Exact quantisation of U(1)3 quantum gravity via exponentiation of the hypersurface deformation algebroid

Abstract The U(1)3 model for 3+1 Euclidian signature general relativity (GR) is an interacting, generally covariant field theory with two physical polarisations that shares many features of Lorentzian GR. In particular, it displays a non-trivial realisation of the hypersurface deformation algebroid with non-trivial, i.e. phase space dependent structure functions rather than structure constants. In this paper we show that the model admits an exact quantisation. The quantisation rests on the observation that for this model and in the chosen representation of the canonical commutation relations the density unity hypersurface algebra can be exponentiated on non-degenerate states. These are states that represent a non-degenerate quantum metric and from a classical perspective are the relevant states on which the hypersurface algebra is representable. The representation of the algebra is exact, with no ambiguities involved and anomaly free. The quantum constraints can be exactly solved using groupoid averaging and the solutions admit a Hilbert space structure that agrees with the quantisation of a recently found reduced phase space formulation. Using the also recently found covariant action for that model, we start a path integral or spin foam formulation which, due to the Abelian character of the gauge group, is much simpler than for Lorentzian signature GR and provides an ideal testing ground for general spin foam models. The solution of U(1)3 quantum gravity communicated in this paper motivates an entirely new approach to the implementation of the Hamiltonian constraint in quantum gravity.

An inner product for 4D quantum gravity and the Chern–Simons–Kodama state

We demonstrate that reality conditions for the Ashtekar connection imply a non-trivial measure for the inner product of gravitational states in the polarization where the Ashtekar connection is diagonal, and we express the measure as the determinant of a certain first-order differential operator. This result opens the possibility to perform a non-perturbative analysis of the quantum gravity scalar product. In this polarization, the Chern–Simons–Kodama state, which solves the constraints of quantum gravity for a certain factor ordering, and which has de Sitter space as a semiclassical limit, is perturbatively non-normalizable with respect to the naïve inner product. Our work reopens the question of whether this state might be normalizable when the correct non-perturbative inner product and choice of integration contour are taken into account. As a first step, we perform a semi-classical treatment of the measure by evaluating it on the round three-sphere, viewed as a closed spatial slice of de Sitter. The result is a simple, albeit divergent, infinite product that might serve as a regulator for a more complete treatment of the problem. Additionally, our results suggest deep connections between the problem of computing the norm of the CSK state in quantum gravity and computing the Chern–Simons partition function for a complex group.

Quantum gravity constraints on scale separation and de Sitter in five dimensions

We give evidence that supersymmetric anti-de Sitter vacua of five-dimensional supergravity cannot be scale separated as a consequence of quantum gravity constraints, such as the weak gravity conjecture or the species scale. We show this in a model-independent way for the minimal and the maximal theory and we believe that the argument can be extended to any amount of preserved supercharges in the between. If combined with previous works stating that non-supersymmetric anti-de Sitter vacua must be unstable, our results suggest that five-dimensional effective field theories in anti-de Sitter belong to the swampland. At the cost of introducing an additional assumption on the gravitino mass, we can extend our analysis to de Sitter vacua as well. However, the few known stable de Sitter vacua of minimal five-dimensional supergravity do not satisfy such an assumption and thus evade our constraints. This suggest that they are on a somehow different footing than their four-dimensional counterparts and therefore deserve further investigation.

Quantum gravity constraints on fine structure constant from GUP in braneworlds

The Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) has been discussed in the thick braneworld scenario. By considering Rydberg atoms in this background, we show that the spacetime geometry affects Maxwell equations inducing an effective dielectric constant on the space. In its turn, the corrected Coulomb potential by the gravitational interaction yields a deviation on the 3-dimensional Bohr radius. Then, we compute the corrections on the fine structure constant owing to the GUP in higher-dimensional spacetime. We also found constraints for the deformation parameter beta and D-dimensional Planck length l_{D} by comparing the predicted deviations with the recent empirical data of the fine structure constant. We compute the intermediate length scale, which in principle may be larger than the Planck length scale. It is conjectured that below such scale Quantum Gravity effects should take place.

Implications of quantum gravity for dark matter in the brane-world scenario

Based on the swampland program establishing the constraints that an effective field theory must satisfy in order to come from quantum gravity, we point to that if this program is true the brane-world scenario with the branon dark matter (DM) would be ruled out without needing the experimental observations. In other words, the constraints of quantum gravity imply that the branons must be absorbed by the Kaluza-Klein (KK) gauge bosons which are the off-diagonal components of the bulk metric to become their longitudinal modes. Interestingly, the KK gauge bosons behave as the DM and hence it leads to a geometric unification of gravity and the DM, as a natural feature of the brane-world scenario completed into quantum gravity in the ultraviolet. In addition, the KK gauge boson DM would open a particularly promising observation window to search for the DM coupling very weakly to the SM in the cosmic microwave background and the spectrum of the primordial gravitational waves.

Mass Hierarchies and Quantum Gravity Constraints in DKMM‐refined KKLT

AbstractWe carefully revisit the mass hierarchies for the KKLT scenario with an uplift term from an anti D3‐brane in a strongly warped throat. First, we derive the bound resulting from what is usually termed “the throat fitting into the bulk” directly from the Klebanov‐Strassler geometry. Generating the small value of the superpotential W0 via the mechanism proposed by Demirtas, Kim, McAllister and Moritz (DKMM), we identify two possible DKMM‐refined KKLT scenarios for stabilizing the light axio‐dilaton modulus. The first scenario spoils the expected hierarchy between the bulk and the throat mass scales and implies that the energy scale of the uplift is larger than the species scale of the effective theory in the throat. Moreover it requires an unnaturally large tadpole that is certainly in conflict with tadpole cancellation. For the less restricted second scenario, the hierarchy can be controlled at the expense of, under the most optimistic assumptions, an only moderately large tadpole .

Flavor symmetries and automatic enhancement in the 6D supergravity swampland

We argue for the quantum-gravitational inconsistency of certain 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ supergravity theories, whose anomaly-free gauge algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and hypermultiplet spectrum $M$ were observed in arxiv:2012.01437 to be realizable only as part of a larger gauge sector $(\mathfrak{g}' \supset \mathfrak{g}, M' \supset M)$ in F-theory. To detach any reference to a string theoretic method of construction, we utilize flavor symmetries to provide compelling reasons why the vast majority of such $(\mathfrak{g},M)$ theories are not compatible with quantum gravity constraints, and how the "automatic enhancement" to $(\mathfrak{g}', M')$ remedies this. In the first class of models, with $\mathfrak{g}' = \mathfrak{g} \oplus \mathfrak{h}$, we show that there exists an unbroken flavor symmetry $\mathfrak{h}$ acting on the matter $M$, which, if ungauged, would violate the No-Global-Symmetries Hypothesis. This argument also applies to 1-form center symmetries, which govern the gauge group topology and massive states in representations different than those of massless states. In a second class, we find that $\mathfrak{g}$ is incompatible with the flavor symmetry of certain BPS strings that must exist by the Completeness Hypothesis.

A Quantum Informational Approach to the Problem of Time

Several novel approaches have been proposed to resolve the problem of time by relating it to change. We argue using quantum information theory that the Hamiltonian constraint in quantum gravity cannot probe change, so it cannot be used to obtain a meaningful notion of time. This is due to the absence of quantum Fisher information with respect to the quantum Hamiltonian of a time-reparametization invariant system. We also observe that the inability of this Hamiltonian to probe change can be related to its inability to discriminate between states of such a system. However, if the time-reparametization symmetry is spontaneously broken due to the formation of quantum cosmological time crystals, these problems can be resolved, and it is possible for time to emerge in quantum gravity.

Reheating after swampland conjecture

The evolution of the universe started from a hot and dense Big Bang point. Temperature fluctuation map of cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation and initial seeds of large scale structures (LSS) are explained by an inflationary period in a very early time. Inflaton as quanta of the inflation field is responsible for the accelerated expansion of the universe. Potentials of the self-interacting single field models are constrained by observational data as well as quantum gravity. Some forms of the potential are rolled out by data of Planck satellite and some of them by quantum gravity constraints. In the standard model of inflation or cold inflation firstly universe expands where the inflaton rolls the nearly flat part of the potential and in the second part, the universe reheats where the inflaton oscillates around the minimum of the potential which leads to thermalized radiation dominated universe. String theory as the best model of quantum gravity forbids the oscillation around the minimum of the potential during the thermalized epoch of the reheating. But in the warm model of inflation thermalization happens during the accelerated expansion of the universe where the inflaton rolls nearly steep potential and the universe will be radiation dominated without any separated reheating epoch.

Putting the boot into the swampland

The swampland program of delineating the space of effective field theories consistent with quantum gravity appears similar to the bootstrap program of delineating the space of quantum field theories consistent with conformal symmetry. With this in mind we rewrite the effective field theory of the Large Volume Scenario in AdS space solely in terms of RAdS, in a form suitable for holographic analysis. This rewritten EFT takes a remarkably universal (and previously unnoticed) form, which is uniquely determined in the large-volume limit up to terms suppressed by mathcal{O} (1/lnRAdS), with no reference to any of the fluxes, brane or instanton configurations that enter the microphysics of moduli stabilisation. The putative dual 3d CFT will have two low-lying single trace scalars, an even-parity scalar Φ dual to the volume modulus with {Delta}_{varPhi }=frac{3}{2}left(1+sqrt{19}right)simeq 8.038 and an odd-parity scalar a dual to the volume axion with Δa = 3. On the AdS side the higher-point interactions are likewise uniquely determined. As the AdS theory is both subject to swampland constraints and holographically related to a CFT, we argue that holography will lead to a ‘bootland’ — a map between swampland constraints on the AdS side and bootstrap constraints on the CFT side. We motivate this with a discussion of swampland quantum gravity constraints on the axion decay constant in the ν → ∞ limit and the 〈ΦΦaa〉 4-point function on the CFT side.

On axionic field ranges, loopholes and the weak gravity conjecture

In this short note we clarify some aspects of the impact that the Weak Gravity Conjecture has on models of (generalized) natural inflation. We address in particular certain technical and conceptual concerns recently raised regarding the stringent constraints and conclusions found in our previous work (arXiv:1503.04783). We also point out the difficulties faced by attempts to evade these constraints. These new considerations improve the understanding of the quantum gravity constraints we found and further support the conclusion that it remains challenging for axions to drive natural inflation.

Quantum gravity constraints from unitarity and analyticity

We derive rigorous bounds on corrections to Einstein gravity using unitarity and analyticity of graviton scattering amplitudes. In $D\geq 4$ spacetime dimensions, these consistency conditions mandate positive coefficients for certain quartic curvature operators. We systematically enumerate all such positivity bounds in $D=4$ and $D=5$ before extending to $D\geq 6$. Afterwards, we derive positivity bounds for supersymmetric operators and verify that all of our constraints are satisfied by weakly-coupled string theories. Among quadratic curvature operators, we find that the Gauss-Bonnet term in $D\geq 5$ is inconsistent unless new degrees of freedom enter at the natural cutoff scale defined by the effective theory. Our bounds apply to perturbative ultraviolet completions of gravity.

Fencing in the swampland: quantum gravity constraints on large field inflation

In this note we show that models of natural inflation based on closed string axions are incompatible with the weak gravity conjecture (WGC). Specifically, we use T- duality in order to map the bounds on the charge-to-mass ratio of particles imposed by the WGC, to constraints on the ratio between instanton actions and axion decay constants. We use this connection to prove that if the WGC holds, even when multiple axions are present and mix with each other, one cannot have large axion decay constants while remaining in a regime of perturbative control. We also discuss the extension of the WGC to discrete symmetries and its possible impact on models with axion monodromy, and the distinction between the strong and mild versions of the WGC. We argue that, if the strong version is violated, the constraints on large field inflation can be evaded while still satisfying the mild one. Finally, we offer some speculations regarding the import of these results to the general theory of inflation.

Quantum gravity constraints on inflation

We study quantum gravity constraints on inflationary model building. Our approach is based on requiring the entropy associated to a given inflationary model to be less than that of the de Sitter entropy. We give two prescriptions for determining the inflationary entropy, based on either `bits per unit area' or entanglement entropy. The existence of transPlanckian flat directions, necessary for large tensor modes in the CMB, correlates with an inflationary entropy greater than that allowed by de Sitter space. Independently these techniques also constrain or exclude de Sitter models with large-rank gauge groups and high UV cutoffs, such as racetrack inflation or the KKLT construction.

PRECURSORS OF SHORT GAMMA-RAY BURSTS

We carried out a systematic search of precursors on the sample of short GRBs observed by Swift. We found that ~8-10% of short GRBs display such early episode of emission. One burst (GRB 090510) shows two precursor events, the former ~13 s and the latter ~0.5 s before the GRB. We did not find any substantial difference between the precursor and the main GRB emission, and between short GRBs with and without precursors. We discuss possible mechanisms to reproduce the observed precursor emission within the scenario of compact object mergers. The implications of our results on quantum gravity constraints are also discussed.

A mesoscopic quantum gravity effect

We explore the symmetry reduced form of a non-perturbative solution to the constraints of quantum gravity corresponding to quantum de Sitter space. The system has a remarkably precise analogy with the non-relativistic formulation of a particle falling in a constant gravitational field that we exploit in our anaylsis. We find that the solution reduces to de Sitter space in the semi-classical limit, but the uniquely quantum features of the solution have peculiar property. Namely, the unambiguous quantum structures are neither of Planck scale nor of cosmological scale. Instead, we find a periodicity in the volume of the universe whose period, using the observed value of the cosmological constant, is on the order of the volume of the proton.

Finite spin-foam-based theory of three- and four-dimensional quantum gravity

Starting from Ooguri's construction for $BF$ theory in three (and four) dimensions, we show how to construct a well defined theory with an infinite number of degrees of freedom. The spin network states that are kept invariant by the evolution operators of the theory are exact solutions of the Hamiltonian constraint of quantum gravity proposed by Thiemann. The resulting theory is the first example of a well defined, finite, consistent, spin-foam based theory in a situation with an infinite number of degrees of freedom. Since it solves the quantum constraints of general relativity it is also a candidate for a theory of quantum gravity. It is likely, however, that the solutions constructed correspond to a spurious sector of solutions of the constraints. The richness of the resulting theory makes it an interesting example to be analyzed by forthcoming techniques that construct the semi-classical limit of spin network quantum gravity.

Quantum Einstein’s equations and constraints algebra

In this paper we shall address this problem: Is quantum gravity constraints algebra closed and what are the quantum Einstein equations. We shall investigate this problem in the de-Broglie--Bohm quantum theory framework. It is shown that the constraint algebra is weakly closed and the quantum Einstein's equations are derived.

Vassiliev invariants: A new framework for quantum gravity

We show that Vassiliev invariants of knots, appropriately generalized to the spin network context, are loop differentiable in spite of being diffeomorphism invariant. This opens the possibility of defining rigorously the constraints of quantum gravity as geometrical operators acting on the space of Vassiliev invariants of spin nets. We show how to explicitly realize the diffeomorphism constraint on this space and present proposals for the construction of Hamiltonian constraints.

Is the third coefficient of the Jones knot polynomial a quantum state of gravity?

Some time ago it was conjectured that the coefficients of an expansion of the Jones polynomial in terms of the cosmological constant could provide an infinite string of knot invariants that are solutions of the vacuum Hamiltonian constraint of quantum gravity in the loop representation. Here we discuss the status of this conjecture at third order in the cosmological constant. The calculation is performed in the extended loop representation, a generalization of the loop representation. It is shown that the Hamiltonian does not annihilate the third coefficient of the Jones polynomial (${\mathit{J}}_{3}$) for general extended loops. For ordinary loops the result acquires an interesting geometric meaning and new possibilities appear for ${\mathit{J}}_{3}$ to represent a quantum state of gravity. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
