THE DIFFERENT USES OF UKEN AND TOA DIALECT ON GAYO LANGUAGE

The differences between the Uken and Toa dialects are easy to identify in the daily conversations of the speakers. Speakers of these two dialects are still easy to understand each other. The differences occur in several vocal sounds, intonation, some vocabulary, as well as some greetings in everyday dialogue. The aim to be achieved in this research is to find out the differences between the Gayo Uken and Toa dialects. The research method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative method. The differences in conversation between the Uken and Toa people can be seen in terms of their pronunciation when interacting. Besides, there are also slight differences in vocabulary between the two dialects. The differences between the two Gayo dialects occur in the vowel phoneme change and consonant one. The variations of the phonemes used in both dialects stay at the same meaning, but they are pronounced differently. As a result, based on the pronunciation of the Uken and Toa dialects spoken by the community, there are many phoneme variations. Every spoken word produces dissimilarities in vowel phonemes and consonant phonemes.

French liaison is allomorphy, not allophony: evidence from lexical statistics

Abstract The exact nature of French liaison as a phonological or morphological alternation is still debated. Under the phonological analysis, liaison is allophony: liaison consonants are special phonemes that alternate between a consonant allophone and zero (e.g., [t] ∼ ∅), the zero allophone being derived from the consonant phoneme through deletion (/t/ → ∅). Under the morphological analysis, liaison is allomorphy: liaison words have two underlyingly listed allomorphs, a consonant-final allomorph and a shorter allomorph that lacks this consonant (e.g., grand ‘great’ /gʁɑ̃t, gʁɑ̃/). This paper uses evidence from lexical statistics to arbitrate between these two analyses. The form without liaison consonant (and with deletion, under the phonological analysis) has been found in previous research to become less likely with increasing lexical frequency. The paper shows that this is problematic for the phonological analysis of French liaison, as deletion typically applies more frequently in high-frequency words across languages. The paper further shows, using evidence from a large lexical database, that words involved in liaison alternations generally have lower type frequency but higher token frequency than non-liaison words when phonotactic and morphological effects on lexical frequency are controlled for. This result is in line with the predictions of the morphological analysis, as allomorphy typically involves a relatively small number of words that occur frequently. Due to its empirical nature, this argument constitutes to date one of the strongest arguments in favor of the morphological analysis.

Evaluating Students' Performance in Consonant Phoneme Identification within Word Structures

The prime objectives of this article are to evaluate the bachelor level first year major English students’ performance in consonant sound identification within word structures, and examine the effectiveness of an intuitive-imitative approach in teaching consonant phonemes of the spellings. To attain these objectives, the researchers employed the one-group pretest posttest research design in which 200 phoneme recognition test items as data collection tools regarding the consonant sounds of English were administered to 30 students at Makawanpur Multiple Campus, Hetauda, Nepal in 2023 before and after teaching them the sounds through the intuitive-imitative approach for 30 teaching periods. Population being low, this study involved the census for collecting data. After observing their performance in consonant phoneme identification, it was found that their performance was bad at identifying the phonemes of the spelling's “g” in “Genre”, “c” in “Cello”, “th” in “Thailand”, etc. Their performance was not so good at identifying the phonemes of the spellings “j” in “Join”, “y” in “Yak”, etc. Their performance was satisfactory in identifying the phonemes of the spelling's “g” in “Gene”, “g” in “Gem”, “n” in “Donkey”, etc. Similarly, they were good at identifying the phonemes of spelling “p” in “Punch”, “b” in “Boat’, “k’ in “Book”, etc. A related samples Wilcoxon signed rank test value (p  .05) implies that there was a significant difference in the median scores of the posttest scores and the pretest scores of the students. It suggests that the intuitive-imitative approach was an effective method of teaching sounds. This article is significant in a phonological process and pronunciation, resulting in phonemic awareness.

Pemerolehan bahasa aspek fonologi pada anak usia 2 Tahun

This study aims to describe language acquisition in children aged 2 years and 2 months in terms of phonological aspects. This research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method. The subject in this study was a child aged 2 years 2 months, male and with the initials MFA. The data in the research are speech produced by children aged 2 years and 2 months. The data collection techniques applied in this research are observation and documentation. The results showed that MFA subjects were able to pronounce vowels in front-high /i/, front-middle /e/, high-back /u/, middle-middle /ǝ/, middle-low /a/ and back-middle /o /, but has difficulty pronouncing vowels such as /u/ and /e/ in word-final position. Regarding consonant phonemes, there are several phonemes that the subject cannot pronounce correctly, such as the consonants /b/, /c/, /h/, /k/, /l/, /p/, /r/, /s/ and /t/ especially in word initial position. Lhowa Phonology: A Typological Perspective

Lhowa exhibits a large inventory of forty-one consonant phonemes. In terms of points of articulation, it contains seven types of consonants, viz., labial, dental, alveolar, retroflex, palatal, velar and glottal. In terms of manner of articulation, it presents seven types of consonants, viz., stops, nasals, affricates, fricatives, trills, laterals and approximants. In terms of voicing, there are two types of consonant phonemes, viz., voiceless and voiced. Lhowa has voiceless unaspirated, voiceless aspirated, voiced murmured and voiceless murmured sounds. It exhibits a distinct consonant distribution. Lhowa has eight basic and two fronted vowels. There are four diphthongs. Lhowa displays a moderately complex syllable structure. It presents a canonical structure of the syllable in which V is obligatory and other constituents, (Ci, initial consonant), (X, voiced palatal approximant), and (Cf, final consonant) are optional. Lhowa permits only five types of syllable patterns. Each syllable is intrinsically high or low. It exhibits simple tone system. The high vs. low tone is distinguished only on the first syllable of a word. In Lhowa, like in Lhasa Tibetan, compound words demonstrate four types of tone melodies, viz., HH, LH, LL and HL.

Language is a human communication system that is used to understand each other with certain goals. This research aims to find out the process of language development in three year old children. The method used in this research is a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The results of the research found that Aqila can now say 2 to 4 words such as drink milk, Dad buy snacks. By using data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews and documentation. The results of interviews with the child's parents and observing directly his language development showed that this child experienced language development according to the level at his age, including the words mother, father, sister, brother, milk, traveling. This research can conclude that Aqila often omits several phonemes or even adds phonemes to her vocabulary. Such as changing the consonant phoneme /k/ to consonant phoneme /t/, and changing the consonant phoneme /l/ to consonant phoneme /r/.

An experimental phonetic analysis of consonant phonemes in English Summary The article deals with the experimental phonetic analysis of consonant phonemes in English. In the article, the obtained acoustic values of consonant phonemes located in different phonetic positions in the word structure were compared and the best phonetic positions where these consonants manifested and better preserved their immanent properties were determined. At the same time, for each phonetic position in the word structure and for each speaker, the practical application of consonants was included in separate tables. In the acoustic analysis of linguistic material, the “Praat” computer program, which is designed for conducting acoustic analyzes of the speech signal was used. The Relationship Between Language and The Creation of Ethnic Identities of Tai Loei in The Northeastern of Thailand

This research paper aims to study the relationship between language and the ethnic identity formation process of Tai Loei people in northeastern Thailand by applying the study of language and identity framework as the key concepts for analysing the language data of Tai Loei people used in daily communication and the Tai Loei language data contained in written documents. The study results showed that 1) the characteristics of the sound of Loei ethnic groups have syllable structures as follows: (1) CVT, 2) CVCT, 3) CV:T, 4) CV:CT, 5) CVVT, 6) CVVCT, and 7) CCV:CT.The phonemes of Tai Loei appear in 3 phonemes, which are consonant phonemes, vowel phonemes, and tone phonemes. However, the researcher found that the end of the word, according to Thai grammar, is an adverb such as “Na,” while Tai Loei uses the words “Ko” and “Unneaw”. As for the issue of the ethnic identity of the Tai Loei people, the history of the city is found in relation to the Tai Loei ethnic language, traditions, and cultures, which contain myths, tales, and stories. The ethnic identity of the Tai Loei people was found to be 1) the ethnic group name “Tai Loei,”The name of goods and services with the expression of the ethnic identity of Tai Loei people 3) The naming of the Red Cross Festival and the expression of ethnic identity of Tai Loei people. In terms of communication ethnography in the comedy show in Isan (speak Tai Loei), the communication events of ethnic groups in the social space are observed. The communication content and the sequence of the speech in terms of the presentation of Tai Loei representations in the cultural society from the traditions, language, and media interestingly show the dimension of the relationship between language and the establishment of the ethnic identity of Tai Loei people in the Thailand area.

K’abeena phonology

The article provides descriptive analysis of the phonology of K'abeena, a language belonging to the Afro-Asian phylum, spoken in central Ethiopia. In this article, I identify 25 consonant phonemes and 3 loan phonemes. The loan phonemes are included as they are used in the current language's orthography. The language has five vowels. Vowel length and Gemination of consonants are phonemic in the language. With the exception of /h/ and /f/, which never geminate in the language, the rest of the consonant phonemes appear together to geminate. This only happens in the medial position of the words. Consonant clusters are allowed in word medial position with a maximum of two consonants. The phonological process identified in this article involves processes like assimilation, palatalization and deletion. Kabeena does not appear to be a pitch-accent language, but further research is needed to establish confirmed statements.

Indonesian Sound Errors in Television Advertisements

Language sound errors at the phonological level. Phonemes or language sounds in Indonesian consist of vowels, consonants, diphthongs 'double vowels', and clusters 'consonant groups'. Differences in phonemes will change standard language varieties into non-standard ones. Phonological problems occur because vowel, consonant or diphthong phonemes change into other phonemes, thereby changing standard language into non-standard ones. This research aims to analyze language sound errors, namely deletions, additions and changes in vowel phonemes, consonant phonemes, combined vowel phonemes and combined consonant phonemes. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data collection technique for this research is by listening and using the language watched in Indonesian television advertisements. This data analysis technique consists of (1) data collection (2) data reduction, (3) data presentation (4) interesting conclusions. The results of data analysis of Indonesian language sound errors in Television Advertisements are language sound errors in Indonesian consisting of vowels, consonants, diphthongs 'double vowels', and 'consonant clusters' clusters due to errors in language use that do not match Indonesian Spelling (EBI) . Errors in Indonesian sounds or pronunciation that occur in television advertisements like this occur due to ignorance or on purpose so that the advertisement displayed will attract the attention of consumers or people who see, watch and listen to it.

Inheritance of Consonant Phonemes from PAN to Mandailing Language

This study aims to examine the inheritance of consonant phonemes from Proto-Austronesian (PAN) to Mandailing Language (BM), as part of the Austronesian language family. The method used is the comparative historical method with a focus on analyzing basic Swadesh vocabulary collected from native speakers in Panyabungan, Mandailing Natal. The diachronic analysis shows that BM preserved some phonemes from PAN while undergoing significant changes in some consonants. The results show patterns of phonetic changes of PAN to BM consonants, including changes of /b/ to /b/ or /m/, /k/ to /h/ in the penultima position, /z/ to /j/ in the ultima position, /l/ to /n/ in the ultima position, and changes of /h/ to missing in the ultima position. These changes provide deep insights into phonological evolution in BM, indicating a PAN linguistic heritage with innovative variations in word phonology and morphology. The findings support the theory of language evolution and make an important contribution to the understanding of Austronesian historical linguistics.

Iraqi Students' English Consonant Pronunciation Mistakes: An Analytical Study

In order to determine what kind of training is required for second language (L2) learners, it is helpful to diagnose the challenges they have with pronunciation. This study aimed to fill a gap in our understanding of Arab students' English pronunciation challenges by determining which English consonant phonemes and clusters Iraqi EFL students struggle with, and by exploring the ways in which the students' degrees of language proficiency impact their performance on these tests. The research included forty Iraqi female college students, twenty from each of two groups with varying degrees of English ability (20 from lower-intermediate to intermediate). A four-part productive pronunciation exam helped them see where they were going wrong while pronouncing certain clusters of consonants in different word positions. The participants' largest proportion of mistakes while pronouncing the following sounds were found in the data analysis: /ŋ/, /ʒ/, /p/, /ɹ/ and/ʧ/; /t/ and /d/ of the regular past tense morpheme -ed; and the three and four consonant clusters. In addition, students at the lower-intermediate level were more likely to make a mistake when pronouncing clusters and consonant sounds than those at the intermediate level. What's more, mistakes made by learners were more likely to vary in initial positions than in medial or final ones in words. According to the research, consonants which are located at the beginning or end of words are more likely to be problematic for pronunciation than those that are located in the middle of words.

Language Competence in The Digital Disruption Era: A Psycholinguistic Case Study of 2-Year-Old

Abstract: The research aims to identify and describe competencies related to language acquisition of 2-year-old children in the digital disruption era. This research is based on the phenomenon of the times that triggered the digital disruption era to affect children's language acquisition. This research focused on a case study of a 2-year-old child's language acquisition at the phonological and morphosyntactic levels. This research design is descriptive qualitative with a theoretical approach, psycholinguistics. The subject and data source was a 2-year-old boy with the initials DBS. The data collection technique was conducted using participant and non-participant observation techniques, while the data analysis technique included condensation, display, and conclusion/verification. The research results showed: (1) DBS phonology acquisition competence consists of 9 vowel phonemes with minimal vocalic system dominance, 18 consonant phonemes including trill sounds with minimal consonantal system dominance, two diphthongs from national and foreign languages phoneme, one foreign language cluster phoneme which is replacing with the closest mother tongue phoneme; (2) DBS morphosyntactic acquisition competence is dominated by word function in the form of subject, word role in the form of actor, and word category in the form of the noun. In conclusion, the language acquisition competence of two-year-old children in the digital disruption era is quite varied from the previous era, in line with the acquisition of Javanese, Indonesian, English, and Malay lexicons.Keywords: Digital Disruption, Language Competence, Psycholinguistic, Two-Year-Old Child

Comparative study of event-related potential responses within syllables of intra and inter phoneme classes

The present study was carried out to assess the signature neural dynamics as evinced through event-related potential (ERP) responses of the P300 waveform across different inter and intra phoneme consonant classes and to quantify the differential neural dynamical response in real-time. The ERP responses to non-sense three-syllable consonantvowel transitions CVCVCV non-words were recorded on 26 healthy individuals of either sex with an age group of 18–25 years. The first syllable of the non-sense word was always fixed, and the ERP responses of the middle syllable were recorded at the phoneme level, and the ERP responses elicited by the middle syllable were evaluated. The results of the present study documented that different consonant phoneme classes (plosives, fricatives, affricatives, liquids, and nasals) elicited differential neural dynamical responses as observed through the P300 waveform response, exhibiting a significant difference in P300 waveform amplitude across the fricatives vs. nasals experimental design.

Ancient Typical and Modern Character of Some Consonant Phonemes in “Diwani Hikmet”

The article discusses some consonants within lexical and morphological units used in the Kokshetau version of “Divani Hikmet”, written in the Arabic-Persian alphabet around the end of the 17th century. It starts with writing models and characteristics in different positions, their archetypes in ancient texts, and also addresses phonetic phenomena such as voicing assimilation, devoicing assimilation, assibilation, apocope, haplology, gemination, syncope, etc., depending on the anlaut, inlaut, and auslaut positions of the consonants under study, as well as the reasons for these phonetic phenomena. Accordingly, the article uses confrontational (descriptive), synchronic (comparative), diachronic (historical), and contrastive (comparative) methods, in the process of conducting a scientific analysis of consonants in texts from Orkhon-Enisei (7th-8th centuries), Karakhan (10th-12th centuries), Khorezm (11th-13th centuries), ancient Anatolia (13th-15th centuries), ancient Kipchak (13th-16th centuries), in Turkic texts written during the Chagatai era (13th-19th centuries), and in modern Turkic languages. To achieve the set goal, it is necessary to comprehensively study the works of foreign and domestic scientists.

Speech Audiometry: The Development of Lithuanian Bisyllabic Phonemically Balanced Word Lists for Evaluation of Speech Recognition

Background and Objectives: Speech audiometry employs standardized materials, typically in the language spoken by the target population. Language-specific nuances, including phonological features, influence speech perception and recognition. The material of speech audiometry tests for the assessment of word recognition comprises lists of words that are phonemically or phonetically balanced. As auditory perception is influenced by a variety of linguistic features, it is necessary to develop test materials for the listener’s mother tongue. The objective of our study was to compose and evaluate new lists of Lithuanian words to assess speech recognition abilities. Materials and Methods: The main criteria for composing new lists of Lithuanian words included the syllable structure and frequency, the correlation between consonant and vowel phonemes, the frequency of specific vowel and consonant phonemes, word familiarity and rate. The words for the new lists were chosen from the Frequency Dictionary of Written Lithuanian according to the above criteria. Word recognition was assessed at different levels of presentations. The word list data were analyzed using a linear mixed-effect model for repeated measures. Results: Two hundred bisyllabic words were selected and organized into four lists. The results showed no statistically significant difference between the four sets of words. The interaction of the word list and presentation level was not statistically significant. Conclusions: Monaural performance functions indicated good inter-list reliability with no significant differences between the word recognition scores on the different bisyllabic word lists at each of the tested intensities. The word lists developed are equivalent, reliable and can be valuable for assessing speech recognition in a variety of conditions, including diagnosis, hearing rehabilitation and research.

Procedes D’adaptation Phonetique De L’emprunt : La Dynamique De Systeme Phonologique De L’arabe Jordanien En Contact Avec L’anglais Et Le Français

Objectives: This study aimed at analyzing a number of Jordanian Arabic lexical units borrowed from French and English Particularly, we attempt to answer the following questions: What are the mechanisms adopted by the target language in the process of integrating the phonic forms of borrowed units? What is the impact of these adaptation mechanisms on the dynamics of the phonological system of the target language? Methods: This study adopted the methodology of functional phonology to analyze an oral corpus made up of approximately 300 units. Results: The findings of the analysis show that language contact offers explanations for the observed phonetic variations. In essence, the consonant system of Jordanian Arabic is characterized by a rather weak correlation of voiced and voiceless consonants insofar as certain voiceless consonant phonemes do not have corresponding voiced counterparts, e.g., /k/ and /f/, which favored the integration of corresponding voiced phonemes like /g/ and /v/. The results of the study also show the emergence of new vowel sounds. Conclusions: This study found effects of phonetic adaptation strategies and their contribution to the evolution of the phonological system in the target language, revealing that borrowing in such manner introduces new phonetic variations which gradually get integrated within the system of the language in ways that would fit its phonetic rules.

INVENTARISASI FONEM BAHASA SERAM TIMUR DI MANOKWARI, PAPUA BARAT

This research aims to describe the inventory and distribution of phonemes in the East Seram language in Manokwari, West Papua. The data consists of 850 Swadesh core vocabularies obtained in the East Seram language from people from Seram Island who now live in Manokwari. Data sources were obtained from informants' responses or answers to questions asked by researchers both orally and in writing and summarized in a Swadesh list. The method used is descriptive qualitative. Data was collected in depth through direct interaction with informant subjects through observation, interviews, and audio recordings. The process of analyzing the data encompasses transcribing the data, creating a phoneme inventory, and categorizing sounds according to different features, such as articulation and distribution, to recognize vowel and consonant phonemes in the language of East Seram in Manokwari, West Papua. This process includes analyzing phoneme usage patterns in words in initial, middle, and final positions. The results of the data analysis concluded that the East Seram language in Manokwari, West Papua, has 23 segmental phonemes consisting of 18 consonants and five vowels (monophthongs). These phonemes are: p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /c/, /j/, /k/, /g/, /f/, /s/, /h/, /m/, /n/, /ŋ/, /r/, /l/, /w/, /y/, a/, /i/, /u/, /e/ and /o/.

Perbedaan Fonologi Bahasa Indonesia Dan Bahasa Jerman

This study aims to find out the differences contained in. German phonological system, Indonesian phonological system. This place of research is not tied to one place because the objects studied are in the form of text, namely Indonesian journals and German. This form of research is qualitative descriptive with content analysis method. The results of this study that Indonesian and German phonological differences are seen in the number of vowel and consonant phonemes. The Indonesian vocal system has five vowel phonemes. German has a relatively more diverse vowel variant than other languages, there are 15 vowels in total. The difference between Indonesian and German consonant phonemes lies in the phonemes /ɔ/ʊ/, /ɛ:/ and /ɛ/, /ø:/and also /œ/ which are not present in Indonesian. Differences in Indonesian and German phonology can make it difficult for Indonesian speakers to understand German, and vice versa.

Through this research, it is hoped that it can be useful for the Indonesian speakers, especially educators and students.
