ecological space land improvement projects in China, there are phenomena such as excessive emphasis on aesthetics and visual effects, blind introduction of foreign species, unreasonable plant configuration, and large-scale use of lawns, which have also caused many problems in the construction of urban ecological civilization. Land is the foundation of urban construction and sustainable development, and making land clean, healthy, and safe is a prerequisite for the construction of ecological cities. Government departments need to use ecological concepts as work guidance to continuously improve the effectiveness of land resource remediation and maximize the efficiency of land use. Land engineering technology plays an important role in the ecological remediation of urban land. We need to keep up with the pace of development of the times, apply various advanced technologies, and effectively address various problems, in order to achieve better results. This article conducts research on land ecological remediation and proposes optimization strategies for land ecological remediation.

Strategies for Green Space Management in Mountain Cities Based on the Habitat Suitability for Urban Birds Breeding

The reproduction suitability of urban birds reflects the health status and service level of urban ecosystems. Therefore, studying the relationship between the nest density of urban birds and environmental factors has certain reference significance for guiding green space management. In this study, 67 green spaces of Liupanshui city in the Wumeng Mountain Area were selected as study sites. Through the statistics of the number of bird’s nests in the plots in 2020, a stepwise regression analysis was conducted on 10 environment-influencing factors. The results show that the nest density of birds in urban green space is not significantly correlated with the plot size, noise, light pollution, vegetation diversity, proportion of paved land, proportion of native plants, or distance from water body, but is significantly correlated with the canopy coverage of arbor, spatial openness, and distance from non-artificial environment to plot. The research identified the environmental factors affecting nest density, and frames a method to compare the density of bird’s nests in urban green space. Based on this, strategies for the construction and management of green space are put forward, so as to provide reference for ecological city construction and alleviate the correlation between the expansion of urban construction land and the deterioration of bird habitats.

Sequencing the carbon emission cycle of green buildings in China based on an ecological city perspective

As people's basic material living standards continue to rise, the demand for a better living environment and a better life is becoming increasingly strong. Since the 18th and 19th National Congresses of the Party proposed to carry out ecological civilization construction and build a beautiful China, carrying out ecological city construction has become one of the effective ways to solve the current urban development problems. In this paper, we summarise the latest research on green building assessment systems, life-cycle carbon emissions and life-cycle costs of buildings. We find that China's green building assessment system still has many shortcomings compared to the world's advanced green building assessment systems. Based on this, we have conducted a sequencing analysis of the life cycle carbon emissions of green buildings in China, so that buildings can meet the green building rating and at the same time achieve energy and carbon savings. The results of the study show that the building use phase has the highest carbon emissions in the building life cycle, accounting for 77% of the life cycle carbon emissions.

Research on the renewal and renovation of Rabbit Mountain Site Park oriented by the construction of green blocks

ABSTRACT Through the review studies of ecological city construction and green neighbourhood development at home and abroad, green neighbourhood construction has become an important bridge between ecological cities and green buildings, but in China, there are fewer research results for green neighbourhood construction in urban renewal. Therefore, this study selects the national cultural heritage protection unit Rabbit Hill Heritage Park as the research scope, takes the traditional neighbourhood as the research object, and establishes a research framework for quantitative analysis of green neighbourhoods by combining the 2018 Green Urban Area Evaluation Criteria. Using the spatial analysis methods such as the spatial syntax software DEPTHMAP and ARCGIS, quantitative analysis is carried out for the current space from five levels: site layout, green transportation, green space system, public space, and disaster prevention system, and the optimization strategy for green neighbourhood renovation is proposed based on the quantitative analysis results to make up for the lack of existing green neighbourhood research results and provide data support for the smooth implementation of green neighbourhood renewal and renovation. It has certain innovative value and strong practical significance.

Chengde City in the Perspective of Sustainable Economic Development Eco-city construction study

Eco-city construction is an overview of the coordinated development of human social development and ecological environment, and sustainable development under the carrying capacity of the natural environment. Both natural, historical and socio-economic conditions are very limited for Chengde, and its economy has always been closed and semi-closed. Economic development is largely dependent on natural conditions and resources, which, together with a weaker socio-economic development base, has led to economic development lagging behind other surrounding areas. And the contradiction between economic development and resources and environment is becoming more and more prominent, which seriously limits the good economic and social development in Chengde. This paper studies the ecological city construction in Chengde from the aspect of sustainable economic development, and elaborates and analyzes the problems in the construction of ecological civilization in Chengde from the aspects of the regional overview of Chengde, the preliminary achievements of ecological civilization construction in Chengde, the index system of ecological civilization construction, and the influence of human production activities on ecological construction, and proposes specific measures to respect the laws of nature, enhance environmental protection awareness, develop green It also proposes specific measures to promote the construction of ecological civilization, such as respecting the laws of nature, enhancing environmental protection awareness, developing green economy and strengthening environmental law enforcement.

Ecological Compensation in Zhijiang City Based on Ecosystem Service Value and Ecological Risk

Using Zhijiang City, Hubei Province as an example, this study constructed an ecological risk assessment model based on land use data from the three phases of 2000, 2010, and 2020. We then determined the ecological compensation priority sequence based on the ecosystem services value (ESV) and the economic status of the research area. The findings revealed that there was a significant spatial differentiation in ESV during the study period, with the ESV being higher south of the Yangtze River than north. Overall, in Zhijiang City, the ESV generally decreased over the course of the study period, with a decrease of CNY 812 million in 20 years. The loss of wetland and grassland was the greatest, and was most obvious between 2010 and 2020, whereas the loss of construction land was the lowest among the different types of landscapes. The ecological risk index of Zhijiang City showed a declining trend between 2000 and 2020. The extent of high-ecological risk areas shrank by 55.83 km2, and their predominant landscape types were grassland and forest land. The low-ecological risk area expanded by 340.50 km2 and was primarily distributed in construction land along the Yangtze River Basin. The ecological compensation priority sequence was divided into five levels in each town in Zhijiang City, with Gujiadian Town and Baiyang Town receiving the highest grades and being designated as priority compensation areas. The study intends to serve as a model for the construction of ecological cities, ecological environmental protection, and sustainable development in the Yangtze River Basin.

Research on the Path of Ecological Economy Promoting Urban Development Taking Kunming as an Example

At the 15th Summit of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, President Xi Jinping solemnly announced that China will continue to promote the construction of ecological civilization. Based on the guiding ideology of biodiversity conservation and urban ecological economic construction, this paper takes Kunming City as an example to analyze the practical significance of biodiversity to urban ecological economic construction. At the same time, combined with field research and reference to Chinese and foreign research literature, this paper analyzes the current situation and current development problems of Kunming's ecological city construction from the perspective of water ecology and urban ecological construction, with a view to putting forward new ideas and methods for urban ecological economic construction in the new era and helping the sustainable development of green cities.

Has China’s Pilot Policy of Water Ecological Civilization City Construction Reduced Water Pollution Intensity?

To address the deterioration of the water ecological environment, China’s Ministry of Water Resources launched 105 pilot projects for the construction of water ecological civilized cities in two batches in 2013 and 2014. Based on panel data of 283 cities in China from 2008 to 2020, in this study, we investigate the impact of the pilot policy of water ecological civilization city construction on water pollution intensity using the difference-in-differences method. We found that water pollution intensity in the sample period exhibited a downward trend, decreasing most rapidly during the pilot construction period. Controlling for urbanization level, technological innovation, import and export trade, and foreign investment, our study results show that the pilot policy significantly reduced water pollution intensity. Mechanism analysis shows that the reduction effect was achieved through the channels of optimizing industrial structure, increasing sewage treatment, promoting water recycling, promoting technological progress, and speeding up water price reform. The results of this study also show that the policy effect in terms of reducing water pollution intensity is heterogenous across time, in addition to exhibiting regional heterogeneity owing to differences in levels of economic development, water resource endowment, and environmental regulation intensity. The research results also provide a reference for other countries similar to China to reduce water pollution intensity, address the deterioration of the water ecological environment, and improve the water ecological environment in the process of economic development.

Study on evaluation and construction of ecological livable cities in western underdeveloped areas—Take Guiyang as an example

<p>Building a sustainable, ecological, and livable city is the inevitable choice of current urban development. The evaluation of ecologically livable cities plays an important role in guiding the construction direction and development trend of ecologically livable cities. From the aspects of economic development, infrastructure, ecological environment, and social people’s livelihood, build an urban ecological livable evaluation index system, use the entropy weight method to determine the index weight, and use the matter-element analysis method to build an evaluation model to evaluate the construction of ecological livable cities in Guiyang City, Guizhou Province, from 2005 to 2015. Research shows: that from 2005 to 2015, the level of ecological livability in Guiyang increased significantly, realizing the development transformation from “not livable” to “ideal livable”, but the level of “ideal livable” was unstable in 2015. The key factors restricting the construction of an ecologically livable city in Guiyang are the insufficient area of urban roads, the low comprehensive utilization rate of industrial solid waste, and the insufficient investment in the transformation and protection of the ecological environment. The matter-element model can not only obtain the comprehensive quality information of the research object but also reveal the differentiation information of individual indicators, which is suitable for the evaluation of ecologically livable cities.</p>

Evaluation of Livability of Wuhan under Ecological Construction and Analysis of Its Spatial Pattern

With the continuous development of ecological city construction under the concept of “ecological civilization”, the creation of ecologically livable cities has become more and more important. Since urban livability involves a wide range of social life, the establishment of urban livability index evaluation system can help analyze urban livability and residents’ quality of life, and then optimize and control urban spatial structure to promote high-quality urban development. This study takes Wuhan, Hubei Province, as an example, and establishes a comprehensive index evaluation system based on 12 indicators in three criteria levels: economic, social, and environmental, and calculates a comprehensive score of urban livability for each district in Wuhan City, and conducts a comprehensive evaluation of the 13 administrative districts under Wuhan City. Based on the final scores, we analyze the livability and friendliness of each district in Wuhan, analyze the spatial pattern of the results, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the livability of each district in Wuhan, make scientific reference suggestions to promote the coordinated development of each district, guide the rational allocation of resources, and provide a reference for decision-making to promote the livable communities in each district in Wuhan.

Research on Urban Landscaping Management and Its Sustainable Development

With the advancement of ecological civilization construction, the increasing deterioration of the natural environment brought about by the rapid development of social economy has gradually been widely paid attention to by people. Urban landscaping management and protection work is one of the effective ways to promote the construction of ecological city and improve the quality of life of residents, and is the perfect combination of the natural environment and aesthetic appreciation that we rely on in space. This paper expounds the contents, importance and existing problems of urban landscaping management and protection work, puts forward the measures to strengthen urban landscaping management and protection work, and further discusses the sustainable development direction of urban garden management and protection, in order to contribute to the improvement of urban ecological environment.

Sustainable Development of Eco-Cities: A Bibliometric Review

With the increase in the urban population, nearly 70% of future people will live in cities, which will not only bring massive consumption of resources but also cause irreversible damage to the urban ecological environment. Therefore, the study of sustainable development of eco-cities (SDEC) has received wide attention from academics. In this paper, a bibliometric analysis of journal articles on sustainable development of ecological cities using the Web of Science Core Collection database from 1990 to 2021 is conducted to analyze the current status, hotspots, and research trends in this field. The results of this study reveal the evolution of the number of publications, major research disciplines, authors, countries, and institutions in this research field over the last three decades. Regarding research hotspots, SDEC research has focused on cleaner production, sustainable buildings, municipal solid waste management, energy policy, and carbon emissions in China. With the emergence of climate change, carbon emission limitation, and sustainable development requirements, scholars’ research targeting performance analysis and whole life cycle assessment of urban ecosystems will gradually become a mainstream trend. In the future, technological innovation still needs to be strengthened, and we should enhance the research on stakeholders in ecological city construction and study the impact of urban ecological transformation on social, economic, and environmental changes.

The Spatial Pattern Strategy of Urban Ecological Patches Based on the Mesoscale WRF-UCM Model: Taking Wuhan City as an Example

In the context of rapid urbanization, the reduction of urban ecological land area, space chaos, and fragmentation have led to a series of climate and environmental problems. This paper takes the ecological patches of the urban climate environment compensation space as the research object and establishes several urban canopy models of several cases based on geographic information data. Then, we input them into the mesoscale WRF-UCM model and simulate after loading the meteorological data to derive the meteorological indicators of each case, quantitatively analyze the meteorological conditions in the ecological patch boundaries with different surface attributes, and conduct research on the “quality-efficiency” correspondence of the physical characteristics of the ecological patches and the spillover effects of climate regulation. Studies have shown that the highest surface temperature difference between water patches and patches with other attributes ∆ Tsk is up to 6.5°C in winter and 11.5°C in summer. The highest temperature difference at a somatosensory height of 2 meters ∆ T 2 is up to 2.0°C in winter and 3.0°C in summer, which can improve the surrounding environment. Under light wind conditions, water patches will have a positive spillover effect within 5.5 km of the downwind direction. Based on the data, an optimization strategy for the spatial pattern of urban ecological patches is proposed: the best distribution of water patches that are beneficial to the climate adjustment of Wuhan in winter and summer is in the north or northeast of the city, followed by the south or southwest. The north and northeast of the city should keep the woodland patches and reduce the setting of vegetation/arable land and wetland patches. This research is an interdisciplinary study of urban spatial planning that adapts to climate change, to supplement the deficiencies of urban planning theory, and to provide guidance for the promotion of green and ecological city construction.
