FACTORS AFFECTING COMPETITIVENESS IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY: A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW

In today's globalized and highly competitive construction industry, it is crucial for companies to have a deep understanding of competitiveness in order to survive. The competitiveness of the construction industry is influenced by a multitude of factors. As a result, construction organizations must improve their understanding of the relationships between these various factors that affect competitiveness. Thus, this paper aims to determine the factors affecting competitiveness in the construction industry through an analysis of relevant literature focusing on aspects that shape competitiveness in the construction industry. This systematic review explores these factors by analyzing 27 peer-reviewed English-language articles from 2003-2023. It found that the major factors affecting competitiveness are mainly under eight main themes: technological, organizational, human resource, and strategic factors, economic and political factors, financial factors, operational factors, and external factors. The review emphasizes the growing importance of digital technologies in the construction industry's competitiveness and provides guidance for future studies.

Building data driven culture for digital competitiveness in construction industry: a theoretical exploration

Despite studies related to big data in construction is growing, most of them have focused more on data application and less on the social element of the big data technology (e.g. data culture). This study aims to explore the key elements of data culture practices, towards providing a deeper insight into how they could drive digital competitiveness in the industry. A total of 136 papers related to big data in construction published in peer-reviewed journals were reviewed and analysed using the well-established systematic literature review (SLR) methodology. The findings indicate that four key drivers of data: data analytics, data literacy, data democratization and data leadership are critical for an organization’s competitiveness in a digital environment. A framework for data driven culture is proposed consisting of five elements: culture of production, culture of use, cultivation of data, datafication and data infrastructure. As cultural shifts are complicated endeavors, exploring the key elements on what it takes to drive the data culture in construction is necessary for the development of an effective digital ecosystem of the organization. This study extends the digital literature in the construction context by providing deeper insights into the conceptualization of data driven culture.

The relationship between social responsibility fulfilment and industry competitiveness: Empirical evidence from construction industry in China.

Social responsibility fulfilment is an important part of the operation management (OM) and competitiveness of the construction industry (CIC). This study investigates the mechanisms through which social responsibility fulfilment in the construction industry affects industry competitiveness and the mediating role of industry operations management. From the intra-organizational stakeholder perspective, social responsibility fulfilment (SR) is divided into two dimensions: shareholder-dimensional (SH) and employee-dimensional social responsibility fulfilment (EM). By analysing a panel of the construction industry in 12 provinces of China from 2015 to 2020, an inverted U-shaped relationship between social responsibility fulfilment and construction industry competitiveness and between shareholder-dimensional social responsibility fulfilment and construction industry competitiveness was found, while a U-shaped relationship between employee-dimensional social responsibility fulfilment and construction industry competitiveness was found. Furthermore, social responsibility fulfilment and shareholder-dimensional social responsibility fulfilment had significant effects on operation management. Additionally, the study concludes that operation management is positively related to construction industry competitiveness and plays a partially mediating role between social responsibility fulfilment and construction industry competitiveness. The findings enrich the theoretical basis of the relationship between social responsibility fulfilment and competitiveness and demonstrates important management significance for the construction industry in managing its social responsibility behaviour and improving industry competitiveness, thus promoting high-quality development of the construction industry.

SIMURG: A new model for the integrated assessment of sustainability

Sustainability assessment is one of the basic issues in the agenda of public authorities and it requires practical tools to measure performance in terms of sustainable development goals. Most studies in literature deal with only one dimension of the problem of environmental components of sustainability. These studies discuss entities at only one level (cities, buildings, etc.), and one layer (green, smart, etc.) in selected dimensions. The literature includes no models that claim to provide an integrated assessment of entities’ performance in the 3D Cartesian system. The presently available models do not offer solutions that would be applicable in practice. SIMURG (A performance-based and Sustainability-Oriented Integration Model Using Relational database architecture to increase Global competitiveness of construction industry) proposes using layers and their KPI sets in the assessment process. In addition to philosophical, organisational, integrational, and computational models, this study aims to develop a lean architecture of a relational database model by eliminating ineffective solutions in the practical dimension, i.e. in the computer model. The model can be used by individuals to help them choose built environment whose characteristics match their expectations. Public authorities can utilise the model to increase the level of accountability, transparency, and legitimacy in their decision-making processes.

EVALUATION OF THE MARKETING ENVIRONMENT THREATS OF BUILDING ENTERPRISES IN CONDITIONS OF CLIENT-ORIENTED MANAGEMENT IMPLEMENTATION

The subject matter of the article is an assessment of the threats of the marketing environment in the condition of a client-oriented approach to the management of enterprises in the construction industry implementation. The goal is to substantiate the scientific and methodical approach for the implementing a client-oriented approach to the management of enterprises in the construction industry, taking into account the assessment of the threats to the marketing environment. Objectives: the components of the marketing environment are investigated, its threats are systematized taking into account the peculiarities of the functioning of the construction industry enterprises. The state and trends of the construction industry development at the macro and micro levels are analyzed. The state of housing construction in Ukraine is analyzed in comparison with the state of the housing stock of the country as a whole. The relevance of the implementation of a client-oriented approach to the management of corporate enterprises in the construction industry is substantiated. Methods: abstract-logical analysis, theoretical generalization, system and statistical analysis, expert evaluations. The following results are obtained. The classification of threats to the marketing environment of corporate enterprises in the construction industry is carried out. The methodical approach to the evaluation of the effectiveness of the client-oriented management system for the seven components is developed, namely the compliance of the product with the customer’s expectations; level of accomplishment of the adjoining territory; degree of satisfaction of clients with quality of construction works and materials; the degree of satisfaction of the clients with the comfort of the house; customer service level; level of awareness of the client about the activities of the company; competitive advantages and reputation of the company. Conclusions. The tendencies of development of the enterprises of the building industry of Ukraine during 2013-2017 are analyzed. Competitiveness of construction industry enterprises depends to a large extent on both the efficiency of management and the risk factors at both macro and micro levels, which determines the expediency of finding ways to attract a sufficient number of consumers, in order to strengthen the competitive advantages of the industry. It is proved that the main parameters of the competitiveness of construction industry enterprises are the level of quality of construction works, the price, additional services for consumers, which can form additional utility and strengthen the position of the company on the market and which are the basis for the formation of values in the system of client-oriented management. The segmentation of the construction real estate market is proposed and the approaches to customer retention within the framework of the system of cyber-oriented management are highlighted. On the basis of an expert survey, a methodical approach to assessing the effectiveness of client-oriented management in the corporate security system of the construction industry enterprises is developed.

Innovative Organization of Project Activity of Construction Students

The construction industry competitiveness depends on its equipping with information modeling technologies. This requires training and development of human resources. The advantages of BIM-technologies are considered. The requirements for the specialists capable of promoting information modeling technologies in the construction industry are discussed. For a wide application of BIM-technologies, the problem of training personnel with a new thinking must be solved. When preparing graduates of the major “Construction”, it is necessary to introduce innovative educational technologies aimed at building the students’ ability for team work, competences in the field of modern information and communication technologies, as well as design skills basing on spatial modeling. Graphic training is the first discipline of the professional orientation for construction students. In the context of training it is important to create such learning environment that is close to a professional one. The paper provides the examples of practice-oriented assignments based on the project method in the course of students’ independent work.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) Use in Turkish Construction Industry

Changing of business conditions due to globalization, improved technology, transformed demands, needs of customers and etc. gives a rise to increase a competition in construction industry. In this context, in order to survive and sustain in the long term, construction companies should progress in the field of technology and innovation. Thus, innovation approaches such as information technology (IT) used in construction is one of the most essential in terms of competitiveness for the construction industry's success. Among IT tools such as designing and structural analyses programs (CAD, Revit, SAP2000), enterprise resource planning (ERP) and data management programs; the BIM technologies became a major shift for the construction industry in order to organize the reciprocal interdependencies between different stakeholders considering the increasing complexity of construction projects in design, bidding, construction and maintenance processes also with additional benefits on change control, decrease in repetition, energy efficiency, health and safety, risk and quality management. Taken into consideration of the worldwide rising importance of the BIM technologies, Turkish construction companies should tend towards the BIM use in order to increase their global competitiveness and to provide the sustainability of Turkish construction industry's performance. In this context, the main aim of this study is to diagnose Turkish construction industry to develop a clear understanding of the BIM adoption, to investigate challenges and benefits of the BIM applications in Turkish construction companies and to provide recommendations for the Turkish construction industry about the BIM implementation.

Indonesian construction consulting services are facing a complex problem in fulfilling the nation's expectations regarding high quality infrastructure development and the construction industry's competitiveness. A study of this problem and a formulation of solutions to improve the situation are presented in this paper. A survey was carried out in Jakarta, West Java, East Java, and North Sumatra provinces to collect data related to this problem. A focus group discussion and a workshop with all stakeholders were conducted to formulate improvement actions that need to be taken. It was revealed that the problems faced include, among others, the limited number of professional engineers compared to the number of national consultancy companies, the uneven distribution of engineers in Indonesian regions, an imperfect procurement system, and low-quality work output in general. Recommended actions include improvement of the government's role in consulting services nurturing and facilitation, development of partnerships, and amelioration of the professional engineer and consultant certification system.

Analysis on the Competitiveness Strength of Yunnan Province in Construction Industry Based on the Model of Improved TOPSIS

Not only the construction industry as a pillar industry of the national economy, it is a major contributor to the regional economy. Identification of competitive strengths and weaknesses of the Yunnan Province in the western region, the article is based on the improved TOPSIS to analyze. A variety of factors can have an effect on regional construction industry. By combining researches of other scholars and considering of the meaning of construction industry indicator and possibility of data acquisition and analyzing the statistic data of recent three years, is built an evaluation system which contains 5 elements. By some higher mathematics solving method calculates the weight in approach of ranking and comparing competitiveness of the 12 provinces in western region such as Yunnan, Sichuan and Chongqing identifies the regional competitiveness. The consequence shows that the construction industry competitiveness of Yunnan province is at mid-low level among 12 western provinces, but enjoys a good development potential.

Research into the dynamic development trend of the competitiveness of China’s regional construction industry

The Communist Party of China proposed the concept of “speeding up the industrial transformation and changing economic development mode” in its 17th Congress. Against this background, it is of more practical significance to analyze problems existing in the development of China’s regional construction industry and to make specific development strategies. Traditional researches into the industrial competitiveness mainly focus on the static analysis of several regions during the same period. However, the formation of industrial competitiveness is essentially a dynamic process. To evaluate the industrial competitiveness objectively and comprehensively, we comb relevant literatures about the competitiveness of the construction industry, and construct an evaluation indicator system of the competitiveness of China’s regional construction industry. Subsequently, we use PLS path model to evaluate the competitiveness of China’s construction industry from 2005 to 2008. Later we depict the dynamic development process of the competitiveness of construction industry, analyze advantages and disadvantages, and provide some suggestions. It can be concluded that 8 provinces have significantly improved their competitiveness, the competitiveness of 11 provinces have declined, and the remaining 10 provinces have remained constant. This research has achieved a theoretical and method innovation in the evaluation of industrial competitiveness from the time dimension.

해외건설 경쟁력 평가모델 개발에 관한 연구

본 연구의 목적은 글로벌 건설시장에서의 각 국가 기업들의 경쟁력을 비교할 수 있는 해외건설 경쟁력 지표의 수립과 평가에 관한 연구로써 매년 발표되는 Global-Insight, ENR, 통계청 등의 통계데이터를 기반으로 각 국가별 건설인프라 경쟁력과 기업별 건설역량지표를 토대로 해외건설 경쟁력을 평가하였다. 국가별 건설인프라 경쟁력 평가 결과 평가대상 22개 국가 중 미국 1위, 중국 2위, 일본 3위, 한국은 11위를 차지하였으며 국가별 건설기업 역량평가 결과 미국 1위, 이탈리아 2위, 중국 3위, 한국은 12위를 차지하였다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 2개의 지표에 가중치를 적용하여 국가별 글로벌 건설 경쟁력을 종합적으로 평가한 결과 평가대상 22개 국가 중 미국 1위, 중국 2위, 이탈리아 3위, 영국4위, 독일 5위로 나타났고, 한국은 9위를 차지하였다. 한국은 국가별 건설인프라 경쟁력(11위) 측면이 국가별 건설기업 역량평가(12위) 보다 약간 상위에 있는 것으로 도출되었으며, 특히 한국은 시장안정성(17위)과 설계경쟁력(19위) 측면에서 하위권으로 이 부분에 대한 개선노력이 필요한 것으로 분석되었다. The purpose of this study is to determine a national construction industry's competitiveness and establish strategies to expand into overseas construction markets. To evaluate the international competitiveness of overseas construction businesses, this study were selected as the target range of international comparisons among the countries cited by ENR, Global-Insight, IMF, OECD, and Transparency International. In result the United States ranked first, followed by China <TEX>$2^{nd}$</TEX>, Italy<TEX>$3^{rd}$</TEX>, U.K.<TEX>$4^{th}$</TEX>, and Germany <TEX>$5^{th}$</TEX>, while Korea ranked <TEX>$9^{th}$</TEX> overall. In particular, Korea's competitiveness in the construction infrastructures by country ranking(<TEX>$11^{th}$</TEX>) was higher than the competency assessment results of construction companies by country, therein ranking <TEX>$12^{th}$</TEX>. In addition, while Korea ranks <TEX>$12^{th}$</TEX> among 22 countries, <TEX>$3^{rd}$</TEX> in price competitiveness, <TEX>$12^{th}$</TEX> in construction competitiveness, and <TEX>$19^{th}$</TEX> in design competitiveness.

The Status and Improvement Scheme of Educational Program for Specialty Contractors' Employees

전문건설업체의 관리자 및 기술자의 역량에 따라 건설산업 경쟁력과 관련된 기능공 및 임시 근로자의 노동생산성이 좌우된다. 그러므로 건설산업 경쟁력을 향상하기 위해서는 교육 프로그램을 통한 전문건설업체 관리자 및 기술자의 역량강화가 절실히 요구된다. 그러나 전문건설업체의 관리자 및 기술자 교육에 관한 연구는 한정적이거나 수행된 바 없는 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구는 전문건설업체 종사자 대상 교육의 현황과 문제점을 파악하고, 개선방안의 일환으로 수요자 맞춤형 교육 프로그램 개발방향을 마련하기 위해 수행되었다. 이를 위해 교육 프로그램에 관한 광범위한 문헌검토가 이루어졌으며, 현행 전문건설업체 종사자의 교육 현황과 문제점, 그리고 요구사항을 파악하기 위해 설문조사를 실시하였다. 문헌 및 설문조사 결과를 바탕으로 전문건설업체 종사자 맞춤형 교육 프로그램의 개발방향을 교육내용, 방법 및 형태, 시간으로 구분하여 제안하였다. Specialty contractors are in charge of the actual construction work and managing many work force in construction sites. The effective educational program for specialty contractors' employees is essential to improve the competitiveness of construction industry. However, there is no in-depth research on training programs for their management or technical staff. Therefore, this study proposes a framework of educational program for the specialty contractors' employees in order to enhance their competence. An extended review of literature related the educational program was carried out to understand the concept, structure, and element of the education system. A questionnaire survey for specialty contractors' employees was performed to investigate the status and problems of educational programs as well as the their educational needs. Based on the survey, the demand-oriented education programs is required to meet the needs of specialty contractors' employees. The framework of demand-oriented education programs for specialty contractors' employees consists of training contents, training type and method, training hour.

Factors Formulating the Competitiveness of the Chinese Construction Industry: Empirical Investigation

The competitiveness of the construction industry is significantly affected by various factors, such as abundant manpower, integrated performance of supporting industries, and government support. The construction industry in developing countries is less competitive than its counterparts in the international construction market, and causes of this situation are multifaceted. Nation-related characteristics should be taken into account to produce competitive strategies for a specific construction industry, and this also leads to the situation that factors differ between countries, especially between developing and developed countries. Porter’s diamond model is adopted to develop potential factors formulating the competitiveness of the construction industry, and 34 factors are identified within the Chinese constriction industry (CCI). In order to get empirical findings, a questionnaire survey is managed to investigate the significance of these factors, and factor analysis is also applied. Factor analysis further reveals six underlying factors: stable home market (F-I), supply chain management (F-II), corporate management practices (F-III), qualified professionals (F-IV), satisfactory business environment (F-V), and migrant workers (F-VI). The study provides insights in finding key areas that formulate the competitiveness of the CCI, as well as valuable implications for other countries. These research results provide some practical implications for practiced professionals and policy-makers to emphasize these critical aspects that determine the competitiveness of the industry, e.g., creating a dynamic and advanced domestic market. However, as the market context and institutional environment vary significantly among different countries, similar studies in different construction industries would enrich the understanding of the competitiveness of the construction industry generally.

Research on Shanghai Districts’ Construction Industry Competitiveness

Shanghai districts’ construction industry competitiveness is evaluated and ranked, based on factor analysis, cluster analysis, neural network and the construction industry statistics of Shanghai statistics yearbook in 2007-2011. The evaluation shows that, there is imbalance in the 18 Shanghai districts’ industry scale and output efficiency competitiveness. And the industry in Pudong New Area is far more competitive than the rest of the various districts and counties, which just fits Chinese macroeconomic policies. New countermeasures and suggestions would be established in terms of the characteristics of each district which had been found.

Use of Design/Build in E/C Industry

The concept of design/build was investigated as part of a research project that studied the drivers and trends that will affect U.S. engineering and construction industry competitiveness in the next decade. The research results were presented as the keynote address at the Design/Build America conference in Washington, D.C., in March of 1994, sponsored by the Design/Build Institute. This paper summarizes the keynote presentation and provides additional information on the use of design/build in the future. The paper discusses several different issues that emerged from the research effort on the further implementation of design/build processes by U.S. engineering and construction (E/C) firms. The areas presented include the influence of design/build on the E/C industry; potential changes in the E/C industry for firms, clients, contracting strategies, and projects; the focus of clients which leads to design/build; advantages and disadvantages to owners of the design/build approach, types of clients who use design/build projects; strategies for design/build firms to remain competitive; new firm configurations; factors required for the success of projects; and marketing strategies for design/build firms.

Forces Driving Competition in the E&amp;C Industry in the 1980s and Competitive Transitions in the 1990s

This article discusses 1) the driving forces and trends that transpired during the 1980s to help shape future competitiveness and 2) the issues and forces in occurring the 1990s that will affect future competition. Historical trends were analyzed to identify those elements within engineering and construction (E&C) that influence competition. Engineering and construction industry competitiveness was investigated by conducting an extensive literature review and intensive interviews with 58 E&C industry executives. The areas investigated included the threat of new entrants into the global marketplace, the threat of substitute products and services, the rivalries among existing competitors, changes in the industry structure in the 1980s, and the competitive nature of E&C industry in the 1990s.
